Dave's Picks Volume 28: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 6/17/76

This year's Dave's Picks series comes to a close just as the band's getting back together again in '76. By the time the Grateful Dead hit New Jersey’s Capitol Theatre - for the very first time - on 6/17/76, they were buzzing from their reunion, armed with new and revived material, the Rhythm Devils reformed with the mischievous Mickey Hart once again behind the kit. They'd skived off the unwieldy Wall of Sound and scaled back the venues from cavernous arenas to intimate theatres. Quite the treat!

During the first set, the Dead's playing was nuanced ("Cold Rain And Snow"), detailed ("Looks Like Rain"), and intricate ("The Music Never Stopped"); the singing struck softly ("Row Jimmy") and raised hairs ("Ship Of Fools"). But it’s the big barreling energy of the second set you’ll want to brace yourself for, replete with a disco'd "Dancing In The Streets," a low-down funky “Help”>”Slip”>”Franklin's” and a wind 'em up to wind down "Let It Grow">"Wharf Rat">"Around and Around." Can you keep up? There's only one way to find out.

This complete show, balanced out with a couple of bonus tracks from 6/23/76 and 6/28/76, was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 28 is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Grab a copy before they're gone, gone, gone.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

GD76 is unique in sound. it is indeed "slinky" and just plain fun. it also sometimes sounds like someone playing a saw. aye; good pick, Dave

Interested in what Dave gear Dave was fishing with. Looks like about a 6 weight fly rod, but who made a 50th anniversary reel? Maybe a florescent streamer tied on? Bears love those.

The first time the Grateful Dead came into my life was when Jerry's death was reported in the news I didn’t give it a second thought, I was 17. At a friends house, later that year for a party when I heard Grateful Dead music for the first time and it was not intentional. A friend was playing a CD, Zabriskie Point soundtrack and it had a Dark Star excerpt that lasted 2 minuets 33 seconds. Being already relaxed when that music played, that song, I was so confused it did not fit into anything I currently knew about music and blew me away, it seamed other worldly. Everyone passed out and I made the decision to steal that CD (I know not a cool thing to do, karma kicked my ass later for it)not because I knew it was Grateful Dead but instead to learn what it was. This was before the internet or cell phones, taking a pic of the CD and getting on Ebay was not possible. That snippet of music drove me to discover the music and love what has been given to us. Grateful Dead music is the only music that brings tears of joy when I listen. We all have our favorites mine is that 2:33 of Dark Star from Zabriskie Point that I still have in my collection today.

Folks, give this pick a chance.I am NOT a '76 guy. I am mainly a pre-hiatus guy, with a smattering of '77-'78, and a tiny smattering of 80s. I actually complained about the last '76 release from Dave, Vol. 18. I found it too slow, and kind of boring - slow, the common complaint about '76 shows. I already have a copy of this show on my phone. I only have five shows from '76 available to play in the car, and this is one of them. Why? I'm not even sure. I haven't played it in a while, but let me just say I am very, very picky about Dead shows. I get more annoyed over vocal flubs, out of tune instruments or singing, or bad mixes than most Deadheads around here. So why do I keep THIS show, of all '76 shows, on my phone? I suspect it's the Help>Slip>Frank, but it's probably just the whole show overall. It's got to be pretty damn solid if I haven't deleted it. It's a Betty board, and it's got to be one hell of a lot better mix than DaP 27. So let's relax and enjoy.

Was just wondering if any of you were able to obtain replacement discs yet for Vol.28. I send the Doctor an email on 10/29, and was told a replacement for my damaged disc 3 was on its way in 2-4 weeks, but nothing yet. Bummed.

No, not yet, asked for replacements for Dave's 28 first, then the PNW discs second, got PNW discs but no word on the Dave's skipping discs yet.
Dead and Co. tickets on sale when? how much? went to their site and it sent me to a resale site, 82.00 for lawn? seriously?
on another note, have any of you heard about there being people at the shows who were given free tickets, that were put there by the band to promote them? to fill up the stadiums? I heard a weird rumor yesterday and just wanted to see if any of you had heard about this? say it's not true Bobby.

If you click on the "View" button to the side of the PM, it opens up the whole thread. From there near the top there is an option called "Delete Thread" that deletes the whole thing (probably just after sending a copy to the FBI, your mom and your first grade teacher).

