Bobby Ace and the rest of boys were playin' their hearts out. JK was outstanding on Doin' That Rag. Major meltdown during New Potatoe, came back during Dear Prudence. This was a killer show. 4-5 stars. My first show at this venue since "The Rainbow Show" Furthur Festival in 98.

On Wednesday, August 31, 2011, Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers (J.V. Collier, John “JT” Thomas, Bobby Read, Doug Derryberry, & Sonny Emory) take the stage at Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club (located at 89 South Street, New York, NY 10038) to deliver a show inspired by all genres, pop, jazz, bluegrass, country and modern classical music. the wheel is turning

i am glad this band still tours. sure it's not the same as being in Hebron OH with Jerry singing "...by the waterside I will rest my bones ...." but if I was expecting that from a band without Jerry Garcia, to me, it would be akin to asking why doesn't my square fit into your circle? Like, how could it? anyway, I also remember Arlo with Furthur years back.....hearing Alice's Restaurant was un-real. bobby doing hound dog, black crows. i will say that those early furthur fest's were incredible, all day, rock your socks off events. gates opened at like 2pm, and it was ON....until you simply fell out from sheer delightful exhaustion! it would be cool to see something that size again go about the country. i might be inclined to do that tour. at 38, Id better do it before I get too old, eh ;) see you all in Eugene! Ha, ha! Don't we humans just love complicating matters?!!But seriously though, folks, i hope my comments don't come across as too critical or mean-spirited or a "downer". Real hard to see what they read like in another person's mind. I am writing it with nothing but a big smile, a twinkle in the eye and a rippling excitement in the fingers. I'm certainly not "bashing" Furthur, by any means. Far from it. I have enjoyed listening to some of their shows. There is some wonderful playing and it is has been my great pleasure to lose myself in their flickering jams; like bobbing in warm water, the brain gently rocked in it's cradle. I definitely don't sit there "anal(anal?)ysing" the music furiously. No way. Not what music means to me. Let it wash over you and warm your heart. I truly believe if one let's that beautiful human ability of intuition, of spontaneity, of open improvisation to manifest itself, to flower and bloom in the most natural way (what makes life so INCREDIBLE! we truly live in a universe of sheer WONDER) that we cannot "control" what the music means to us. When it's happening, when it's "on", and the joy and warmth in your heart begins to rise, then complete surrender is the only logical state to exist in. I'm sure Furthur will do that for me at some point. Just cannot explain why my mind can start to wander, to drift off and not fully "connect". It's by not thinking at all; by being so completely open that i've seemed to arrive at these feelings, so i have to honour that emotion. Would be disrespectful of me not to. And i certainly don't mind the "slowing down", ha ha!! I heartily encourage it!! As i get older too, (nearly 39 and counting), a more languid pace is the more appealing. I really enjoyed the Scaring The Children sets at Jam Cruise, and Ratdog's laid back approach to the Dead cannon. I love hearing songs completely reduced to a crawl. I think it can open up a whole world of possibilities in their meaning. I find that by "versioning" songs in my own head, hearing what they would sound like if the framework was almost on the very verge of collapse, makes you hear the words in an astonishing way; they can sound positively incantatory. (Helps of course when the words are the quality of Hunter's/Weir's/Barlow's - Lesh's too!). A little example...... A slight fork in the road here folks, just a little tangent, so forgive me - I was listening to the Grateful Dead, i do believe it was 9/16/90 - Madison Square Garden (but could've been 12/29/77 - Winterland) while doing overtime at work, the year of 2004, July 24 ; my father was terminally ill with cancer; visited him at home in his bed that morning. Told him a joke and made him laugh, my lasting memory (for the record? "What do the donkeys on Blackpool beach get for lunch? Half an hour..." Guess you had to be there....!). Mid-morning and suddenly, THAT phone call comes; "Has he?..." "Yes..."; dying, thankfully, in my mother's arms. While locking up and making my way straight to the family home, i realise that the time at which he died, coincided with Bob singing "Looks Like Rain". It certainly does... That was when the song began drifting through my mind, entering my consciousness with the most natural of ease, like it was just meant to be there (just absolutely PERFECT), on my way to catch the train, in the slowest version ever (not) heard. That ending vocal refrain, in that wonderful song, almost spoken so slow instead of sung, the melody almost buckling under the funereal pace, became revelatory. Try it with other songs, in your own head. They shine in a completely different way. (Thurston Moore does a great slow take on The Beach Boy's "Here Today", that is well worth listening to). I don't know. Maybe putting these thoughts to paper (screen), only makes you travel in more and more circles. Is it really necessary? Is any "criticism" or point view worth a ... Can sometimes have the ability to generate chinese whispers, and the original emotion can twist and turn and you end up going off at a tangent. Er, what was i saying again?! Case in point? Please see above... Knowing me, i will probably fall head over heels after one glorious "meeting" with Furthur and then not even recognise the person who wrote what he wrote! (will probably happen tonight too, just to reinforce a position of "the butt of some great Cosmic joke"!!). I guess the Dead in it's many hydra-headed forms and configurations compel this kind of "deep thinking" (or waffling)!! How many other bands can stir such emotion? Thanks everyone, especially lamagonzo, for the replies. Feels good.

