Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Ephemera...
Things that last no more than a day. So there you have it - when our boxes left Rhino Central, they were undoubtedly packed full of all sorts of ephemeral items relating to the tour. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the shipping time was more than a day, all these goodies, being ephemeral in nature, had evaporated into the ether by the time the boxes were delivered. Even the inclusion of small bags of silica gel couldn't prevent the inevitable from occuring. Now if these items had been described as long-term tour mementos then things would have turned out very differently and a whole lot of complaints on here would never have occurred. So in the end it all comes down to the careless use of marketing jargon.

The dust is sort of settling - I don't think so.
How many customers that have written to customer service and Dr Rhino about problems with Europe'72 CDs and "CD SLIP CASES" (Dr Rhinos words, not mine) have received replacements. This I would like to know. Excuses and half hearted promises is all that's been received.I look at this steamer trunk sitting on the desk and get aggada. That's not right, I just would like to enjoy the music from all 22 of these shows. For $450.00 I don't think that's too much to ask.

    What is ephemera?
From wikipedia:Ephemera are transitory written and printed matter not intended to be retained or preserved. The word derives from the Greek, meaning things lasting no more than a day. Some collectible ephemera are advertising trade cards, airsickness bags, bookmarks, catalogues, greeting cards, letters, pamphlets, postcards, posters, prospectuses, stock certificates, tickets and magazines. Looking through the comments just now I see that everybody, even poor potatoe-digging Maine farmers, will be able to get this if they save their pennies. And, like Cosmic Badger,I would have ordered the thing for $450 without all the doo-dads. But Badger's post brought up one other thing for me -- certain people are priveleged around these here parts. Like everything else in life, I guess you got to put in some time, some where, somehow. But it does smack of elitism. ~ Now I don't know but I've been told It's hard to run with the weight of gold Other hand I heard it said It's just as hard with the weight of lead ~

i'm sure the 3000 dollar post was a joke, sick joke, but still a joke, no one has multiple copies and who would pay it anyway. I think I will leave this thread behind, nothing but sour grapes on here now. lets call the cops, that will help, geeze, where's your sense of humor.

I sent an email right away - have not received a word back does this mean (a) I'm screwed or (b) the system is jammed up and I still may receive an email and a chance to order. Can anyone monitoring this give me the definitive word

is a pole sucker. And a loser and an idiot. As far as paying 450 bucks for the music alone...well that's cold comfort for those/myself that got f**ked out of buying the box. Thanks but it's "all or nothing" for me. Trading music is really the way to go anyways. Thanks to Rhino for releasing it. I'ts been a stressful 4 days. Now I can get on with my life.

I had no problem spending $450 on this box set, but will not be paying that much for the "Music Only" piece that they are offering...I'll go ahead and get that for free from the internet, as I am sure many others will be doing...these guys really have their head up their f'ing ass!

OK, I have calmed down a bit. In retrospect i can't believe how this upset me as much as it did. This shows me the hold material possessions have over me. This is a cool box set to be sure but it is after all just cardboard and plastic. I can take my family for a weekend away for that price! In fact, this has inspired me to start getting rid of all material possessions that I am holding on to. Anything that I have and hoard but the only benefit I get is the knowledge that I own it. I watch those American Pickers shows and Hoarders and Pawn Stars and I think its amazing the amount of stuff that IS cool but can't possibly be used in a lifetime. We are drowning in crap we don't need. I'm going to live in a cave.

