    Remember the days
When we used to survive without all the AC? It seems like a different kind of hot these days. Of course, all older people say that. You have to wonder, though, what it would be like if sun spot activity, solar flares and such, suddenly wiped out the power grid for the month of August? Going to the mall wouldn't be an option. Checking your elderly neighbors would become a responsibility. Switching over to a more reliable food supply sans fridge. It all adds up to a degree of misery we'd all rather not experience. Experts say it is more likely than not.

    That triple-digit heat wave
Pulling into NC today. With a heaping dose of humidity in tow, I hear. Three words to explain why it's easier to cope with this kind of heat where I live now compared to anywhere else I've ever lived: central air conditioning. Hotter than a match head, indeed, Ted! Stay cool, folks. Positive vibes to the people dealing with wild fires and anyone trying to survive this oven with just a fan, or less, for relief.

Hot town, summer in the cityBack of my neck getting dirty and gritty Been down, isn't it a pity Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city All around, people looking half dead Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head... (Mark Sebastian 1966) Hard to believe Lovin' Spoonful sang this song 46 years ago! Meanwhile it's literally hotter than hell in most of the US this week. In Kansas, we'll be over 100 with no precipitation in sight. Keep those prayers and good thoughts coming for our friends in the mountains. Looking forward to our US Supreme Court decision in a few minutes....

First, it's a horror in Ohio with 3 dead at Chardon High School, then deadly twisters rip through Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and possibly in Kentucky or Tennessee today. In Kansas, we had 70 degree temps yesterday, now it's snowin w large flakes, confusing birds, humans and spring flowers alike. !!

Rain is but a tease in south KC this morning: 72 degree temp is very nice, but we can't seem to squeeze any rain outta them grey clouds. Meanwhile, up north of KC, rain is supposed to fall, Interstate 29 is still closed for the Missouri river flooding (thank you South Dakota!) the lowlands from Omaha south into Kansas and Missouri. Newsman this morning says they are diverting Joplin tornado FEMA funds to help pay for Irene's storm damage back east....

Death toll rises to 5 in Vermont
20 towns remain cut off from the outside world in Vermont. The devastation has been staggering. There are no people in the state, no matter how old, who can remember such a flood. Where there are towns connected to roads, bridges and pavement have been washed away. People are staggering around with a glazed look in their eyes. Many have lost everything and extremely few have flood insurance. This has been an extreme tragedy. No one had any real idea that this was possible...

Pinwheel down the road like carnival rides on the road to work this morning, hoping that I just hadn't had my ticket punched for a session of bumper cars! Not supposed to be like this in NC, at least not unless you're in the mountains. I moved from New England for this?

Sounds like a typical commute for us! Fun isn't it? Although so far it has been way too mild. We need some snow!!! "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

Lived in Maine a good long while...I actually used to have fun, which is to say actually enjoy, driving on fresh snow as long as no one else was on the road. It's this ice stuff that is more typical around here that gets scary, and the fact that the road crews aren't very well-prepared to handle it (a generous appraisal of their preparedness, I assure you). Yesterday you just didn't know minute-to-minute if the road was ok or if it was a sheet of ice. And then there's the clueless drivers -- one truck blew by me going at least 80 mph, and a few miles later I was following traffic going 5-10 mph. Reasonable speed was somewhere in between. Anyway, we'd be happy to send the snow and cold weather to CO where it belongs!

Got it up here in Ontario, Canada too. Beautiful snow, fluffy & flaky, just the way we like it. Already had a few good skates on the pond after the first snap and I'm looking forward to this lunar eclipse. Gonna go trudge through the woods in my woolens and breathe the good air. Happy Solstice!!!!

I went up to Paddy O'Quigley's, the other day, for a pint and met up with a bloody British chap who said airport runways were shut down for the first time he can remember, at both major London airports. Is the rest of Europe experiencing an early winter too? Y'all must be getting the snow that we're not getting here in Kansas City....

The nucleus of the late, great jazz fusion giants Weather Report.I'd be curious if any of the GD were fans. I'm betting yes. David Gans, Blair Jackson, do you know? Was Weather Report Suite a reference to them? Inquisitive minds would like to know. Happy holidays.

Well, I made it throught the blizzard at Heathrow last week and said "That's it, no more traveling!" Yet here I am am at home in Vermont with a wicked Nor'easter dropping a full 12" or more and making life a little less delightful. I think we can look forwad to more of the same all winter and in future winters. It''s a trend! I used to love it more when I did outdoor winter sports (besides cleaning the car and driving to work!)

Cold and dry just became cold and snowy: from Manhattan, KS to Columbia, MO, anywhere from 5" to 9" blanketed the ground. Shoveling the drive off took an hour, then the slow drive to work...whew, time for a nap... and a cookie!!

North Carolina hasn't exactly been a joy this winter season (a white Christmas even!), especially if you are in the mountains (I'm not). But then again, I've got nothing to complain about when you stack it up against minus-anything F for a temperature. Stay warm, folks!

That the storm front caused by the Europe '72 brouhaha subsides and we see calmer weather in these parts come next week. Looks like high '50s and sunny for my part of NC this weekend, hoping that some of your snow gets to melt away, unkle sam. I work with a guy from Boone and they've had something like 19 snow days for school kids already this season. Not fun at all.
