I posted this elsewhere but wanted to share with our thread too:For all you heads in the academy, and for those of us struggling to follow along, I wanted to share my excitement at a new publication: The Grateful Dead in Concert: Essays on Live Improvisation Jim Tuedio, Stan Spector, eds http://www.mcfarlandpub.com/book-2.php?id=978-0-7864-4357-4 My partner, Brent Wood, contributed an essay entitled "The Eccentric Revolutions of Phil Lesh". It is a great piece of work and feels good to see it in print after hours of conversation, listening and writing. He's already published an essay on Robert Hunter's poetry and psychedelic experience and is currently tackling the subject of Jerry & tragedy. These pieces will hopefully appear as a whole book in future. This book is carefully put together with foreword by Stanley Krippner and contributions by Meriwether, Spector, and the usual suspects as well as others. Great writing, nice organization (tuning, first, 2nd, 3rd sets, encore...) and good ideas. Reads like a show. Enjoy!

Hi Neighbour, About the camp site - great! Your jam sounds awesome - I would have loved to plug in too!!! It reminds me I really must find other Dead fans in town to Jam with. Another fun to-do! I'm playing around with Dear Mr. Fantasy and Estimated Prophet at the moment. This morning thought perhaps a little KINKS might be nice too. "You really got me" or "All day and all of the night" for a little rockin' addition to my repertoire...perhaps.... Have a good one, Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Haven't heard of them or the venue before - hope it's fun! My buddies play in a GDead cover band in Toronto - Caution Jam. http://www.cautionjam.ca Looks like their next show is on the 24th @ Grossman's, TO. Their Penetang boat cruise is, supposedly a blast. I, too, was jamming Sunday night, impromptu at my place. My neighbour Joe brought together a jam so fast that I didn't know if I was going or coming =) Bass, guitars, piano & drums, we pulled off some nice Scarlet>Fire, Playin, Sugaree, among others. I used to be in a group called Zen Again, and later a one-off as the Dreadful Great. I'm threatening to pull together another GDead project, but I'll probably just keep jamming with my various dead-crazy friends. Campsite's right next to yours, Playin', on the night before and night of the show. Looks like fun! K

Hi all, Well I was trying to track down a Canadian Grateful Dead Cover Band. A band called Rose Garland is playing at the Harball in MIlton, Ontario on April 17th. Anyone planning to go? Has anyone been to one of their shows? Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Hi K, Looking forward to playing with you too! I had a great jam yesterday afternoon in the sun at my house as my kids and some of their friends ran around the yard and house. Some days it just flows.....yesterday was one of those.....it just flowed with no effort at all. Deal, Goin' DTR, BIODTL, FriendOTD, Fire on the M, Bird Song, SugarM, Dark Star, Ripple, Box of Rain. I keep getting more excited about the show too. Listened to a Shakedown Street podcast and they played some recent FURTHER. The China Doll was so soulful....nice! Enjoy your long weekend.....our weather looks amazing!!!!!!!!!! Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Okay, so I bumped into some buddies in town and they say that they bought seats to ArtPark, so maybe there actually were seats but must have sold out right away. Didn't mean to give you false hope, Playin... I'm keen to mill around the lawn, and supposedly it's a small venue anyway, so the lawn won't be too far from stage view. It's all good as far as I'm concerned! I'll be booking a site at Four Mile Creek this weekend. Looking forward to the jam! K

Hi K and all, There are lots of campsites (looks like most still available). Hope you others will consider camping at that park too! I have picked a non-electric site. I will have my acoustic bass guitar with me and would love to play with any of you who come by or just hang out around the fire for those without instruments. Oh boy, camping, bonfires, acoustic jamming and experiencing Further and other Deadheads......well if I have to....the sacrifaces we must make.... I am hoping my wonderful wife will be able to join me. Though, she is taking a course this summer (May to July) on teaching kindergarden with the hopes this will give her a leg up on getting a job. Anyway if she can't join us I will still be there perhaps with a cousin or friend in tow. I'm so looking forward to it. When I think of it, it makes me smile. The anticipation is almost alone worth the price. :) Anyway, I hope more of you head to ArtPark. The outdoor venue looks beautiful. Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Hey there, thanks for the updates, Playin! I am super excited to hear that you're coming to ArtPark - I will find a way to meet you there. Guess what? Don't be bummed about your seats - the whole thing is general admission - at least that's how it seemed even on the first day of ticket sales. I think we will enjoy milling about freely in a beautiful venue. Camping - I originally thought it would be easy to go back across the border to stay in Ontario, but it might be fun to find a campground so we can stay and keep the party rolling. Looks like Four Mile Creek is the closest State Park, and there's a KOA Niagara. This is shaping up to be a mighty good time. Yay!!!!

