“This is one of the most thrilling albums the Grateful Dead ever produced, mixing portions of live recordings from the first six months of Mickey's tenure with the band, along with studio experimentations that would hint at where the Dead would go when they started recording to 16-track tape the following year. The 1971 remix, produced in order to make the album more accessible to the newer fans who were brought on board with WORKINGMAN'S DEAD and AMERICAN BEAUTY, has been the most commonly heard version for the past 45+ years. However, having this side-by-side with the original 1968 mix demonstrates countless differences, with the original mix being more primal, psychedelic, and experimental. Add to this the first extant live recording featuring Mickey as a member of the Grateful Dead, and you have a very special release in every way.” - David Lemieux

We're continuing our 50th anniversary reissue series with ANTHEM OF THE SUN: 50th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION, due July 13th. Released 50 years after its anniversary date, this two-disc deluxe version features a double dose of the original album - one fully remastered from the original 1968 mix and the other remastered from the more well-known 1971 mix - as well as a bonus disc of a previously unreleased complete live show recorded on October 22, 1967 at Winterland in San Francisco, CA. Newly remastered by Jeffrey Norman, this is the first known recording of the Grateful Dead with Mickey Hart, who joined the band in September 1967. The first run will come with a special lenticular of the cover.

I've been unhappy about the lack of 60s shows released in the last few years. The early 70s glut is nice, pleasant, and well-played, but just a bit too mellow for someone who prefers the fire of their first 5 years. Every year, I resubscribe to Dave's Picks out of fear that another 60s show (like Thelma) will come out with a subscribers-only bonus disc, only to be disappointed for at least 2 years straight now. I mean, isn't that the decade in which they became famous and did their most adventurous work? I even went out on a limb financially to spring for the 30 Trips box, knowing I'd only get about 4 shows from that great decade, and it was nice that one of them is essentially Side 2 of Anthem without the overdubs. Their feedback era had such a spirit of fun and abandon, doing nutty things (like feedback and kazoos) they would probably find dated and passe' within just a couple of years, but the humorous Prankster mentality prevailed. Having a full show from 1967 just sweetens this package all the more! It looks like a tail end of their 67 set list with the beginnings of the Anthem trail-blazing! Truly a momentous transition. Endless thanks, guys!

    White Anthem Cover
At Peaches Records in Atlanta around 1976, I ran across a new LP of Anthem that had the white background on the cover, which is how the original cover painting looks, according to an interview with Jerry Garcia. Stupidly, I didn't buy it, since I already had the album. I still shake my head at my lack of sense in letting it go by. I guess I assumed that would be the new standard cover art, that the inaccurate blue background had finally been corrected. On the other hand, I am overjoyed that Phil's 1971 remix is finally going to be on CD. I had been hoping and praying for that, as the anniversary approaches. The irony about all this is that the remix is being touted as "the one everyone is familiar with," which is only true in the vinyl world. Since it came out on CD just a little over a decade after the LP remix version, using the original 1968 mix for the CD, the 68 mix was at first the novelty of the CD, and interesting to hear, but it's now been the standard version on CD for over 3 decades. I'll bet more fans are used to the original mix after all these years. I've always preferred Phil's remix, and I am overjoyed that we can have it on CD. I like the acoustic guitar on That's It For The Other One instead of just the organ, I like the closer-up drums that kick off the live portions, and I like the full ending on Born Cross-Eyed instead of the fadeout. The bonus track of Cross-Eyed on the Rhino reissue a few years ago added a much different final ending, much longer with more feedback, so I'm glad to have it done "right." This is a joyful occasion indeed!

I'd listened before to Mars Hotel, Blues for Allah, Europe 72. But for me that during a long time only listened to official albums, the holy grail, or trinity, were AOTS, Aoxomoxoa and Live Dead. Later Workingman's, and American Beauty. But those three records had the best representation of the most innovative music by this band.

