"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Single shows from my box (1976-1995) will be available at $50 a piece($50 for the 50th anniversary box shows a la cart). Just PM me if you want them... here are the years that are NOT spoken for: 1980 1981 1982 1983 1985 1986 1988 1989 1990 1992*back in the mix 1993*back in the mix This is probably the best deal you're going to see for after market single shows unless they're released as downloads. Even so, the physical copies are nice to have. Cheers -Cactus Jack

Concerning "phantom" orders placed during yesterday's snafu
Please read this if you are one of the folks who got stuck in the "authorizing" phase of ordering this yesterday, and then opened a new window to create an order once it was working. I have noticed that some people's "phantom" orders, where they never got a confirmation email, have posted that dead.net has told them that the system actually assigned order numbers and the orders went through (with no conf email), but others have found that that their phantom orders did not go through - which is probably what they were hoping - and that the preauthorizations for those will come off their cards in a few days. Since this set is beginning to sell out, it would be better to call dead.net and find out which camp you fall in, so you can cancel any phantom orders that actually went through (were assigned order numbers by the system.) You can probably cancel unwanted orders at a later date, but that could be a major inconvenience for some people who may not even know about this set yet if is already sold out when they do find out about it. I called a little bit ago, and found out that my two phantom orders (my third, which I placed after the kind folks here started posting that the site was working properly again) DID go through and were actual orders with order numbers in their system. I never got confirmation emails for those two, only for the third one. The customer service rep was excellent. She knew exactly what had happened and exactly how to fix it. She also placed a note on that third order specifically stating "customer wants to KEEP this order!" just to make sure it isn't accidentally cancelled/removed. She assured me that those two orders should be back in the available "pool" pretty quickly.

Regarding the box, and being a shrewd investor, I guess I take that as a compliment... but mayormarionberry is a jerk, and I get most of what I get from estate sales, but there are some others who, along with me on a few things, do buy a few. That being said, I'm on the fence about one for myself, and will get no more "others". Whether I end up with one in the future, time will tell... There are more important things in life.

OK, thanks! Problem is I would only hear difference on my headphones with my stuff, which I usually only use late at night. May buy "Wake up to find out" to test difference.

The flac-hd files are master sound quality. Basically, when a record company sends music to a vinyl plant for records to be pressed, they send files in this quality. Most of the JGB albums on Livedownloads.com are sold in this quality. CDs are limited to 16bit/44khz quality - the only way to get higher quality is through a DVD-A or Blu ray cd. There is an extremely amount of data in each song. If you were to listen to these files on say a Pono Player or Fii0 X1, X3, or X5 - you would hear the difference immediately. Put it this way, when you listen to Victim Or The Crime from 1990.03.21 on the Spring Too set in 24bit/192khz you can hear every chime and midi effect running through your head as if you were sitting on stage with the band. That is why the USB chip is the same price. Just check out the Wake Up To Find Out show on either HDtracks or Acoustic Sounds. That album alone is 50 bucks. Believe it or not - the USB chip is the better deal. IMHO.

good thing you dont have to pay to watch your seaside chats,, the audio is awful, a little thing called wind makes it worse than listening to an awful audience tape. For somebody who is always picky about sound quality, ya might want to get those things fixed, so its not painful to watch

It seems like this would be an ultimate Dave's Picks with extras, so the price is actually cheaper than 7 years worth of Dave's picks.. or just about the same cost. Definetly worth the cash. This maybe one to pick up an extra copy and keep sealed. Crazy to think that, but this one trumps any Dave's picks going for 200-500 per 3 discs on the secondary market.

This is the big announcement I was hoping, but didn't actually believe, you guys would make! The price is intimidating at first, but it Does break down to less than $10 a disc, and I'm sure it will come with some real goodies!

Four things:1) This is only 7 more CDs than the Europe 72 box but costs another $250?!? WTF? 2) The USB version with no CDs costs the same as the physical version?!? WTF? 3) I am assuming since it says specifically says these shows will not be sold individually as CDs that they will be offering them as digital downloads. 4) You can already see the list of shows by looking at the 4 disc version on iTunes.

I can definitely say no to this one. While interesting, especially the early Pigpen era shows and some of the Brent era, there is absolutely no way this family guy can rationalize this one to the Mrs. Wish they would do some a la carte shows, but there you have it. I find this release a bit unfortunate-- only 7,500 people will have these shows in legitimate format (not copied). A few hot shows are going out of circulation for the masses. I gotta believe something like 9/18/87 would sell a lot of copies a la carte. They just went too big and priced many folks out. Alas, there is always Dave's Picks.

I knew something that was not affordable was coming our way but jeez. Tickets are sky high and so is this box set. Sorry I am not a hippie that turned yuppie. I am a gen x that is struggling to obtain the american way. lol. Any way why not break it down per decade on cd format. Another suggestion is to drop it down to down loadable format per show.(minus all the glitter and box) To all those that can afford it get it. I am sure you will enjoy. Well deserved and I am sure its beautiful. Peace.

