DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, NEW YORK 1/2/70 captures the Grateful Dead as they make their first foray from the experimental 60s into their early 70s acoustic Americana period. Yes, this one is a little bit country and a little bit (psychedelic) rock and roll.

    When the "Magnificent Seven" - Pigpen on percussion, T.C. on keys - first took the stage on 1/2/70, evidence was clear that the trip was about to take a turn. From their western wears to the twang in Jerry’s “broken-string blues,” it appeared they'd brought the Bakersfield sound to the Big Apple. They worked through much of what would become Workingman's Dead, stunning the crowd with laid-back numbers like "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," and "Black Peter." Just the same, they satisfied 60s stalwarts with magical versions of "Dark Star," "St. Stephen," and "That's It For The Other One." Sonic alchemy, indeed!

    DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, ​New York 1/2/70 has been rounded out with a bit of 1/3/70 (the subscribers-only bonus disc features the bulk of 1/3/70). It was recorded by the great Owsley "Bear" Stanley and has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

    Keithfan I swear you come up with some of the funniest posts. I was listening to this box set with the family over for Memorial Day, and out comes this song. Everyone thought it was Jerry sounding like an amateur and I'm like no no! Listen to Jerry play slide here, and I put on LLR from 4/11/72!

    Had the house to myself this afternoon so I gave the 6/26/73 show from the PNW box a spin and had a chance to soak it all in from start to finish. Good stuff, '73 was really a peak year from my point of view. The Other One goes to all kinds of jazzy places in that show and the Brown Eyed Women and Deal really jumped out at me early in the show. But yeah, another release where disc 3 just smokes from start to finish. Kind of riding a wave of nostalgia and melancholia after an unexpected death in the extended family, someone I haven't seen or talked to in years but was close in age and with whom I had regular contact as a child. Seemed like a good afternoon for some dead.

    Keith of course you were. I haven't seen Bob breaking out the Coricidin bottle (slide, for those not in the know) on any Dead & Co. tours yet. Or playing "Looks Like Rain, Lazy Lightnin', Supplication," etc.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't catalogued every D&C show, but, I think we've been spared the agony so far.

    It seems like he kind of knows not to revisit certain things. Thank God.

    Still, this was always a band that went on, rain or shine, hungover, jonesing, tripping, whatever the malaise may be.

    They soldiered on bravely always, one with their audience. If ever a rock and roll band earned "the show must go on," with a gold star, it was the Grateful Dead.

    I try to explain to my friends how I got so deep into the Dead. I grew up on classic rock but got into metal and hard rock, and my best pals who were all with me in my formative years have largely not followed me into this music. It's Owsley's fault.

    I was at Alpine Valley, dosed on Gooney Bird, at Monsters of Rock. Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions and Van Halen/Hagar. Jesus Christ, if you're going to dose at a hard rock festival you're taking your sanity into your own hands. It all ended well, but the all kinds of crazy I witnessed and experienced that day will never leave me. Wonderful memories, to be sure, but nothing that needs repeating.

    So back to Owsley - first, with the acid. Although the 'Bird wasn't his, it was nice. It was his other habit - recording. Every Dead show, thousands, since the beginning. What we all pant and drool over daily on this forum waiting for the next Dick's - excuse me, Dave's - and box set, etc.

    Normal rock music, as much as I love the Stones, Beatles, Priest etc., I just know where it's going every time. With the Grateful Dead, and, I'll give them a little piece of this, Dead & Co., you never quite never know where it's going. It may be sloppy, it may be tight, certain bandmembers may be off or supremely on - different instruments and amps, effects, miking, etc. across the eras.

    It's always fresh. It's always about the Adventure of the Listen. Like jazz, but not. The Grateful Dead. Amen.

    Thanks for the well-wishes! Overall a solid, rocking show! I thought Set 1 was a bit stronger than set 2, but they brought the goods throughout. Prepping now for another go, and you know what they say... never miss a Sunday show, especially at Jerryweather!

    Robert H Weir, for the murder of Iko Iko with a slide guitar on July 5, 1978. On this day Mr. Weir did purposefully attack Iko with his unpolished blues style. Still brandishing the bottleneck slide device on his middle finger after the event, Weir surveyed it with a puzzled countenance and spoke aloud the conclusion that had already dawned on most witnesses that day: "This thing can be absolutely lethal in the wrong hands."

