    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

    At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever!     i'm very happy to know that somebody is enjoying to listen to the Europe 1972 Box. i'm not so lucky, because i'm still waiting for my box to arrive. i hope i didn't lose my money.

    Seeing as Emmy is for TV, um, no. But a Grammy would have been nice. Seriously, what limited edition package or box set could beat this? There's been a lot of griping, but I love toting my steamer trunk around the house by the handle. Feels like I'm going on a trip, and I am! In fact, I think I'll grab that thing right now and delve into Show #20 (the second of four Lyceum shows). It has taken me since September to reach this point on the tour. Maybe I have been savoring the box a little. Each show has so many moments of sublime musical goodness that I don't want to rush it. I'm still burned about the audio quality of the first 10 shows, but that doesn't mean I won't return to those over and over again.

    Not surprised. That music is 40 years old. Isn't the Emmy supposed to be for new music? I don't know. The GD is such a niche market that not gaining popular acclaim is hardly surprising. Digipaks for the masses.

I think the initial beef was the box set being the same exact price without the extras but in the end i'd rather have the music, than not have the music because your not getting an elaborate book or some souvenir type tickets and perhaps a road map...i guess the 1972 disc is tossed they said it'll be there without overdubs when possible in the article, maybe it wasn't meant in the context that the title Europe 72 won't be there but the shows in which they were taken will be from that...and without overdubs...i was never big on overdubs i kind of like hearing mistakes, they didn't make many mistakes maybe sections they didn't want heard on a commercial release more like...i was never bugged by a nuance...but obviously this has alot of people excited in one way or another...and money comes and money goes...even though the economy is bad hopefully we'll all be able to save 450$ in 7 or so months, roughly 65$ a month...and there won't be another boxset released by them this year, you'll get those "road trips" and maybe, just maybe a vault type release on rhino...but Europe 72 will be like reaching heaven without being dead...i know we all felt this way before with other releases and i'm very happy with alot of the past releases even to this day...i thought the New York fillmore comp was the best thing i ever heard and to this day that's still partly true...as more items have been added to that list.

300% mark-up for a book On February 1st, 2011 Nicholas Newgarden said: Hopefully the GD powers that be, and the folks who put the book together, will realize that this is not a theater with a limited seating capacity. Why not let the box owners have their hard-bound collector first editions and print a softcover version for sale to the masses? Sounds like a nice solution to me. Box buyers will have their sacred, one-of-7,200 fetish item, and the rest of us would have the mass-market paperback version. I remember fondly--too many moon ago--when I got a softcover copy of the Grushkin's "Book of the Deadheads." You don't need the first hardcover edition to enjoy the content. @Nicholas Then why do you care? If you don't need the limited edition to enjoy the content, then why do you care if there's a softcover version? For that matter, wouldn't anyone in their right mind consider the current "music-only" edition to be the softcover version? All you really need is a digital file, a download of everything sans bling. Voila! Softcover version. So, I say again, why do you care? ================================== When all else fails, success is all that's left.

Nicholas made a fair statement...450$ for 7,200 fans/sellers will include 22 shows and a book, a map, perhaps some replica tickets...maybe if they do decide which isn't official yet they will sell the 22 shows for 450$ and nothing else...so he has a point...but at this point i wouldn't pass it by i could live with just the shows...i don't think it's a great deal but i can live with it because i do love this era to super human proportions...so i really don't think Nicholas made this absurd or outlandish remark, it was a very fair statement...i guess it'll take 1 or 2 months before the just music box becomes official or not...they could change their minds on their thinking...they could also say orders will be taken after the 7,200 is released in september and then in october they could take orders...or not at all...they could decide they'll want to keep it limited so the sellers can make a killing on Ebay...i'm sure there's some that ordered 10 box sets for that purpose and it wouldn't be fair to them if everyone can purchase this set...i'm not one who was fortunate enough to purchase one as i missed it by 2 days...i'm being sarcastic i think they should nix the price gaugers by making the music available to anyone who wants to buy one...minus the book and extras...i can see that to a point.

