In 1976 my brother rented a store front from John Scher next to the Capitol Theater in Passaic, N. J. The store was a head shop named The Golden Unicorn. When the Dead came to town in June 1976 I could hear the music through the wall. I saw every Capitol Theater show after that. One night I sat next to John Belushi. That was ironic because he had called the cops on me in New York City when I worked across the street from his townhouse on Morton Street. I woke him up with my garbage truck. "my bad" It was 5:00 am.
Having an inside connection at Ticketron and Monarch Entertainment i was lucky. I could get tickets that were pretty good days before they went on sale. In New York the Dead were selling out in hours.
I have been very fortunate to have attended some of the most coveted venues like Radio City Music Hall, The Greek Theater in Berkeley, Town Park in Telluride. Bill Grahm gave me tickets for Telluride. and Red Rocks Amphitheater. I have been to some of the most memorable events like New Years Eve, Chinese New Years, Marti Gras, Halloween and the Aprils fools day instrument switch in the dark and many more. There was always something about Red Rocks ( the finest venue on Earth) that reached a pinnacle. Chief Hosa maybe.
I opened a head shop named Color The World, in Boulder Colorado in 1992 It is still open today and sells the finest glass in Colorado. It's a great store, stop by sometime, it is on the hill.
I lot vended for years on tour and GDP finally served me with a cease and desist order at the Delta Center and then in Vegas.They got to know me and had an issue with my Jerry Batiks.They took a few hundred of them. They really liked my work but the suits were ruling by then and anything that looked like Jerry was off limits.Then BGP called me out of the blue and asked if i wanted to sell my Batiks on tour, my bootlegging days were over. I was already selling at The Telluride Bluegrass Festival and other festivals for years and then I was doing shows every weekend.After the Woodstock 1999 disaster i was toured out as a vendor.That was the worst organized event I had ever seen or worked. Thank god no one got killed there. When they started burning our vans and trucks and cars we bailed out of the back gate as the fires lite the night and smoke filled the air. I saw that coming and packed early.
Now I only go for fun. I still catch as many Phil shows as I can.(Phil is the nicest guy you could ever meet). I admit that I still go to Bobby gigs but i don't travel too far for them. Counting all the shows I have attended is near to impossible. It is safe to say 300 plus. That includes PNF, JGB. Hunter, Keith and Billy, The Other Ones, The Dead, Ratdog, Weir Wasserman and Furthur festivals.- Looking for
