Here's a link to a site where there are many shows posted for free download. Sound quality is pretty awesome and he adds stuff all the time. His list includes most of the 'Hunter's Trix' series of matrix shows currently making the rounds via bit torrent at etree. It would be a good place to check out if you are starting a collection, or even enhancing one. http://rapid.org/board/showthread.php?t=266944 Cheers... His job is to shed light, not to master...

Hey, all. I don't have tapes to trade... but there is a show I would love to see one more time in this life and it is the 3rd show at Alpine Valley, July, 1989. Best concert I ever saw and my first Dead Show. I have the recording but to actually see it again.... how could I explain? I was 19. I know there is a full vid of this show in existence. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Y ~ C*

Like IRSampson, I also had a couple hundred Maxell and TDK gems in my collection. I went digital a couple years ago and would put any of the digital stuff I have against any of my old tapes quality-wise. There is not one drawback that I can think of, it's just that first step that is the hardest. Storage is a GREAT benefit. 1 hard drive can store an entire collection, while you can rotate stuff on your iPod. Luckily, there are folks on these boards and others who are happy to guide you through the process. The vines here helped point me in the right direction. I finally completed my leap into the digital age by dragging my cassette collection to the Chicago stop on the band's '09 Spring Tour and just handed them out. I've recently been posting shows here that I have uploaded to Rapidshare. These are clean downloads, free to those who wish them. Just copy the link to your browser, and your in business. I'm also willing to share my list with anyone who's looking - just PM me.

a word of encouragement in transitioning from your tapes...
I too am one of the Old School heads who was reluctant to move into the digital realm. And I'm a techie! What forced the issue was that I also found fewer people interested in trading tapes. So I did the homework and got advice from others and haven't look back since. I still have about 200 of the 850 or so tapes I had, giving the others away to those in need. But you don't need to convert what you have. Most of it is available out there and will sound better. The easiest way to download is using a torrent app like UTorrent or others, where you add a download by clicking on the torrent link. The bt.etree.org site has tons of great quality shows and enough seeds to allow for reasonably fast downloads. Get the free application "Traders Little Helper", which will easily convert the various compressed file formats (shn, flac, etc.) to WAV (where you can burn to CD if your burner software can't decode the compressed formats), or there are plenty of others that will get you to MP3Pro or similar formats suitable for your iPod. The archive.org site primarily offers audience recordings available for download, but you can also stream the soundboard stuff and capture it with an audio program like CoolEdit Pro, etc. The learning curve isn't bad and once you do, you'll discover the bliss you found when first collecting those crispy XLII-S copies. And nearly everything can be done for free, except maybe the cost of the CD's - which are a hell of a lot cheaper than tapes :) I know have replaced most of all my favorite shows and have added tons more. My 80 GB iPod is stuffed with a couple hundred shows as well. Technology is our friend, just as it was the band's! Enjoy your eargasms!!

I am almost POSITIVE the Dead played a second encore after Casey Jones on 10/28/77. It was my first Casey, AMAZING, and I recall the Dead left the stage, the roadies started breaking it down, but the fans were going wild! We would not leave. The Dead finally came back out and played another. That is how I remember it to this day. But I can't find any evidence to back it up, as all tapes/recordings from that show say Casey was only encore. Anyone share my memory??? Was it a dream, or another show, or ??? Anyone with a tape to back me up?Thanks.

I heard this show the othere day on XM and Archive only has an audience of it....The show was one of the last recorded on reel to reel, as this practic ended in 1981 in favor of cassette masters....my question is does anyone have a low gen SDBD of this show I could burn? It is such a crisp sounding show, but (no offense to any tapers) the Aud tapes don't do it justice in my humble opinion. thanks! My email is afidelman@gmail.com

I'm glad the subject of tapes came up because I, like everyone else here, has tapes sitting around that are gathering a lot of dust.I saw a tape converter recently and was wondering if anyone had experimented with these. It plugs into your computer and converts the audio to mp3 files. I'm not sure how it would work with Dead shows though as I'm sure the converter would have difficulty picking out tracks with either an audience bootleg or songs running into each other. Anyone have experience with these?? Here's a link if you are interested: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/7a8d/ To reiterate, I have never tried this device nor am I promoting it in any way. Just wondering.

