Anyone seen them lately? They are coming to Red Rocks next summer, I used to really like them. They backed out playing here what was it last year or the year before ... can't remember but wondering if anyone has any reviews... thanks ... Haven't seen them since probably the late 70s, but I heard some good things recently about Ian Anderson "solo" (I think there was a band, so not solo as such). The comments were good enough for me to go hmmmm.... Just wish I could remember where I read what so that I could throw you a link.

Seeing him/them (Patty Griffin on harmony vox, the inestimable Buddy Miller on guitar) Monday in Charlotte, with openers North Mississippi Allstar "duo" (just the Dickenson brothers, apparently doing their best White Stripes imitation...and by all reports that I've run across, quite well). This is a theater show, icing on the cake, in my book. Stay tuned for a report. Also just nabbed tix for the Avett Brothers, also Charlotte, for April. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals opening, another sweet opening act. Hard to beat the Avetts on their home turf...

Unfortunately they are playing the worst venue in Denver. So I skipped out on buying tickets. Probably not a wise decision. Maybe I can catch them in Telluride this summer. Now that would be awesome. I see that YMSB is also playing the same said venue :( Bummer. All they and Plant need to do is walk 2 blocks east on Colfax Ave to the Ogden Theatre and I would be there in a flash. Ahh well.. Plant's web site has been posting reviews of the current tour daily. They are playing Telluride this year. Emmylou Harris is also on the bill. There is a picture of Emmylou & Robert on his site. My call - she comes out as a guest to sing? Could be epic Not to mention the great line-up for the rest of this fest. Jas Obrecht cd review First, a quick background check: Barry “The Fish” Melton played lead guitar on the San Francisco scene’s first psychedelic record, and went on to play the Monterey and Woodstock festivals. His new “neo-psychedelic” release with Parisian guitarist/vocalist Stephan Missri and band is, in a word, extraordinary. It’s trippy, politically and socially conscious, and brilliantly played. Deadheads – Garcia freaks in particular – will love Melton and Missri’s flowing solos, epitomized by the Jerry-esque joyride of “Jamasutra Mantra.” Like the early Allman Brothers Band and Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner with Lou Reed, Melton and Missri create intriguing two-guitar interplay without venturing into overkill. They freak-out Hendrix-style on “Vert,” and Barry resurrects his wicked vibrato of yore for “Le Dernier Homme en Ville.” His sea shanty-cum-ecological call to arms “Shady Grove” recalls his Country Joe & The Fish era and then segues into one of the album’s best jams. International feels abound. Algerian-born Missri sings mostly in French, with a smooth, smoky voice. Rhythms and melodies seamlessly embrace rock, blues, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and African influences. “This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Melton, who’s worked as a public defender in northern California. “Much of my early music was influenced by Middle Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with Country Joe in the 1967 movie Monterey Pop.” Danish bassist Charles Jannic and French drummer Christophe Rossi excel at everything – hats off to these guys, as well as to Melton and Missri for their fine, fine playing and producing. I've been a little remiss getting back here with a review of the show I caught in Charlotte on Monday night. So... First, North Mississippi Allstar Duo opened (just Luther and Cody), and it sure would have been nice to hear a full set from them. Excellent opener for the evening, and I got a chance to chat them up for a couple of minutes after their set, as they were autographing at the merch booth. Nice guys! As for Mr Plant...if you came to the show hoping to hear a full-on onslaught of Led Zeppelin tunes, you probably walked out after the first song: "Black Dog"...which I never would have recognized if not for the lyrics. Ditto "Houses of the Holy" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine." All the songs were performed through the lens of this "Americana Noir" vibe (the best way I can describe it) that is the signature sound of this Band of Joy. If you checked your expectations at the door, then it was an excellent evening. Judging by the crowd (everyone on the theatre floor stood for the entire show, not sure what was happening up in balcony-land), they knew just what to expect and was seriously into the band. Unlike the "Raising Sand" tour, where the evening was split pretty evenly between Plant and Alison Krauss, this was more of a Plant solo night. He did step back from the mic to give Patti Griffin, Buddy Miller, and Darrel Scott each a song to sing (Plant fading to the back of the stage to add an occasional harmony vocal or harmonica fill). The songs from the current album sounded great, especially for me Los Lobos' "Angel Dance", Richard Thompson's "House of Cards," and "Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down." We did get a couple of Zep songs that did not feature a reworked melody: "Ramble On" (with the iconic John Paul Jones bass melody line intact -- the only time I heard an instrumental reference to Zeppelin -- Buddy Miller wasn't going anywhere near Jimmy Page-land) and "Rock and Roll" in the encore. Ok, go see this tour. I just found out that Plant has been added to this year's Merlefest here in my neck of the woods...very good news indeed.

