Yes it was my understanding that the original mix was used (with one exception) for all CD versions whereas for the following album it has always been the remix that was used.

Anthem of the Sun, an assortment of some of the most psychedelic pieces in the Grateful Dead canon. For me, That's It For The Other One is particularly moving, Bobby's portion of the suite an ode to the Merry Pranksters, those loveable miscreants (sic) so near and dear to me. The historic aspect of this 50th anniversary edition is the Winterland 10/22/67 show featuring new second drummer Mickey Hart. Yet another Grateful day to be relived. Love to the Family...P.S. I knew the Winterland Arena 10/22/67 show sounded familiar, it was a Marijuana Defense Benefit performance with other bands such as Quicksilver Messenger Service. A great deal more history than meets the eye, an harmonic convergence of sorts, though tripping mad as it was. Cheers...

Does anyone know why FLAC is so much more expensive than Apple Lossless? Since they're both lossless, don't they sound the same?

1. Why no CD option? Only downloads?

Apple vs Flac file
Its simply a matter of bit rate and sampling rate as both are PCM(pulse code modulation).
24/192 will allow for more information to be contained within the file(or this case the download). The theory is that the bigger file will contain more information and bring you closure to the actual recording recording. You will also need something that can decode a file with 24/192 as not everything can.
The notes indicate that they went back to the original mix (1968 and 1971) which is great news. However the bigger question is what bit and sample rate was the original mix remastered. IE. makes little sense to buy a file remastered to 16/44 and then upsampled to 24/192 and charge more.
Without getting into the why and how, you may or may not hear an audible different between the files(especially if the 24/192 file is upsampled). The Apple lossless file is for the most part lossless but does actually compress the file in a minor way. By the way 16/44 is commonly know as rebook CD quality.
Probably more than what you were looking for but this is a passion of mine.
Bonus disc
Looks like the wording is a bit confusing on the description but it does say "as well as a bonus disc of a previously unreleased complete live show recorded on October 22, 1967 at Winterland in San Francisco, CA".

It might be confusing to folks also to have both the '68 & '71 masters on 1 disc - I initially thought it was a 3 disc set also (each master on it's own disc).

I guess I was looking at this like most other "bonus disc" offerings(by dead.net) in that the Amazons of the world don't usually get them. Then there is the space limit on CD which also threw me off. I guess these mixes are small enough to fit on one CD.

1968 vs. 1971 mix
Yes, the blurb is wrong. The original mix has been on CD all these years. The 1971 mix has not been on CD (as far as I know) apart from a couple of the songs on last year's "Smiling on a Cloudy Day" CD. - The 1971 mix was available on vinyl and cassette previously.
It is the original mix of "AoxomoxoA" that has not been on CD yet. And I sure hope that comes out next year, because that original mix is awesome!

All CD releases up to this point have been the 1971 remix.
The Rhino vinyl issued several years back is the original mix.
This release will be the first time the original mix has been on CD.
Both versions are short enough to fit on one CD.

1968 and 1971 mix
I am lucky enough to have both the 1968 and the 1971 mixes on vinyl. The 1971 mix had the same design on the cover, but had a white, instead of a blue background. Both mixes are great, having different things to recommend them. They are quite different from each other.
I only have 1971 mix of Aoxomoxoa, although one of my old friends taped the original mix on to a cassette years ago. It was so scratched, though, that I couldn't listen to it, and its long since gone. But I remember this much-it was very different, and very much better than the 1971 mix. Whats Become of the Baby was one track that sounded great-a lot more detail on it. But the whole album, in its original mix is very much better, to my ears.

1971 remixes
I got both the Anthem of the sun & Aoxomoxoa remixes when they first came out in '71 (or maybe early '72). The way to tell them apart from the originals was to look at where the number is pressed into the vinyl between the run-out groove and the label. The remixes have RE there after the number. As for the Anthem cover, mine is purple the same as the original, not white. Mine came from the US. Maybe Daverock got a UK release or his was a later version. Anyone know more about purple vs. white?
Original mix vs remix
I believe the original mix is what was on most CDs, whereas the remix was on the Hi-Res versions ?Presumably these new versions will have been upgraded a little more.
Stoked for the '67 show. .... I have the CM version already, but looking forward to this.

I prefer the 2nd mix of this one...some of the stuff from the original mix is cool and What's Become of the Baby is definitely more interesting but most of the songs it feels like too much is going on.
Thanks folks for clearing up the mix confusion with Anthem. I first bought Anthem on CD in the 90's, so I guess I've been listening to original mix mostly. I have the reissue on vinyl and I guess that's the new mix...I noticed that it sounded a little different but I originally thought it was just because it was the vinyl version...guess, I'll have to go back an re-listen.
1971 Anthem-Simon
I got this much later. The date on the label is 1981. On the back of the cover, it says "Made and Distributed in Italy by WEA Italiano S.P.A Milano".
Another difference in design is that the photograph on the back, in the circle, is in colour.
I've got it here now, and I must say, it feels a lot thinner than the recent Dead releases I have bought on vinyl.

That's it from Discogs. Reminder - if you have Deadbase 50, there's an extensive discography. Anthem of the Sun details start on page 269 and carries on to page 271. It's been released many, many times. Including reel-to-reel. There are tons of details here, but briefly it looks like the re-mix was released in late '71-early '72 with a purple cover, and then re-released in '75 with a white cover. There are too many details regarding variants and CDs to list here. This information is probably all listed somewhere on line.

Psyche Sam, I have purchased every limited release disc/ boxed set Dead.net has ever produced going back to Dicks 1 in 1993. Do the math on all of those releases. You'll be hard pressed so find someone who has supported Dead.net more than I have over the past 25 years.
But now I'm a troll, cheap ass, and less of a dead head because I want to pay less for the exact same product elsewhere? I think it makes me a smart consumer. The band is getting a unit sale, so it ain't hurting them. Win/win.
I tend to think love of the music makes one a dead head. It sucks to always see deadier than thou dudes like you putting people down and trying to be the arbitrator of what qualifies as a real dead head. I guess that's just the internet for ya.
All of that said, I'm looking forward to the 67 show! It's unfortunate I'll be buying my 3rd copy of Anthem to get my hands on it.
White cover
Simon/DaveThe remixed anthem was supposed to be released in 71 with the white cover, like you Simon, mine was virtualy indistinguishable from the original, Simon has cleared up how to tell the two versions apart. Before the remix was released, Zig Zag magazine had trailed that the cover would be white.
So Daves Italian pressing seems to finally confirm Zig Zags prophecy!
And I always liked the thick original mix of Aoxomoxoa best.

I remember seeing copies of Anthem with the white album cover in the early '70s when I was growing up in the midwest.

Probably one of the better official albums by the GD. If not the best. The two mixes (I think, that I have the two, but it's right), and a complete concert of the period (the first known whith Mickey, no less). I wonder if the live recording with Aoxomoxoa will be a 68 concert. All well.
But caution, before summer they will be offering us a incredible 1970 box set.
