The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

...Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead 1987 Tour...The Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead 1987 Tour was a concert tour by Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead taking place in the summer of 1987 and consisting of six concerts. Each concert began with one or two lengthy sets by the Grateful Dead of their own material (sometime broken into a first and second set, per the Dead's usual practice), followed by a roughly 90 minute set of the Dead acting as Dylan's backup band. :) ...bring on the complete recordings boxset ! ;)

I should say also, that both the last two 77 shows I have listened to have gone to places I wasn't expecting. The Uncle Johns I mentioned, on the 11th, and also Not Fade Away and Comes a Time on 12th. The playing, after the song parts have been completed is mesmeric on both tracks. I also found myself listening to, and enjoying, Keith's playing more than I was expecting. And now I see that Cornell is being re-released on vinyl. Incidentally, 8th May 1911 was the date Robert Johnson was born.

I know what you guys mean. 1969 is wild and wooly whereas 1977 is the awesome power of a fully operational mothership. But the dead were never smooth and professional. Case in point: I listened to 5/7/77 last night. Between the first 4 or 5 songs there is the sound of hammers repeatedly hammering nails into the drum platform. And you know the breaks between songs were much longer than on the releases. The Stones are smooth and professional. Can you picture carpenters building a drum stage during a Stones concert? But that's part of the charm of the Dead and is much preferable to a pre-planned scripted concert and is why we seek out every show.

LMG, spring 87....went to the Hampton through Rectum shows, actually had tix for the Wuuuster shows, but we sold em because we were burnt and honestly we were starting to get a bit disenfranchised with the scene (already beyond that nice peak I was trying to describe before...) and as you start to get older, sometimes your priorities shift. Unfortunately don’t recall many specifics from this tour.....it all rolls into one, and melts into a dream.... I do remeber thinking there was something missing musically? It was awesome that Jerry was back and looked good, and man that TOG the second night was powerful, but it was like he was out of sync or something. In fact, we occasionally noticed this phenomenon ever after the 86 coma. Luckily, as time went on, it was less often and more subtle. So our perception was that everything had kinda turned into white bread. This feeling actually progressed during summer tour, to the point that, combined with the venues chosen, led us to completely skip the fall tour! Blasphemy I know. Luckily that 3-27-88 show snapped us outta that funk a bit, and by summer 88 we were back on the bus. See this is kinda what I’ve been trying to get at with my recent posts, PERCEPTION! All the shows we get are precious, but they all contain something that someone could point out is flawed. Jerry’s voice, Brent, Donna etc etc., So although we all have favorites, we should not fall in ruts, or overgeneralize, or whatever to the point where people just don’t listen to whole eras of shows! I don’t care what year, there is always at least some hot shows, so why close your mind off and not even give these a chance? Remember, sometimes you get shone the light etc.. Here’s a funny example. For a long time (years ago), I wasn’t that into the 72 stuff. I was missinformed and not musically mature enough to get the big psychedelic jams and so forth. So I thought hell im not going to pay for more E72 cause hell I already have E72! Also, the few tapes we got back then from 72 were not usually very good (same with 73 and 74). Mostly fed 76-78s as a wee lad.... So I copped a misinformed attitude and didn’t check it out for a long time. Eventually after studying Jazz and improv and deveping my ears so to speak, I finally got it. So much so that I now can informatively argue that the E72 improve Dark Stars etc are some of the BEST music the band ever made and why! Bob speaks of post 75 about “we had songs we wanted to get out there” and the jams took too much time etc....well my argument is yes the songs ARE great, but a lot of bands have great songs.... But NOBODY! has ever played that kind of far out improv jazz like music (in rock) like the Dead. Yeah, yeah I love fusion and the rest, but it’s not the same. The ability to completely let it dismantle, but somehow stay together and interesting. Nobody else could do that, that I’ve ever heard so far... No offense, but most of the “Jam” bands and music since is often nothing more than individuals ceaselessly noodling. Yes there is a difference, number one being group improve versus individual.... That’s the main reason 77 is not my favorite. (I love it, but it’s not my favorite!) IMHO, 76-78 often just drones on in modes, with one person soloing over the top, where say E72 and 69 etc there is much more group improv going down...Again, we’re talking degrees here, not black or white! So my point of all this, and the last couple days is, if you overgenralize and cant overlook certain flaws or variables or what not, it is truly a shame, because we’re so blessed to have access to SO much amazing unique music! Even mid-nineties late era shows always have something. Sure there may not be a lot of hot entire “shows”, but there always are at least moments, and for this old duffer those moments are still worth the time and effort to try and someday check as much of the music from ALL eras as possible!!! Ok, thanks for letting me get this out, it’s been festering for awhile and why i started to post again after many years. It just bums me out to no end when I see folks here being nasty and judgmental based on closed mindedness. Remeber, be GRATEFUL!!! Ok, Smithers, release the hounds....I can already here it, “yeah but....”

