Get August off to a good start...

AGAIN....... For the first time EVER (since 1977) I'm disappointed with a GD release. I won't be attending this years MUATM for 2 very specific reasons. 1) I was at this show I see no need to "relive" it. 2) it's from 1989. I was hoping for either 8/4/76 or 11/24/78 but alas it wasn't meant to be. Wasn't this show already released on DVD as part of Crimson White & Indigo? What's going on?

If a show from 1989 why not either 10/8 or 10/9?

OK, most will agree '89 was a good touring year. But now 5 of the 8 MUATM to-date from the same month/year?? I expect a little more variety from a band that played well over 2000 shows over 30 years...

Didn't they do this one already, a few years ago?I distinctly remember seeing that crumbly old Philly stadium on the big screen, and remembering it was the last show there, before they tore it down...

Like RI Tom, this seems like a very strange choice. And disappointing because it's nothing new. July 7 JFK is a great show, and will be fun in the theaters, but it's already out. Summer 1989 is great stuff, probably the best run of the later day Grateful Dead through Spring 1990, but still there were other shows to choose from. As big as last year was as far as new releases, it's been kind of a down year this year. The re-issue of the LP's is entirely predictable. Hopefully a boxed set from a great time frame still is still going to happen this year.

People are acting like they've got multiple camera footage of as many shows as audio recordings. Needless to say, they don't. There are no multiple camera reels of Hampton; what you've seen on youtube is individual fan handycam footage, etc. '89 summer tour was actually rare in that every show was video recorded, Alpine as well as stadium shows, most tours weren't, even summer tours. Think some in '90 were, like RFK, but not the whole tour. Unfortunately this series is going to be pretty limited. The Buffalo July 4th was released on DVD but not at Meet up at the movies. Don't be surprised if that's the one next year. I'm STILL waiting on Giants '89! My first shows.

Speaking of classic multiple camera footage shows, though: is the video footage still intact in some form from all five nights at Winterland in October '74? The movie is cool and all, but I was under the impression that ALL FIVE of those nights, 16th-20th, were on multiple camera footage, and any one of them would be really cool to see uninterrupted in theaters nowadays. But I don't know if they're still intact or if they were edited and diced to make the movie and the rest was just dumped somewhere, whatever... Footage from 70s Dead (and early 80s dead) in complete show form seems pretty rare, considering the number of shows. It's doubtful there is anything as high quality as that 70 minute set from Germany in '72 or as awesome overall as Oregon '72. Better learn to love '89-'95 if you want to go to MUAM forever and ever every year till you die!

I acknowledge what you're saying is totally the case, but would rather see something new to us, e.g. the blurry, wobbly Duke 78 footage perhaps synced with crystal clear audio, than a show that's already been out for a long time on DVD.

First of all - I look forward to attending these events. Great opportunity to watch a great show and meet new GD friends in Wisconsin. Looking at the eight events, 2 from '72, 1 from '74, and 5 from '89. Like others - I agree we need to have some variety. Many of us have the DVD's that were released and '89 doesn't provide the WOW factor it once did. I would suggest that you follow up Dave's picks releases and have MUATM represent one of those years or actual concerts that were released. I need to feel the "WOW". Vince

How many of the 8 Radio City, 15? Warfield shows in 1980 were filmed from beginning to end? The Dead Ahead video release is some from Hallowen, some from other nights I think. One of them in complete show form would be a great MUAM.

This is a good show but come on, let's show some imagination and pick something unusual and different. we all have the sbd of this show (or the crimson white and indigo DVD). I like these meet ups, but this was a lame choice.

there are a lot of folks coming along from the Dead & Company side for whom all this is shiny and new. Also, I admit it, I'm fond of Brent.

Mary's comment is the best explanation there is for why they are playing Crimson White and Indigo instead of something we haven't seen. But they could still have played something we haven't seen before and shown something shiny and new for all of us. And I'll admit it too...I thought Brent was far and away their best full time keyboard player throughout his career. Keith was brilliant early, but fizzled out later.

what i'd like to see is any of the MUAM at a theater with a kick-ass sound system turned up loud....last 2 i went to the volume was way too low and lousy sound...maybe there could be some ratings of which theaters are known to play it loud

I haven't come here for a while but had to when I got the ad for this year's MUAM. I wondered if I was the only one to notice that they'll be showing something that we all have on DVD already. Apparently, I was NOT the only one to notice. One poster talked about the limited video options available. Are there further details on that? As I understand it, these videos are simply the images projected on the overhead screens during the show. Once that idea took off, hardly a show happened where the cameras weren't in use. If only for the benefit of review to improve camera technique, it would be reasonable to think that a tape deck was running while the cameras were in operation. If that is the case, there must be a great number of these shows gathering dust somewhere. Obviously, most of them would be from the '90s, but I don't think we'll be too judgmental after all these years with NO Jerry and NO Grateful Dead. Plus, if you put a 1990s Dead performance up against just about anything that's popular right now, I suspect the boys would be the clear victors. So, is the statement about there being severely limited video based on knowledge or are you, like me, guessing? We're not going to change the minds of those in charge, but I am very curious about the quantity of archival video. Thanks! -MJ

