It All Rolls Into One........

And nothing comes for free
There's nothing you can hold
for very long
And when you hear that song
come crying like the wind
it seems like all this life
was just a dream

Stella Blue.....................Stella Blue....................

(well, that's what i got out of this as it progressed ; )

On Planet Bearapin...

The only large land masses are the continents of Bear (in view) and on the other side, the continent of Terrapin. One moon revolves this planet, always facing Terrapin. This earth-like planet has many guarantees, and a few of them are:

The water tastes like wine.
Everything promised is delivered to you.
The climate suits your clothes.
You'll get a new start, live the life you should.
Inspiration will move you brightly.
You won't be treated "this old way."
You'll be thinking about more and more instead of less and less.
Bertha won't come around anymore.

That is a sampling, but best of all, there's this Station,...and, you have the blessings of the Lady with a Fan. ; )

Let's go! ; )

p.s. - lots of room on this sphere for sailing, and no time at all to hate.

A dozen of my live GD tape cover designs.

I have hundreds of live GD tapes, and of those, three quarters of them I made into personal artistic creations. I used mainly colored pencil & ink, but also incorporated other mediums when I could. Some were quickies, some longies. ; ) I decided to make a montage of some of them to share on this site as I think that it's a worthy contribution. I know I wasn't alone in creating my own tape covers. That's one thing that was/is a traditional part of being a deadhead.

Most of the designs have special meaning. From the Stealie with my gone but not forgotten dog Dupree, to my daughters first show (which coincidentally was 8/19/89..my first was 8/19/80) to the palm tree and beach inside a heart. We (my ex wife and I) went to Jamaica for our honeymoon in 85. The morning we left we flew straight to Baltimore, hopped in the car and drove to Merriweather 20 minutes away for the 6/30/85 show. Waking up in Jamaica in the morning and seeing the Dead in the evening was certainly an experience.

-TM

Artist: My son Andrew; his present for my 50th Birthday!

What a fine son I have. He surprised me with this digital graphic HE created for my 50th birthday today (6/25). Yes, I'm now officially half a freekin' century old.
Anyway, I was floored at how cool it is, and I told him I was absolutely posting it on here. He's a talented 17 year old.

And to one of my favorite Beatles tunes to boot. They say "like father like son," but I'm thinking maybe I have something to learn from him.

That's probably the case....Love my boy (and my girl too!) ; )

They Love Each Other

This couple they got married so well they did agree.

I hand drew this from an actual skull (worked in a medical museum once upon a time) utilizing pointillism with pen and ink, and melded the GD name into the bones. Took a snapshot and emailed it to myself. Copied and flipped the image in Illustrator so I had a "couple," added the roses and the text and........

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce Mr. & Mrs. Bones.....

And indeed they do Love Each Other. ; )

And that's a special thing.

In Kesey I Trust

For me it was a no-brainer to create a work of art in honor of Ken Kesey for this site. His influence and importance in Grateful Dead culture and lifestyle is paramount. From the Bus to the Pranksters to the Dark Star rap at the Halloween show in 91, and soooo much more. Kesey was a major player. And his novels? Only Prankster Number 1 could conjure up the intensity and depth of his writings.

Being lucky enough to have attended Dead shows and other events where he was a participant, and having his aura rub off on me in its own way, this piece of art pretty much just steered itself. ; ) If Zane Kesey (Ken's son) restores the original Bus one day, I'd give my middle finger to have one square foot to paint my masterpiece.

Thanks Ken, coming from another Oregonian. If I drove a semi-truck for a living and spent my days & nights Truckin' up and down the interstates, I'd drive a Kenworth.

Thank you.

Embroidered Skull and Roses

I embroidered this in 1972 when I was 15 and a major Deadhead touring the east coast..I recently put it on another jacket so i can proudly wear it as the original jacket wore out but the embroidery stayed in tact pretty well! Alton Kelley was a huge inspiration to me as an artist..I loved to copy his artwork and also his fabulous lettering..Carla

If the Thunder Don't get ya

Then by god, you know the Lightning will....Actually, it did. Oh well, it's not really a "self portrait" but it kind of is. So call it what you will, for me it was an experiment. They kind of all are. I am always curious as to what I can conjure up next, and wanted to create a new avatar, started fooling with it, and kaboom, it's another piece of art. The avatar is a little different.