Those who made reservations and who have been sent reservation codes are given 2 weeks to complete their order. I am sure many of these reservations will lapse. I know this may be cold comfort for those who missed out, but there might just be a chance of returns in 2 weeks' time. I do feel priveleged to have got on the bus for the box set and I know I would be going completely crazy if I had been a loser in the lottery, for that is what it was. I just sat for hour after hour trying to order on the first day and for a tiny short while there was a 'hole in the clouds' for just long enough to register an order while all were sleeping in the US. Luck, persistence and maybe some reward for spending way too much time hanging around this place. I wish everyone else a good slice of luck too and I know too that the music will eventually be available 'one way or another' to those determined to find it (just like Fillmore West)

I got the email talking about this box set and reserved it straight away. Waited the 24 hours for the email to come which never did. Then I hear about a screw up and re-reserve the set and never get an email. This is simply not right on any level. I should not be penalized because of their screw up and this will take a very long time to get over. Some of the late comers get a good deal because deadnet did not have their act together. Thanks for nothing, literally.

"Takes all you got just to stay on the beat . . ." Music only is better than nothing, but why not just make more of the whole box set, especially if we're all paying the same price. There's no need to stick with an arbitrary limit of 7200 when you clearly underestimated the demand. Contrived scarcity is not necessary; just decide to make more. Call it a second edition if you want to make the first run a collector's item, but please don't shut out your loyal customers just because they came in a day late. DW

...but whatever. If it happens it happens and if it doesn't at least I'm in good (if righteously indignant) company. I will not be listening to Pinkus' barf up some happy talk, or the Golden Road folks tossing him softballs. Can't help but notice Mr. Rhino's GD VP has just appeared in the last few months. Something's changed in the Rhinoverse bwahahahaha. Some things to remember: *There's "The Grateful Dead Family" - whoever that includes these days. Band members etc. Then there's "Rhino" (which means Warner Music Group and ya know...fuck the WB). I doubt the Grateful Dead Family has much to do with any of the numerous situations that have occurred with the release of music since Rhino's been mishandling things. The band certainly not, they sold the marketing rights specifically to NOT HAVE TO SCREW WITH THE BUSINESS STUFF...well, that big pile of cash probably had something to do with it but still. *The Catalog was NOT sold to Rhino, the *marketing rights* to the Catalog was (were?) sold to Rhino FOR A LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME, and I believe that time runs out in the next few years; I seem to recall 2014 or 2015, I'm sure one of the more savvy 'Heads can provide details. THE DEAD STILL OWN THE MUSIC, and the music will not be enslaved to the clueless marketing suits and mindless robotic accountants forever. *Without knowing the more intimate details of the marketing agreement I have guesses about other things: Some of the people who appear to be "working for the Dead" are in fact working under contracts with Rhino. Essay writers come to mind, the engineers and such.( I would hope the Dead have gotten wise enough in their old age to still retain ownership of the tapes, even after remastering). These "contract employee" people may not in their hearts agree with how Rhino is handling this, but these people are required to "toe the company line" in order to keep getting paid or continue to get contracts for future work, whatever. *I'm thinking this "Dead Deal" hasn't worked out as lucratively for Rhino as the mindless robotic accountants had hoped, back when the agreement was first inked. They had no real idea about the GD community - hell, they freaked out monkey nuts when they realized all the shows were available for free download at archive.org after the fact, and there was a big brouhaha just to get the soundboards restricted to "streaming only". *The mindless robotic accountants are all about keeping costs to a bare minimum and this is probably why there aren't more download options available. Servers cost $$$ and some mindless robotic cost benefit analysis didn't make things look cost effective. Apparently investing in a robust, reliable emailing/ecommerce system wasn't considered to be worth the investment either. *I suspect there will be jobs lost at Rhino over this latest debacle, and I suspect whatever passes for business management with GDP these days will be taking a long hard look at how the Catalogue is handled in the future, should they choose to go the same "marketing agreement" route.

Maybe it just this generation's twist on korporate america.... Let's see.....you get your customers to pay up front for all the development and production costs....and just from word-of-mouth basically. Then you send these people 60 pieces of plastic in a big BONUS plastic container 9 months from now. In the meantime, every subsequent sale of this music -- starting from Customer #7201 -- is pure profit! Ballsy? Brilliantly so.

