    NEW MOONALICE CD/DVD IS AWESOME
This wonderful studio album [MOONALICE} starts off with "Bleeding Of Love" penned by Ann McNamee with her fine, smooth, soulful voice pleading for relief from false feelings and untrue expressions of love on the run.The powerful pounding heartbeat of James Sanchez'drums, and Jack Casady' powerful bass pulsate throughout this debut masterpiece! Ann'vocals are stunning as well on her other compositions on this album which include "Dance Into The Lightning", "This Changes Everything", and "Listen To Those Eyes". "Bleeding Of Love" flows perfectly into another of Ann' songs "Unspoken Words" sung by Pete Sears of love distroyed by false feelings and words left unsaid, "The heavy weight of unspoken words keeps us apart". A melencoly song by Roger McNamee of one sided love follows that all of our hearts have cried for as not to be true but having to accept as a reality to be haunted by for evermore. And in his head she said, "I'm Glad You Think So". This is one of my favorite songs by Roger. Roger and Ann have been together longer than musical partners in the "Flying Other Brothers" along with pete, Barry, and GE along with others was the tree branch which "MOONALICE" grew from. Roger and Ann are a happily married proud couple who met at a "Jerry Garcia Band" show they were enjoying in the 80'as many of the rest of us have come together at as well. Thank you Jerry!! This bond is strong in their writings together as evidenced in the powerful tune of how quickly situations can change with lives turned upside down in the "Blink Of An Eye". The beautiful guitar and pedal steel guitar melodys flow wonderfully through these stories played by Barry Sless in the style only he can create. "Eileen Aroon" is a classic Irish ballad recorded by the Claney Brothers in 1961 with a newer version being performed during the 1988-89 tours by Bob Dylan' Band with the great guitar player GE Smith who' own arraingment is included here which he sings adding his outstanding classic guitar sound to make it his own. "I Ain't Ever Satisfied" by Steve Earle is also performed here in GE Smith' own unique vocal style and makes this reviewer very satisfied indeed! "Dusty Streets Of Cairo" is GE' original composition on this release and one of it's strongest selections with GE" guitar and Barry' pedal steel dancing beautifully togethor. "Kick It Open" is a rocking infectious tune by keyboardist extrodinare Pete Sears who sings the songs lyrics written by his wife Jeannette who as a team have composed songs in their long history including many of Jefferson Starship’s hits including Stranger, Awakening,Save Your Love, and Winds of Change just to name a few. Pete Sears was also part of the early "Rod Stewart" albums as well as playing with just about every musician and band from the San Francisco Bay Area' musical royality at one time or another over the years. If you love tender, true, genuine, from the heart music then "MOONALICE" is for you! A band of fine musicians and legends in music. Because we all know "It's all about the music"!!!! That's the Moonalice Tribes motto so join the tribe and start being "Satisfied". Moonalice posts it's live shows for free on their websites for us all to enjoy: http://www.moonaliceband.com/music/ http://www.youtube.com/moonalice http://twitter.com/Moonalice So if you like what you hear support the band, buy their album, join the tribe, and come to shows and tell them how awesome they are. Moonalice is: Ann & Roger McNamee (Flying Other Brothers) Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship, Rod Stewart) Barry Sless (Phil Lesh & Friends, David Nelson Band), , and Jim Sanchez (Dr. John, Boz Scaggs) GE Smith (Saturday Night Live, Bob Dylan), Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), Review by Dennis Koessel now aka "Greeney52Moonalice"

So the Dead go west after May 2nd!! Looking for a Dead show the following weekend for only $15 in advance $20 @ the door? KIC Productions presents Melvin Seals & JGB SATURDAY 5-9-09 @ ZPak Live Home of Va Brew Co. We are at the Northern most part of VA 15 min from MD & WV. Come catch JGB yes the real JGB (- Jerry of course). Get more details @ www.myspace.com/zeropak or www.ZEROPAKLIVE.com Melvin is best known for his long friendship and musical partnership with cultural icon and guitarist Jerry Garcia and the smile of his that lights up the room. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become "Jam Band Music". From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up. Melvin and JGB brings an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. With acoustic and electric ingredients and unique combinations of guitar, mandolin, slide and lap steel with savory bass, hearty drums and, of course, a heapin' helpin' of the wizard's magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that keeps audiences dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for several hours. Melvin is pioneering a path deeper into the musical territory he helped to establish.

