The Grateful Dead's last touring show of 1977 finds them going for broke, taking chances on fan favorites like "Jack Straw," "Friend Of The Devil," and "The Music Never Stopped," carving out righteous grooves on a one-of-kind "Scarlet>Fire" and a tremendous "Truckin'." I'm not selling on ebay and I don't want them re-issuing stuff. I'd rather have my Dead Collection worth 4 - 5 x more because it's a collectors item. Space, I honestly think the lack of 80s in Dave's Picks is aimed directly at you. Way too much thought going into it. If there's a buck to made they'll do it. They haven't done it with FW '69, so they clearly don't see the value on their end, either up front or in terms of losing business by reneging on the one time only slogan. Nothing against Rhino, but it's a business first, and they're going to do what makes the most money long term. 10K units of Fillmore West probably doesn't pay for the Christmas party and hookers, so why screw up your relationship with a fanbase that has loyally returned time and again to get their collectible numbered Dave's Picks or box set? (not to mention the Christmas party and hookers). They're not going to alienate the majority to satisfy a few. It would be here if there were dollars in it, but they're pencil pushers ain't seeing it, and they've seen well clear to a 33% increase in Dave's Picks production since year 1. It is what it is. Thanks for the reminder of "Get Shown The Light" and the E'72 steamer trunk. Those were also advertised as limited affairs that became available as "music only" editions, only after demand exceeded expected sales. One could just as easily make the argument on behalf of the original purchasers of the 7,200 steamer trunks and 15,000 GSTL packages and how changing the goalposts affected the monetary secondhand value of those (for people who worry about making a buck.....not to say that necessity can dictate what one sells, in the case of needing to pay for emergency circumstances). Same with the Dave's Picks series. You advertise something by flashing dates from 30 years of music, you either stick with that original plan, or change it. They changed plans on so many releases, that they might as well do it with the 900 pound gorilla in the room that is FW'69. Sure, many people are kind enough to make copies for those of us who missed out. It's a cool gesture and much appreciated, but the agreement has always been that if reprinted, a purchase would be made so the band and those working for them would benefit. For me, it's always about supporting the cause within my capacity to do so. The best bet in any cirmustance regarding the "limited edition" model is to either always stick with the plan on everything, or change the plans on everything. To stick with plans on some, but not others is in my opinion a disservice to the customer base....regardless of ones favorite era or how much monetary value one thinks they might get out of the back end.

I Don't Think They Will Rock The Boat

I also don't think FW Complete will be re-released. Do I want it to be re-released? No. I paid $450 for mine because I've been told by Rhino it will never be released again. If they start re-releasing stuff that they sold us on as limited edition, everyone who has paid high prices on the secondary market is going to lose faith in Rhino and stop buying. Or at least a good chunk. I would. If you sell something as a collectible, then it's a collectible. Do I care about market value? Yes, I paid $450 for mine. If I'm ever strapped for cash and need to sell it, I will be pissed if Rhino undermines my good faith purchase in a collectible. Will they do it? I'd like to hope not. I'd like to believe it's too risky for Rhino in terms of the "buy it now, buy it fast, because it's not going to be around long" marketing strategy. The music itself is plenty available to anyone who wants it, as pointed out by others. There's absolutely no argument that they're preventing people from hearing these great shows by not re-releasing it. If you want it, pony up. And enjoy the fact that your Dave's Picks are going to be worth something down the road beyond their musical value (like baseball cards). I think they treaded a dubious line with Get Shown The Light when they announced a music only edition 4 days after selling out the numbered edition. That was some planned shenanigans

The Dead are hot now with their recent 50th anniversary and ongoing Dead & Co touring. Free the FW69 reels! Spread the love to the young ones. Perhaps their greatest and trippiest tour ever. Could care less about marketvalue or whatever BS the hoarders are pushing... When I buy a box, I rip the CDs and the box goes in my closet. (Why not give the boxes away--because I give the music to anyone who asks me or might be interested.) Wonder how many of these FW69 "limited edition" boxes are sitting gathering dust somewhere right now. Damn shame, IMHO. Maybe Cosmic Charlie can post the tunes u know where if you're listening.... Someone please save a copy for the Deadhead retirement home we'll all be tripping at in a few years as well. Good tunes for the pillow and herbs room.

More bs on '69

I just can't help thinking it's about getting in on the release than having the music. I mean you don't know someone who has it or a copy? Over the years I've make a couple for friends. As for the morality of copying this there is a difference between the pirating of an ongoing release say the 50th of Captain Trips and copying a limited release's music. The difference of course is the producers artists etc. will not be losing a dime since if their honest no more will ne made. So the vehemence about reissue is not missing out on the music but missing out on the cool collectable. Hell maybe 50 posts ago someone offered to help out anyone who wanted the misic

I thought they were hilarious too.. I was half tempted to see them just to experience the absurd oddity of it all. ...then there is Little Ozzy, sort of like honey..., I shrunk the Rock Star or what happens if you mix brown acid or PCP with Ozzfest. Again.. Dave.. we're begging you. Package something up and make a video. One of the laryngitis shows, Boreal Ridge 85.. just make the announcement, and quick!