So I placed an order on Friday night and was told I'd get a confirmation email within 24 hours. The email hasn't come and I guess its safe to assume my reservation was never made? This sucks. I missed out on the Fillmore Box and was really looking forward to this one.

As expected went on eBay and some db is selling his confirmation for $2000. He even goes so far as to ask what you want written on it since it was one of the first 3000. Hopefully this isn't typical of what people are doing if you were one of the lucky ones not to get screwed.

But when I placed my order, there was an option in the cart to "Add another boxed set?" I played around with the idea of ordering multiple copies (christmas gifts, whatever), but decided against it. But I did have 4 copies, all personalized, in my cart at one point. I think there will be availability of boxed sets after the initial expiration of the codes comes and goes. Just for what it's worth. Also, I suppose there may be "miracle extras" as far as the codes go? or are they only usable by the original email address? Good luck to all. I got my "one."

Well....it's coming back home to Europe! Got my unique code and ordered 4 copies - 1 for me, one for my son and 2 for buddies who were unlucky enough to have not hit the jackpot and get the codes. I could have ordered up to ten and made $000's at Xmas but chose not to - so I assume that leaves 6 from my allowance open for others to buy once the deadlines up. My advice...be patient brothers and sisters and keep trying...some left over from the lottery will be released. If not i'm sure some will be on ebay at xmas and if you want things bad enough you'll have to pay the price.....like I did for the Fillmore box after that was deleted (I paid $700 on ebay) and the inflated ticket prices I often paid to get to shows leaving from the UK. But for me Europe's coming back to me in England - now lets hope they do a '77 box next year - or I'd love the full set of East Coast shows from '90 which I attended almost every one! Or hey...i'm being greedy but Europe '90!! May the four winds blow you safely home

As others here, I tried in vain to actually order the set almost minutes after it supposedly went on sale. Couldn't complete the transaction. I then give my information to reserve a copy. I got an e-mail last night telling me that I would receive a unique code and a link to order, but seeing how others have already received their codes and have already ordered, I am starting to worry. I know they said within 48 hours I will get the code.... so does anyone know how they are distributing these codes and e-mails? Are they spacing them apart so they don't get hit hard in people trying to order? This is so frustrating it isn't funny. :-)

Can someone order 4 copies with one code? My email said that 1 box set was reserved for me... I have a confirmed order, and I'm wondering if there's a way I can transfer the code to someone else who wasn't lucky enough to get one. Is that possible? (And I'm not looking for any compensation...) The other possibility is that I buy a second box and sell it at cost (plus shipping) to someone in Europe who couldn't get one (I'm in France, so I wouldn't ship outside of Europe).

Like many of you - I ordered the second I got the first email - 4 copies - then nothing - so the next day I re-registered for 4 copies - I NEVER received a code first time but because I re-registered the 2nd day I managed to get the code and order my four sets! So if you ordered first day - chances are there was an admin f**k up (common on dead.net) - as I knew this is often the case I registered a second time and phew - I made it! PS If one of my buddies does not buy the box i've ordered for them i'll put it for resale on ebay in Septmeber at the start bid of what I paid. But hey...isn't music the important thing after all - why aren't those of you which missed the box ordering the cds - youre only losing a box and a book??? I'd rather have order the fillmore set after deletion as cds with no box for less than the $700 i paid on ebay! May the four winds blow you safely home

is that the box set reserve notifications are going out first for the personalized copies, then the unpersonalized copies, with considerable personal attention involved, and it's taking a while. As I know more I will report it, and again, sorry things are not running as smoothly as we all would wish.

PS I assume that others who go the code also seem to have the opportunity to order 10 copies - therefore only 720 of us got lucky! Assume the average joe (i.e. not f***ing scam merchants to resell on ebay) order only 2-3 copies each (for them and friends) - then there may be as many as 7*720 left for resale once the closing date is here? So I decide to call Dead.net and I am told that only 1/2 the codes have gone out so far, and the rest of the codes are expected to go out on Monday. I have no idea what to believe since the process of trying to get this box has been the most frustrating thing I have ever had to deal with in a long time. And reading so many posts here and on other sites where people never received "reservation" confirmation e-mails, etc... I don't know what to believe. I know I am probably being impatient, but with others receiving their codes, I have some trepidation about whether I will actually receive my code or not. If I'm going to spend $450.00 I would rather, since I am supposed to have reserved one in time, have the limited edition box.