The DeFelice Brothers, from upstate NY, are an earthy roots rock type band who really capture that upstate vibe: take a listen to "Rockefeller Drug Law Blues." And one that goes a but further afield is O.A.R. I went to a concert a few summers ago, and absolutely enjoyed it. I may have been the oldest guy there, but I could still feel the connection they have with their crowd, and they played some pretty inspired jams.

My 17 year old son got me listening to PGroove about 3 years ago. They are definitely worth checking out. Great scene and great people. They move between laid back jams to a techno sound. They put on a 3 day festival at a friend of mines 250 acre farm in Lafayette GA every Memorial day weekend called Amberland that is amazing. Just them playing 3 to 5 sets a day till the wee hours of the morning.

If David Grisman's Bluegrass Experience rolls through your neck of the woods this summer I HIGHLY recommend checking them out. We spent a lazy summer friday night in Denver last night enjoying them. Not only did we get some extraordinary guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle pickin', we got a nice lesson in the history of bluegrass from the man himself ... to top it off, out of nowhere .. could it be? YES! a bluegrassy Dark Hollow. Man oh man what a night!! The best part is I get to see them again tonight in Boulder. "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. I want a double dose in any case" ... "You got to hear my supplication. Got to hear me now. A little bolt of inspiration"

The first night was better but only because it was in Denver where the crowd was a lot more respectful. The Boulder show was filled with college kids who didn't know how to shut the F up and listen. I mean these guys play acoustic and they aren't even plugged into amps so excessive talking and laughing and partying kind of ruins the show you know? Like David said "Lost today is the art of listening". Great advice. "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. I want a double dose in any case" ... "You got to hear my supplication. Got to hear me now. A little bolt of inspiration"

They're touring together this summer. Saw them Sunday night and both were excellent! Steve has still got it and Carlos, well he's Carlos, enough said! One highlight was when Steve came on stage during Carlos' set and they did Marvin Gaye's "Right On". If they're coming your way I highly recommend them!

My first time on the Board...My wife and I went out for drinks last Friday night at a local bar in Grapevine Texas called Tolberts. Tolberts features local bands on Friday's and Saturday's. On Friday, a Dead tribute band called Forgotten Space played at Tolberts. The band was absolutely great! It was our first time to see this band and we were impressed. The lead guitar player, Kenny Withrow, replicated the Jerry Garcia sound down to the riff and note. Kenny Withrow is one of the founding members of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. All-in-all, the band played the Dead music very well!

I was fortunate enough to see Shadow when he came to Baltimore a while back (sorry it has taken me so long to post this) and I think this guy is on to something really cool. I didn't see him as being a DJ but rather an artist playing the most complicated digital instrument ever conceived. I had a blast and can't wait to see another show and I really wish I had enough stamina to have seen him after that epic Super Jam @ Bonnaroo in '06 (If memory serves). I had to hear about that show for years from my sons while waiting my chance to take in the experience.

Jas Obrecht review First, a quick background check: Barry “The Fish” Melton played lead guitar on the San Francisco scene’s first psychedelic record, and went on to play the Monterey and Woodstock festivals. His new “neo-psychedelic” release with Parisian guitarist/vocalist Stephan Missri and band is, in a word, extraordinary. It’s trippy, politically and socially conscious, and brilliantly played. Deadheads – Garcia freaks in particular – will love Melton and Missri’s flowing solos, epitomized by the Jerry-esque joyride of “Jamasutra Mantra.” Like the early Allman Brothers Band and Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner with Lou Reed, Melton and Missri create intriguing two-guitar interplay without venturing into overkill. They freak-out Hendrix-style on “Vert,” and Barry resurrects his wicked vibrato of yore for “Le Dernier Homme en Ville.” His sea shanty-cum-ecological call to arms “Shady Grove” recalls his Country Joe & The Fish era and then segues into one of the album’s best jams. International feels abound. Algerian-born Missri sings mostly in French, with a smooth, smoky voice. Rhythms and melodies seamlessly embrace rock, blues, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and African influences. “This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Melton, who’s worked as a public defender in northern California. “Much of my early music was influenced by Middle Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with Country Joe in the 1967 movie Monterey Pop.” Danish bassist Charles Jannic and French drummer Christophe Rossi excel at everything – hats off to these guys, as well as to Melton and Missri for their fine, fine playing and producing. Order this Seafood Records release at www.barrymelton.com and www.jamasutra.com.