... to give away my cassette tapes. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of hours of GD and all kinds of other music as well. Just don't have the room anymore - the collection takes up 4 shelves in our daughter's already cluttered playroom.I made this offer on another forum last year and a few people took me up on it: send me a return envelope with postage, and I'll send as many tapes as I can fit into it. Usually, I can send 8 tapes for the price of a priority mail stamp, but if I send without cases, I can fit even more. I'd love to give the tapes to those who might enjoy them and free up some space here at home. I still listen to a ton of GD, but mostly on the computer these days. I don't even know if anyone wants cassettes anymore (I do know that there are some ways to transfer them to computer files, but I don't have the time). If you're interested, send me a message here or email chipwithrow@yahoo.com. I'll send you a partial list of what I have. "Folk rock for groovin families!" myspace.com/chipwithrow chipwithrow.com

I listed my tapes last night. I was appalled to find about 7 empty tape cases. I need to find some of the tapes, they were some of the best. Years ago, I had my best collection stolen from my car. My wails of gridf brought the neighbors running, they thought I had found my cat dead, seriously. I replaced what I could but.... The thought that the tapes were sold on the street and taped over made me sick. I've looked into transfering from tapes into my PC and then using a free download program to edit. Then I'll burn CDs.Then I can start trading, getting what I want and giving what someone else wants

There seem to be no tapes in circulation from the brief east coast tour of April 19 (Thee Image, Miami) through May 11 (The Dome, Virginia Beach). Does anyone know whether these shows were taped? I would love to believe and hope that something from Thee Image Miami shows might surface (not the later Gulfstream Racetrack show). Portions of the undated 1968 tapes sound very familiar and have some unique features I remember from the Miami show. But if anyone can definitively say that none of the east coast shows were taped then I will stop analyzing the undated 1968 tapes to see if they might fit into the evolutionary progression of spring 68. Has anyone done a study of the undated 68 tapes to estimate where they ought to fit in? There seem to be some uniqueness of tempo, lead guitar jams and percussion that give me hope they could be snatches from around that time. There was also a free concert at Greynolds Park in Miami during their stay in Miami. I have often thought that since the tour was so short and since Miami was the first stop that maybe no one bothered to bring or set up the taping equipment. Any hope, guesses, leads will be greatly appreciated.

...shall we go, you and I while we can... Apparently, as of now, there are no recordings which reflect the dates you specified. That doesn't mean they don't exist, although they may not, in fact have been recorded, or the recordings may be lost, or they may exist in the vault, in which case, until there is transperency there, you'll never know. I'd suggest that you continue to listen to everthing around that time period, especially things that are date/location unspecific to see if you find anything. Provenence was not the top priority then, if you know what I mean. Also, keep an eye on the torrent sites, as little gems like this have a way of popping up frequently ( shows from 10/68 appeared recently).

So with the apperent loss of the ability to download from the tapers section, I offer this. I have downloaded to CD, many of the sections selections, all date sensitive ( tried to keep all the 72's or 74's on a CD) Now I would love to offer these up for trade, but the question is will I be hassled by the powers that be?

Hey Guys, Gals- I wanted to ask anyone out there if I can begin again or to say try and re-establish a connection and collection of Dead shows. Back in 1990, I lost all of my shows (some 400 to 600 cassettes) and that loss was not under my control. I moved from the Midwest to the east coast at that time and have been here ever since. I fell out of the “scene” but kept the spirit and tunes alive, but issues kept me from doing any serious trading. My last show was Soldier Field ’90 and my 1st. was ’76 in Boston. Anyway, I’m looking for the opportunity to acquire shows again and get back into trading although I have nothing that anyone does not already have, i.e., some Dick’s picks, Beyond description, all the Dvd’s and other tidbits etc. I’ve garnered over the years. Obviously I have the internet but where I live in the mountains there is only dial up and this makes it a pain in the ass to do anything without waiting what seems like years for a download etc. I am aware that the digital age is here and shows are available on CDR and many people have transferred their shows to disk, kudos! If there is anyone out there willing to email me a list of shows and let me know what it will take to get some, that would be gratefully appreciated. I can send Cdr’s, postage etc. whatever you need, I’ll do. Email me at notchloft@aol.com Thanking you all in advance, Peace Andy Kohn