    It is a fact that Weir employs the unorthodox style of placing the slider on his middle finger instead of ring, a technique most commonly attributed to Joe Walsh. When asked to remark on a common asertion from fans that he shouldn't be "honing his craft" on a live stage, Weir smiled and displayed the device prominently on his extended middle finger: "f@#k the fans".

    The Phish in Charlotte

    Was indeed an amazing show. One of the top three I've seen by them, one of the other two was at the same venue in 2012, the other was at Merriweather back in 2000. The bass bombs were plentiful and penetrating, particularly one in the newer song Passing Through, which I actually heard earlier in the day and thought it sounded like The Bangles's Walk Like an Egyptian in the "we oh we oh"s, but live they ripped it. Phantastic night and Trey was really playing extremely well, hitting the notes he wanted, killer effects sounds, and he was having a blast. Jim, try to go to the Su day show, you can get tix in the lot for a decent price, you just have to poke around.

    Thanks to whoever posted that GQ article on sobriety recently. Trey was one of the interviewees, and, if any of you know Phish, you know he's got the gift of gab, but is not just a talker, but a thoughtful one, and his story is profound. I had given up on them in 2003 due to his sloppiness, which Rolling Stone had actually praised in their ranking of him around 75 on the greatest guiatrist list, saying he's even better when sloppy. I always found the 80s and early 90s stuff, particularly 1994, to be more engaging and mindblowing because he was so clean and precise in his solos and in jams. Well, we came to find out the root cause of the sloppiness was opioid dependency when he got busted. But as he said it changed his life, and the reason they've been so fruitful since the return in 2009 is his clearheadedness. Last night was an impressive display of an artist in full control of his medium, and it leads to better band cohesion. Well impressed, but seeing him like that after reading that article days before shed a different light on it.

    No real Dead content to add as I've been listening back to Phish to get into the right mindset, so last 5 is all Phish. Hoping Monday brings us exciting box news.

    I tried really hard to go to these shows.. one of my business partners and friends (from Pitt) is there.. but alas.. ticket prices were not advantageous and I haven't hopped that fence since I was in high school. (not that I am proud of that).. Well.. there was that one time in undergrad, but I cut the hell out of my hand. ..tale for another day perhaps..

    They would have been my first Phish shows. ..and the weather is spectacular for a weekend of music.

    Have fun Otis and GHan!!! So jealous.

18 hours into the selling out of #30, we have the usual comments on cover art (love it) upping the numbers (sure, whatever) and a juicy conversation on bonus content (it’s gonna be great). So the REALLY important discussion moves on to the Box Set. Have to admit, the PNW from last year has dropped in my rotation. I have a bit of buyer’s remorse as the design and art of the box are gorgeous, but I don’t sit and look at it. Here’s hoping for a lean, music focused set with a bit less flourish. Are we looking at a Greek anthology-5 shows from different runs over the years? Or maybe a midnight sun 80 mini box (called for many times over the years) or maybe Fall 80. What tours have not been heavily mined? I love Spring 71, but much of this ground has been covered. I just failed the robot test (again) time to go back to lurking.

If precedence is any indication on DP's best release throughout a given year, 1-2-70 will be the winner hands down. Anything from 1970 in an official release is always highly sought after to my already over-blown GD collection. This was also a decent period for singing. Dark*-Stephen-11-Lovelight, enough said, done. (TIFTOO bonus)

WELCOME BACK; glad to see so many folks drop in that we haven’t seen in a while, especially hippie chick picking up right where she left off.....how’s things from the other side? Now if only Bolo was feeling up for the party......and we hope Docs at least lurking?

