    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

    At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever!     lucky those who can enjoy the box
    i'm very happy to know that somebody is enjoying to listen to the Europe 1972 Box. i'm not so lucky, because i'm still waiting for my box to arrive. i hope i didn't lose my money.

    Seeing as Emmy is for TV, um, no. But a Grammy would have been nice. Seriously, what limited edition package or box set could beat this? There's been a lot of griping, but I love toting my steamer trunk around the house by the handle. Feels like I'm going on a trip, and I am! In fact, I think I'll grab that thing right now and delve into Show #20 (the second of four Lyceum shows). It has taken me since September to reach this point on the tour. Maybe I have been savoring the box a little. Each show has so many moments of sublime musical goodness that I don't want to rush it. I'm still burned about the audio quality of the first 10 shows, but that doesn't mean I won't return to those over and over again.

    Not surprised. That music is 40 years old. Isn't the Emmy supposed to be for new music? I don't know. The GD is such a niche market that not gaining popular acclaim is hardly surprising. Digipaks for the masses.

Actually I don't think some of the overdubs are that bad, works wonders for the vocals. Instrument overdubs on the other hand are a blasphemy if you ask me. I think if you listen to E72 Truckin' closely enough, there are THREE guitars, that is just wrong if you ask me.

it did say they dropped the overdubs so it can mean A) it's going to be in there...or B) it could mean the tracks will be there but in the rightful concert show...it would be nice but it doesn't make sense that they would include the Europe 72 release seperately...unless i missed that spot where it does absolutely say it'll be included, i did read where the overdubs will be dropped as a fact...and 99% of us probably have Europe 72 am i safe to say that? Does anyone here not have 100 year hall or Europe 72?

I read somewhere else that various harmony vocals were overdubbed due to the poor quality of the original recordings. Lets hope that Jeffrey Norman has worked more powerful magic than the Warner Bros. engineers could.

This from Wikipedia (where else) 'Although Europe '72 is billed as a live album, the songs featured on the release were subject to significant overdubs after the fact, specifically with respect to the lush harmony vocals. Unadulterated multitrack recordings of the performances used for the album are no longer available (because they were simply snipped from the multitrack concert tapes whereupon the band overdubbed directly onto them, destroying the originals) but, for example, the available two-track soundboard recording of the May 10, 1972 show indicates the band had not yet figured out the vocal arrangements for "He's Gone" that would later be overdubbed in the United States'

Destroying the master tapes by overdubbing directly onto them. Would anybody really do that? I have my doubts but all will undoubtedly be revealed in September. Surely the multitracks would still exist, albeit with the vocal tracks overdubbed. In that case, the instument tracks would still exist, but could one separate the original vocals from the instruments on the 2 track soundboards and add them to them multitrack instrument tracks? Ask Jeffrey.

No i think they have either another source and/or kept the master as is...why would you mess with the master/source...if they said original returned than they're probably meaning to say that or that is what they will do...the jury is out if it means a new europe 72 included or do they mean the songs from europe will return to their rightful show dates...you won't need a comp anymore if you have the complete shows from that tour right?? Am I right or wrong?? But yes the harmonies were great in germany i know...i'm going to look for that england comp i forgot about that one

Major Domo Billy Bojangles, sit down and have a drink with me I know I'm a bit late on this subject, but I'm glad this thread is moving away from all the bitchiness and moving towards a sensible subject. I'm with cosmicbadger regarding Tanglefoot, although I'm not sure whether he should have a favourite if he owns the brewery. It's like having a favourite son or daughter - it's not really the done thing. I'm going to have to pop into my local branch of Wal-Mart's UK sub to pick up a few bottles of Fursty Ferret this weekend especially as it's on a can't miss offer. I don't recall having tried this - that's not to say I haven't but you know how a good night at the pub can end up!!!!

Folks may be interested in seeing the promo poster that Warner Brothers put out to support the original Europe '72 release. I am most definitely NOT trying to get political here, but I find it fascinating that Hosni Mubarek was Vice President of the Arab Republic of Egypt when the Dead played the Pyramids in 1978. That was a long time ago. He got the President gig/title in 1981 when Anwar el Sadat was, uh, relieved of his duties. All things must pass, yes?

You'd think the dead would be more like a bunch of Pete Seeger's but interestingly they never got into politics...not even close come to think of it...i mean they liked folk, but were more into jazz i think...their music fused folk, jazz and countrish...with a dash of bluegrass...blues a little bit more than a dash especially in the pig years...definitely never too hard...they had a good band, much better live than their studio output would allow you to perceive...to see them live was a life altering experience...to listen to their records was another thing, sort of like only a small portion of the story.

Mona i thought you said that and then i saw jerry's name saying that...Nicholas are you saying that we already have alot of the 1972 european tour already>? and as capitalistic pigs we crave a new product that promises to be something better but won't be? I guess we do, so i guess we'll see alot of people surrendering their codes...one person was so kind to offer me his code for $$$$ but i thought i'll just wait for the all music offer...if it comes to it that is alot has been dead on that issue but it's way early for that, there's still 7 months to go...or is it 8 months? I figure it this way there's not much joy in life but the music and this will be my own personal yearly gift...i don't reckon they'll be alot of exciting releases this year anyway...i don't intend buying the new lady gaga cd/dvd when it comes out tempting as it seems...being a consumer isn't always easy...especially in an age when things are so tough and rough, there's alot i haven't got i'll admit that but nothing makes me feel more alive than the dead...the dead make me feel alive if that makes sense...how can the dead make you feel alive if they're called the dead? It's an oxy-moron as they say...at least they're grateful to be dead...now there's another oxy-moron now who would be grateful to be dead??? Nobody i know...does anyone know the exact release date of the Europe 1972 60 disc set?

