Lennon in the Sky with Diamonds

The Beatles were my favorite band when I was a kid. My favorite Beatle was always John Lennon. In my eyes and ears there was always a mystery about him & his songwriting that both frightened me (Strawberry Fields Forever still gives me the shivers) yet at the same time enlightened me. In my almost 50 years of life I've still not come across a musician who could do that to me. I have found a visual artist though who has, that being M.C. Escher.

This is my Adobe Illustrator tribute to the man, the genius, the missed.

Grateful Dead Tape Cover Tribute (2007) Adobe Illustrator

Around the turn of the millennium i decided to start making my own "digital" tape covers. Up until then I did them by hand using colored pencil, inks, airbrush and other materials.

In 2007 I took two of my digital tape covers and flipped them "foot to foot," threw em' into photoshop, pushed some buttons, squeezed some knobs, and shazam, I had me a Fillmore style looking kind of creation.

The rest is history. Obviously I can't get this to work for tape covers. But if I enlarged it, it's kind of got that old time 60's Kelly/Mouse/Moscoso/Griffin/Wilson poster art kind of feel. That alone made me happy. ; )

And the end result is my tribute to the GD phenomenon of live tapes/trading, etc. Wave that Flag! ; )

-Tom Mitt

Sierra College Pop Festival May 3-4, 1969

This is a photo of the event poster for the Sierra College Pop Festival, May 3 - 4, 1969 in Rocklin, CA. The Grateful Dead headlined the show on the afternoon of May 3rd. I attended this show and managed to hang on to this poster all these years. The credit for the creator of this poster appears in the lower right corner. All it says is, "poster by FRED". Being a monochrome collage of some basic graphics, lettering and publicity / record album photos of the participating bands, it is far from an artistic masterpiece, however it is a genuine and very rare poster of the event and should be included in the Grateful Dead Archives. Enjoy!

David T
the cutter

P.S. After previewing this post, I see it says, "Posted December 31st, 1969 by cutter". It should say, "Posted July 13th, 2007 by cutter". Your website clock is off slightly...I do like that date however...Happy New Year!