That same song also has the line: "I'd rather drink muddy water, sleep in a hollow log, than being here in Atlanta treated like a dirty dog" which the Dead used in early renditions of I Know You Rider, changing Atlanta to Frisco.

The Dark Star from Dick's Picks 36 contains mind left body, and I think there may be a couple of other Dark Stars that contain it as well (10/25/73 is ringing a bell). so should this one. That will be tonight's project. May the never be separated again.

Does anybody else notice the massive amount of low-end / bass on this Buffalo box set recording? It makes me wonder if Jeff Norman also did some bass enhancement on this show. I can't turn the equalizer down low enough to make it bearable on my car stereo system.

I was thinking of May 1977 shows when I made that comment. And the fact that I had been listening to the Shrine 1967 show, Fillmore West 1969 and the Binghamton and Fillmore East 1970 shows immediately prior to dropping in on May 1977. 1967-1970 sounds a lot rougher round the edges than the May 77 shows-11th and 12th are the ones I played. I like them- the Uncle Johns on the 11th with Jerry's solo at the end are top draw-but the shows generally seem a bit gentler somehow than the earlier ones. Bob used to joke on stage in 1977 about getting things just exactly perfect.. Maybe the medium should also be taken into account-some of the 67-70 shows I listened to were on vinyl whereas the 77 shows I have got are all on cd. That also applies to seeing them live. It can't help affect your perceptions of the music if you actually went on tour with them. To me,1985 is purely represented on disc. I never saw them in 1985. In fact, there was so little information about them in England round about that time, that I assumed they must have split up!

Dave, Glad you revisited those shows. They have always been among my favorites. I've said before that I consider disk 4 to be one of the greatest single CDs the band has ever released. The ending of 2/18/71 was on Siris radio this week. Don't dismiss those Cap shows too quickly.

I have been meaning to ask for some time, VGuy.. First.. when Cumberland comes up it usually shakes you out of your slumber.. I recall you commenting that it was Cumberland Blues that pulled you into the orbit and got you on the bus. Do you recall which one? Re: GFar.. I was wondering who borrowed the riding mower and parked it haphazardly on my tulip bed.

Nice to see you on board. Once you subscribe, you'll never go back. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on the crucially important philosophical dilemmas we grapple with here such as: 1) What will the next box set be? 1a) Why is it from that year instead of this other year that I was hoping for? 2) What will the next Dave's Pick be? 2b) Why wasn't it that other show from that same tour? 3) WTF is Bolo's last post all about? 4) What about Gainesville? If anyone is looking for a "palate cleanser" today -- check out WWOZ out of N'Awlins. They're playing live sets from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival all day long. I want to be there soooo badly right now. Mrs. Deadguy is out shopping for some andouille sausage as I write this. Still don't have 26 yet. But I do have every single April 71 show now thanks to Doc. So I guess that'll tide me over.

I am extremely impressed with this one lady. I am certain she may be the only fan that actually saw every Grateful Dead show. That is impressive. Now I haven't checked every show, but the few I have checked across years, she is there. Congrats! My lady. Maybe some one here actually knows her, her name is dubai-escorts-bunnies. I know it has been discussed some before. But I am shocked to see so much video coming out. I need to spend more time checking youtube for video. I have no idea how much, maybe someone here can enlighten me, wish voodoonola was one of our posters. Not sure how much of E72 was filmed, but I would be interested in buying some official video. If they filmed all of it, what a great investment in themselves and their progeny. I doubt they filmed it all because of the same budgetary constraints related to Sunshine Daydream. If memory serves, it was the same crew on E72 that filmed sunshine daydream, like E72 was a test hit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn8XBEGt6-w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5jn58DZ6Fw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOTWLpSUBM8

I have always loved the Cumberland Blues on this set-everything about it is picture perfect. I am not sure which show it is from, but I think its the 28th. Jack-2/18/71 is my favourite of those Portchester shows-and maybe I will give it another listen after I've finished the April shows. I would also agree that the 4th cd in this set features some of the best playing of their life.

