Dave's Picks Volume 28: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 6/17/76

This year's Dave's Picks series comes to a close just as the band's getting back together again in '76. By the time the Grateful Dead hit New Jersey’s Capitol Theatre - for the very first time - on 6/17/76, they were buzzing from their reunion, armed with new and revived material, the Rhythm Devils reformed with the mischievous Mickey Hart once again behind the kit. They'd skived off the unwieldy Wall of Sound and scaled back the venues from cavernous arenas to intimate theatres. Quite the treat!

During the first set, the Dead's playing was nuanced ("Cold Rain And Snow"), detailed ("Looks Like Rain"), and intricate ("The Music Never Stopped"); the singing struck softly ("Row Jimmy") and raised hairs ("Ship Of Fools"). But it’s the big barreling energy of the second set you’ll want to brace yourself for, replete with a disco'd "Dancing In The Streets," a low-down funky “Help”>”Slip”>”Franklin's” and a wind 'em up to wind down "Let It Grow">"Wharf Rat">"Around and Around." Can you keep up? There's only one way to find out.

This complete show, balanced out with a couple of bonus tracks from 6/23/76 and 6/28/76, was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 28 is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Grab a copy before they're gone, gone, gone.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

thanks for the response, good to know that I am not the only one who has received the return form. I have read that many have gotten replacements in the past, did they have to return their discs? how much did it cost to do so if they did? what good is a faulty skipping disc to rhino and why would they want it back? just to make sure that I'm not lying? Hey Rhino, the customer is ALWAYS right. period.

When my GDM shipments arrive the same form is in my package. As I have never asked for replacements, I think the form goes with all packages and is not directed towards specific customers.
Now that I have had skips in my last two GDM products (one bought via Amazon), I think I will be contacting MaryE/DrRhino on future problems!

I have read for years on these threads about the propensity of this organization to completely fuck up accomodating address changes that have been submitted by customers. My 2019 DaP sub was placed with a new "ship to" address since I am moving in Jan/Feb. I am thinking I may never see any of my DaP2019 sub!

Had to log out of Dead.net day before yesterday due to computer sluggishness. Had been leaving computer awake and logged in to Dead.net to avoid having to do the via-email login procedure. Doing so eventually rendered my browser (FireFox on a Macbook) too sluggish to use calmly. Logging in today required the via-email process, despite my now having created and supposedly saved three differerent passwords!

Can anyone FIX Dead.net/GDM? Will anyone?

When you send a PM to someone, it shows up in your inbox, but the From is from you.. if I were to send you a message right after that.. it would show up in your Inbox, but it would be from me (MDJim).

when you say they refunded you your money on the PNW skipping discs, was the refund for the entire box? a percentage of the box? just interested in how rhino is handling these problems and what you had to do to get replacements. Since my dissatisfaction with 10 discs in the E72 box, the subsequent 1 year wait for replacements and my very vocal statements on quality from Rhino, I have received with every purchase since a "return label" that states I must enter a quantity in the RTN QTY box and select one of the return reason code numbers in the RTN CODE box next to each of the items I am returning. Did you have to send back your faulty discs? It also states that I am responsible for all return shipping costs and original shipping and handling fees are non refundable. Did you get one of these forms with your purchase? Did you fill out this form and return it with your faulty discs? How much was the shipping costs if you did return discs? Am I being singled out with these labels? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks for any information that you can pass on to us all.

But I've just checked to see if I've had a reply, and it seems I just sent the message to myself. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Everything, by the looks of things!

OK...here goes. I recently moved across the country and had my mail forwarded. So far everything of any importance has made it's way east to my new domicile. Not so with Dave's 28. It has been returned to sender. I have contacted "customer service" and informed them of the details of my delima, including my new mailing address.
The response? "Uhhhh...we're sorry but you're stuff has already been readdressed(to the old PO Box,not the new address) and not even shipped out yet,but we can't change anything so if you don't get it this time we'll just refund your money."
So as a loyal customer & loyal subscriber you folks are basically telling me you are not willing to send me something I've already paid for?
Probably had defects anyway from what I can gather with the comments. On the heels of a goofed-up PNW '73~'74 Box that I still have had no satisfaction with. Customer service my ass.
I already regret sending hard earned $ for the 2019 sub. Will you honor that subscription or just wing it with no concern for your loyal fans.

