Recommendations: Other Bands, Local and Otherwise

A lot of the better-known other bands have topics of their own. If you don't see your particular favorite with its own topic, feel free to talk about it here. And hey, if it takes on a life of its own we'll give it a topic!

Jackie Greene

Well, what with his great work with Phil and then the Dead Heads for Obama show, young Jackie is pretty much a household word in these parts and probably ought to have his own topic. So here it is!

Weather Report- the Band

Over in the Weather Report topic that's actually about the weather, Frankly posted this and then realized it wasn't about the band. However, this provides a golden opportunity to launch a topic about this great band, so it's all good!

Frankly said:

they were the first band i saw live.jaco was still alive and playing like a wiz.that was 1976 when black market came out.the venue was stuttgart, west germany.heavily improvised music but as jerry once said, everybody seemed to be playing to himself.only once in a while there were short moments of "playing in the band!but that were only moments.....nothing like the euphoria in a dead concert when you would suddenly see the universe open up on you.hmm, these guy were perfect in their way for sure....but was it fun for the listeners?yes, the weather..i am in the czech republic an it is very icy....

Les Claypool anyone?

Okay, ol' Les opened for Phil one time and has become something of a staple on the jamfest circuit, so I think it's fair to have a topic for him...

Workingman's Ed

boputnam suggested this topic, and I'm sure he'll be along soon to say more!

Here's the basic scoop:

Workingman's Ed Bay Area, authentic, rehearsed and honest. Truly great musicians.

Stu Allen - lead guitar, from JGB Band Pat Nevins - rhythm guitar, from Grapefruit Ed (predecessor and symbiotic with WE) Jeff Faust - bass James Miller - keys Paul Scannell -drums

Anyone seeking a Grateful Dead "fix" will be really glad they found these guys.