"I love all the apologists chiming in to defend the debacle that is the E72 box set release: "It's just about music." "They're doing the best they can." "The packaging is just trinkets, who cares?" "Name calling won't help." "Grow up." Puh-leeze. This box set is a multi-million-dollar BUSINESS venture. Do the math: $450 * 7,200 = $3.24 million."

I hope so...i hope you get them! But as I said if you're a dead fanatic like me - you'd do (nearly) anything to get/do anything dead-related. I second mortgaged my home to do Europe 72. I paid 7 times the retail price for Fillmore once it was deleted - if I missed this one i'd just have to save and work my ass off to pay $3000 to someone who has it. To be honest the dude on ebay asking $2000 should save himself - they'd be worth a lot more by Xmas. If someone here wants one really bad i'd take his offer - he already has an offer on it but obviously not the full $2000 yet May the four winds blow you safely home

So I see marye indicates that the Personalized codes are going out first, fine... but as I mentioned I have not yet received my code, and my reservation e-mail (the first one) indicated I did reserve a personalized copy of the box. Again I ask, does anyone have "proof" of exactly what is going on. UGGHHHH.

So as saintstephen1971 seemed to indicate, he got a code and ordered 4 boxes - and he seemed to have indicated he could have ordered up to 10 boxes!!!!!! Is this true... is one code allowing people to order up to 10 boxes? If that is the case, then the reservation process (of giving a name and e-mail address), which I assumed was for 1 box, but allowing those who get codes to order up to 10 boxes is just as, or more, screwed up then the initial (non)-ordering process when the box originally went up for "sale". I don't know the real "truth" here, but if what saintstephen1971 is true, then people receiving codes may still get shut out, or they may never receive the code after all. I am so confused it's beyond belief. Again I ask... can someone please post here "EXACTLY" what is going on and what we can expect.. at least those that are supposed to have legitimately reserved ONE box. I only need ONE box, and only want ONE box.

Allowing people to order more than one box is one of the most egregious mistakes possible. How the hell could they be that shortsighted?

Good point Mike T - but....when I reserved...I did reserve 4 copies.....however why it gave me the up to 10 option i'm not sure. I could have ordered an extra 6 and made maybe $12000 but i'm not like that I just wish there was enough for everyone - but...after getting badly stung with the fillmore box - I feel like there is some justice after all! May the four winds blow you safely home

weird...So, I "reserved" one on Friday online, but I didn't get a confirmation email, a "code" email, or anything else. I guess I'm outta luck???? WTF????? Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode, where Jerry and Elaine are picking up a rental car that is supposed to be "reserved". Sucks. I just want to buy one!

Hey bud, when you get your multiple box sets be sure to grease them up real good so you can stick them up your @$$. On the BUS since 12-29-1968, and I'm never getting off. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

The biggest release in Grateful Dead history is the biggest screw up. And I am not very impressed with the community either. We are supposed to take what we need then pass it on. I have always been a bit naive though. To think people actually identify with the ideals that are expressed in the lyrics. I guess naive is not the word. Stupid maybe that's the word.

I'm in the exact same boat. I "reserved" one on Friday and haven't gotten an email or anything.

I love how the people that already received a code are the ones saying be patient. I'm pretty sure if you were like the ones who have so far been shut out you'd be singing a different tune. I think everyone can agree this was a total disaster. They should have thought about doing it the right way before announcing anything. Do it right or don't do it at all.

