    The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

    For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

    PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

    Spearmint Rhino. The steakhouse in the Fremont casino. The free nudie-cards the freaks hand out on the strip. Collect enough, make a deck. Winning $1,000 on a Wheel-Of-Fortune slot at the Excalibur, and another $500 at the Golden Nugget. The wave pool at Mandalay Bay, and the sand in your toes. Driving through Hoover Dam re-construction, coked out of our very minds and holding an ounce; having the elderly cop on duty at the checkpoint shine his flashlight in our faces and saying, "have a GREAT time, gentlemen!" as I got the hell out of there knowing an angel was on my shoulder. This was like 4am in a rented white Malibu from Denver. Rick said as long as we had a white car (and were driving across Utah, a virtual rolling felony), they'd never nab us. He was right. Taking the chopper ride at night bombing down over the strip and knowing I never wanted to be in a helicopter ever since Stevie Ray and Bill Graham crashed and burned, but doing it anyway. Getting dumped off from a limo at the Bellagio on New Year's Eve, and going in with my boy Bruce dressed up like Hunter S. Thompson, white Chuck Taylors, hawaiian shirt, cigarette holder. All that shit. Flask in hand, hash smoke bellowing out like Cheech and Chong. Go Raiders. \m/

    I would have looked up the good Mr. VGuy, but it was a core nuclear family thing (celebrating twins' 21st birthdays). Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon are magnificent, people. if and when you go to LV again, drive your car or rent one, and go to these two places, and then drive through the Nevada desert. c'est magnifique. Did you know it gets hot in LV? 106 degrees, it was. seeing the GD on 6/25/94 was 116 degrees. the show sucked donkeys. the next night was one of the top three of 94, but I had to return to Seattle, and didn't attend. (aww...)

    Great post, agree with 98% HST; was one of the greatest American writers of the late 20th century! (IMHO that’s being extremely conservative) Can’t believe I lived so close and never got to meet him....bummer.

    Hunter S. Thompson was an American treasure, like Hemingway. Yes they were rough around the edges and extremely politically incorrect. As if that's a problem. I just finished the Joel Selvin book. I believe I was the first to speak of it here. I wasn't in any great hurry to rush through it and it was boring. I've devoured most of the rock biographies out there and this one had precious little dirt. Selvin took the high road. He did seemingly have an axe to grind against the Leshes, but whatever. After what Phil has been through, I try to overlook some of the micromanaging. The best part of the book would be the play-by-play of Fare Thee Well. Having attended the shows, I more or less agreed. My axe to grind is Trey. He brought too little too late, energy, phrasing, pacing - all of it. The lead guitar chair was offered to him and he was mostly a shrinking violet. I've seen him wail like a man possessed with Phish - only a few times, they're not one of my bands but I had to experience it to form an educated opinion. I think he was just a little intimidated, under-rehearsed and not wanting to step on toes. Who would want to receive the obligatory tongue-lashing from Jill Lesh? No one, it would seem. Which will lead to my brief John Mayer sell. This guy doesn't have any issues with going out and playing Jerry Garcia in the band. He sings and plays and wails his ass off every night, uninhibited, confident, inspired. John Mayer has righted his career and cemented his legacy as no longer a goofball joke pop star, but a real musician, generous, talented, and keeping this ship afloat. Can't wait for the Boulder end-of-tour shows. Oh, and Water World was a blast. \m/

    ....the scenery can't be beat. And buffets. Some are outstanding, some not so much. Do some research. If you're gonna gamble. Some great craps odds if you know where to look.