I tell ya, If I was a musician I'd be putting out 3 albums a year. Next year I'll probably keel over from all the hours I'm logging in at the computer. But hey, If I post it, I'm satisfied with it. If you're satisfied, cool. If you're not. Oh well..Maybe next time.

It's all in the eyes (art 101 - self portrait)

An artists rite of passage is the proverbial self-portrait, and the last one I did was a long time ago in college. Self portraits are not just a face, but a reflection of one's inner-self and all the intricacies that go with; be they the warm reds and golds of energy and confidence, or the blues & greys of those sad, rough and tumble days we all have.

Colors and shadows and lines and textures are all part of our makeup, and as we age we change physically and mentally. We remember, we forget, life is a test, you know the drill. There is very little about the human makeup that doesn't change.

Except for our eyes. From day one until the day we die, that is a constant.

For me another constant that will never change is the love I have for the music of the GD, and it's reflected right where it belongs, in my eyes.

Those would be the Eyes of the World. You've got them too. ; )

Homeward bound post moe.down

When the band moe. plays their summer festival "moe.down," little do they know that the aliens from the planet moe. always show up. Switch on the invisibility shield, set the controls on hover, beam down, freak with the tribe, and when all is said and done, it's back to the good ship for the journey home.

And Bill and Ted thought they were alone! Ha!

Heck, an alien once told me the GD have 3 planets. Go figure. ; )

moe. (mean stooge...cool band)

Moe. is a great band who I've been listening to a lot here of late (thanks for the CD's Stu!). For some reason their name makes me think of the meanest of the 3 Stooges, but I know better.: )
Found an old "Dupree's" that interviewed them after the 97 furthur tour. Between the interview and all the listening of their music, a little voice in my head told me it was time to create something in their honor. With me one usually leads to two. So there are two new creations in honor of those fine musicans who call themselves moe.

moe. has adjusted my ears beautifully. Larry & Curly also had ear adjustments of the Moe variety, too bad theirs weren't by the band.

Remember Highlights magazine at the Dentist office, with "Hidden Pictures?" Well, This puppy is ripe with them. And just about all of them just occur naturally after a Photoshop bath. Open it big on my link, and have a good time. I certainly enjoyed making it with you in mind.

Unbroken Chain...

From a pencil drawing I did of a girl at Cal Expo in May of 91, and damn if I haven't been up all night working on this. Like a good jam, the art creates itself. No thought out plan, pure improvisation. No B.S..It's amazing and natural how music and visual art share so much element-wise. Which will be my thesis when I start my Masters of Fine Arts program this summer. I love to take GD song lyrics and create my own visual interpretations. Sometimes I start a drawing with no lyrical content in mind at all, and realize during the process that "hey, this lyric would work here." That's the coolest thing when that happens.

And purely coincidental in a Dead sort of way, rainbow girls pants has a freekin' skull! ; )

I always encourage those who want to have a better look at my art to click the link on my profile, and have a look at the work the way it should be looked at, large. ; ) Thanks for taking a look regardless. peace.

Adios, El Paso! (pencil rendering)

Way back before my hand ever touched a mouse and looked at a monitor, I had my hand on pencils, pens, real airbrushes, paint brushes, and so on.

My friend Bob took this picture of our friend Jose as we left El Paso in 1981. I was driving Jose's jeep, as his condition was, uh, well, not conducive to pilot duties. We were headed north on our way back to Las Cruces, New Mexico (where we all attended New Mexico State University). El Paso is about 40 miles south of Las Cruces. One commonality that was glue to our friendships, we all dug the Dead. Jose was a big Pigpen fan, really into the Blues, was very charismatic, and strangely enough had a bit of that Pig look, the Hispanic version. ; )

I drew this pic from Bob's photo in 1983. For this site I took a pic of this drawing with my cell phone camera, emailed it to myself, and this is what you get, a watered down version of the crisp original (no fine lines in his flannel shirt can be seen, as well as other details; and it's cropped so no mountains in the background either). I consider pencil renderings as acoustic art. No plug in necessary. Thanks for taking a look.