    Aoxomoxoa original mix
The funny thing about my experience whith this recording (Aoxomoxoa) is that the first copy that I had it was an American vynil that a older brother bought to me while he was studying in New York in the early eighties. It was the remixed version. A few years after, in a local record store sale, I saw a cassete tape of Aoxomoxoa that named the band "The Greatful Dead', it turned to be the original mix, it was way different. And that was in the mid to late eighties.I suppose, that Warner Europe released a tape using a copy of an old original vynil or something like that. Lately, I have bought the vinyl collection box, and I have to say that the original Aoxomoxoa recording is way different to the remixed version. Tbe original AOS isn't that different. Now, how much copies of these recordings I bought? I don't know for sure...

being released. Hope they do the same with Aoxomoxoa. If you get the 50th Anniversary + the Golden Road versions of the 1st album, you also have the original release (50th) plus the restored tracks to their original length (Golden Road). With the 50th releases of Anthem and Aoxomoxoa, hopefully both versions will be there. Kudos. Very nice cherry with some very rare 1967 stuff. Only the 2nd full show from that year, and the other is on the 30 Trips.

I did things the opposite way round-more by necessity than choice. I collected all their studio and officially released albums first, and it was about 12 years later that I got into collecting tapes. Of the officially released albums, Anthem was the first to really turn me on, and I still think its great. Coming from a background of listening to British and German prog/heavy/psych bands, Anthem seemed more accessible. As opposed to more conventional sounding albums, like Working Mans Dead, for example, which sounded more like trad American music. It all worked out in the end.

I am interested in comparing the 2 versions of AOTS, but am even more excited about the 10/22/67 release as the great sounding Charlie Miller treated recordings on archive have the Lovelight cut.... THE REAL QUESTION IS: DOES THE DEAD HAVE THE ORIGINAL MASTERS OF THIS SHOW IN THE VAULT?, AND IF SO .... DO THEY HAVE THE ENTIRE LOVELIGHT? If they don't have the full lovelight, then I can just keep listening to CM's treated recording. I have a midnight blue vinyl copy (I always thought it was purple) of AOTS and now I will have a reason to re-listen to it and check for 'RE' in the dead wax. I also have an old CD version. If it turns out that I have both mixes already, then the question of the Lovelight cut and the Jeff Norman treatment of 10/22/67 will be the reason to buy this for me. I don't listen to the studio stuff anymore, so this will be a good excuse to go back and relisten to this one. The best thing about this release is that I am finally going to get clarity on the 2 different mixes. Thanks DEAD.NET!

Anthem of the Sun, an assortment of some of the most psychedelic pieces in the Grateful Dead canon. For me, That's It For The Other One is particularly moving, Bobby's portion of the suite an ode to the Merry Pranksters, those loveable miscreants (sic) so near and dear to me. The historic aspect of this 50th anniversary edition is the Winterland 10/22/67 show featuring new second drummer Mickey Hart. Yet another Grateful day to be relived. Love to the Family...P.S. I knew the Winterland Arena 10/22/67 show sounded familiar, it was a Marijuana Defense Benefit performance with other bands such as Quicksilver Messenger Service. A great deal more history than meets the eye, an harmonic convergence of sorts, though tripping mad as it was. Cheers...

Its simply a matter of bit rate and sampling rate as both are PCM(pulse code modulation). 24/192 will allow for more information to be contained within the file(or this case the download). The theory is that the bigger file will contain more information and bring you closure to the actual recording recording. You will also need something that can decode a file with 24/192 as not everything can. The notes indicate that they went back to the original mix (1968 and 1971) which is great news. However the bigger question is what bit and sample rate was the original mix remastered. IE. makes little sense to buy a file remastered to 16/44 and then upsampled to 24/192 and charge more. Without getting into the why and how, you may or may not hear an audible different between the files(especially if the 24/192 file is upsampled). The Apple lossless file is for the most part lossless but does actually compress the file in a minor way. By the way 16/44 is commonly know as rebook CD quality. Probably more than what you were looking for but this is a passion of mine.

DaveS Good point! I guess I was looking at this like most other "bonus disc" offerings(by dead.net) in that the Amazons of the world don't usually get them. Then there is the space limit on CD which also threw me off. I guess these mixes are small enough to fit on one CD. interesting choices they made.

Yes, the blurb is wrong. The original mix has been on CD all these years. The 1971 mix has not been on CD (as far as I know) apart from a couple of the songs on last year's "Smiling on a Cloudy Day" CD. - The 1971 mix was available on vinyl and cassette previously. It is the original mix of "AoxomoxoA" that has not been on CD yet. And I sure hope that comes out next year, because that original mix is awesome!