I too am prepared to prostrate myself before any kind soul out there willing to offer me a code for the complete box set and will happily pay postage to UK + import duty (20%) + donation to the Rex Foundation. I know, its vast sums but "You can't take nothing with your but your soul: THINK!"Also, I'm still open to a trade on FW69 for the bells and whistles E72. See my posting on p176 for details. Send me a personal message if you're interested. I too never got the follow up ("within 72 hrs") confirmation of my reservation of the All the Music version. Have rang a couple of times today but no-one there. My nerves are stretched by all this and can't wait to see what the mysterious announcement at 11.59 PST is (which is 20.00 hrs here in the UK and in the middle of my eldest's 18th Birthday Party so I'm going to have to sneek off and log on). HERE IS WHAT MARYE WORTE: On February 3rd, 2011 marye said: as previous noted, currently assigned box set order codes that haven't been used will expire at 11:59 PST, Saturday, Feb. 5, and those codes will start being reassigned to people who tried to reserve and got on the waiting list--who have also been automatically enrolled on the list for the music-only/All the Music version (see link above). Nicholas. It's a DaVinci code. You will go all through Europe hunting down the LAST box. Better hurry, our friends in the UK have a jump on you. You may be able to catch up if you enlist the assistance of Tom Hanks. Nicholas Cages will also do since he has that kind if experience in the USA. And you could confuse people by having the same name. And our UK friends may get drunker quicker since thier beer is more powerful.

It appears that the personalization page has been shut down on the store section - so the link you have kindly offered isn't rocognised. It's after the deadline too. As you haven't taken up your option I guess that it will be passed to someone on the reserve list. Thanks anyway. This is like watching a lottery draw or some kind of reality show. Who's gonna win the prize? I sure hope someone gets to use that code. Maybe the end result will be the inevitable server overload, maybe there will be one very happy DeadHead. As for midnight announcements, don't hold your breath. I have seen nothing about an announcement, merely that the codes will no longer be valid and the reserve list will kick in.

I don't understand why TPTB don't update the clamoring fans (yup, the ones who pay their salaries), a bit more. I think what they need is another person to provide liaison between "us and them". Marye does a grate job doing what she does, but there's definitely a need for more info from the Rhino folks, and if it was on a regular basis, that would be much appreciated. Oh posting Gods, please let my spelling and grammar be just exactly perfect.

Every forum concerning releases has lots of posts which ask questions of Rhino and most voice genuine concerns or valid points. Answers from Rhino are very rare and it has always been that way. Most people cannot understand their reticence (or refusal) to divulge information or provide answers. As well as leaving people with a sense of frustration, some get the idea that Rhino just don't care. They do listen and they do give us (most of) what we ask for which suggests to me that they do care. As to why they never explain things here is something of a mystery. Certainly it is not good PR.

I finally logged on and bought some box set(s). That was a relief. I phoned Cal-Dead at the same time to ask a q, and heard Sugar Mag in the background: the song that initiated me in the GD. Apropos. Then, too many calls and a message service. I went ahead a bought it at 4:20, there was a long wait (30-45 seconds) and then home free! No meltdown and a confirmation! I was one of the lucky few I realize. I got one for my bro' and am willing to help another brother out if ya'll are interested. pm me if you would like a miracle.

There's also one song on the "Through the Years" CD that came with the Grateful Dead Scrapbook. Just to clarify - the "Weir Here" song is also on "Steppin ' Out". I think for future limited edition releases their should be a test based on what's been officially released before. That would reward those of us who have been prepared do whatever is required to purchase whatever is thrown at us whether or not we think it is what they should be releasing. If it comes out early september? January is gone...it's feb 5th...so it's no longer 8 months is it? I think we oughta count the days then come on here everyday and argue if it's good value or not...since 2 complete shows have been already released with 2 comps...anyway i bite the bullet and landed this...i don't reckon i'll buy too many cds this year anyway...and i know all the shows will be top quality so i'm not worried about that...and i don't advocate being rich i'm not rich by any means but music is important to me...the book is a nice addition but i'm mostly for the music but if i had the choice i'd go for the 5 course meal rather than the 1 course meal, if you know what i mean?

I don't think the dead sold out...they didn't get their own TV show? They didn't put on suits? Maybe some say they sold when they went to arenas as opposed to theatres and club like venues...maybe they were just accomating the fanbase...they didn't really put out hooky type music...although i'm not really that well familar with their later albums...i'm familar with their live shows until the end and the songs they chose to perform...i did get into their earlier albums but not things like shakedown street...and it's not to say they were bad because i never got into them...i don't buy that they sold out...even with the releases of dicks picks and this elaborate set...besides nobody holds a gun to anyone's head...you can easily say no to this and stick with what you already have...for me i know this is an ERA i loved by them, even in the days before this release i said to myself 1971-1972 was a great era because of the songs they covered...and now it's come almost to pass!