You Know He Would.....

I was listening to Jerry tonight, and decided to put together a mix of some of my already-done artwork PLUS a photo I took of Jerry onstage at Cal Expo in June of 1991. Drew around Jerry's photo, flipped him around so he's facing out, and did a little clipping mask work to silhouette him, and dropped in my "5 Bolt Design" right on top of that lucky old sun. Dropped in some lyrics from Standing on the Moon, and was real happy with the result.

It doesn't have to be our moon, for me it's about the feeling of isolation in the song. That's all I wanted to try to capture. I miss the guy. Love ya Jerry. This one is for YOU.

KASA: Mission Dark Star A "Success"

-TERRAPIN TODAY-
KASA Space Probes return from 8 year mission to the "Dark Star"

Story and artwork by Thomas Mittemeyer

Siding, Attah. April 25, ATFS (another times forgotten space). KASA is pleased that space probes Stella and Bertha have returned safely from their 8 year mission to the "Dark Star" in the Althea constellation. Being the first mission to approach the star (the only known one of its kind in the universe), and after a 3 year journey to the stellar giant, the probes spent the better part of two years gathering data which KASA (Kesey's Alright Space Adventures) scientists anticipated would reveal information that cant be gathered from our home base here on Terrapin.

One of the most interesting facts in all the stored data from both probes was that indeed, as hypothesized but not known unitl now, is that the Dark Star does pour its light into ashes. Oddly enough, the probes came back with frontal engravings that were almost twin-like, yet different, depicting "Smiling Skulls" with the words "Grateful Dead" adorning their centers.

Also of note, the probes showed no sign of age, wear and tear, or dings from space matter. KASA expected them to have made the trip home on last legs, and was "shocked" that they arrived home looking, according to KASA spokesperson Frank Tower, "in better shape than when we launched them eight years ago."

Tower reported that the probes had a glow about them that will be further investigated as they are rolled away to the Dew of Morning Test Facility for dismantling and analysis. "As crazy as a rooster crowing at midnight" was heard amongst the team of scientists involved in the project. More information will be reported when available. All in all KASA is calling the mission a huge success.

Tower and all KASA DS mission team members thank the state of Atta, the city of Siding, and the residents of Terrapin, whose tax ducats fueled (no pun intended) the mission. Tower also noted in the press conference that "when you (residents of Terrapin) look out at night at that Dark Star 420 million miles distant, remember that you helped fund our largest to date giant leap for mankind."

The next planned tax-funded project by KASA will be an inner-stellar testing of the "New and improved" MOSES® Quasar Flight Suit. KASA said all efforts will be made to ensure that no repeat of the last testings disaster will happen when accidently, Captain Shrubby VanSquidwalker lost his middle finger at the knuckle because the door was ajar.

Reporting for TERRAPIN TODAY
Steal Your Molecules (T-shirt design)

Ok, I lied. I had to submit more art. Was playing with the "Stealie" I did a few days ago and came up with what turned out to be a pretty cool design. Of course, I'd never make this shirt w/o GD Merchandising permission, because I'm not that kind of rule breaker. But I think this would make a really sweet shirt, or sticker, etc. The beauty of the "Stealie" is that there are so many possibilities.

Anyhow, have a GRATE day peoples. Glad to have a forum to shares my wares. ; )

I'm contemplating putting a trunk and elephant ears on this one, as it already has a "face." Then I could re-name it "Elephish." ; )

Thanks for the look.

Tea Leaf Green (Bay Area Band)

My friend Christopher manages this band, and having but only a couple of their cd's (so far), I decided to take their name and see what I could come up with. Using my safety net (symmetrical) style, it worked (for me) as a cohesive unit. Originally done in Illustrator, I pulled it into photoshop and filtered it to give it a stained glass kind of look.

Hi to the band, and hope they likes! ; )

Sharing an Adobe Illustrator drawing I did of the song Candyman. It has no significance except the pretty lady is a friend and I do love the song. And it is a fun challenge to create art that comes from my favorite band. ; )

Enjoy! ; ).....I love drawing Dead stuff. The Stealie I did years ago (1988) and incorporated it in here for grins......