From my credit card this morning. See, it does work! We're getting close to the end of the "use it or lose" grace period on the codes, so there's still a chance yet for the boxed-out hopeful. I suspect that the music-only stuff won't start clearing before then. And like those concerts where a block of tickets to a "sold-out" show get released the day of the show, I suspect that there will be more than a handful of declined credit cards come Sept, freeing up still more boxes for those hanging on and holding out for a real miracle. To echo Mr Badger, take a moment to donate to Rex, boxholders or not.

I didn't really know anything about Rex, but since I found out what projects they're supporting (including one of my pet favorites, EFF), all described at their site -- I knew I had to do now what I should've been doing all along! Don't remember whose idea that was in this thread, but Thank You and thanks others for the gentle reminders.

Although the Dead may be the quintessential American band, do not forget that they also were, in fact, American. They toured in the US a lot, but they did not actually tour the world in the way the Stones or Led Zeppelin did in the '70's. Also, I think it may be a somewhat American Deadhead phenomenon to actually follow the Dead during one of their tours across the States: you simply had to be there to be able to do it! I know they've been to Europ a few times as I have a DP from London and a cdr from Melkweg (Milky way) in Amsterdam October 16 1981 (acoustic 1st set!), but on the whole, it was mostly the States. Although I'm strictly European (Dutch), some posters here may actually be US nationals living abroad. That said, I would expect more comments from European hippies, confessing their attendance during one of the shows. Finally, I'm proud to say that as far as I know the 2 Dutch concerts from 1972 (Amsterdam/Rotterdam) belong in the top 5. Had nothing to do with that though, as I was around 10 years at that time... On a different note: I've read the tread and I'm not quite sure if my music only option got aknowledged. I could not get through to order a box January 21, but after getting a receipt that basically converted my order into a music only set, I've heard nothing. Although this set seems not limited,I would like a confirmation of the actual order. But on the other hand, perhaps I'm on a waiting list to get a box after February 5 and I only receive teh confirmation when it's clear that I moved up the list or not. Keeping my fingers crossed, silly really...

I confess, I was at Bickershaw, the Dead's only festival appearance of Europe 72. Although I have lived in Holland for years now, I was born and raised in England.By the way, do you happen to know where the Rotterdam show was played? It is always listed as being Rotterdam Civic Hall, a venue that does not - and has never - existed. My money is on "De Doelen" but nobody really seems to know.

There are many euroheads, but most of them stick to online groups over here in Europe (mainly Eurotraders) and do not get too involved in dead.net. By and large we have sorted out our Europe '72 box set problems between ourselves. Many of us knew what was going to happen by the Tuesday of the big week, we shared info, shared codes, and most seem to have got what they wanted without jumping into the bearpit that is this forum. I guess it's a cultural thing and as Roland says, reflects our experience. We had to wait for years between visits and tours: 1970 ( 1 show), 1971(1 show) and tours in 72, 74, 81 (twice) and 90. Cancelled shows in 76 and 78. That's it. A visit from the Dead, a new release or a single tape sent by a contact in the USA was a real treat. Expectations are pretty low and patience necessarily very high :-)

