This was my very first dead show. I remember Loggins and Messina were playing that very same night in Mpls., and it was really a hard choice. I made the right decision, although I was almost involved in a major car accident on the way home. Bird Song kept playing in my head as I lay in bed after.
nosebleed seats for my 3rd show
A pretty good show, I guess, although we were wayyy up in the last rows, and the show was cut short to my recollections. Wasn't this the one with some guy jumping onstage and tearing at Garcia's guitar plugin...then someone (Kreutzman? Parish?) having to kick the guy in the face to get him off the stage...? Then the band getting pissed and saying "We don't have to put up with this shit!" and walking off stage.... Then a lackluster 1 More Saturday Nite encore, even though twas a Tuesday or so. On a more + note: In high school in SD at the time, had advance tickets (rare for me in those days) and was able to skip my mass communications class (with blessings from the teacher) after I showed him the tickets... teacher glowing and saying ("Go! Get outta here! You'll learn more about mass communications from this mass media event than you would from a year of me talking about it! Those guys are great! Wish I could go! Have fun!") Then a long trip in my buddies mom's '68 Pontiac land shark across midwestern winter roads....Derek & the Dominoes Live on the 8-track...4 g. of hash chunk in the brass pipe at the show...aahh, fond fuzzies...
The fight
I need to find my ticket(still have it somewhere) to see if this show or the later spring show was my first. But I was there during which ever show had the trouble. As I recall it, in the middle of Casey Jones, a fan went over the security barricade in front of the stage. The security guards started tearing into him. Bobby took his mic stand and swung at the security guys. He said something to the effect of " Stop punching our F***ing audience". He then refused to start the music until the security guys left the front of the stage. They left, the song continued. I've always wanted to hear a tape of this show, and this portion, but have never found it...
I did think it was a couple of years after this time however...but the date was never as important as the music/event in my mind!!
Great show just check out