Think you missed some of my point. Which is that you can't help getting old. Getting old makes you slow down. It's not a conscious thing. These guys are late 60s, over 70. Unless they're mainlining human growth hormone they are going to slow down. These days I feel Furthur shows are like (pardon my drug metaphor) a heroin nod with an occasional ride on Casey Jones train. I'm perfectly happy to go but I think you'll find me dreaming dead dreams and surprisingly few of us who saw Jerry play getting up and dance unless we really feel like it and/or it's out favorite song or suite of music. This is my view. To each his own. I'm just a crusty ole' Deadhead. You want to hear tails of days gone past keep passin' the kind. I get the feeling you're a COD yuhself jonapi, just speaking about those wide-eyed Furthurtheads looking at me with those wide-eyes, hoping against all odds to climb out of a time machine. ~ Just one thing for me ~

I agree about Jerry and the respect issue; you can almost hear that throaty, bubbling laugh of his and see the raising of an eyebrow.As for The Dead '09, well i thought some of it was interesting; being a lover of drums and percussion, there would be no danger of myself taking a toilet break during that section! The "sounds of the universe" injections were most welcome. Wished they could've prolonged/interacted with those sounds a bit deeper (hard to tell from the speakers, but another "visionary" human at the sound desk would've been good; pan those sonic booms across the stereo spectrum in a righteous radical fashion.....damn, why does every Head always think that they could do better??!!!!). Not sure what you meant by "maybe the drummers are tired of playing Dead music" though; both are still playing the music. I thought Tim Bluhm was a great addition to the Rhythm Devils, Andy Hess too (i'll gracefully skip over Davy Knowles' american-accented vocalisations...!). And Bill still seems to be the only one adding a fresher slant to the Dead repertoire, in 7 Walkers. Witness the recent shows with the mighty Kirk Joseph parading that sousaphone; inspired. The performance of "Death Don't Have No Mercy" in the Relix basement, while not mind expanding, had WAY more feel and swampy soul than anything Furthur are going to muster. As for "a taste of what it used to be like"? With all due respect, i'm going to pass on that. I don't want a taste of something that has already evaporated into the ether. The Grateful Dead finished in 1995. Any similar ambience is, at best, illusionary. I too appreciate the evolution of the musicians, any musicians, but especially those shining "core four"; the times have certainly changed. I'm just hoping that some of those involved may recognise it a little more and truly blow our minds. (I don't buy the "mellowing with age" application; i don't think anyone's asking for coruscating noise and avant garde auditory strafing, but resting on that comfy cushion of predictability sure does leave one witha feeling of gentle lethargy). I know, i know... too much of this criticism helped drive a stake through the heart of the Dead's later years; all that expectation makes for a heavy weight on a human being who just wants to play their instrument. But i shudder to think that any "recreations" and "playing it safe" is a conscious decision on Furthur's part; the cold, kiss of death i feel. I'll take it for what it is. I'll continue to go with it. How long is another matter. I get the feeling Furthur might not go with it for much longer either. But as long as they're still playing music i'll be there. Every step of the way. Just to see what happens. I do believe it. I certainly need it. I'll leave it if necessary. And i DARE them to get WEIRDER!!!!!!! Boy, I told my Daughter and wife that the show started at 6 and darned if they were not like "they never start on time" as we find the lot (finally, good 7 block walk) and I say to them, "that must be an old tape of the dead, I can hear Jerry singing??". Well, smack my bottom if I didn't miss a good chunk of the 1st set but it weren't Jerry, but the dude had some real shades of the smokey voice of Jerry after the 80s..and the guitar was pretty Charlie Brownish too....you know Wop do Wop wop wop wop bwa wop--when the parents talk. So we get in for tail of 1st set...a mile away since he field was closed and only the youngens' could handle that pack up front....but it was freaking great! Then the second set rolls in, I know I should name the songs but I am sure the set list is around...so Bobby was a bit laid back for a while but in the second set he came into his own...so let's just say I have not hear the Wheel since Radio City in 1980 sittin in the 12th row with Peter Paul and Mary (RIP Mary Travers)....well baby, I duuno if it was a gift for me but MAN, they nailed that mother.....still think it may be just the top of my list ever....and then, they finish with Ripple! If I gotta leave the planet without seeing Jerry another time (of course I have seen him in dreams at various "dreaming" concerts dozens of times, and I know he is coaching my horn playing as a silent tutor)...but this would leave me with enough to go with a smile! Thanks Phil, Bobby, and the rest of the Further boys for a real good time. My daughter (16 now) sez to me, "these people are the coolest people I have ever seen"--this after she has been to oh, 3 Dead shows, 7 Rat Dog shows and the first Further--it finally dawned on her that she is a chip off the old man block! Really nice way to end June on the nicest Day of the Year in MA. And the new Hunter tune, yeah, I could not catch all the words but it got my tear ducts flowing just cuz I knew it was something that he wrote.....Jerry was smiling down on us....man, the whippit vendors after the show were brazen and the cops in Lowell were strategically stationed to only direct trafffic and not bust a single souls chops...boy now to go back to a Nassau show and have cops like that. Great day in Lowell, and only 10 mins. from home. Hey now! I looked to head there in the 1st set and had to see the single longest beer line in the history of humanity... i mean those people must have watched the whole 1st set waiting for a Coors. (I found the short one fortunately and made it back to my seat by next song)...just a funny side note... "we used to play for silver, now we play for Coors?" If so ... please post a review. I heard the first night Weir was embarrasingly jacked up? The second night was better but not great? That reminds me of the RatDog tour last year about this time when Bobby looked like death. Take care of yourself Bobby, please!! "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. Didn't go, but I heard from an Old Head that Bobby had a really really bad night Wednesday. Mary, it wasn't the usual forget the lyrics and mumble something that we grew to accept, but he couldn't even get started. I am concerned that the pace is too great for these guys. Slow down guys, you can't need the money that badly. Your no longer in your 20s and 30s, or even 50s. "That path is for, your steps alone."