Excuse the double posting. I check in here everyday to read, but I just finally added my own first post (hurray!), and sure enough put it under the wrong category. So here's it again, this time under the correct topic... (The vibe at this show was so JerryBobPhil, that all week I've been feeling that I spent the weekend with them. But it was Floyd. A kind Floyd. Sweeeet.) I caught most of the House of Floyd last weekend and just wanted to pass the word, since there's not much Floyd written about here. This was the closest thing to an old Floyd concert that I've experienced, other than the recent Roger/Dave shows. They've got the space jam thing totally together. The Floyd tribute bands I've tried the past few hears have been mostly note for note copying of albums, especially the later albums which I'm not that fond of anyway (I was, just not anymore). House of Floyd played some great tunes and had the right "feel". They didn't copy/peforrm, but actually played the music as if it was their own. So some songs barely even sounded like the originals but it didn't matter at all. And the songs went from one right into the other. Very Dead-like. And the energy was turned on full throughout. This is the only video I've found of the show. I missed about the first half of the first set, but I got to see Echoes (AWESOME!), Shine On II (see video), some tunes I never heard that really jammed, and a Dark Side of the Moon that was full of amazing energy and effects. One of those shows that you wished you knew about in advance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GccbVwEs310

Caught their terrific show last night at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco. Shortly before midnight, Vince Herman (he of Leftover Salmon fame) announced that it was almost 11/11/11. I remarked to my brother how it would be way cool if they played "The Eleven" to commemorate the unique date. Mere seconds after the words left my mouth, they launched into a blistering, high-energy version of that very song. The place went nuts! The band is currently working its way up the west coast. Don't miss 'em if they play anywhere near where you live - a guaranteed good time!

It's so refreshing to see new bands like The Jugtown Pirates(who live in Haight-Asbury) playing their hearts out on their stoop, trying to make it in the business and working extremely hard to become recognized by Gd entourage & deadheads. This is our music!! They submitted three Dead Covers tunes (I Know you Rider, Midnight Moonlight & Jack-a-Roe) in their own style. When I saw them on the Haight, they played a lot of their own music and are starting to get a good following. I wish people would listen to their tunes and help them by voting for them on YouTube. They are playing at Hopmonk in Sebastopol, Ca March 16th and opening for Poor Man's Whiskey at the Great American Music Hall April 21. They are really one of the new up and coming bands in the Bay Area & beyond.Catch the energy ! It's like when the GD started. Their website is www.thejugtownpirates.com. Hope you enjoy too. If you like what you hear, give em a vote on YouTube-Im sure they would appreciate it

Blair has been talking about Tim and Nicki Bluhm is his blog posts and Tim Bluhm has recently finished a bunch of shows with Phil at Terrapin Crossroads. He also did a tour with Billy and Mickey a couple years ago. His main band, The Mother Hips from Chico, CA recently celebrated 20 years together as a band. You might remember them from their psychedelic origins playing the HORDE, Gather of The Vibes and Laguna Seca Daze festivals in the early/mid '90s. Now The Mother Hips are giving away a free download of their 1992 debut album Back To The Grotto until May 30th at the following link: Link: http://bit.ly/MH_BacktotheGrotto Standout tracks are Chum, Precious Opal, This Is A Man and Hey Emilie but many of you are sure to dig the psychedelic stylings of the early Mother Hips, so give it a spin! http://www.motherhips.com/press/images/91-grotto.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nQaOWip3XQ&feature=youtu.be

great Stones-y, warm fuzzy and narcotic drawl. remember buying this when it came out in '93 on vinyl and that piece of shellac never left my turntable for a good long while.low light wreathed in hazy night time smoke. some members went on to form the equally fantastic, if not more so, Califone.