I would've never made it out of there alive !!! (p.100,June 1, current events) "Stanley's" silver cup will now have a home in Boston with the "Bruins". I used to be in the Bobby Orr fan club. Thank you Boston Bruins, 3 game seven's you won, sounds like Blackjack to me, congratulations on a dream come true.

though the "Cup" may be lined with silver, it's more precious than "Gold". I'm sorry for your loss Vancouver, but hey, you beat us there in the Olympics last year, you'll get over it. Peace !

Hi all - I am newly arrived in beautiful Vancouver - long time deadhead from the Bay area - 350+ shows and wish I had a ticket for the next one...Where are we all here? Anyplace where we congregate? Man, I miss my peeps from SF but I know there are some of us here. Let's find each other and have a party. I had a great little group of heads in Melbourne (Oz) for a few years and NONE of them had even been to one show. The magik is profound. So, if you are out there - communicate! LOVE to ALL, Carol

I'm sorry but, the dates in Canada have all but, dryed up!(used to be JGB in copps coliseum or molson park!!!) as far as I'm concerned, I am a looooong time deadhead (and I followed them all over the states until 9/11 and they wouldn't let me in)and I'm just a little frustrated with the amount of canadian shows! I've heard of one in Ottawa in the last four years! I don't think that the dead are playing for money anymore ,but enjoyment! I live in Sault ste. marie.... a border city that is looking for any way to boost our economy I think it would be great if say bands like the dead,Moe or umphrees mcgee or any canadian jam, bluegrass or jazz bands that would love to play would start a canadian style bonneroo here I would love it ...the fact that my kids alone, who weren't at the last shows of garcia, could just see the good vibes and great people that are around would be awsome!!!!!I hope some of you agree with me peacealways ! and keep smiling!

I want to pose the question of whether there are any Native American/First Nations Deadheads out there? Looking on Native American message boards like Powwows.com, there are a lot of negative comments about hippies, hippy music and culture and the Dead. Speaking as a descendant of east coast Indians (Nanticoke-Lenape from Delaware/PA/MD), I am wondering if there are any other oddball Indians out there who like the Dead and any thoughts on similarities and differences between Dead culture and Native American Culture, ie pow wow trail, dancing, sprituality. I personally see a lot of common threads but would likely be torn to pieces for posting a comment like this on an Indian message board (ie "bunch of wannabe Indians with feathers and beads--idiots stealing our culture"). Assuming a more sympathetic audience on this forum.....Anyone out there doing both pow wow trail and dead shows? I'd love to hear your perspective. I wasnt' sure where to post this comment but thought Canadian Deadheads since it's a North America comment....plus, I know there are a lot of First Nations people up there that might be able to answer this. I know I've seen lots of other Indians at shows, specifically up at Canandaigua (Seneca country), so I'm hoping to hear from you. And I know Jeff Pehrson in Furthur has some NDN blood. I have a feeling there is a deeper native connection to the Dead than most folks are aware of. Obviously there was Rolling Thunder's (John Pope) involvement in the early days, but he was known for his hippy connections anyway. Your thoughts?

I claim no expertise in this matter, but I heartily recommend the powwow scene to people who can show up and be respectful. The one at Stanford on Mother's Day weekend is pretty awesome.

Claiming any expertise in powwow matters is risky business for sure. My parents and grandparents always went to shows and pow wows both. But I'm adopted and never knew any of this until I searched and reunited with them. Yes. I'm a head and then found out my birthparents and grandparents were too....must be in the DNA! I would sooooo like to hear from heads who have followed both trails as I gain some footing on walking both myself. The respectfulness is a no-brainer to me. Though, no matter how respectful, it's deeply inbedded in the powwow culture to be critical (sound familiar?) of newbs, "wannabees", white people, and "Hippies". I have been to a few, danced, and have had no issues. There is a code of etiquette for sure....just like shows. It's these similarities that would make for interesting discussion. Dancing or drumming and how it makes one feel at either place would be interesting to hear about too. Heads digging powwows would be a pretty obvious crossover. Though, I'd like to turn it around and hear perspectives from Indians who love the Dead. But hearing from heads with extensive powwows under their belt would be cool too. Intertribals are just such a sweet time to dance and feel the drum. In fact, any discussion on this would be cool. Something I've not seen much of. Maybe this is a very small niche we're talking here, which would make it all the more intersting yet rare to get real responses. Any Native Heads out there? Maybe I ought to risk posting on some Indian boards and some folks might come out of the "closet". In Indian culture, it seems totally uncool to be into anything remotely "hippy". Yet, hip-hop, metal, and other genre's seem to fly just fine.