Hey folks- I'm a dying cancer patient of 55 years old and I just was able to check my e-mail yesterday as of 10:00 am and when I checked again, EUROPE 72 BOX SET READ "IT'S SOLD OUT"!!! wow!!! I listened to most of all of this run (as much as I had) on repeat while I was undergoing 4 rounds of chemo and 3 rounds of radiation to kill the epiphiliod sarcoma in my left arm (going to have to have amputated in next 3-4 months) and the music Jerry & the boys put out during that run touched my soul like nothing I can describe. It gave me hope. It put a smile on my face while I was facing death....And now, because of the availability for some to order up to 10 TEN!!!!! A HOUSEHOLD!!!! (no 1-3 limit?!!??!?), I'M GOING TO MISS OUT????!! I know they said there will be another way to get these shows but are you serious???? I wasn't complacent about this, I learned my lesson with Fillmore west and now they are sold out.. wow.. 7500???? There's 15000 furthur fans at shows in the middle of nowhere to see the shadow of what 72 Dead sounded like!!!!!!!!!! I beg of you, plead with any of you that have any type of compassion for a dead fan on his last legs here at MD Anderson in Houston, please, please grant a dying man his wish and help out with this box set.. I would say I would give my left arm for it but I'm already doing so in this process of cancer... I had to inject some humor in here b/c when I saw this I started balling hysterically for the first time in 13 years.. Please help this broken soul out.. I can paypal $500 at the drop of a hat but right now, that doesn't seem it will cut the mustard. -Austin (ajdejarnette@aol.com)) ---After my signature is the copied e-mail information of when I received the email from dead.net first informing me of the release and it brought excitement to me in which I have not felt literally since my diagnosis.. That and the birth of my first grandchild,.. Announcing the biggest release in Grateful Dead history Dead.net to you - yesterday More Details From: Dead.net Hide To: ajdejarnette Sat, Jan 22, 2011 10:00 am ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Jan 22!!!!!! I was so ill friday & saturday that the news of this might have even brought some fight back but I didn't receive the email and don't have a working laptop in my room here @ MDA to regularly visit the site or any message boards that I poured my life into when I was diagnosed friends from the "golden years"... I've bought every release for the past couple years (since I could afford it) and tried to order this box set since the minute it was offered, 2pm last Wednesday - Waiting for my link still and now I see that they're all sold out - pretty crushing. I think I will just wait for my shitty '88 first roadtrips release, hope that the rest of my subscription is halfway listenable and then be done here. Not cool at all, really disappointing.

"So, I "reserved" one on Friday online, but I didn't get a confirmation email, a "code" email, or anything else. I guess I'm outta luck???? WTF?????" "I "reserved" one on Friday and haven't gotten an email or anything." I know they haven't sent all the emails yet, but I didn't get one announcing it either. I've signed up for the newsletter and am a Road Trips subscriber so I'm concerned about that. Frankly, I'm surprised how worried I am about this. And for all you who are buying one just to put on ebay for an exorbitant markup, I hope you choke on it. I will go without before I let you profit from me.

This seems absurdly excessive. First, I already struggle to keep up with the flow of regular releases; I am not made of money. There is no way I can justify this kind of expense. Secondly, when would I listen to all of this? It is more music than a person can actually absorb, especially if he or she ever listens to anything else by any other musician. And finally, where would it go? I live in an apartment that is already bursting at the seams with books, records and CDs. This is for the crazy rich. I have to declare myself officially alienated by this release. And aren't we supposed to be moving away from the CD format? Didn't Phil himself say that he didn't know why anyone would buy CDs anymore? This just seems cynical. What they should be doing is offering streaming access to this at a reasonable subscription rate, not cashing in on the pocketbooks of all the fatcat deadheads out there. Arrgh.

It is a free country. That said...it is not cool to buy up extra of these box sets to make dough. It is even not cooler to post that you bought extra when it's sold out. In the grand scheme of things not really that important. However, there are better ways to make money than to take advantage of people's huge admiration of the Grateful Dead. Boycott ebay sales!!!