Jeez...I don't know whats going on over there between you & Rhino but it ain't good.
    A very befuddled ex customer.

first appeared on Dave's 20. Is there a way to research how much rhino could be saving by not having these discs made in America? How much could it be and is it worth having to replace multiple badly pressed discs? Does rhino really not care about customer service or putting out the best possible merchandise that can be made?
Remember back in the day when all Grateful Dead products were proudly made in the USA? It really wasn't that long ago was it?
I have several Dave's picks that have not been opened, should I be worried? What if when they are opened and if they contain flaws will I have a path to replacements?
I never thought I would ever have to think about these things, but with all this talk of faulty discs, it sure does make one think.

Jerry's finger...

(but that was an accident...)

I know people have had branding done.

just leave my body alone. it becomes more and more like a rusty Swiss Army knife every day when I stand up.

maybe the new, new trend will be be skin grafting animal furs onto entertainers' bodies.

My best branding stories involve members of the black fraternity that use the omega symbol. The members I worked with branded the omega symbol on their arms. One guy had a good 1/4 inch rise to the scar from where it was held extra long. Another guy had like 6 light ones, said they were all drunk and the guys kept trying to do his better!

As for fur, I'd would look good with some chinchilla epaulettes!

Bassist Lorna has passed on.

Y'all be cool, Lorna.

So in the spirit of St. Sixtus.. I decided to stream tonight's Dead & Company show in Mexico.. cracked a Sierra Nevada IPL and have a little Insolente Extra Anejo to get in the spirit. No pressure to start my day at the crack of dawn tomorrow.. so why not.

Edit: One more anejo.. a fresh hop double IPA. Great second opener.. China>Cumberland>Rider>Terrapin>Drums as the snow begins to fall hard. Time for a safety meeting.

My Motown box is indeed Hitsville USA. Looking through my collection, it appears that I do not have the Stax sets. Even though I have some CDs from some of those Stax artists, I will certainly be picking up those Stax discs.

Thirty Treats Around the Sun--the 1967 is probably the best thing I've ever heard, and I loved many of the shows from 1979-on. I very much appreciate getting releases from all the eras. It's all the same music we love, just presented in different packages. And there is one "classic" era that people swear by that does nothing for me. To each her/his own, although I would not mind if some Dave's Picks had non-skeleton art . . . :)

People can complain all they want about snow, but watching it come down while being burrowed away with some warm GD and choice beer is just as sweet as a back porch in July. Indubitably. Such are my weekend plans. DaP 23 McArthur on deck, and then January 20, 1979 from archive—a birthday show which includes a Dark Star (guess I’ll have to throw in some imperial with the beer selection).

Got very good seats for Bob & Don Was in NJ, both nights. Count Basie Theater in Red Bank only holds about 1500 people should be good. A quick in and out for the two.

On a totally unrelated note (as usual). Any gin drinkers out there? Especially British. Ever have Boodles? For the Brit's, how is this rated over there. Suppose to be a great "London" gin. Most of my 60 years I never been much (if any) of a drinker. Maybe a year ago, I discovered Boodles and "Fever Tree Tonic Water"! Wow. Maybe not a good thing, but I can put about 4-5 down a night at work. The tonic water is the BEST, period. Expensive, but good.

Gin is a very popular drink in England at the moment-I can remember going to a restaurant a few years ago at Christmas with some friends, and they had a staggering variety of different types available-very different from in the 1970s and 80, when it was regarded as a bit old fashioned.
I only actually drank it on one occasion, when I was about 19. I put away about a half-three quarters of a bottle in about 90 seconds. God knows why. I passed out almost immediately-and man, what headache the following day. Suffice to say, it took me a while to get the hang of this social drinking lark. But even when I had mastered it-gin remained a no go area.

Mine skips like you wouldn't believe starting at around 2'45". I even had the disc professionally buffed yesterday and it did not help! Sorry to trouble, but I know this is the right place to ask. Have a grateful day everyone.

My copy is good.. check your PM.

