Not that I needed a reason to think about it, but the Contest really has me thinking about when and how the vault is going to be opened. What is undeniable upon listening to the free songs that have been available for download is how good the sound quality is. An officially released version of many of these shows would be a major upgrade to what already circulates. So when is this going to happen and how? The when is important for 2 reasons: (1) how many years can they conceivably continue to make money on the band, and (2) isn't there some obligation to older deadheads to allow them to get these shows? I don't know how much longer they can continue to make money off the band, but I don't think it is infinite. I think there are more deadheads passing away than there are being born. Now there definitely are kids in their teens and 20's that are being turned on to the band. But are these people really buying shows. They've grown up in a different world, where paying for music is an anachronism. I don't think they are buying like older deadheads are. I tend to think there is a limited amount of time to make money on the band. Even if I am wrong, and there is a long time left, isn't there some obligation to the people who made the band what it is. If you were 20 in 1970, you're 60 now. I hope we all live until we are 100, but being realistic, many of the original deadheads probably only have another 20 or so years left. Even those of us that are younger (I'm 37) don't have eternity. I think the when is soon. As to the how, running some numbers, let's say that a person wants to have 1000 shows. At $20 per show, that comes to $20,000. That's a lot of money. I'm certainly not spending that much money over a short period. Some may say that a person is not entitled to as many shows as they want. And I'd agree. But then areyou would be saying that only the wealthy deserve to have a lot of shows. I'm sure we'd all say that isn't right. So $20 per show is too expensive, which means you can't release everything on CD (which is probably not feasible anyways). So it needs to be released for download. And for much per show? MAybe $10 per show is fair, especially when Rhino would only have to remaster the show and pay for server space, and not have to pay for the CD's, the sleeves, the jewel cases, etc. Or you have yearly subscriptions, charging say $100 a year and allowing a maximum of 20 show downloads per member. So will everything be available to download? Again probably not feasible. But uploading 100 or 200 shows per year certainly is. I would make a list, using the input of your friend the late Dick Lavala, as well as the Davids, and others, of shows that are the likeliest of possible future official releases (for which you can charge the usual $20), and NOT upload those shows. For example, for 1977, you could argue that 5/5 -5/9, 5/12, 5/17, 10/2, 10/16, 10/29, 11/4 and 12/27 would make great offical releases, and thus won't be uploaded. But everything else should be. Needless to say, lossless and not just mp3 is an absolute must. I hope something happens soon. At the current rate of 10 shows per year, and estimating that maybe 200 shows have already been released and that there are a total of 2000 shows in the vault (which is probably not that far off), the vault will be entirely open by 2190. I feel pretty safe saying that none of us are going to be alive then. Please, get moving, take advantage of the energy this promotion has created and get the vault, or least a part of it, online ASAP. Thanks!

6/5/69, the show Dark Star from day 2 of the 30 day thing is taken from, is just about a no-brainer. And 3/14/81 (Althea day 3) doesn't even circulate on SBD!

There's a reason David Gans has played a lot of this show on the Dead Head Hour, it's great! I strongly believe that any '84 release should contain a "Help > Slip > Franklin's" since that is representative (as a "West L.A. Fadeaway" would be representative of 1983... hint, and perhaps an "Esau", also!). Look, 1984 is due to come up in the rotation at some point, right? Marin Vet's is OK (nice, even), but that has been around for a long time in very good quality, and it doesn't have the sizzle that this show has!!! This one's a keeper! I guarantee there will lots of praise for this representing '84! It's one of the best of the year, undoubtedly. Thanks! Tip o' the skull to ya! Plus, there should be lots of East Coasters and D.C. Heads that will pick this up, and many people who followed that tour! "Help > Slip > Franklin's" ALWAYS draws an audience, and that Set II is off the hook (as is the "Let It Grow", one of the funkiest and most ripping versions of the 80s! Listen to it!!!). A great "Brent show", also! Peace.

Why don't you release sth. from outside the US??? The "Rockpalast" show was incredible... the boys on foreign ground following The Who... and they did it well, folks! You could call the set list average, but... Sugaree, Shakedown, Deal, Estimated > He's gone > into a rare pre-drums O1 which ends screaming in hyperspace are worth to be officially released!! Everything after drumz is with Pete Townsend and the boys really take off during the 2nd set! No vocal glitches, no mistakes make this a very fine show...!

It might be the last remaining audio visual frontier they have yet to explore. They could intersperse concert footage and base it on several timelines of interesting events. I'd like to see a computer game released.

The matrix of this show was done very carefully and there deserves to be follow-up from the Rhino side and a release of this one in it's entirety similar to Nightfall of Diamonds. Note: This was a two encore show. Bertha>Good Lovin' the first encore and JBG the second.

There have been so many great guests appear with the boys /girl :>) I could write a book...so from the Beach Boys to Edie Brickell there should be a CD set with guests. Hows that sound? Eric

consider Bruce and Branford. Is it the Hampton show that has that amazing Bird Song? In general, I agree with you though, if only because (Cipollina being a prime example) they were pretty much reduced to playing standards that were in their common vocabulary. Mileage varies considerably though.