Nicholas not sure to make of your response on the Grateful Dead going on their own label...do you think it was just for them to make money or to have artistic freedom? I think it's a 50/50 give in take especially in those days...today it's out of hand on the label's part or the major label's part...i personally knew a girl group from the early 2000s made 1 major label cd, hit the top 5 spot and appeared on 3 national TV shows and were still released from the label...probably due to the fact they didn't make enough $$$ for the label...then everyone says oh there's not any good young acts out there...how can there be if not too many are allowed to develop...we all laugh at Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, i guess Taylor Swift (we don't laugh) and Justin Bieber but they sell 2-8M cds a year for each release...not Dead related i know, probably not too many dead fans have a spears CD...my point being not enough exerimentation in music...it seems alot of Dead fans like Phish...i never really heard Phish except on you tube...the dead had drugs i guess but they were productive and there's probably a big difference in soft drugs such as marijuana as opposed to heroin...Pig pen died due to liver problems from drinking too much, but no one really had a problem with pig pen...far as my heroin neighbor he's in hiding right now...i haven't seen him in weeks but i can hear him and he has other people in there with him...when it snows he doesn't shovel and he never has any garbage, he hasn't thrown out any garbage since early December...the last time i saw him about 2 weeks ago he looked thin and he was thin before the drug use...but also his coloring is amazingly white...i guess really placid looking...for all i know he could be off the stuff because how would he continue to get it when everything's gone from his house...he never puts on the lights and you don't see the flickering of light from a TV set anymore...i used to bang on his door looking for my money but i see it's a foolish and wasted cause...sure it hurts to lose 300$ but i've lost greater amounts at different times...hopefully you get wiser and you learn to trust people less...unfortunately the world is becoming a place where we can trust people less than ever before...from the politicians to your next door neighbor...employers they just want to get rid of you in a year so you don't get a raise, vacation time, sick pay, any other benefit you can think of...i'd recommend self-employment but alot easier said than done.

I'm just throwing this out as a point for discussion now, not making a firm decision to do this. I purchased the FW '69 10CD set almost immediately after it went up for sale (and got a serial number close to 10000 anyway, but whatever) and I have it, including the bonus disc. It's in pretty darn good shape, aside from a little wear on the outside box. I lent to it to a few friends, like in the old days. Now I have this thing, and it's been sitting on my shelf for quite a while. What would be your reaction if I were to offer to trade this set, which is selling for well over $450 as far as I know, for a music-only copy of E'72? I would not need a sealed copy, as my set is not sealed; in fact, I would almost prefer a set that has been examined and verified to contain all the discs to all the sets, as I had a problem with the FW box, getting two copies of one of the discs and needing to get a replacement. Any reaction to that? Any problems from the orthodox Deadheads about violating the spirit of whatever? Anybody gonna sue me? What do you think? Again, I haven't decided to do this, just talking at this point.

is a trade. I was thinking about doing the same with my FW'69 Box when the E'72 Box chaos commenced, but then I scored. Suerte, suerte, TheOtherJuan! On another note, Mr. Lemieux, I've been listening some to Steppin' Out and it seems it just could not sound better. Will the sound be improved on the E'72 Box and, if so, in what ways? I've read most of your posts, and I wonder.....why are you here? I mean, it's a free country, and you are well entitled to voice your opinion, but why here? I haven't seen anything positive come from you (unless I missed it), so are you just pissed about not getting on the waiting list or getting a code? Sure, I can feel your pain there, but I don't understand why you would expel so much energy for strictly negative blogs. Just my opinion, but I'm not sure how you get your info and "facts" either. Once again, our intrepid moderator has shined throughout this ordeal. She has helped souls with their orders, allowed a great amount of invective to be posted, and tried to answer some questions. At least she has the courage to post while we still have not received any cogent reasons from Rhino regarding their decision to limit the number of boxed sets. Again, is it contractual or purely economics driving their decisions. And why can't they fix their ordering system? Since successfully placing my order, I have begun saving my money in the "EUROPE 72 FUND." One of the ways I'm doing it is, as Dead.net told us, tap into the penny jar. Every penny or nickel I find lying on the street gets picked up and put into the jar. All change I make at the stationary store or the liquor store goes from my pocket into the jar. So a week or so later after placing the order, the jar is indeed starting to fill up. Once the jar gets filled I'll go to the bank and have the coins converted to large bills, preferably 50s or 100s. Then let the jar start to fill all over again. Come September I be ready when the "big drop" hits my bank account. I'll be financially covered!!