Gin.. the mention of the word reminds of the song Cold Gin, one of better early kiss songs. There is a big rise in small, craft distilleries here in the US too.. a friend had this small batch Gin, heavy in Rosemary I think.. that tasted quite nice.. but the aromatics were very strong. At least when I finished my breath was minty fresh. Last winter someone brought many, many bottles from some other small distiller to this backcountry ski area nearby.. they had these small glasses glued to the top of an old pair of skis and five or six people would have to drink at the same time.. (I don't recommend this).. but they were filled with some pretty high end tasty stuff.. and a few good gins, rye, etc. It made for quite the celebration, what we were celebrating??, I am not sure anyone can be sure but celebrated we did. I can't say I am a gin guy.. but the quality and flavor seemed a step up from what I am used to.

Probably not surprising to anyone who's grabbed their ankles while grabbing tix to D&Co 2019. The following were recently published by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation:

"A PUBLIC RELATIONS NIGHTMARE': TICKETMASTER RECRUITS PROS FOR SECRET SCALPER PROGRAM"
https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/a-public-relations-nightmare-ticketmas…

" 'I'M GETTING RIPPED OFF': A LOOK INSIDE TICKETMASTER'S PRICE-HIKING BAG OF TRICKS"
https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/ticketmaster-prices-scalpers-bruno-mar…
Key findings:
- Ticketmaster doesn't list every seat when a sale begins.
- Hikes prices mid-sale.
- Collects fees twice on tickets scalped on its site.

Bummer? Yes.
Surprising? No.
Miss Mail-order? Yes.
MISS JERRY? Always.

Amen Jeff..
Not one to admit to defeat, but the TicketShyster process and pricing left such a bad taste in my mouth the last few years I am not planning to attend any D&C shows this year. Screw em..

Comparing the ticketing process to bending over and grabbing your ankles.. priceless - gave me a my first chuckle of the day. Thanks for that.

I swear it looked like a store front. Wait, if there's just a little bit of the traffic light in the square under the main one, do we click it? Impossible on a cell phone. And then as I wrote this I just got another 12 in a row. Fire hydrants traffic lights bicycles crosswalks stairs traffic lights again traffic lights again. I'm completely tired of this. That's okay I was only coming to post about the Ticketmaster debacle. Tired of them too. It's the beginning of the end for the middle class. More crosswalks in fire hydrants. Take care all.

Shot ski.
A lot of old skis get thrown in the trash, a few lucky ones get to retire with shot glasses glued to them. Some also get turned into furniture.

Numerous reCRAPTCHA exams doesn’t mean that you failed the previous one, you are actually being used to help program AI. Which is ironic because eventually the AI will be able to crack the reCRAPTCHA process.

Can we use AI to beat the crooks at Ticketbastard?
Not likely.

The big difference is that we didn't have to email Dr. Rhino or Marye for a replacement disc we all just had them sent.... hoping for more rain than snow here in R.I. tonight!!! RMD, I received replacements for discs 1 and 3 of DaP28 and both have skips in new places. Sent an email to Dr. Rhino and the response apologized and indicated that the issue had been passed on to the manufacturing/product team for review given the "severity of the situation" and indicated that they will keep me updated regarding the replacement.

Sounds to me like they are still having a large number of defects in the replacement discs and are still working on fixing the problem. I am reassured they are working on it, but also concerned that if they don't sort this out right quick a bunch of us may end up with defective discs in DaP29. Whatever facility they are using to produce the discs now seems to have some real quality control issues.

Got 1 of my 2 DaP28 CD 3’s, the second one never showed up.
The one I got also was defective.
It would seem that they just sent out the production excess, rather than actually fixing the problem and manufacturing new CD’s.
I can envision the board room meeting at Rhino: “Those idiot Dead Heads will buy everything we put out, they’ll even pay us in advance. We don’t even have to make a quality product. Ha, ha, ha. Just send them defective replacements so that we can get them out of the warehouse. Eventually they’ll just give up trying to get what they paid for.”

And the rich man in his summer home
Singing just leave well enough alone

This must be hugely embarrassing for Rhino. Unbelievable.. they seem incapable of getting out in front of this problem.

On the bright side.. after moments of internal doubt and a correct click of the mouse it appears I am in fact not a robot.