VARIABLE FORMATS; am I the only one intrigued by Dave’s seaside carrot comments about this year seeing other formats etc? Does that mean different media, like video? or perhaps they’ve finally listened to us and are going to start different kinds of series besides Dave’s? Hurry up, some of us could die anyday now lol.
Perhaps like Kayak guy used to lobby for, or some of us are ready for lower shelf stuff so we can get the post reel stuff out? (In addition to the more formal, predominantly 70s reel to reel sources)......dammit, inquiring minds wanta know!

come on guys...out of stock/limited edition?? I know you want to move product fast, but this is standard corporate stuff...anyone can borrow a copy and download...I appreciated and still love the HDCD aspect of all Dead releases...(I have two ARCAM CD23 players)...If I cant buy from you HDCD, I will borrow from my buddy and import but will lose HDCD in the process. I would gladly pay the $30and get the HDCD vs free from friend. It ain't even 4/20 and this is sold out??...cmon...release another 20,000 and never get rid of HDCD..thanks

I'd love to see a '69 Box Set release to complement the Fillmore West box. Ideally the Ark shows or an Avalon-run anthology. But with this DaP 30 and the Aoxomoxoa 50th Avalon excerpts (2nd disc) I doubt we'll see that this year.

I'm thinking that it'll probably be a Brent-era box from '79 or '84

Rip 'n' burn doesn't mean you lose the HDCD encoding. Similarly the Download series were HDCD encoded. You could copy the file and it would still maintain the HDCD encoding. It is an integral part of the digital file and cannot be undone or lost. Luckily.

I've gotta say I kinda love the idea of Deadhead Captcha. It seems like some Head would have developed such a thing, especially given how many of us are in tech. If anybody has any info I'd love to hear it, though I have no idea what's going to turn out to work in real life...

Ouroborous, yes.. 4/19/82.. my first show. I had no idea what I was getting into and how it would change my life. So much fun and a wild night.

About a week and a half until the better part of two shows land in our mailboxes. I have to admit.. I have not done a deep dive into these two shows, they will almost be new to me.

Couldn't help myself. Pacific Northwest one was pretty good quality so I figured this would be to.

I haven't been this psyched up for a release in quite some time. And that's saying something because I was pretty stoked for the swing Auditorium show. I've been hoping for something like the Dick's Picks 16 set list for a while, like I forget who mentioned it, but it has a good mixture of the Primal dead and the new stuff. Am I as excited as hippychick? Yes I am. .... yes I am. Hippychick if you ever want to Rendezvous and listen to some records, I have a good collection.

Blew through Beatclub. Damn fine TOO, absolute highlight film material.

And now I'm up to Rockin' The Rhein. Definitely top 10 E72 for me, and my first Dark Star. DS part II has o once in a Deadtime jam that I enjoy quite an bit. One of the better PITB is here too. My favorite Sugar Magnolia, which is the song and version that reeled me into the Dead Zone for life. Wharf Rat is top 2.

Since it is the 50th anniversary of Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead and the Ark shows, I concur it is High Time to give those the Plangent and Norman treatments. And then I hope Dave's wording of multiple formats portends a video release of some sort, and that 2/28/69 is the November Black Friday release.

I ordered the cd of the Warfield, had a chance to snag the record, but figured the cd better suited me for this release, as I'd probably leave the vinyl sealed. But am looking forward to the cd, when it comes. Would've picked up at the record store, but he didn't get any copies of the cd, he tried ordering, but got shut out, too. I had no interest in the Sage and Spirit. The best thing about it, and motivating factor for everybody I heard from was the artwork, which is great, but the choices are odd, and to use one of the last Jack Straws that Bob sang lead solo on, when there are so many far superior versions from which to choose where Jerry sang lead as well. My only purchase ended up being The Ramones NYE 1979, which I have yet to open, but am looking forward to this sure to be explosive performance that was followed by a screening of the cult classic Rock n Roll High School featuring everybody's favorite punks. The show features Do You Wanna Dance the Bobby Freeman early rock hit that David Nelson and Sara Garcia both say Jerry played on, though wikipedia disuptes it as rumor. I'd think David Nelson and Jerry's first wife would have a good idea of that being a fact, probably hearing it from Jerry himself. The solo is nothing fancy at all, very rudimentary, but gets the job done like Luther Perkins on Folsom Prison Blues and many others, can't seeing Jerry just emptily bragging that he did that, since Johnny Ramone probably was able to copy it note for note on this show. Anyway, can't wait for a great chance to blast that in the living room. I'll be on my 10th listen of DaP 30 by then probably. :)

I liken speculation about incoming Dead releases to the NFL experience. Wake me when the regular season kicks off, and when the CD arrives in my mailbox. ....is making me wanting to bust out Thelma. Snagged that bonus disc tee, which in my opinion, is still the best cover art yet. Wore the hell out of it when new, so it's already showing signs of wear. Rarely bust it out these daze. On the fence with the DaP 30 tee. We'll see.... Happy 4.20 everyone. I rarely wake and bake, but may make an exception tomorrow.