Simonrob, my cd cover reads Rotterdam Civic Hall as well, but I read somewhere that it is indeed De Doelen. TigerLily, I live in the south, near Roermond. The few concerts that I attend, String Cheese Incident 2004, Jackson Browne 2010, Roger Waters 2011, tend to be far away. Relatively speaking, that is, I could easily imagine myself following The Grateful Dead during a week long tour of the Netherlands if that had ever happened... I just want to posit that everybody has the right to sell almost any item they themselves bought legally. (Maybe not a prescription, a gun, some ivory, etc., but the exceptions are maybe interesting for other reasons.) A bicycle, a book, a car, a CD. You own it. You can sell it. You're not a bad person if you sell it. Any "orthodox Deadhead" who has a problem with this is just an orthodox a$$. If you bought the Fillmore box and no longer care to have it, it's yours to dispose of, trade, or, yes, sell. You aren't depriving anyone of anything by selling it. I have been very lucky in that the few Road Trips discs for which I didn't get the bonus disc from dead.net, I was able to find them on eBay. I was happy to pay the fair, going price for the out-of-print item. I no more felt scalped or robbed than if it had been a 1st-edition Faulkner novel I was looking for. It's actually interesting to compare the eBay hype and the reality. Exactly how many completed sales of this box set will there be on eBay between when it first was offered and when it gets shipped in September? So far, a whopping 8 copies have sold. I continue to watch, because it's a good reality check. You've got to be careful about the prices, too. Same as Strider_88 sez about the ones on offer, most of the completed sales were "Best Offer" sales, which means the price shown is probably the maximum the copy went for -- experience negotiating a "Best Offer" (on a teak desk, if it matters) is that the accepted price is often lower than what is seen when reviewing the eBay completed listings -- only the buyer and seller really know. Nevertheless, it seems the price trend on the E'72 box is down: on the 24th and 25th of January the first two copies sold on eBay went for, at the most, $1,250 each. The most recent sales appear to have been at "only" $800, maybe lower. So now, level the accusation that I must be a seller of one of these boxes. I can't prove I'm not, so do you have the ethical high ground?

Thanks for the info. The only other realistic possibility would be the "Ahoy", the sport- and congress centre but even someone over-indulging in the legal delights of Holland in '72 would be unlikely to mistake that for a civic hall.Roermond, he, Ik woon in Maassluis.

You are right, if you have legally purchased a CD you are entitled to resell whenever and for whatever amount you wish. However, if you keep a copy of the CD after selling it then that is illegal. The only rightful owner of that CD is the person you sold it to, you relinquished your rights to it when you received money for it. But I'm sure that's what you meant, right?

Hi! I’m a UK Deadhead and keen collector. Sadly, I missed the offer of the Europe 72 Complete Recordings Box set (my kids have been monopolising the PC since Christmas revising for their exams), so was disappointed. I did reserve a copy of the ‘music only’ version, but the temptation of going on to eBay in September and getting scalped trying to bid for a Box set will be hard to resist. However…. A good mate of mine and fellow Deadhead rang to ask if I’d had any luck with securing a copy, commiserated and then, in order to help me out, offered to return his Christmas present of a few years ago… The Fillmore West 1969 Complete Recordings. He admitted he had previously got it for himself and didn’t like to tell me. The thing is, this is in mint condition, still factory sealed and includes the bonus disc. He left it with at the weekend. It’s apparent from these threads that a number of you didn’t get a copy of this earlier limited edition release which, I’m sure you’re aware, is fetching stupid money on eBay at the moment. Like many, I’m disappointed at the naked profiteering that appears to be bubbling under with this latest limited edition release (and I do hope that lessons will be learnt back at Dead.net HQ). So, and in the spirit of whatever it was that made us Deadheads in the first place, here’s the offer… Instead of scalping each other on eBay, I’m offering the above mint The Fillmore West 1969 Complete Recordings inc Bonus disc (Serial No. 5492 of 10,000) in exchange for one of the personalized Europe 72 Complete Recordings Box sets (I gather its possible still to change the wording if I don’t like it). That would make for 2 happy Deadheads who haven’t had to burn up each others’ credit cards plugging holes in their collections. No rrot, I do not have the ethical high ground.Never the less, looking into this closer I found out that sellers on e-bay need to have the product in hand to be able to sell it.That would be the ethical rub on the situation.High prices,double or triple are not illegal just ugly. Dead-net and e-bay are looking into the situation. So e-bay sellers of the Europe 72 box set, might not be a good idea to spend the money quite yet. So much for my two pesos of opinion.