Uh oh.. a tragedy of sorts has ensued, my click has timed out putting me back into the suspected robot category. A second successful click and I am again not a robot.

Whew.. tragedy narrowly averted. I plan to celebrate by doing something very unrobot-like..

And Shhhwwwwiiiinnnggg!

Main reason I came outta the weeds, to celebrate my 40th anniversary.
First show was 1/20/1979.

Oh-oh what I want to know-oh,
Where does the time go?

Still cannot believe it’s been that long, yet-gads.
All our stuff is still in storage, especially my music server :( but I had to celebrate so connected the iPad to the one tv I have leaning up against a wall (for audio) and checked out 1/20/79. Also 1/10/79, hadn’t heard all that one before, great second set... still think 1/20 (fits on 2 discs with editing), and most of 1/10 #2 would make interesting but different Dave’s...
Anywho, felt I had to formally acknowledge one of the best days of my life!
Wooo-hooo, here’s to 40, er a, 30?, 20? more Gateful Years.
Come on boys, step up the releases!

Happy 40th Anniversary! I am sure it would have been great to see shows back in those days. My first, June 25,1986 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. It was Dylan, the Dead and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
The sound was awful in the Dome for concerts. Two days later we were on our way to Alpine. Within two weeks, Jerry slipped into a coma. Back in those days, we didn't know if we would ever see the band again. You know the rest of the story. What a run after that!
And I agree we need more releases. We are not getting enough new product, time to step it up.
I would love to see that Fall 80 box. Did you make it to any of those shows?

Nice compact set II tape. It fit on a 60 minute tape for me. Check out this jam: Playing>UJB>Drumz>China Doll>Playing>GDTRFB>Lovelight. Can't remember if the double encore of Sat. NIte>Baby Blue fit on the tape or not.

https://archive.org/details/gd86-06-28.sbd.miller.21272.sbeok.shnf

Although Alpine '85 night 2 I like a bit better. For the fidelity of the tape I had, but I think overall may have been a better show.

Just keep skipping, skipping, skipping, just keep skipping. Yes, my replacement discs also have skips in the same exact spot, you can see a raised dot, like a period made by a pencil, on the disc. Now, how can you not see this and yet, it was still sent out as a replacement. Rhino has no quality control, at least with this release. When will it end? The dangers of blind faith.

I haven't received my replacement discs yet, but its beginning to look as though Rhino are no longer fit for purpose. Maybe time to go elsewhere. I think if I'd messed up this often in my job I'd have been sacked.

Deadvikes, thanks!
40 seems like a big deal to me, but when you think of how many folks here (or used to be here) can add ten years to that....
Those 86 Alpine shows we’re our first time there. Don’t remember the shows so much, but man did we have fun.
Camped out next to the woods in that adjacent lot. Traveling with a blind dude and seeing eye dog....
Saw Alpine through Buffalo that tour. Think I recall liking Alpine, felt Riverbend was one of the best I had been at up to that point. Those riverboats coinciding with the songs at just the right time, still gives me goose bumps. The fireworks after in the lot too, voooohooo, kinda how I was feeling at the time 😎
Buffalo was great, don’t recall much of Akron? Don’t recall liking that one very much. Remeber Dylan came out in the first set to jam, but it didn’t seem to mesh well. Have only heard a few shows from 86 though, so need to check all that out someday.....so many shows, so little time!

Stoltzy: great Irish like GD blessing! 70 box, or 69 might be good guess. Either would be awesome!
Like Jim said, wouldn’t mind a Summer 85, especially that 6/30, or Hershey, or Toga!
Of course that brings up the whole tape/source issue? Thought the Riverbend 85 was decent release, so maybe there’s hope? Know many don’t like those years, but many others would really dig a summer 85 release/Box, something!
Remember a great homemade shirt in Hershey, said ‘I lost my shit in Hershey” which I kinda did LOL!
Right when they hit “ashes, ashes all fall down” I basically had to slump down in the mud right in front of the soundboard and lay down for a bit, so my friends and Healy all had a good laugh at that!
Perhaps culmative effect from several fungal days in a row, a whole sixer of elephant beer, and not much food? Nahhhh, must a been the weather! 😎