Had to pull em off and pick-it up again today. That Jam out of Drums is pretty cool, into a short but great Hammond B3 heavy TOO.
- Sons of Champlin - Secret - Live from 2002 - high energy, great recording , Rooftop, Get High....love me some vibraphone solos , especially when enhanced! Mic Gillette (TOP) and Tom Saviano on horns
- PNW 5-17-74 Vancouver - great show - WOS is so frickin clean and clear - Loose Lucy is super funky, China-Rider, Truckin' into Nobodys' Fault - love the traditional blues - into Eyes into China Doll - phew
- Dicks 6 - '83 - Hartford - discs 2 & 3 - one of my favorite Scarlet-Fires - Spanish Jam, Stella
- SF Jazz Collective - 1st album, live 2002 - all-star ensemble - songs of Ornette Coleman + original comps is one of their best - Joshua Redman on board - they just released another live album - material from Antonio Carlos Jobim + original compositions waiting to get into this one. SF Jazz Center is a fantastic venue - small = no bad seats with great sound.

I don't post much but check in and glad to see the community going strong. I'm not an old tape trader, just old, and I feel I've been standing on the shoulders or is it listening in at the ears of all you heads that make the call for your favorite shows - I had never heard Swing '77 - great call - awesome show!! I've started dipping into the archives for other shows you'all call for - lots of great stuff still to be Normanized! Keep 'em coming - Thanks !!

Hard to know how many copies of the Warfield CD were available in various markets. Total was allegedly 6000. What is certain is that some were made in the US and some were made in Europe. The European version has the barcode number as the catalog number on the spine of the sleeve and on the discs themselves. Made in the EU is also printed everywhere. At the clear centre of the discs is the name of the plant that made 'em. Not Mexico! How many European copies were made and how many US copies is something we shall never know. 4000 US + 2000 European?

I concur Vguy, that was the best cover art so far and that shirt was pretty nice. I bought 2 and gave one as a gift, now if you all don't think that capitalism is all that bad, the guy I gifted it to kept it till they were sold out, then he put it up on ebay unopened, he got 80.00 bucks for it, do you believe that? Not that I'm recommending we all order extras to sell on the secondary market, but that's a tidy bit of profit for holding on to a t shirt for about 3 months. I will purchase a couple this time also, just to have it and I think I will keep both of them. Just goes to show, you don't never know, but the limited edition stuff sells if that's your bag.
Hippiechick, I do believe the dark star on the upcoming release will get us all moist, sans lube :)

the family was all asleep by 9:30 or so and the phillies were playing a late game @colorado. I settled into my chair, put the game on mute, slipped on some headphones and listened to the 2 new acoustic sets from 10/9 and 10/10/80.

After that I put on the bulk of the 10/23/80 acoustic set from the expanded reckoning release. After a long week, it was as relaxing a Friday night as I could remember (despite the phillies blowing it in the 12th inning).

hope everyone has a peaceful weekend.

Was that dating or flirting? I’m old and forgot what all that was like.....and certainly know nothing about this online stuff ; )

Recently was fortunate to snag a copy of Dave’s 19 (1/23& p/o 24/70 and finally gave 1/23 a whirl last night. Besides a couple hiccups in the first, what a show. We get TOO and the DS>>SS>>LL, and what a beautifully weird Dark Star that was! Only thing missing was an Eleven, ok perhaps a Caution if we’re being greedy: )
Thinking I’m going to have to find time for all this early 70 stuff; DaP 30 1/2 & 3, DaP 19 1/23&24, DPs 4 2/13&14, 30 trips 4/15, 4/18, DPs 8 5/2, RT v3, #3 5/15, and perhaps a little festival express for dessert!
Another great transitional era I had not dug into much...really like the late 69 into early 70 stretch, kinda reminds me of the late 76 Cow palace- Swing early 77 shift...

...Are not yet known. They have to be either Dead originals or public domain according to Dave last year. I put up a tracklist that I thought was a good bet earlier in this thread. Wish more responses were visible per page. But it is what it is. The only hint was Dave said Alligator would be on it, so that sequence is about 23 minutes.
