The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

They've never really done a complete seasonal run for a box. May '77 wasn't complete, Europe was a tour, not "spring," and so forth. So the two seasonals possible in the '70s commercial sweet spot are Summer '73 (yay!) and Dave has said that a "fall '72" box is inevitable "at some point." I don't think Summer '76 would sell like '72 or '73 and they keep to that 1972-78 sweet spot for sales. They've really played out '77 and '78 within the past 2-3 years, presumably because there were many tapes in the returned cache from those two years. Thus, it was easy to put out a couple killer late '70s boxes and not dent the stash of rarer stuff. Admittedly, once they do a Summer '73 box -- defined by June-Labor Day -- that's a chunk of the chronology they cannot revisit. But it would give them a chance to lump an iconic show(s) -- Watkins Glen (great soundcheck, not stellar noon performance next day) -- with the hotter shows in June and late July/early August. 'Course, there'll be some screamin' in certain quarters, but I'll just put on the headphones and turn it up............

Take some blood pressure meds.At least the 3 hour time difference allows you to drink a lot and still feel ok tomorrow at work. Of course, there are still 2 periods to go. Skull trip, my comments weren’t directed at you. Just making the point that GD was not a one-man show.

Of course the JGB isn't GD. I may have missed something in the thread, but I don't think anyone is making that argument. Two entirely different entities that share one key component. The Grateful Dead without Jerry is like a Rum Cake minus the rum. Still a great tasting cake, but one essential ingredient is noticeably missing. "Essential" being the operative word. No one is disputing the importance of the other band members. At least I'm not. But minus that one key ingredient, what you're left with is -- well, see my cake analogy above. And the only way the JGB would be indistinguishable from the GD is if Bobby, Phil, Mickey, Bill, Donna Jean, Keith, Brent, etc. comprised the band. And then, of course, they'd be the Grateful Dead and not the Jerry Garcia Band. So again, in my opinion, Jerry's contribution wasn't just unmistakeable. It was essential, whether he ever intended it to be or not. But totally agree -- what's the hold up on that Summer '76 Box Set announcement?

The question "why repeat 7/7/89 at MUATM?" reminded me of a shower thought from the weekend.DL2 had mentioned that they have a number of projects in process, one "unlike anything we've done before". This year's MUATM is a repeat and is accompanied by a box announcement. I hereby guess that the box announcement will be of a box containing all the MUATM shows both on CD and video. Actually that would make more sense if the repeated "movie" wasn't one that is available as an A/V release already...I begin to doubt myself... Jerry was certainly the center of The GD, but The GD was a web of people making a "sum greater than the parts". Bobby is my preferred singer/performer of the members, but I have not found myself willing to even try listening to a night of Jerry-less GD music from any of the post-GD configurations. Glad the boys are keepin' on and that they and the fans are enjoying it, but that ain't for me.

I had a similar experience with the the early post-Jerry iterations, though I actually did go to a lot of the shows. BUT i just was NOT feeling it. Phil & Friends had it's moments, as did Ratdog, but didn't;t ring the bell. Even Warren Haynes couldn't blow life into it - he wasn't the fit I thought he'd be. Then Further came along in 2009 - Kadlecik blew my mind, but then he was labeled a "Jerry ripoff" by Kreutzman and suddenly he was gone. I still catch him religiously when he rolls through Boston - the guy oozes that Jerry tone and vibe. Fare Thee Well was half-baked (woulda been great on their 20th+ show), but D&C has just the right formula and is getting better EVERY show. And Johnny Mayer helps pull in the wife/Gen Y crowd. It sure ain't the Dead, but man these guys cook. Can't wait to catch more of these shows from the couch.

What’s your dislike of FTW?Did you attend? Hate Trey? I stopped seeing Phish in 1998, haven’t paid them any attention since. But I thought Trey was great at FTW (even if a little more practice was needed), and he showed it again with Bob and Phil. Saw Furthur 2x in 2011, totally seemed like a GD cover band. But I still had fun. Have seen D&C 11/2015, 6/2017, and 11/2017. Had a great time every time, and they keep getting better. Definitely better live than live streamed. Can’t make it this summer but will try next tour. But D&C has never given me the feeling I had at FTW. But that in turn was a minuscule approximation of the feeling I got at GD.

