Ever find yourself in that conversation? Since both those statements are nonsense, we move on to other discussion and ultimately other contemporaries. For proof - as if its needed - along comes a show and a set like this!

I remember listening to at least one show during a seven weeks stay in the Bay Area some 21+ years ago. The one I remember had Phil Lesh as a guest, talking about his interest in Thelonious Monk.

I also have an old tape with another show from about the same time. Among the songs played are one called "Marsmellow Road" by Mickey Hart och Barry Melton.

My main question is why those older radio shows are not included in the counting, i.e. why is a september 1988 show number 1??

This "500th" show is actually somewhere closer to the 600th hour of GD-related radio programming I had produced. As I noted in the hoopla surrounding GD Hour #1000, my first broadcast was on February 18th, 1985 on the KFOG Deadhead Hour in San Francisco. I was one of several area Deadheads assisting original host M. Dung with the show at that time (the others were Paul Grushkin, author of The Official Book of the Dead Heads, and Dr Richard Raffel); later that year I was asked to take responsibility for the show, and then other radio stations started asking if they could carry it, too. The band gave their blessing, and that's how I inadvertently became the producer and host of a nationally syndicated radio show. I started numbering them in 1987 and got up to #55 before a commercial syndicator got involved in September 1988 and started the numbers over again from 1.

So there are unnumbered shows, produced by myself and others, going back to November 1984. The "national Deadhead Hour" shows, numbered 1 through 55, ran from the summer of '87 to the summer of '88.

I have a couple of my early KFOG Deadhead Hour programs in the queue for this site.