I really appreciate that Bob loves what he does (how many people can truely say that?) and that he (must) in some way feel obligated to keep the torch constantly lit. However Bob in general runs himself ragged. I mean I just go on one week-long road trip and I am wiped out for a couple of days afterward. I couldn't imagine constantly feeling tired like he must. Plus when he is in a funk I think he's up to more than just over-working. Smoke some pot and stay away from that other crap! I know its none of my business but we care about you Bobby! At 54 I'm a few years younger than Bobby but going to one show takes a lot more recovery time that it used too! Can't imagine if I were traveling for days at a time, playing almost every night and trying to keep all those fans happy! Take care of your self, Bob. Please!

Bob is going on 64

Phil is 70. It is actually amazing they are still touring. Slow down would seem to be the operative advice, if they really need to keep going. They don't need to tour until they drop. I'm so grateful for the music they've been making. A good, organic retirement would be so much more satisfying then the alternative.

Years not Months~Slow down...

Personally I'd like to see them over then next 5 years not 30 times in 3 months...Bobby was scaring me too the first set @ Vibes was a little rough while he was recovering. Second set he found his voice and seemed to feel alot better, although tired the whole time. Take a Break guys, then when you feel refreshed, don't let the person who made the tour schedule do it again...Town's so far back and forth, the route was really whacked with no dates in between for rest, just funky travel. Make it a few days here and a few days up the road. Chill it out a bit and give more breaks. Please Bobby take care of yourself, we want to see you rockin for another 20 years. ♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥

Try this and it works for some (just got off the phone with someone here on dead.net that it didn't work for but another it did) 1. Clear your internet Browser cache and Cookies (everything) a. Firefox- Tools>Clear Recent History select all (check marks) and press clear now b. Internet Explorer- Tools>Internet Options>General>Browsing History>Delete Make sure all are selected and delete. 2. Close Browser 3. Restart computer Should pop up when you go to the site now....if not you'll have to wait till the bug for (I think it's different operating systems) this is fixed....otherwise PM me for help. Boxer Rebellion

I wish Phil and Bobby (Furthur) would stay out of partisan politics altogether. I mean, I can't imagine Jerry doing a benefit for Barbara Boxer. If they would take a minute and think back I bet they, themselves (Phil and Bobby) couldn't imagine the Grateful Dead doing such a divisive thing. It used to be practically an anathema for these guys to tell people for whom they should vote. It's Not the Grateful Dead