Where the Dead were the Apples, Frank was the Orange. Both made me feel like there really was something out there musically and universally that couldn't really be explained. I was lucky enough to meet the man in a Holiday Inn in Baltimore before his show when I was 16. I was speechless, he was nice. I miss him too.

Lennon in the Sky with Diamonds

The Beatles were my favorite band when I was a kid. My favorite Beatle was always John Lennon. In my eyes and ears there was always a mystery about him & his songwriting that both frightened me (Strawberry Fields Forever still gives me the shivers) yet at the same time enlightened me. In my almost 50 years of life I've still not come across a musician who could do that to me. I have found a visual artist though who has, that being M.C. Escher.

This is my Adobe Illustrator tribute to the man, the genius, the missed.

And after drums...SPACE.

Having a keen interest in astronomy; the planets, solar system, stars, universe, etc., I ventured into photoshop and just started from scratch, and over several months of edits, additions, subtractions and whatnot I told myself, this is it!

The black moon that gravitates close to the planet is 'Darskylukin' (a play on Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, & Anakin Skywalker). The planet is named 'Handrewna' (named after my kids Hanna & Andrew). The sun that ignites Handrewna is 'Gailian' (named after my kids middle names, Gail & Ian). And finally, that sun Gailian is the beacon of the Dragonfly constellation.

Even when naming the elements, one must always make sure to Phil the Space!

M.C. Phischer (Tribute to band Phish & artist M.C. Escher)

Being one who enjoys not just GD music but lots of other stuff, including other jam bands, Phish rings my bell. And I was very glad when some of the Dead members (namely Phil, but also Bobby) acknowledged them with invites to play together (and vice versa).

I was also very glad when the snippets of "us (phish phans) vs. them (deadheads)" that was generated not by the band but by the "phans" finally went away. Because hey, I'm a "phan" too. They move me as much as the Dead did/do, but in a different way. To me, Phish were the perfect mixture of the GD/Zappa.

And let me tell you people, speaking strictly for me myself and I, that is about as close to musical heaven as it gets. With Phish, I got to have my cake and eat it too. My grin only got bigger. Ok, enough chatter.

I love symmetrical design, and wanted to do something with the Phish name, seeing it lends itself to many possibilities. Also being influenced by the work of artist M.C. Escher, I came up with this one color creation that I'm very proud of and had a good ol' time creating.

It has also leant itself to other cool visuals through the use of Photoshop filters. Thanks for taking a look, and having to read through my jibber-jabber along the way.

Jerry circa 1982

I did this airbrush drawing in April of 1982, and last night (4/13/07) took a picture of it with my cell phone camera. This was my very first complete airbrush drawing I ever did. I was (and am still) very proud of it. It's not taken from anything, just right out of my head.

Of course nowadays I do all the airbrushing in Adobe Illustrator and photoshop. Times have changed. My love for the man never will.

enjoy!

Grateful Dead Tape Cover Tribute (2007) Adobe Illustrator

Around the turn of the millennium i decided to start making my own "digital" tape covers. Up until then I did them by hand using colored pencil, inks, airbrush and other materials.

In 2007 I took two of my digital tape covers and flipped them "foot to foot," threw em' into photoshop, pushed some buttons, squeezed some knobs, and shazam, I had me a Fillmore style looking kind of creation.

The rest is history. Obviously I can't get this to work for tape covers. But if I enlarged it, it's kind of got that old time 60's Kelly/Mouse/Moscoso/Griffin/Wilson poster art kind of feel. That alone made me happy. ; )

And the end result is my tribute to the GD phenomenon of live tapes/trading, etc. Wave that Flag! ; )

I drove to A place in Point Pleasant NJ called "The Green Planet Coffee Co." I get out of my car and there's a shop called "Sunshine Daydream" AND I had my camera with me, so I had to snap a picture. I put it under fan art because I didn't know where else to put it.

