The grind of continuous touring wears on them all, but especially Keith and Donna Godchaux. In February, the band meets and all agree that it's time to part. Garcia's heard Bob Weir's solo band keyboard player, Brent Mydland, and suggests he audition; his first show is on April 22. Mickey Hart has gotten involved with recording a percussion soundtrack for the cinematic masterpiece Apocalypse Now. In so doing, he and his associates, including chief cohort Bill Kreutzmann, invent various new percussive instruments, and the 'Rhythm Devils' drum duet becomes a regular part of the Dead's shows in the spring tour. Along with the usual journeys, the band adopts Oakland Auditorium as its new home, with two shows in August and then a five-show run that ends the year, finishing with New Year's Eve. The shows permit camping in the park in front of the hall, jump-starting a new tradition.