Only the band themselves will be able to afford this. It's also very greedy to not split up the shows so people of limited means, which is basically their entire fanbase, can cobble this together over time.

My wife would kill me ten ways to Sunday if I even thought of it. lol I made a suggestion up above. It seems like there is no way to celebrate the dead at all this year in an affordable way. I also thought that they would be releasing more shows and trinkets this year. oh well rock on.

There is not a chance that I can get wife approval for this one... Just goes to show how shamefully out of touch this corporation is with its fan base - seriously, a limited edition $700 box set in this economy. What a sick joke. Now we have months of torture while we see what shows are revealed. Great.

No way can I afford this and the wife would kill me too! I gotta agree with someone earlier mentioning how all the 50th stuff is so expensive. 700$ is just too much money right now especially with no advanced notice whatsoever for the presale. Thanks Dave nice to see that the show will not be available individually on CD or electronically. Gotta say this one stings, even more so than not being able to get a ticket to a single Santa Clara or Chicago show. Please make these available for individual purchasing or electronic download. Seriously.

There it is. There are some really nice shows in there. Some fine 80s shows too. I also can't afford to drop $700 on dead shows. That is not in the family budget. Why not make some sort of pre-order for individual shows and print more?? I gotta say I find this all pretty sad and nauseating. Everything that's come down for 2015 has been so high cost. This is so exclusive. This is one more run at the money. I think I need a break from dead.net

I hope they are sold individually at 24/96. That would suck if the only way to get them in that quality is via the $700 USB chip. Here is a great place for all the setlists: https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~./gdead/setlists.html I am so looking forward to the 83/84/85 shows.

Hard to make it out from all that wind but I believe Dave said that for $700 & if you order it during pre-sale it gets hand delivered to your door by either Bob, Phil, Micky or Bill. After the presale you get Donna. In all seriousness I have that same feeling of rejection that I got when my Fare thee well envelope was returned. It's going to be epic yet most probably out of reach. Wish it was closer to $500, I'll have to settle for the comp.

Good point... appears to be catered to the "Dom Perignon" crowd ;) for sure not the Joe Six-pack crowd :)

If anyone wants to order an extra CD set I'd be looking to trade an original Musitronics Mutron III pedal with the box, a sealed Daves Picks Vol. 4 and/or some amount of cash in to sweeten the deal. Let me know if we can work something out!

Since the 50th kicked off, I have read many posters here who wanted / predicted a box with 30 shows, one from each year. Now here it is and many are complaining about the price. I have always said, be careful what you ask for. I mean, what did you expect? 80 discs was going to be a lot of coin no matter how you cut it. It is too rich for my wallet, but I am sure it will sell out and I am sure it will be awesome. Rock on

because i can't justify spending $700 for the entire box set. i'm sure it will sell out eventually, and perhaps someday it will sell for a lot more than $700 on ebay. unfortunately, i must pass on this release. ----

those managing the grateful dead aren't fools. like the koch brothers they realize their product has dwindling appeal, and they just want to strike while the iron is still hot. those who love the grateful dead are a dying breed. its sad, but true. the grateful dead are just trying to cash in, and maximize profits while they still can. its the same reason the koch brothers buy elections. we all know fossil fuels will eventually lose out to clean energy. its just a matter of time. ----

i agree, many did predict this... but, others where hoping maybe the 30 show crowd would be wrong... or at least, there would be something a little more manageable for the rest of us who couldn't do 700 dollars and there still might be! the year is still half-young

Phil, I really hope you don't serve Dom ice cold. What a waste, my friend. Anyway, 11/14/73 not being a future Dave's Pick hurts. Great shows on this set.

Thanks to all the users for years of expression. Good to know there are others out there like me who love our band dearly. I'm a first time post. Didn't get on bus until 1980 but rode it well over 300 times. 35 years of deadicated support. I love my extensive audio collection from all eras. Gotta say though I'm disappointed in the $700. box. Granted 30 unreleased shows is fantastic and well priced. We know the band can blow us away. They didn't have to prove it so abruptly. Wish they would have done increments of 5 years released 6 times throughout the year or something similar. Oh well, just another picky DeadHead. Enjoy and see you at Levi.

You know - I thought the Spring 1990 (The Other One) set would sell out, and yet, a year later, there are still boxes available. I think its silly (and a loss of viable income for band members) to not have these shows available for digital download.

Dave says "a couple" are mixed from multi-track and seems to unintentionally spill the beans that it is two. My guess is the 69 and 89 shows. Very excited about this release!

I did it... yes, reluctantly, I did it. My wife would absolutely kill me if she knew, but I have until Sept 18 to worry about that... As a release...I guess I had to do it so I___ (I'm drawing a blank here) I guess I would have felt bad if I missed the bus and heard how great a ride it was... so now I'm on a parked bus waiting until Sept to start moving! I hope it's worth it...you guys really didn't have to price it so high... you could have at least carved it up into 4 parts (FWIW).