All CD releases up to this point have been the 1971 remix. The Rhino vinyl issued several years back is the original mix. This release will be the first time the original mix has been on CD. Both versions are short enough to fit on one CD. Second disc is the live show.

I am lucky enough to have both the 1968 and the 1971 mixes on vinyl. The 1971 mix had the same design on the cover, but had a white, instead of a blue background. Both mixes are great, having different things to recommend them. They are quite different from each other. I only have 1971 mix of Aoxomoxoa, although one of my old friends taped the original mix on to a cassette years ago. It was so scratched, though, that I couldn't listen to it, and its long since gone. But I remember this much-it was very different, and very much better than the 1971 mix. Whats Become of the Baby was one track that sounded great-a lot more detail on it. But the whole album, in its original mix is very much better, to my ears.

I got both the Anthem of the sun & Aoxomoxoa remixes when they first came out in '71 (or maybe early '72). The way to tell them apart from the originals was to look at where the number is pressed into the vinyl between the run-out groove and the label. The remixes have RE there after the number. As for the Anthem cover, mine is purple the same as the original, not white. Mine came from the US. Maybe Daverock got a UK release or his was a later version. Anyone know more about purple vs. white?

I prefer the 2nd mix of this one...some of the stuff from the original mix is cool and What's Become of the Baby is definitely more interesting but most of the songs it feels like too much is going on. Thanks folks for clearing up the mix confusion with Anthem. I first bought Anthem on CD in the 90's, so I guess I've been listening to original mix mostly. I have the reissue on vinyl and I guess that's the new mix...I noticed that it sounded a little different but I originally thought it was just because it was the vinyl version...guess, I'll have to go back an re-listen.

I got this much later. The date on the label is 1981. On the back of the cover, it says "Made and Distributed in Italy by WEA Italiano S.P.A Milano". Another difference in design is that the photograph on the back, in the circle, is in colour. I've got it here now, and I must say, it feels a lot thinner than the recent Dead releases I have bought on vinyl.

Here's some information regarding the white album cover from Discogs: Palm Tree Label with Warner/Reprise paper sleeve Seven Arts On back cover This remix was released around 1975-77 with a white cover instead of the purple one. Some copies of this release have pressed into the vinyl "WS-1-1749 LW2" on side 1 and "WS-2-1749 LW-1" on side 2 Some copies say "remixed" on rear lower left corner That's it from Discogs. Reminder - if you have Deadbase 50, there's an extensive discography. Anthem of the Sun details start on page 269 and carries on to page 271. It's been released many, many times. Including reel-to-reel. There are tons of details here, but briefly it looks like the re-mix was released in late '71-early '72 with a purple cover, and then re-released in '75 with a white cover. There are too many details regarding variants and CDs to list here. This information is probably all listed somewhere on line.

Psyche Sam, I have purchased every limited release disc/ boxed set Dead.net has ever produced going back to Dicks 1 in 1993. Do the math on all of those releases. You'll be hard pressed so find someone who has supported Dead.net more than I have over the past 25 years. But now I'm a troll, cheap ass, and less of a dead head because I want to pay less for the exact same product elsewhere? I think it makes me a smart consumer. The band is getting a unit sale, so it ain't hurting them. Win/win. I tend to think love of the music makes one a dead head. It sucks to always see deadier than thou dudes like you putting people down and trying to be the arbitrator of what qualifies as a real dead head. I guess that's just the internet for ya. All of that said, I'm looking forward to the 67 show! It's unfortunate I'll be buying my 3rd copy of Anthem to get my hands on it.

Simon/DaveThe remixed anthem was supposed to be released in 71 with the white cover, like you Simon, mine was virtualy indistinguishable from the original, Simon has cleared up how to tell the two versions apart. Before the remix was released, Zig Zag magazine had trailed that the cover would be white. So Daves Italian pressing seems to finally confirm Zig Zags prophecy! And I always liked the thick original mix of Aoxomoxoa best.

Probably one of the better official albums by the GD. If not the best. The two mixes (I think, that I have the two, but it's right), and a complete concert of the period (the first known whith Mickey, no less). I wonder if the live recording with Aoxomoxoa will be a 68 concert. All well. But caution, before summer they will be offering us a incredible 1970 box set. Where all my money has gone? That said, I've been waiting for this release a long time. - :)