Only reason I bought it was for the 1967-10-22 show. I've already got a really good soundboard of it but I'm listening with nice headphones right now & it's definetly worth it. Sounds fantastic.Get some... a little further in now...massive upgrade. Thanks :o)

I can't believe someone objected to Hippychic's posts. Getting off the subject of the Grateful Dead, a blast from my past: Lothar And The Hand People. I never really got to see them many years ago at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton, Pennsylvania, but I definitely do remember the name. I used to have their 1st Capitol Records LP, I guess -the one with pictures of the band members photos on the front cover on a tan background. I thought the their facial expressions in these photos were hilarious, and ages ago I bought the album with that being one of the reasons for buying it. Another reason to buy it was to "explore" new music and it was quite low-cost price for the time. My first comment here, after lurking for a few months, ha! I personally would love to see 6-4-76 Paramount Theater, Portland, OR. Great setlist, historic show, and does not circulate in SBD. That said, a mini box of both 6-3 and 6-4 might be warranted, so perhaps they'll hold off (provided 6-4 is even in the vault). Just sayin'. Hey everybody!

No not the guitar company or the mental thing... the Miles Davis album. Miles Davis, E.S.P. Man, is this beautiful music. The last two songs, "Iris, and Mood" are just hypnotic. I was at the Dead & Co. shows in Boulder the last two nights. I was with some buddies Friday and had a great time though I felt the pace dragged a little. So, taking the wife last night, I kept hyping it - that Friday maybe wasn't the most stellar show and being end of tour, last night would kill it. It lagged even more than Friday. When Bob took the band into a languid, "Days Between" right out of a long-ass drums/space, I think half the stadium fell asleep. Still love the band, but, that was exactly the moment to go into "Me And My Uncle, or Truckin'," something to put a little juice in the proceedings. As usual the sound was immaculate; pristine. That band has the cleanest, purest live sound mix I have ever heard and they get it outside. Amazing. Shakedown street there at Folsom Field is a beautiful scene. You can get great food, cool swag and there are several full bars. The cops just hang out behind their sunglasses with their arms folded and watch the girls. A great weekend. Happy Sunday everyone.

I thought the Boulder shows looked pretty good on paper. But, I wasn’t there and I didn’t do the stream. I did catch the free stream of Set 1 opening China/Rider and thought it was great. Agree with LedDed that D&C has spectacular concert sound. So does Roger Waters. Worst concert sound I experienced: Van Halen 2007. Horrendous. It was indoors, but I have also seen Roger Waters 3x and D&C 2x at the same place and they sounded great. For RW in 2012 I was one row in front of the same seat I was in for VH 2007, and it sounded great, so can’t blame the arena for the bad VH sound. Saw VH outdoors in 2015 and it sounded way better, but not even close to how D&C sounds outdoors.

You are right. Only the last two songs of the bonus disc were previously unreleased. Been hoping for a full 7/5/81 release for a while now. Great ‘81 show but also a hometown one for me. Enjoy the CD!

Agreed-a superb album-Herbie Hancocks piano and Tony Williams drumming-exceptional. All those mid 60s Miles Davis album are great-but E.S.P might just be my favourite.I only got into Bitches Brew this year. There is a 3 cd 1 dvd anniversary edition of this out, that doesn't cost so much, and sounds brilliant. Much, much better than earlier editions-to my way of thinking.

Vguy - Love ya, but I disagree that the '81 TTATS was met with "fire and brimstone". No one dissed the show itself (as I recall). The general consensus was that it was one of the weaker recordings in the box - merely a statement of fact. '81 is one of the worst-recorded of the Dead's 30 years, so it was to be expected, no? "Fire and brimstone" seems a bit dramatic, but perhaps I'm forgetting some of the comments.

Figured I would spend my Monday morning looking for news on 27th Dave. While waiting I streamed that Dicky Elizabeth Reed video. Wow, that hit the spot. I always thought volume swells could only be done on a Strat. What a glorious intro by Dicky. Thanks for posting

Thin-I was thinking nitecat was referring only to the last two tracks on the bonus disc from the Amazon-exclusive version. You are correct, there are several unreleased tracks throughout the 3-disc version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Strange_Trip Happy DaP 27 announcement day, everybody!

Nice - Glad they found a good show and good recording form the 80's. Help Slip Franklin's is one of my favorites, and is one of the songs that no one has enough of. Glad to hear Eyes is NOT one of the super-speedy versions that was the norm in the 80's. BRING IT!