Nice Post Marye! There's no doubt the spring '77 stuff is worthy, however, there's so many soundboard quality shows in circulation it would seem to be a duplication of effort to officially release them. Perhaps we have Betty to thank for this? Hey DrkStr Paul: Check out DP #29 & Download Series #1 for your Palladium show. How 'bout the New Year's run '87-'88? Great shows, and I would gladly plop down $30 for it.

No one show would accomplish this, but I'd love to have a CD with good live versions of all the original songs, and some of the covers, that were performed after "Built to Last." Good versions of Liberty, Eternity, Days Between, So Many Roads, Way to Go Home, Lazy River Road, Corrina, Easy Answers, If the Shoe Fits, Samba in the Rain, as well as covers like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, It's All Too Much, etc. Steve Premo -- Santa Cruz, California "If there's ever an answer, it's more love" - Tim O'Brien

Marye says: "Our friends the Rhinos have various and sundry new releases in the development process." Pardon my skepticism, but when are we going to see this stuff? My personal opinion is that the lack of new releases is causing the customers (i.e., us) to lose interest. I'd like to see 3 or 4 new CD releases, plus a DVD, every year. I know I am probably in a small minority but I loved the way the Dead did the old Irish folk song Maid of Fifeo. I heard them do it at a show, had an old soundboard tape which I can no longer find. Is it on any show CDs now ? Tanks to anyone who knows. Burt Bayonne628@aol.com

You are gonna' have to provide a little more info. I searched "maid" "maide" and "fifeo" in Deadbase and there were no matches for song titles containing any of those words. Other possible titles or spellings? Richard

That which you seek may be the Bonnie Lass of Fyvie-o, a folk song also known as Fennario. Peggy-O is a variant of this and although Deadbase does not mention it, the Setlists site returns two hits on 'Fennario' 05/25/95- Memorial Stadium - Seattle, WA 06/04/95- Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA Whether the Dead sang a different version in those shows or any others I do not know Here is one version There once was a troop o' Irish dragoons Cam marching doon through Fyvie-o And the captains fall in love wi' a very bonnie lass And her name it was cad pretty Peggy-o There's many a bonnie lass in the Howe o Auchterless There's many a bonnie lass in the Garioch There's many a bonnie Jean in the streets of Aiberdeen But the floor o' them aw lyes in Fyvie-o O come doon the stairs, Pretty Peggy, my dear Come doon the stairs, Pretty Peggy-o Come doon the stairs, comb back your yellow hair Bid a long farewell to your mammy-o It's braw, aye it's braw, a captain's lady for to be And it's braw to be a captain's lady-o It's braw to ride around and to follow the camp And to ride when your captain he is ready-o O I'll give you ribbons, love, and I'll give you rings I'll give you a necklace of amber-o I'll give you a silken petticoat with flounces to the knee If you'll convey me doon to your chamber-o What would your mother think if she heard the guineas clink And saw the haut-boys marching all before you o O little would she think gin she heard the guineas clink If I followed a soldier laddie-o I never did intend a soldier's lady for to be A soldier shall never enjoy me-o I never did intend to gae tae a foreign land And I never will marry a soldier-o I'll drink nae more o your claret wine I'll drink nae more o your glasses-o Tomorrow is the day when we maun ride away So farewell tae your Fyvie lasses-o The colonel he cried, mount, boys, mount, boys, mount The captain, he cried, tarry-o O tarry yet a while, just another day or twa Til I see if the bonnie lass will marry-o Twas in the early morning, when we marched awa And O but the captain he was sorry-o The drums they did beat o'er the bonnie braes o' Gight And the band played the bonnie lass of Fyvie-o Long ere we came to the Howe of Auchterless We had our captain to carry-o And long ere we won into the streets of Aberdeen We had our captain to bury-o Green grow the birks on bonnie Ythanside And low lie the lowlands of Fyvie-o The captain's name was Ned and he died for a maid He died for the bonnie lass of Fyvie-o

OK, while I'm at it: 12-1-71 Best Cryptical > Other One ever???? also, pretty much anything from that lost fall tour of 72 that might turn up would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

A road trips #2 would be perfect. A whole show from the already highlighted fall 79 tour would be cool. Something that isn't on Road trips #1. Also 4/29/72 that we heard the track from on mondays tapers section would be cool. I'd like all of europe 72 someday. Why not get started. One more I would love something from the 86-89 time I don't think I have any live material from this time and I can't find any official releases either.

I wish they would release a cd of a Deer Creek show from late eighties or early nineties. or a box set from all of them or a road trips with the best of each show. Deer Creek was always a head favorite place to see the boys. I had a lot of great and crazy times there. The riots in 95 sucked but I think a good release would over shadow that incident. I still have the ticket in perfect condition from the show that was cancelled due to the riots. I would also love to see a release from Cincinnati 1989. That was a very good show but I've had a hard time finding a great copy. Please don't forget the Heads from the midwest. The Alpine dvd was good but I would like to see more.

Ladies & Gentleman, the Grateful Dead was not enough. We should get the entire week the dead played, from April 25 to April 29th, 1971. With special guests each night like the Beach Boys, Allman Bros, TC, that entire week shoud come out as a mini box set. Pretty please =) Then, the last night of the 1973 tour at the Boston Garden. Three sets of pure heaven. -EW