I caught most of the House of Floyd last weekend and just wanted to pass the word, since there's not much Floyd written about here. This was the closest thing to an old Floyd concert that I've experienced, other than the recent Roger/Dave shows. They've got the space jam thing totally together. The Floyd tribute bands I've tried the past few hears have been mostly note for note copying of albums, especially the later albums which I'm not that fond of anyway (I was, just not anymore). House of Floyd played some great tunes and had the right "feel". They didn't copy/peforrm, but actually played the music as if it was their own. So some songs barely even sounded like the originals but it didn't matter at all. And the songs went from one right into the other. Very Dead-like. And the energy was turned on full throughout. This is the only video I've found of the show. I missed about the first half of the first set, but I got to see Echoes (AWESOME!), Shine On II (see video), some tunes I never heard that really jammed, and a Dark Side of the Moon that was full of amazing energy and effects. I haven't heard Bonham's band, but I'll still say, don't pass up Band of Joy.

Chick Jagger is a chick-fronted Rolling Stones tribute that's been rocking the San Francisco Bay Area since 2010, playing classics from all eras of the Stones’ fabulous 50 year career. Female lead singer Chick Jagger (Christina Michelle) is a dynamic performer and Rolling Stones enthusiast who has made a careful study of Mick Jagger's moves and stage persona. She really Moves Like Jagger! The band puts on an high-energy, exciting, theatrical show, complete with costumes recreating the Stones' own fashion styles. What's this got to do with the GD? Chick Jagger's bass player, Janet Furman (me) was long ago part of the Dead's recording crew, having spun the knobs and tape reels on the Europe 72 recordings, the Sunshine Daydream movie, and lots of other recordings of that era. Caught little feat last week for their 50th anniversary show, recommend any and all try and check these guys out if they come to your area, great set list you can check out at their website. It was a real treat when Asheville native Warren Hayes stopped by and joined the feat for Spanish moon, Skin it back and Dixie chicken. He fit right in with his slide guitar and gravely voice, if you closed your eyes, you would almost think Lowell was there. "There was whiskey and bad cocaine, poison get you just the same, and if that don't kill you soon, the women will down at the Spanish Moon"

On another note, the space rock supergroup Captain Beyond is on tour this year and even though Bobby Caldwell is the only original member left that still performs, these guys bring the goods, check them out if they are in your area.

Just scored tickets to the Electric Hot tuna tour, promises to be a good one, doing small venues this tour and I wouldn't miss them, check them out if you can.

Lastly, if they come anywhere near you, you have got to see Nick Mason's Saucerfull of Secrets band, they are awesome and doing early pre Dark Side tunes only, if you are a big fan of Arnold Layne, Interstellar Overdrive and Remember a Day, then get thee to the shows. Great light show too.

Want to create a requiem for Robert Hunter?
I think Robert Hunter would appreciate a few of us performing, live broadcasting and/or calling people on the phone at the same time for him.
This will allow the US to be used as a canvas and send a broadcast into space with the surges of several cell tower zones. Only a few of us needed really with interest in my work alone, so dont get discouraged if there is only a few of us.
I am also thinking he'd like to chill in Antarctica with all the folks that are going to need to go that ways to save on AC anyway (Antarctica AC is cheaper than fire/dust) and we keep him going by supporting his externalized mind structure aka infomorph that is still with us with cell apps and scans, we are calling it quits on him way to early because many of us know that when heavy weights like this have their synapses stop firing these days only a small portion of their consciousness that was housed in their brains bail (which in cases like this is seriously not going to effect him).
Anyway, lets create a requiem for him that broadcasts to space (and encourage the use of lucid dreams as a monitor which is the foundation of consciousness externalization).
I can solo this thing out if I don't hear from anyone (with whatever is causing our impossible isolation in the giant masses of artists since the 60's every show). I should just conference call a bunch of folks and start playing music for them or something that will work too. What pixelated image is best to sketch out on the US?

Use lucid dreams as a monitor when waking in the morning to defeat grief. This is an innovation on the popularized by using apps that remind you of what to dream and to move your hands in your mind to stay lucid (focusing on moving your hands in your mind only not physically moving your hands when falling back to sleep in the morning and you can control your dreams and dream what you want).
Side note: this is malleablitiy of consciousness needed to externalize consciousness from the 4 areas of the brain that house consciousness that span from the front of the skull above the eyes to the back of the skull above the spine [tape several simple electrodes at forehead and back of skull that are connected to a cell phone app then use lucid dreams as a monitor to flux consciousness sharing into the cell (same as if you lost your frontal lobe except the opposite)].

I saw Circles Around the Sun in Austin a couple of years ago. What a show! These guys took the CATS 1st album, and maybe another one or two, and stretched them masterfully into a 2 hour+ show. Single set. No breaks.
I really did not know what to expect, but they more than fulfilled expectations.
I describe them as a band with crazy improvisational skills, but with the discipline of Steely Dan. Outstanding.
disclosure: this was prior to Neal Casal's untimely demise... RIP. I hear they're still touring, and I'd bet they're just as exciting.

That's a bummer there isn't a dedicated space for upcoming Branford Marsalis at Stanford shows. While "Best Shows by Other Bands" might not be the ideal fit, it could still be an option to spread the word, especially if the forum allows discussions about upcoming events.

Coming to SLO Brew Rock in San Luis Obispo. Gonna be a great show in a very intimate room.