I emailed Dr Rhino on 14th and 27th November but so far only had automated reply saying very busy and will respond within 5 days. I guess he must be snowed under with so many faulty disc complaints
I'm going to leave it another couple of weeks before chasing up again

Dr - thanks for the link for the 31 days, I saved the link from last year and it got me close, but yours got me there. First two days downloaded :-)

Jim - I've "deleted" a pm from my long list of old pm's. The field is the "view" column is blank, but the other info still there, you can't read it, but still taking up space on the PM list. I have logged off AND rebooted to no avail,,, oh well.

I did a stupid thing online last week. In the early hours of the morning a message appeared on my lap top telling me that 3 viruses had been identified, and that I needed to counteract immediately. By paying £45.00, this firm said they would restore everything back to normal. Except they didn't, and requested a further payment, instead. I didn't pay that-but I did pay the first amount. I realised what I had done-been hacked-if that's the right word. Anyway, I managed to recoup my losses-luckily I paid by Paypal. I took my computer back to the shop for a proper clean up, and everything is okay again. I thought I was wise to things, too...

I agree that Clementine always sounded great when it was played. Other highlights of 1968, for me, are New Potato Caboose and the way China Cat goes into The Eleven.

The 12/14/71 show is awesome. Great setlist, great performance, and strong audio quality. I jumped on the Albuquerque show when this came out, and never quite gave the December 14th show it's du ( largely because Dave's Picks 22 covered this ground well). The NFA => GDTRFB => NFA is real ass-kicker (the first NFA is 8 freakin' minutes).

Wow this robot protection thing cuts you off mid-sentence doesn't it. Doesn't even return You Back to the comment box automatically. You have to scroll and click not so easy on the cell phone driving. I have this sinking feeling that Daves picks 29 it's going to take a few days to sell out, maybe longer. I hope I'm wrong, but I really think that the message board traffic this site used to get generated a lot of sales. Maybe I'm wrong we'll see.

I haven't been having the troubles other have using this site.. but I am a PC, not a phone user. I have pretty much gotten used to it, but ease of entry and maneuvering are not as clean. True with many upgrades, I guess.

I believe the 12/14 was a favorite of the keeper of the 71 flame, forensicdoceleven. I loved that release, too.. but in some regards, I am not that heard to please and the sonic upgrade for the Albuquerque show is a big deal. I enjoyed the latest 76 show a lot also. Both great releases.

Back to the upgrade and related problems.. the reason they even have these message boards is to fuel hype and guide sales, hopefully upward. The recent increase in disc quality issues combined with the upgrade will certainly have an effect, more likely on box sets than on Dave's Picks. If I were them I would Take A Step Back.. and rethink things. KayakGuy was correctly pushing for plangent processing for Dave's Picks a few months ago, they could roll that into the fold, better a better handle on quality assurance and try to correct the course into 2019/2020 and beyond.
oh.. and tone down the white just a tad.. oww, my eyeballs.. :D

At some point they will release another 1974 show in the Daves Picks series. I'm hoping for either June 23rd or July 25th, but I am predicting he goes with February 23rd. Possibly next year... but this prediction is good until the next 1974 release...

I'm really looking forward to the swing show in February. I'm rarely familiar with soundboards, but this one's been on my radar a long time. Even with the high number of releases we have from 1977, this one is still special. The time is moving slowly though...

I feel like the lysergic is just kicking in or approaching the first scaleable peak, for the band, during this one. Soft and gentle, Jerry so patient choosing each note like it truly matters. Wow, what a thing this band was. Getting it on every level, it would take an army of Joseph Campbells to fully digest it and construct it with words. Words get in the way.

Saw Fleetwood Mac last night. There is other music, than the Dead - it's true. Nothing with the weight, but good stuff nonetheless. Mike Campbell was a treasure. God bless Tom Petty, just like Johnny Cash.

Yeah the new format is like Wal-mart with the fluorescents on 110%. Oh well. It is what it is.