March 28, 1969http://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/03-28-1969 Modesto Junior College Student Center Modesto, California This is another show from Spring of 1969 where the Dead deliver every single night. And this show from Modesto Junior College is as good as any of them. The tape cuts into a raging Schoolgirl, which Pig struts through in full-on bad-ass form. After Pig gives a quick “thank you” at the end, the band completely switches gears, rolling out a fantastic Dark Star. It is marvelous from the start, but the last half - as Jerry drives forward with crystalline runs - is sure to raise goosebumps. Problem-laden, but still so good, versions of Stephen and The Eleven follow before a haunting, perfectly rendered Death Don’t Have No Mercy comes forth. Then, Pig asserts control once again, driving a balling Lovelight, which Jerry and the drummers make sublime. The second set is a bit short, made up entirely of an Other One suite that is fairly standard fare - meaning downright incredible - for 1969. I used to hear this song many years ago as a young boy and I didn't know the tile until decades later when David Lemieux and crew selected the 3/28/72 Academy of Music in New York show to be Dick's Picks 30 in 2003. Thanks BCE'd, for adding some context to that historical ditty. The amazing thing is.. with what little they played of that song and without vocals, it's amazing anyone figured out what song it was. I had never heard of it. One of the things that I really like about the Grateful Dead is the respect they pay to traditional and roots music. Influences include Harry Smith's Anthology of American Music, Cannon Jug Stompers, Obray Ramsey, John and Allan Lomax, Bonnie Dobson, Dixie Cups, Rev. Gary Davis, Woodie Guthrie and the like.. just to name a few. The songs themselves are every bit as important as the skill in which they are played. Obscure and interesting. Thanks for giving us something to talk about.. a big step up from farm animals.

Local Music

A huge thanks to Thin for provoking me enough to get my ass out last night and experience some great local music with the B3 Kings. Not to mention another in-person meetup with a local Head. Who knew we were everywhere? I mean, besides Us? It was a great time, and the music was super slinky and solid. Well worth the time and company. Just makes me wonder on a geographical Plot, where we'd all be and how surprised the results would look once we realize we're all right in our own backyards. The Spirit lives on. Sixtus

It was great to finally meet someone on the other end of this board. As Sixtus said, we connected last night to see the B3 Kings in Cambridge at the Plough and Stars - great show and great company. Not the last time, I hope. The spirit of Saunders/Garcia is alive and well with the B3 Kings! They don't do any of their material, but the same vibe. Like walking into the Keystone in Berkeley in '75 and sitting right in front - crazy.

I saw several nods to DP 30 in the comments. I just bought this on eBay. I passed on the original release and I missed the Real Gone reissue. When it first came out I passed on it because I thought it was more about the novelty of the Bo Diiddley guest appearance and some of the other seldom played tunes from the first disc. Of course I was wrong. So as this is the case, when my copy arrives in the mail, it will be the first time that I will get to hear this release. I am pretty excited about it. Since I do have DaP 14, and I have the elusive Rockin the Rhein bonus disc, I have a way better context and appreciation for this run of shows. Well, I think I am understating that as I have more of a minor an obsession. I have been able to locate the DaP 14 bonus disc for a reasonable price (should have subscribed) so I may snag that to get more from this run. I know 1972 is well represented in the release category but I hope that they get around to releasing another complete show from this run some time in the future.

Academy of Music Run

I go back and forth on this run.. Perhaps it's fair to say it's a prefix to E72. It has it's moments.. 3/23 is first class, the Caution>Jam>UJB from 3/22 is very nice, there's some Pedal Steel, a nice Smokestack, a couple really nice Other Ones.. I really enjoy listening to these shows but both sets don't congeal into the monumental full show experiences like they did across the pond. A lot of the songs really developed on that tour too (thinking Playing In the Band, China>Riders and the song structure and inventiveness in the second sets). Still two big thumbs up, but perhaps overshadowed by the earthquakes (and stellar recordings) that followed. I hope that's fair to say.. still, I am curious how they will sound with a fresh listen. It's been a while. What a momentous year. Edit: Yea.. spring is in the air.. I always liked that lawn mower.

My problem with these releases is the sound quality. To my ear they have a hard dry edge to them. It's not extreme, just enough to keep them on the shelf more than other 72 releases. And let's face it, 1972 is a very competitive year when it comes to official releases.

Yeah, for me it is the sound quality that is the problem. If the recordings had the same sound as E72, they should have been included in the E72 box, I think. The jamming is really of the same caliber to my ears. The E72 tour really started in the USA!

AOM 1972

Agree with all of the AOM comments. Feels like a warm up set of shows. Doesn't congeal. Audio not quite as good as other '72. Yet I have a friend who absolutely swears by it. AOM this, AOM that. They should have released the whole run as a box, etc. I don't get the appeal, considering everything else available from 1972, but I'm intrigued by my friend's preference toward this run, so I keep trying it. For me, I like the RTR bonus CD and parts of DP 30 and DaP 14, but for the most part, it stays on the shelf. The lone Dark Star is one of my favorites. Strange they only did onevin seven days, considering they played it every other night in Europe. Are You Lonely and the Bo Didley songs are nice. Pair of nice Wharf Rats on DaP 14.