Beth and i have an issue that we hope can be worked out Before August 1st! The problem is we live in a little town of 2500 folks with one theater in town called The Ball theater here in Pageland South Carolina. The last two years we had to drive up to Charlotte only to be turned away for overcrowding or sold out events which completely bummed us and realized there wasn't enough theaters running this gem of an opportunity to see Y'all on the big screen without paying ticket prices of today!!! You guys know i work with GOD for the life on this planet with no pay, that's why Bill Graham got me on the trash crew because that's something i did anyhow for my favorite Band and planet around, it was the only way i could experience GODS house Band and we are so grateful for that experience... Lord like no other in this life... to go to church, the gym, the Dance, the Love, everything in a song played perfectly. All of our time goes to our Mother Lucille who has Dementia and we need to get out and have some fun too, we have a great babysitter for her when we go shopping once a month for food and stuff, all we need now is for Meet up at the movies to play close by that doesn't cost more than we can handle! Know that we Love You, that's never gonna change and Thanks for all that you are. Love to ALL, Stuartps... if Ball Theater can't provide, we are 16 miles south of Monroe NC and they have multiplex theaters just like the big cities Lol!!! We Love every One of YOU

I have to say, never seen or heard this show. My bad. Looking forward to MUAM, but someone on the thread mention sound. It is a bummer sound seems always to be low at venues. Had the wife speak to the manager at last movie house...lol...a bit louder. A compilation of various filmed shows would be nice. Peace out....

My suggestion for the next one - So Far outtakes. We know there is tons of footage. The boys were gearing up for 20th anniversary and working out Cryptical, Keep On Growing, Comes a Time, and many others. Some great stuff hidden in the vaults - put out some '85 video! Please! p.s. would have made a great 33 1/3 release on quality vinyl. 33 1/3 years after it was played!

I think i'm gonna show and hope they remastered the sound... plangent maybe!?!! i just checked out a little or R,W, & I.. and sound quality isn't the greatest so maybe they do have something special planned for us??? d:)

I was at JFK for this show, and I have to say [IMO] the single most stand out moment of this show was when Brent sang Blow Away! That alone is worth the price of admission! I remember it was close to 100 degrees that day, and the sun set behind JFK during Brent's performance. The "cool breeze" he sings about was really there ... and it came just in time. 50k+ Deadheads were about to melt! Brent sang his heart out that day! I think I remember a cool Scarlet> Fire too! Not complaining but ... I remember how exciting it was for Meet Up At The Movies when Sunshine Daydream (at that time, previously unreleased), or the Europe '72 (unreleased) show premiered. Surely there must be some more rare unreleased footage for such a special event?! Grateful nevertheless! Happy Birthday Jerry ... see ya at the movies!

You really think the Dead & Company fans are a target audience? I'm pretty sure it's us. The old folks. There are a few new people and, of course, we want to welcome them, but I really doubt that it's a significant group. I've been to (I think) five of these showings and the people I've seen who show up are in my age range. And not a whole lot of those.

Now that I think about what I just wrote.....actually WE are primarily the D&C audience, too! I've only been to one of their shows thus far, but I didn't see too many people who reminded me of me 40 years ago.

Is there a definitive statement ANYWHERE about any remastering done in prep for this year's showing. Scattered references to restoration but no details anywhere?

I see dead.net is (wisely) restocking this set in advance of this Meet Up, hoping people will buy it after seeing the show on the big screen. I've coveted this set for a few years--once upon a time it seemed to be everywhere, and then it suddenly vanished and went out of print, going for triple what it once cost new--so I'm gonna grab one. But does anyone know if it's a dead.net exclusive? I usually stock my amazon wishlist with stuff in advance of my birthday, as my mother in law can usually be counted on to buy me a few things from there. The PNW box wiped out my biannual Dead budget in one fell swoop, so I'm feeling a tad frugal at the moment.

What makes me think a box set may be in the long-term plan of archive releases?

They already released this as a DVD and 3 CD set in 2010.

Can't hear Phil at all for the 2nd year in a row here in Stroudsburg, PA. Sucks

Decent show musically. Especially considering it reached 91 degrees that day and the band seemed like they were sweltering.As far as the theatrical production, I found it to be flawed in many ways. I read somewhere that is was remastered but in hindsight, I believe just the promotional video trailer was remastered, not the film. Phil's bass is very low in the mix, at times barely there at all. As a professional videographer, I couldn't help but notice the first set was fairly well shot and edited, however, the second set was full of missed shots, blurry focus, and horrible editing. As if some of their cameras weren't in operation during second set because they had no long shots or additional footage to go to when their A camera didn't have a shot....so we're left watching drum kit stands, speakers and at times, just a black screen. Sound quality in our theater was good, not great, not bad. Certainly wasn't shot with the intention of becoming a theatrical release. BTW: Six days after this 1989 show, then-Mayor Wilson Goode condemned the stadium due to multiple findings by city inspectors that the structure was structurally unsafe and a potential fire hazard.