(noting that my personal experience is limited to Stanford), one thing that seems to be a pretty big deal in the powwow scene is No Drugs. Which would make clueless hippie wannabes on the scene even more problematic. (Never mind the fact that the powwow in question takes place in the eucalyptus groves a stone's throw from the Frost, at about the right time of year, and it does bring back the memories...)

Thanks Marye, always the little brother that was forgotten at home...remember the cross Canada tour of '70, we know how to treat 'em! I am an Edmontononian/Saskatoonian/Torontonian (is there such a thing - since they are diametrically opposite in nature) Deadhead. I was not lucky enough to win out on MO and got shut out of TM...still thinking about heading down to the shows, though have no hotel or formal plans as of yet, so yeah I am open to chatting and finding a bench say in Gary IN somewhere!

Good morning rockers!!!! As many of you may or may not know, I am a bit of a “1971 Dead fanatic”. I have taken on a slightly ambitious project, documenting all 1971 Dead shows, the end result of which I hope will combine numerous “facts/factoids” about shows with recollections of folks who actually attended Dead shows in 1971. In order to accomplish this, I need the help of the Dead fan community. ALL contributions will be properly and specifically credited. If you attended ANY shows in 1971 and have ANY recollections to share, PLEASE consider participating. Please PM me for details. While of course I’m happy to hear from anybody who attended “classic 71 shows” such as Port Chester, Fillmore East, Harding Theater, Felt Forum, etc., I’m particularly interested in hearing from folks who may have attended lesser known, “out of the way” shows, such as: 1/21/71 Davis 1/22/71 Lane Community College 3/5/71 Oakland 4/14/71 Bucknell 4/18/71 Cortland 6/21/71 Chateau d’Herouville 8/4/71 Terminal Island 10/19/71 Northrop Auditorium 11/11/71 Atlanta 11/17/71 Albuquerque In addition, if ANYBODY out there has “paper ephemera” related to 1971 shows, Please consider participating. I’m looking especially for: Newspaper/print media articles Show posters/handbills Ticket stubs Photographs Thanks in advance to all who participate and contribute! Rock on, Doc Gillespie

Any Calgarian heads heading off to the Dark Star Jubilee in Columbus in May? It's only $130 US for a ticket to the 3 day festival and with DSO playing 3-2 set shows, it works out to only $14 per hour of Dead music... plus all the other acts! Sadly I don't have the time or money to get to as many shows as I would like, so I've got to stretch it where I can...

This forum seems a little dead (no pun intended) last post was may 2016. Just wanted to raise my freak flag. Im a lifelong deadhead, guitarist, bass player and turntablist and as far as I can tell the last hippy in the city of Ottawa. I make some sick dead turntable mixes. Just sayin.

I've been to several of them. I was 10 and 12 years old, though. Then in '78 I had a girlfriend & roomie who was 100% Yankton Sioux. She told me some things, like there are other ceremonies that r hidden from the tourists. There are sweat lodges used for spiritual and physical healing & cleansing. There are peyote ceremonies as well. However, outsiders are not welcome. You must be a believer. If you wish to know more, read Black Elk Speaks, a book that records his visions and dreams. Mainly just be respectful. Feel the beat of the drummers (called 49ers, something to do with 1849..maybe the black hills gold?) And she told me never take her to a Cheyenne pow wow because the Sioux and Cheyenne don't get along too well. Since I'm no expert I can't give any recommendations. She was a deadhead like me, but it's not polite to speak of the dead in most Sioux Nations. So until we go to solve the great mystery, stay high and smile, smile, smile!

Hey Now fella Northern headz!!!! I hail from and returned to the beautiful city of Montreal. It served as a great launching point for many Northern (Hamilton) and Northeastern (Albany Boston Buffalo) launching point for 10 known illustrious shows starting on 3.24.91 at the ripe age of 15 and sadly ending on 6.15.95. How I miss those days, everyday! But thank goodness for the internet and it’s endless golden nuggets of bliss!!! I had to take out an ad in the back of relix to trade tapes and now have thousands of hours of sbds and YouTube to keep me content, which I always have been! My intake is just more than ever. Of some things not others.... one love