Can't wait to hear these 2 shows for the price of one. Thank god I subscribed to get the bonus disk to get most of the 12/14/71 show. I wonder what was left out from that 12/14 show and if they just don't have the rest of the songs in their archive or decided to leave some songs off because it can't fit on 2 CDs? Either way Keith and Pigpen both in the mix is a great thing.

I'll bet the Bonus Disc / Covers "rule" does not apply when the song is in "public domain" (public domain means the artist and / or their legal entity has been dead / dissolved for x number of years). Maybe Good Lovin' and Smokestack Lightning are public domain tunes.

And sounds like they'll be doing something that they've never done before.... I wonder if that could be a collection of early GD show fragments w/ Pig....

Appeared to be available as I logged in, but now says unavailable. Subscribed, so am all set. Too early for Vol. 27 predictions? They may have to up the number for 2019 and make it an even 20,000. Glad to see the returns aren't quite yet diminishing. For those who missed out, I'm sure plenty of people have bought multiple subscriptions and the ala carte maximum number, so these will be popping up on Ebay, which I'm sure already have. Now onto watching the Seaside Chat....which I see now is actually from the basement.

Interesting video. It sounds like Dave is working on 3 things, in addition to Dave's Picks. Wow! 3 things! I'm going to guess that a mono version of Anthem of the Sun with a white cover on 200 gram vinyl is one of them. My second guess for Dave's thing is a Europe '90 box set. And #3, the thing they've never done anything like it before? It has to be a box of every note played on The Quick and The Dead tour. That is, all the Dead and all the QMS. Oh man....I can't wait!

12-14-71 what's missing here is... after Loser in the first set is Jack Straw, not there, after Next Time you See Me should be a Tennessee Jed, not there, then after Run Run Rudolph should be Black Peter, Playin in the Band and Casey Jones which ends the first set, not there. The second set is all chopped up. We don't get the opening Ramble on Rose or the Mexicali, starts off second set with Big Boss Man, then the entire jam from the second set is missing, Cryptical, Drums, TOO>me and my unkle jam>TOO, Wharf Rat and Sugar Magnolia, all missing. It does have the ending of the second set You Win Again,NFA>GDTRFB>NFA all included. So What's on that bonus disc? Not listed here. let's hope we get the Jack Straw and Tennessee Jed and the big jam from the second set. Gonna take some work to get this disc back in order. Russian Troll? Fake News? Really? Ever try calling in an order? It really is that difficult so not fake news and as far as trolls, Russian or otherwise, right. Fastest sell out to date? Could be a record. Glad I got a copy of this one.

You were obviously targeted for special call center treatment, all in good hell fun. Tell it to the fake President, he'll be all ears. I assume you'll be calling him too, speak English-only when you get his very limited attention. Primary a la carte availabity is pretty sketchy now, wow, but it's alive via secondary sources. This release might struggle to hold $40 on eBay at times in months ahead. Be patient.

Interesting tidbit of info in the video. It can be surmised that the bonus disc will mostly consist of... Tennessee Jed Black Peter Playin' Casey Jones Ramble On rose Mexicali Cryptical Drums Other One MAMU Jam Other One Wharf Rat Sugar Magnolia In the video, Dave says one song is excluded, but the big jam is complete and uninterupted, so it would appears that either Tennessee jed, Black Peter or Casey Jones will be left off. Either no "cocaine", "shackles, ball and chain" or "Sweet Susan" for you....until whenever they decide to officially release the other Ann Arbor show. I can't imagine that one NOT being released at some point, whether as a Dave's Pick or other project. I would consider 12/15/71 an essential show from that year. If you haven't heard it, check it out... https://archive.org/details/gd1971-12-15.sbd.miller.97718.sbeok.flac16 edit - I agree with the following comment, in regards to the Dave's Picks series. The cost of being a consumer of the later era's is considerally higher than the bulk of these smaller one full show releases.

I'm not trying to start a rumor here, but why break up the 2 sets so dramatically? I know Dave likes to keep the jam segment intact, but wasn't there an easier way? Perhaps we will get a surprise on disc 2? Maybe......Dark Star from Ann Arbor? Here's hoping.