October 29th discover skip on Disc 3 Let it grow, become bummed, but hey it happens, (Had Disc 2 skip on 5/5/77 only other skip).... Send email to Dr. Rhino. Get auto response, busy get back in 5 days.... November 6th fill out form, glad i can find my order number...... November 13th "We will send out new disc allow 2 to 4 weeks to arrive........ December 5th "Sitting here in Limbo, but I know it Won't be Long"

..or does it read better as Lyceun Rum. 5/24 is a truly underrated show, as are so many from that magical tour. It has become my favorite stepchild, with a few close seconds like Lille, Munich and well.. so many others.

The Lyceum Run to my ears is a high water mark for the band. Like an exclamation point at end of a the sentence describing ones most exciting accomplishments. What a four show sequence and it has to be listened in it's entirety to understand how magnificent a run it was. Bickershaw might be the best stand-alone and The Lyceum the best run from the tour.

I guess the same could be true of other runs in their career, but.... that doesn't make it untrue. 5/24 might not be the best, but don't let that dissuade you from turning it up and enjoying the ride..

The second set takes on many forms and is quite compelling containing some brilliant passages, especially in TOO sequence. Powerful, explosive, atonal, pensive, passive, offensive and emotive at times. ..but don't overlook the first set. Right from the start it rocks and contains some of my more liked versions of China>Rider and PITB. Magically delicious.

It's been a while since I listened to the whole tour in sequence (well.. since Fall 2011>Winter 2012). I plan to do this in the spring.

Hello Marye, I recently moved and when tracking delivery for Dave's 28 it showed it was delivered. I initially thought this was the fault of the post office, however after a little investigation it appears I forgot to notify dead.net about the address change and it was passed to point at which my mail was being forwarded. I waited, hoping my old mailman would take cafe of it but it certainly appears he did not. I've been very busy with the move and work so I haven't had a chance to address this in any way. I was just wondering if it was too late or if it was possible it was returned and is being held at Rhino or GDM. I 'm aware this is a completely self induced dilemma but I just thought I would reach out. Thank you

Sssh I think we're alone now. Ok go.
1. Maggot Brain is as good an album as ever made but always overlooked. Why is that?

2. English rock and roll bands need to be heavily influenced by American music to get on my playlist. Eric Clapton. Stones. Beatles. Led Zeppelin. Ten Years After. John Mayall.

3. King Crimson couldn't play Johnny B. Good to save their lives.

4. Imagine by John Lennon is really awful. Most over rated song in history.

5. The Dali Lama is nothing more than Tibetan Buddhism's Pope. Think about it.

6. If Jim Morrison was ugly no one would have ever heard of The Doors.

7. Jerry Garcia is McCoy Tyner's right hand and Bob Weir is McCoy Tyner's left hand. It's uncanny how that so works.

I overlooked Maggot Brain till a year or so ago, but the problem has been corrected. The title song was a revelation first time that I heard it, deeply gratifying. Now that you mentioned it, I feel like I am due for another listen.

Glad the comments here alerted me to the upcoming Jorma and Jack release. Had the chance to see them in the mid to late '80s in Poughkeepsie, NY at the Chance. Cool show, cool venue - the Chance was an old opera house. There are times when some Hot Tuna really hits the spot.

Possibly true that King Crimson can't play Johnny B. Good(e). But they can play something else. And I don't mean the Eddie Cochran song.

Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow was a great Funkadelic track, off the album of the same name. I haven't heard it-or them-for years-but I have just given it a spin. Still sounds seriously groovy-out there with attitude.

The Mothership Connection 1976

A fine DVD and only $9.99 at various online sellers.

I recommend you obtain one as a stocking stuffer for yourself.

Get on up
Stay on the scene... yeah, James Brown hits the spot for sure. Currently listening to my Funk Box collection with faux red velvet cover, track 1, disc 1 - Get Up, James Brown. If you dig some funk and soul, the Funk Box may be for you, a definite mood lifter. Can't get enough of Express Yourself by Charles Wright, and when Aretha busts out Rock Steady, the big speakers just come alive with that bass line. Something different after listening to American Beauty earlier this evening.

On BluRay audio.

Picked it up recently, just put it in the player, watched the bonus video, then went to the audio and jumped to No Quarter.
WOW!!!!
Sounds amazing!!!

Edit:
This is a new audio remix, released in 2018.
Says: “Blu-Ray mixed from the original multitracks”.
