    The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

    For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

    PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

    Replacement Discs
    With the help of Marye and Dr. Rhino, I was able to get a replacement disc for my one defective disc within 7-10 days. First I sent an email to:Drrhino@wmgcustomerservice.com AND Drrhino@rhino.com Dr. Rhino emailed me back within 36 hours stating that a replacement disc would be sent ASAP. Then, I asked marye for her help in clarifying what exactly ASAP meant. Marye was able to ask the Doctor more specifically, when I could expect my disc, and thus, marye did let me know that my replacement disc was in fact mailed out. I got the disc a day or two later.

    Grayteful, canine hearing.
    My dog doesn’t take issues with Donna screams. But, he does raise his head, perk his ears, and slowly tilt his head back and forth while he looks at the speakers during Drums/Space. As for the MIT study Kayak Guy referenced, my dog also poops, and drinks beer, and listens to GD, but that doesn’t make him human. Not MIT, but if you are in the Princeton area, looks like you can buy some high priced releases at this record store. Video posted in January, maybe sold by now. https://youtu.be/C3r37kOUDHo

    Replacement discs
    Hey Now, to all of you waiting on replacements. I was able to get replacement discs sent to me, it was not quick but not too hard to accomplish. I will tell you what I did so hopefully it may help: So my box arrived on 9/10 and I got to opening the next day on 9/11. I ended up needing 5 discs replaced. I emailed Dead.net customer service on that same day. I got a late night email response that stated something to the effect that my request would be answered within 48 hours. 48 hours passed and since it was about 72 hours in I emailed customer service again - this was on 9/14. I got a response which directed me to fill out form which was provided through a link in the email. I went to the link which was page attached to Warner Music Group - helpspot it has title WMG Customer Service. I completed the form and hit the submit button, this was on 9/15. Once that happened the page provided my with an access key number that it sated could be utilized to to get updates. The page also suggested that I should bookmark it for updates. Now this is where it gets weird. This access key number did not seem be something I could enter anywhere for updates, not on Rhino, not on Warner, not on Dead.net... The page I bookmarked only seemed useful for me to provide additional updates to my request, so to add photos of damage for example. So on 9/20, I responded to my Dead.net customer service email I received on 9/14 for an update. I provided both my order number, that access key and I explained the situation. I got response on that same day from a customer service rep name Mac, who apologized said that it would be taken care of. ON 9/26 Mac from Dead.net sent me a follow up email stating the my replacement discs were in the mail. I got them on 9/28. So first off all I want to publicly thank Mac in Dead.net customer service! Second for anyone looking to get replacement disc I am going suggest that you may have to just keep up on them like I did. I know my write up was lengthy but I wanted to illustrate what it took for me to get them. I don't think one request will work unfortunately but the good part is that I think you can get them if you keep up on customer service. When all else fails to you can always go to Jedi Master MaryE. I don't want to speak for her, but I know she helped many in the past with this kind of thing.

    ok, who do you have to notify about defective discs? Anyone got an email address? Anyone? Rhino, you got some explainin' to do. Via Con Dios Marty my friend, now you are truly betwixt two worlds. I was an avid Airplane fan long before I became a deadhead, they were the quintessential San Francisco group when I was first discovering rock and roll. I never got to see the Airplane, but I did get to see the Starship during the Dragonfly>Red Octopus time frame. Never forget Marty and Gracie's duets, they always tried to out sing each other, some times Marty was better, some times Gracie, but it was just so great to see these icons perform. We will never see or hear such music again. I predict that this box set will not sell out, maybe in a year or two, but not right away, just too many flaws, maybe that's why they wrapped it up in such a beautiful box, cause the music is good, but the recording is so-so. Most of the songs are too slow, the China Doll's are almost as slow as a funeral progression, I see why they dropped that tune from the setlists. My request for the next box, no more 70's shows unless they have some that sound great and are recorded great, which I think they are running out of, so, on to the 80's or early 90's, some Bruce and Vince would be wonderful. Matrix if you have to, just do it.

    You had me at six shows from 1973+1974 best box since 30 Trips
    I guess people forget ,what it was like to make tapes from tapes , that were tapes of tapes , Sometimes we forget how fortunate we have it , all you have to do is wait , and killer soundboards are hand picked and delivered to your house . Furthermore you have the team of artists talented beyond my EARS ,everyone doing their absolute best to deliver , the Dead’s music better than It came to them. The PNW package is so good you don’t want to open it ! When you reveal the treasure inside , again better than I hoped , every perfect note accentuated with the real flaws made as perfect as if you where standing in front of the band. They are giving us the the best of The Grateful Dead on a Silver platter. If you love the Dead as much as I This collection from the quintessential North West tours in 1973+1974 , every note with perfect ,imperfection that’s what you have to accept about this band , you have listen , and be patient, and listen , And then you will here the magic that is the Grateful Dead. Don’t be foolish if you like this era don’t miss out ,for I don’t understand why it’s not sold out , it’s worth the investment ,for the Dark Star alone . Of course! almost forgot that one. Willie Nelson also does a killer version. I guess we should give "Wabash Cannonball" an honorable mention, although I don't think its quite as great as the tunes mentioned so far. Definitely, the Dead/Jerry's "Smokestack Lightning" and "It takes a lot to Laugh.." are top shelf. I'm not sure what to make of "Click Clack" but need to give it a few more listens. Well, yeah its Beefheart, so you know....