Bob and Mickey played at an event for Al Gore in early '00 and Phil and Mickey played at a John Kerry rally in the spring of '04. And don't forget the two concerts in '08 for Obama. We're now 15 years into the post-Grateful Dead era. A lot has changed and the boys have felt more comfortable over the past 10 years to express their political opinions. Politics

Paraphrasing Jerry: Choosing the lesser of two evils, is still choosing evil. In my opinion, if Jerry were still alive, I doubt the boys would be endorsing candidates. We will never know. However, the big guy has been gone for over 15 years, and the rest of the band is certainly free to do as they choose. There is no Grateful Dead anymore. The Grateful Dead vibe has been long gone. Personally, I would prefer that they stay out of the political arena, but I know that it is not the Grateful Dead, but rather Phil and Bobby and Mickey and Bill expressing themselves. It doesn't change things for me. "That path is for, your steps alone."

Furthur Setlists year 1~Complete

Hey now all, I compiled a setlist document which is easy to read (and search) of all the setlists so far (including rehearsals) that the boys have played. It's really a drag hearing folks hype apolitical. Just read the notes in Dead Base and you'll see where the boys sympathies lie (benefits for the Black Panthers to the Cambodians) . Want more evidence? Look at the RT 3.3 to see the the fist symbol on the drum, representing the SDS student movement, I believe. It is questionable if Jerry would have allowed endorsing a candidate and I agree that the rest of them should do as they please. The cognitive dissonance was too much seeing them play in tuxs at Obama's Inaugural Ball, though...

Happy Birthday Furthur 1 Year !

Happy Birthday Furthur ! One year ago,Furthur played their first 3 shows in Oakland, California at The Fox Theater. I recall everyone being so excited and happy to be seeing Bobby and Phil play together again... anticipation, about John Kadlecik and what would be next. I think we all were thrilled to see how Furthur ended up touring all over the country for more than 40 shows, bringing back all the wonders of the music and magic of taking the Bus Furthur... a little bit Furthur than youve gone before ! I ended up going to 28 shows and they were all so good, its amazing to see Bobby and Phil on tour after 40 years ! Theres a whole bunch more coming up too ! have a blast in Colorado you guys ! its been a great year ! I hope to see you a little Furthur, what a long strange trip its been , Liz Kempf OO play on- KEEP LISTENING

Red Rocks Smoked!

My ears are still smoldering from how hot that was. With the most spiritual venue in the world, I think Furthur really made each night their own. Ohhh and new songs??? We got tons of them...my favorite being the new Bobby tune Big Bad Blues. Thanks to all who helped make our Dead.netter feel welcome and home when we came out there. Sorry I missed you Critter. So for starters the whole "mountain" theme for the weekend was brilliant! Plus I love the new songs and I think they pretty much played them all. Then for Friday you just cannot beat the Scarlet>Big bad blues>Mnts of the moon>Prophet>Eyes>Fire, holy sheet that was good. But what really got me that night was the Death Don't Have No Mercy, Bobby nailed it and nailed it hard! I still get goosebumps thinking of it. Who says he can't sing? Baloney! For Saturday, well this was a night I personally will never forget, I had the privilege to meet Phil and hang out on the stage, that right there was a dream come true on many levels. This was the single best Furthur show I have seen. Not a dull moment the whole night, I can't even pick a moment that was the best of the night because every song they played was off the hook. But going in and out of Viola Lee and the Terrapin Suite made me feel like the "old days" again. Just spectacular! For Sunday the He's Gone left the whole place in tears, I could barely hold them back! I was just tickled to hear Big RR Blues, man it was awesome. The only negative musically was the Days Between, sorry but it kind of deflated the rest of the night and weekend for me but over all this was one of the best weekends of my life. Yes, Marye, we did get some wonderul shows, and then some.

