The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

For my tastes a pair of nice floorstanding speakers in a 2 channel stereo set up is it. I have a headphone aversion due to highly irresponsible Walkman use - I'd get really high before catching the school bus, or on it depending on who was around, and crank my Walkman up to ear damaging volumes for the lengthy ride to high school. Foolish youth.

The best part of waiting on delivery of new releases is all the time I can spend reading the personal attacks, and overall whinging and whining about everything under the sun on these boards.

Playlist Influences

There are definitely musical choices better left for when the wife is out of the house. Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd in particular seem to put my wife in a negative frame of mind. With the dead, it's all about the dose - if I don't play too much of it when she's around, then when I do play it she digs it, if I run it she lets me know she's heard enough.

....nah. I'm not talking about anyone here, but a cool hardcore punk band from D.C. Check 'em out if you can handle them. I only listen to them in the car, because Mrs. Vguy yells at me when I play them at home. I love running errands.

No worries, not trying to further stir the pot, but the first part of your post, the part referencing the guy's relationship with his family and insinuating some sort of abusive upbringing just seemed beyond the pale. The second part of your post seemed OK, but maybe follow some of your own advice. Being rude or cruel to someone you disagree with or that you feel is being obnoxious can be immensely gratifying in the short term, no doubt, but making references to another person's family members or a persons relationship with their family really seems to go to far except in extreme cases, like right before you punch someone in the face.

Compassion for snafu

So you do believe kids should be allowed to bully other kids verbally. Oh man, so sad. Were you a disappointment to your parents? Is that what's eating at you? You must have been. Or at least that's the message you felt by their actions. Were they drinkers? Either that or perfectionists who never let a mistake go without making you feel belittled. Let me ask you, how old were you when you first remember them putting you down? Always, right? Your earliest memories are filled with shame. I do feel compassion for you. You were bullied mercilessly, there can be no doubt. There's an underlying hopelessness in your words and anger. I think there's no question you were verbally abused before you even had the capacity to respond. That's so f***ing sad I'm getting choked up here. You can get past this snafu, I promise you. Life doesn't have to be full of anger so old you don't recall where it came from. You can be happy snafu, but I'll warn you, you have to stop looking for it externally. There is no solution to your free speech crusade. I say this because there will always be factions in the world in our lifetime who have the will to suppress it. In other words, your anger will never go away by chasing down free speech violations. You have to recognize that your happiness starts with acknowledging that your anger stems from your personal experience of speech suppression in childhood. From there you're almost home free. You just need to let go of your crusade for a time, and start loving some people. Not necessarily close friends or family, I mean treat people with respect and dignity. Drop the anger and profanity from your affect, and stop responding to the people who stoke your anger. Instead, find people whose words you find agreeable, and compliment them. Say good things to them. I'm telling you, if you drop the anger and the bullying, and the profanity, and replace it with kindness, you WILL start to feel better about yourself. THEN, you can address free speech issues in the world. But you can't do it now, because you will never connect with people as you are now. You can only connect with them about free speech when you come from a place of peace. Right now you don't actually put a coherent point down on paper. You're like David Lee Roth's angry twin. You know how he just rambles in half coherent thoughts? That's what you sound like. Peace.

Yessssss....got my order in first with no troubles, finally the pre-order Gods have smiled on me! Luckily without having to go through PayPal, I've also managed to secure myself some time saving up after the charges drop-off. Very excited to see these getting the treatment. Wondering why the crucial 72' Seattle and Portland shows are not in this. Those 3 years(72', 73', 74') tell such a story and are the most coveted recordings in general. I am however very grateful...

Wow is right

Love love love this. We got our Summer '73 box! Summer dead always makes me smile, and 2 summers worth is a real treat. And the option of multi year boxes opens up the possibility of a multi year MSG, or Boston, Berkeley, Alpine, Shoreline,(enter any city here) boxes. Dizzying.... the possibilities.

I'm always excited when a new release will be a great improvement over what I have. This looks like it will be that. I ordered both cd and vinyl. (don't tell the wife) On the ordering front,,, maybe it was so easy because it seemed to be on the downlow. I didn't (or at least haven't gotten one yet) an email announcement. Maybe they thought less splash would help "fans" get theirs before "ebayers". So, in the next 3 months, a new 45, Aoxomoxoa, DaP 27 and a box set! Wow, that large sucking sound is coming from your wallet!

$53.99 for shipping to Europe. It may be an oversize item, but for that sort of shipping price I would expect it to be delivered by private jet, not standard shipping. However, this is a not-to-be-missed item for sure.

Totally worth the wait...

So... I'd been patiently waiting for the box set announcement, and this DID NOT DISAPPOINT! These shows are all really good. The Vancouver show from 6/22/73 (my 3rd Birthday, I might add) is absolutely top-notch. To me, it's in the same conversation w/ Veneta, Cornell, Englishtown, Bickershaw and acoustic/electric shows at the Fillmore East. I cannot wait for this gem to show up on my porch! Peace, brothers and sisters. 10 days until Alpine Valley!

Looks like an awesome box & it was easy to pull the trigger since I won a couple of hundred bucks on Justify in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Great horse & great timing for a great box set. Honestly, I would have bought the box anyway, but having that extra cash made it much easier