Grateful Dead-Beduin wedding in the desert

2 days ago,2 of my best friends got married in the desert in south Israel.I have the honor to produce it.The brum-Benny,use to be in a lot of concerts of the dead during the 70's-80's.Their ceremony of love was in the middle of the desert,so i ask from another good friend with giant heart and great hands-and not familiar with the deads to preapar a car that will take them to the mountain.I show him pictures of difrent things related with the dead, and the result was amazing !!! it was a surprise for the wedding, the couple thought they will walk to the mountain, and then we came to pic them with the car.All the people in the way to mountain that saw the car passing aplause and couldn't belive what they are looking at.it was so beatiful,so artistic made with so much love.
Now.after the wedding,we put the car in the middle of the kibuts(our community)-so we wont forget it...you are invited to come and see it for yourself...
ah,of course that there was a lot of dead songs during the weekend...
Sorry if i wrote with some spelling mistakes...my lenguage is Hebrew...
Shalom ,Natalia

Dark Star quilt

This is "Dark Star: Transitive Nightfall of Diamonds." I used a traditional star pattern but played with the placement of the stars so that they are unevenly spaced, with some stars only partly showing on the edges to suggest an infinite night sky. The fabric is cosmic-themed and I placed the values so that dark stars were on a medium background (more or less) with the lightest fabric as the "diamonds" falling diagonally across the quilt. I was really thrilled when this quilt won 3rd place Viewer's Choice at our local guild museum show a few years ago.

Alaska Shows Hotel Room Run

Newfound friend on our way to being thrown out of our motel room right before the Alaska shows. For reasons unknown the management objected to 30 of us sharing one room. We then tried to convince them that we wanted one room to store backpacks only, but they were unconvinced. At some point it seemed like an EXCELLENT idea to paint the TV day-glo (with paint that washes off easily with water! We may be nuts, but we're not mean!)

St. Stephen

St. Stephen quilt, mainly hand-pieced and hand-appliqued, with a bone rose in Stephen's hands, wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to Hell where there are embroidered skeletons, Calliope woman (muse of poetry) reading a book called "Curious Sense," high green chilly winds, shafts of lavender, ivy, manzanita, William Tell and speeding arrow. I took the image of Stephen from a reliquary of the first St. Stephen, who was stoned to death. I had fun with this one!

China Cat Sunflower quilt

This is a quilt I made based on China Cat Sunflower. Details don't show in this picture, but it has lots of cosmic images, cats and sunflowers. Illustrated are "proud walking jingle in the midnight sun," "copper dome bodhi" and "the eagle wing palace of the queen chinee," among others. It is, of course, a crazy quilt! Tons of beads, embroidery and buttons, making it very heavy.

Aoxomoxoa Painting, 41st West, East Campus, MIT, circa 1980

I painted this sometime around 1980 in the Blacklight Lounge of 41st West, East Campus, MIT. http://web.mit.edu/41w/www/

I took this photo on 6/24/83, when I was visiting (I graduated in 1981). The painting was already a bit beat up and painted over by then. The walls of this lounge were repainted nearly every year, and for many years, everything except the Aoxomoxoa was painted over. Then, in 2004, a freshman painter misunderstood the instructions and painted over it. So, it's gone now.

Steal Your Face with concentric Rings, 41st West, MIT, circa 1979

My friend Mike and I (Dean) painted this one night while at MIT, around 1979 or so. This is on 41st West of East Campus, a dorm there. We used lots and lots of tape to get the circles right. This photo was taken on 6/24/83, a few years later. I most recently went back there for a visit in fall of 2004, and this painting was still there!

Map-Quest

I love the Dead. Its pretty much all I listen too. I find their music to be highly intelligent and articultate. It speaks measures about emotion and inspiration, it tickles these notions in the brain and sends shivers down my spine. It moves me to make my work what it is and helps keep my head up when the realities of art rear their ugly heads.

This piece I made for The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and I listened to the Dead the whole way through. It is representative of two bodies of work I do. One that is highly conceptual and the other that is free form and improvised.

I had the great experience of being able to share this piece with Dennis Mcnally and he loved it. He shared some great Jerry stories with me and loved my work. We talked long about transistions, repitition and nature.

For more of my work check out my website DaveEppley.com

I will be in a show at The Tang Museum this Fall and a NYC exhibition.

Be Grateful ALWAYS!