All i know is i saw it on EBAY for $1099 ...and if you saw it on sale for 450$ it probably means a scam...if you think about it you only have 3 months to get a refund on a purchase...starting in 1 month...after the 90th day your no longer eligible for a refund...you can give a negative review but big deal your out of 450$...i can read Nicholas pain...no book, no replica ticket, no map or GPS unit...oh wait it was 1972 they didn't have those then maybe in Europe they did?? Seriously folks i too was hurt but i looked at myself in the mirror and said the most important thing is the music...and i really loved the music from that tour and tours all around that period...love the 1969 set at the filmore...love the winterland set...and the other one from upstate NY a few christmas(es) ago...and like everyone else am unbelievably looking forward to this release and i'm glad it's promised to be available to anyone who wants to pay the $$$ to get it...and I like everyone else will figure it out...the economies bad, everything else is bad, but i'll figure out how to pay for this box set i'll tell you that much...i think everyone went overboard on nicholas comments it wasn't like he was anti-grateful just hurt he missed out on the initial...i was hurt too, but you get over it when you look in the mirror and realize what you have to do...and that's wait for the codes to be sent for the music only version which hasn't happend yet and maybe not for 1-2 months as i'm sure alot hasn't been decided yet...i do know the whole thinking of this boxset was totally wrong or miscalculated...if you read the 1st posts it seems people weren't sure they'd sell 3,000 nevermind 7,200...now they're probably thinking they could sell 20,000...at least that...if they sold 7200 in 4 days...how many in 200 days?? At least 20,000...80,000 wouldn't shock me...and i say that with the price in mind as the music is that good, i'm not kidding...it really is that good...this isn't hit and miss stuff this was truly an amazing tour.

is EXACTLY what I meant when I said "no longer care to have it.". Your clarification is apt and welcome. I'm sure I don't detect a hint of sarcasm in your question, but that is precisely what I meant. Hey now, Strider 88, I was asking about the ethical high ground w/r/t someone who might accuse me of eBay "profiteering" just because I mount a defense of selling things one owns. Not accusing you of anything. As far as I know, you aren't saying anything like that about me, are you? I'm right there with you man, eBay sellers need to abide by eBay's Terms and Conditions -- but that's for eBay to sort out. I don't know eBay's rules and I'm not going to look them up, because they don't affect me. Someone previously posted that they had had some success in convincing eBay that some of these auctions were in violation. I won't be sorry to see them disappear. But I also know they'll be back, either when they figure a workaround on the T&C, or after September when dead.net ship. And at that point, who will be able to say that someone auctioning a set is a profiteer and who is someone like mikebrown1's friend, who's merely unloading an inadvertent duplicate? And who will care? And who will p!ss and moan?

@rrot Don't forget the fact that prices could change drastically between now and Sept. so that the box set will end up being MORE valuable/pricey then it is now. Anything's possible. People could actually be getting a better deal now at $800-$900 then later. On the flip side, you could also be paying more now then Sept, but I doubt it. ================================== When all else fails, success is all that's left.

You are so right. I only wish you'd say "_one_ could be getting a better deal" -- when you say "you" it almost seems you could be talking to me, but I've got my one, personalized copy order in and I don't need another. But yes, we don't know what'll happen to "secondary market" prices. I would have thought they'd be driven down by the availability of the music-only set. Just like I'd expect a reissue of Fillmore West to pull the rug from under the going prices on that set. But I think your point should be well taken, the people selling (or trying to sell) these on eBay today are speculating speculators who may well get burned. We can hope so anyway.