First off, there is NO place like Red Rocks (take a look at their site http://www.redrocksonline.com/pages/concerts/detail.asp?id=3970 ) to get a peek at their peak. Temps were high 70's during the day (except at those higher elevations;o} ) and low 50's for the shows. And we got to see the (harvest) moon rising over Denver as we waited for Furthur to start playing was just icing on the cake. A tremendous combination of natural visuals and Furthur aural delights that night. I enjoyed this version of post Dead offerings quite a bit. Phil is the mystro and really runs the show. He had numerous incidents of fantasic bass runs especially during Friday's Scarlet Begonias through that densely packed group of songs until Fire on the Mountain. And he was raining Phil bombs mercilously on us during Saturday's the Other One. Friday, Bob had pulled out that pink guitar he used in the '80s and the sound was way too trebley and faint for the Rocks, but then on Saturday he switched back to another guitar and it all sounded much better. Shimmering rhthym chops cascading up to us in the crowd. Jeff Chimenti on keys is a star, a monster, a force to be reconded with, and more than willing to assert himself and his vision so very well. That was welcome especially with his tickling the ivorys on the baby grand on Friday's Eyes and then pounding that Hammond on Death Don't have No Mercy. John Kadlecik's guitar playing included has some tasty chops but the added treat was his voice. Great vocals every time he sang. Much of his guitar tone is reminiscent of Garcia, but not really a copy in any way. I must rave about Joe Russo who takes a back seat to no one with his drumming abilities. He is a beast! Having one drummer also made Futher's transitions quite a bit quicker than sometimes the duo drummers can achieve. Like back in the 60's Grateful Dead with just Billy, the band could 'turn on a dime' and they usually did. Actually these shows were the best that I have ever heard Phil's voice. Really, and those 'back-up/harmony singers Jeff Pehrson & Sunshine Becker are truly are a fantastic addition to this group,... wraping their sweet voices around the other singer's voices. They added much to those harmonys and their contribution on the acappella finish to UJB was one of the nicest I have heard. Friday was a joy and then Saturday was an extravaganza, and embarrasment of riches with much jamming, riffing, and fantastic arrangements- the whole enchilata: the complete Terrapin Suite > the Eleven > Unbroken Chain(!) > Darkstar > Stella Blue> The Other One shook the Rocks. And I agree with JSFC, that first half with the Help > Slip > Franklins right out of the gate. No rules anymore for when they play what. The old stuff is getting great treatment esp. that Viola Lee Blues triple decker club sandwich. Wasn't it tasty, Jack? Mary and I were out to Colorado as our 30th anniversary gift to one another. We went out into the mountains each day, the Aspens have turn a spanking yellow, contrasted against the bright green of the Evergreens, with an occasional Oak a burning red orange that jumps up to you. When we went up to drive on the highest highway in the USA, those vistas were outstanding and then we toured back to some familar spots we have been to 32 years earlier on the first visit to Red Rocks (er, and then remember the 1979 'Fire on the Mountain story' -from Stories Told Round the Campfire thread?.. no, then never mind). Those shows were head shakin', laugh out loud, falling down, crying, unbefuckinliveable. We had to be back to work on Monday so we left on Sunday. In the old days, I couldn't have left without attending that next Sunday show. But I left that one for another Deadhead to relish. Furthur really filled my cup with those shows. And the Rocks sure rocked last weekend. Another time of my life

My first GD concert was in Utica NY 3-22-73, and I have always regarded that as one of the very peak experiences I've ever had. I live on the east coast, but fly out to Denver annually to visit my son. I went later than usual this year because I saw there were tickets available for Furthur at Red Rocks on 9-26. Sometimes it has seemed like, at 62, peak experiences were to be no more - not true! I had another time of my life last Sunday! Red Rocks is beyond a perfect place for a concert; it's what the gods would arrange if they were promoting a show - a natural bowl surrounded by towering rock monoliths with a view out to Denver and beyond. The sound is great, and the benches are arranged so that one can sit down (the air is a little thin out there) or have room to stand up and boogie. That night a golden, just-past-full moon rose right over Denver just as the band was flowing into St. Stephen. And the crowd is so joyous and together and just having a great time. The show itself was way better than I had hoped. Opening with Golden Road into Cassidy, I had tears in my eyes as I danced. 37 years fell away. Throwing Stones got very intense, and the set ended with a Big Railroad Blues that was just a headlong rush. The second set began with Samson & D, which I've been digging lately for some reason, followed by Mr. Fantasy, one of my favorite alltime songs. St. Stephen was a highlight for me since I've long identified with that song, and Furthur really hit it hard. They cranked into an intense Wheel into a joyous full length Sugar Mag. Touch of Grey and Brokedown Palace were enchor. Palace was especially poignant on the bands last night here. They played hard, tight and right, charging ahead and turning on a dime. Bob and Phil were both in fine voice, and if I hear any bitching about JK on lead guitar and vocals you're gonna have to fight me. The keyboard and drumming are also awesome. It was such a thrill to be able to share that with my son, who has very wide ranging and adventurous taste in music, but was totally into the Grateful Dead universe thanks to Furthur at Red Rocks. All my life the Grateful Dead have meant so much to me. I know this isn't them, but Phil and Bob and the band are keeping that music, that spirit, that vibe alive and more - they're moving it...Furthur! ~ I'll meet you some morning in the sweet by and by