Unbelievably powerful riff + Neil Peart's insane drumming and Geddy Lee's voice in its prime. I'd be remiss not to mention Terry Brown's mad production skills. I can't beat this for car songs Jimbo. Is anyone else wrestling the urge to listen to the Listening Party tracks? KeithFan! Stay on target....stay on target.... When this baby hits 88, we're going to see some serious shit. I am not sure about either the Dead or Jerry being granted ownership of "Smokestack Lightning" and "It Takes a Lot To Laugh". The original versions of both songs, by Wolf and Dylan are great, though.

Jim, Born X-Eyed, thanks for the feedback on this show. I have an AUD copy. The Dark Star is a 3 parter that has an Attics and Sugar Magnolia. Top shelf. They play around with the Sugar Mag riff a bit in the beginning, and it's just fantastic.

....well Phish has this little dittie called, wait for it, Train Song. "and we drank a little wine". They have another one called Get Back On The Train."When I jumped off, I had a bucket full of thoughts When I first jumped off, I held that bucket in my hand Ideas that would take me all around the world I stood and watched the smoke behind the mountain curl It took me a long time to get back on the train Now I'm gone and I'll never look back again I'm gone and I'll never look back at all You know I'll never look back again I turn my face into the howlin' wind It took me a long time to get back on the train See my face in the town that's flashing by See me standing at the station in the rain See me running there beside the car I left it all behind, again I'll travel far It took me a long time to get back on the train." Simonrob don't be ridiculous, that song is about a ferry not a train. Feeling "merry" was drug-speak for getting high on Leapers in 60s Mod London. Inside outside, leave me alone. Inside outside, nowhere is home. Inside outside, where have I been? Out feeling merry on the 5:15. Out feeling merry on the ferry... Speaking of 5/15, I've made an important discovery. Dark Star 5/15/70 at 15:15, Jerry goes divine for a few minutes. I wonder if that's still the Gibson SG he used on Live Dead. I love that guitar.

Indeed leapers was slang for amphetamines, but not a word I have ever heard used in that context, but mods (who loved amphetamines - and scooters) were a bit before my time.

Agree with daverock, this is a great vintage Stones tune. I first heard it on the “Garden State 78” double bootleg album. Another great train track from the Stones is Love in Vain, which I believe has already been mentioned.

Not metaphorical, real The title refers to the then-new A subway service that runs through New York City, going at that time from eastern Brooklyn, on the Fulton Street Line opened in 1936, up into Harlem and northern Manhattan, using the Eighth Avenue Line in Manhattan opened in 1932.

Having listened to as much MC5 (hi Zally) as I can recently, I think I should reappear to plug their excellent "Thunder Express". Its about a car, not a train. But it moves like a train.

Night Train and Crazy Train were the ones I meant as metaphorical. I probably put that sentence in the wrong spot, after the things it was referring to. Should have led with that. Tom Waits Downtown Train is really about stalking someone at a subway stop too. King of the Road is the old timey song I was trying to think of. Lots of train references.

Moving on to books, "Train Dreams" by Denis Johnson is worth reading. As is the same author's "Jesus' Son". A great writer.

It was an awful awful joke. Vguy I am not. I am, however, familiar with Pete, The Who, and protagonist Jimmy's story, and I did get quite a chuckle out of it once I'd read what I'd written. I guess that either makes me a narcissist or the funniest guy in the room. fourwinds - I will give you the Magic Bus (turned train) for the low low price of - you guessed it, 100 English pounds! But wait.... Isn't it the Magic Ferry?

Ha.. classic. I became exactly that happy the day my number quit appearing in the phone book. Now it appears only the really poor volunteer fire departments, cancer charities, disabled cops & vets (apparently without insurance) and credit card companies with much better rates than I currently have can access my phone records. Joy. Edit: A preemptive comment on disabled civil servants, hats off.. you have my support. I just don't trust telemarketers that somehow get my phone number can call me fifteen times a year. Most times very little money trickles down to the folks that need it and executives and shell companies gobble what they can first. No attempt on my part to be unkind.. I feel my $50 to archive.org each year is well spent.