Yeah, with combining tracks from officially released shows there are sound differences and other anamolies. For example 10/19/74 the bulk of tracks come from The GD Movie soundtrack, with some from Steal Your Face. Those two releases sound different. Also the Eyes on the movie soundtrack is edited so that one of the jams is taken out but then it does segue way into China Doll. However the full Eyes is on Disc 3 from the So Many Roads box. For things like that it boils down each person's preference I would think. For me, I want the full Eyes as I think that version is outstanding so I have that in my playlist. The downside is that it breaks in the playlist before China Doll. Obvoiusly the way to avoid all of this is just go and get a nice SBD of the whole show. Still I find this piecing shows together project as fun. Kind of like an Deadead Indiana Jones...minus all of danger of course.

Gary I agree with you Voodoonola is awesome. He/she has uploaded so many videos it blows my mind. Along with Charlie Miller, Voodonola are two people I bow to in gratitude for their contributions to the GD community. Of course I can't forget the tapers and the filmers. I can't believe how much was recorded. So many sources of shows out there for all us to enjoy. However it is especially cool to me when there is video.

Rogue - you forgot 1 topic for Hippychic: last 5 listens which Simonrob contributed to earlier. I'm always interested in what others listen to. Hippychic - welcome aboard The Board! Daverock - try re-sequencing Ladies & Gentlemen (or for that matter DP7 / Go To Nassau or any comps.); I did so and wound up with 2 more (completely fictious) shows. Granted they never happened but it's fun to make up a complete set list. If you want a 1st set big jam you can do it since it's your show. I couldn't listen to DP7 for years due to the sequencing but rearranged the songs to better reflect a Dead show. It's in regular rotation now.

I was going through trying to order these shows correctly, and it appears that Ramble On Rose is the only song out of order for 11/17/71. The setlists I've found online show it as being the encore, but it's stuck between Saturday Night and Sugar Mags at the end of set 1. Either way, it would be on Disc 2, so I can't figure out why it was switched. Also, unless I'm incorrect, Ramble On Rose is the only song missing from 12/14/71. There's something spooky going on here with that song.....just like Frankenstein. Anyway... I gave number 11258 (and bonus disc) a first listen last night and really enjoyed both shows. It's pretty interesting hearing the contrast with/without Pigpen on very similar setlists a month apart. Looking forward to listening to this pair more closely in the coming days and hearing the Ann Arbor show in the proper order.

That’s Grate because tracking says expected delivery 5/1. Hope they’re not toying with me.Still a few hours before the postal worker arrives. In the meantime, Dark Side of the Moon on 180g vinyl. Last 5 4-26-72 The Kinks - One for the Road, used vinyl ZZ Top - El Loco, used vinyl Moody Blues - In Search of the Lost Chord,, used vinyl ZZ Top - Fandango, used vinyl. Took a dive into used vinyl, overall they sound mediocre. I washed them with an official record cleaning solution but that barely helped, so I used dish soap and water and that got them cleaner but they still have a lot of pops and crackles. El Loco also has scratches you can’t see but the needle still gets stuck. They also feel quite flimsy compared to 180g vinyl. Don’t think I’ll waste any more money on used vinyl. Out for delivery today also is Rush - Exit Stage Left, 200g vinyl Who - Leeds, don’t know the mass of vinyl used for this one. Oh, Side 1 just finished, time to flip the record. “Money, get away.....” Think I’ll spin Animals next.

I like that idea about re-sequencing shows. Ladies and Gentlemen.. always sounds a bit like two first sets, followed by two second sets. And after all, Live Dead was recorded from different shows to create a seamless flow of music. And it works perfectly. My last 5 listens have been; Ladies and Gentlemen...The Grateful Dead April 1971 Face To Face-mono cd The Kinks Rubber Soul-mono cd The Beatles KSAN San Francisco 4/30/70 blu ray Pink Floyd Live in Plymouth 5/11/71 King Crimson Stuck in the past? I just finished an uninterrupted listen of 11/17. It kicks some serious ass. The two words that come to mind are Instant Classic. In just one afternoon it has risen to one of the best shows of the series in my mind and I haven't began to dissect or give it multiple listens. The recording is simply amazing and the performance is a powerhouse. Rex.. if you're up there listening, many thanks. VGuy.. the Cumberland sizzles and The Other One is other worldly. What a great show and what a great release. Thanks to all.

And we're going to spin it Sunday afternoon in the woodsy foothills outside Golden, Colo., with the finest a garden here can produce and a few well-chilled ales. I hope forensicdoc is happy with these pics -- the discs are packed to the gills with 75-79 minutes of music each. Naturally we'll start with the Ann Arbor show, due to Pigpen's return. Shameless plug: the subscription really is a great idea, particularly when Dave heads back to '71. Still rooting for Summer '73 box later this year........

Right. I am still slack jawed from the first listen. This is WowWow stuff.. I went with a crew and did 10 miles on the local river listening to it on good headphones through a waterproof system.. I kept paddling away from my friends because I wanted it cranked and didn't want to have to talk to anyone. Play it loud. It simply wowed me.. perhaps I was just in a good mood or something but they seemed truly inspired, everyone was on time and in tune and they came to play. The sound is exactly perfect. This blows the hell out of what currently circulates.

I bought this, back in the 1970s, but foolishly sold it some years later. I can remember it had all sorts of cool inserts.Another high energy album I sold at the same time was "Kick Out The Jams" by the MC5. Another blistering, high energy album. In fact its probably the closet a contemporaneous American band got to channelling the kind of energy that The Who did. The songs may not be as good- but it kicks ass.

Step away from the vinyl... out of the rabbit hole into the sunlight. Seriously great audio/recording here for almost fifty years old, excellent mix, clarity and balance. You will hear everyone clean and clear. Even sibilants are silky smooth, not always the case in older recordings. Listening on thirty year old Klipsch, horns, sounds absolutely wonderful. Biding time music yesterday was disc three of GD movie soundtrack, a sweet wonderful jam into DS into Dew on 10/18/74. Now back on the shelf to be almost forgotten with DaP 26 arrived... and am only on the first disc. Thanks bunches to DL and the folks that make this happen, we have another winner. Cumberland so fine... Jerry says, don't applaud until you've had some. More, please.

My DaP 26 has been delivered but I won't be back home to pick it up for almost a month. In the meantime, super happy that, for once, it seems that it is almost all (or maybe all) POSITIVE FEEDBACK!! I do enjoy all posts even some of those that are critical of some performances, etc., but I do have to say I find more negativity than I sometimes would like to see - whether's its 80s bashing, Brent bashing, too many 70s shows released bashing or whatever. I don't really always understand it - given that I always assume that anyone who posts here actually loves the band and its music. 23 years on from 1995, we should be more Grateful that the releases keep coming IMHO. Also be Grateful that the band seems to pick up more fans over time, and that will help keep releases coming. Also, also be Grateful that there is lots of Vault left to mine!! Very very pleased to read so many positive reviews for once. I do think the band was flying on all cylinders in Oct-Dec 71 - Keith was playing awesome, as was Billy, as were Bob and Jerry. Also Phil kicks it on background vocals and is typically very clear in the mix. Can't wait to hear Dap26 when I get back!!

No news from Doc. That can only mean one thing. There's burning, looting and deadly shooting in the sunshine state.. and somebody's got to stick around to clean up the mess and make sense of it all. I did get a rare PM from him after this was announced.. something to the effect that he has always had a high opinion of this show and considering the reported sonic upgrade, that he was stoked. So it came pre-approved by the good doctor. I'd be surprised if we don't hear from him during his next 5 am pint of surely high octane coffee.

They REALLY open the valve right up in Set Two, don't they? Start to finish a great show unto itself. Even if this was just a two disc set of 11/17/71 it would have been worth the $30. This was my first year subscribing, never skipping out on that again. Best investment I have made in years. As soon as we are done with the final rotation of Disc 2 for the final time today...I think...I think I can move on to Disc 3. Then maybe 4. Maybe. DaP26 in the top 5 DaP releases overall, for sure.

Thanks so much for this! I remember an interview where he said he did a solo show and hated it so much that he flipped on the tour promoter and the next night John Kahn was up onstage with him. He sounds so great here that it's hard to believe he could have disliked it that much. I'm not sure I've ever heard a version I like better. Thanks again.

Mine didn't come with a bonus disk, is it in the CD case? Is it coming separate? I'm subscribed.

Thanks for the thanks! I was afraid no one bothered to check it out with the -understandable- excitement over Albuquerque!
