DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, NEW YORK 1/2/70 captures the Grateful Dead as they make their first foray from the experimental 60s into their early 70s acoustic Americana period. Yes, this one is a little bit country and a little bit (psychedelic) rock and roll.

When the "Magnificent Seven" - Pigpen on percussion, T.C. on keys - first took the stage on 1/2/70, evidence was clear that the trip was about to take a turn. From their western wears to the twang in Jerry’s “broken-string blues,” it appeared they'd brought the Bakersfield sound to the Big Apple. They worked through much of what would become Workingman's Dead, stunning the crowd with laid-back numbers like "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," and "Black Peter." Just the same, they satisfied 60s stalwarts with magical versions of "Dark Star," "St. Stephen," and "That's It For The Other One." Sonic alchemy, indeed!

DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, New York 1/2/70 has been rounded out with a bit of 1/3/70 (the subscribers-only bonus disc features the bulk of 1/3/70). It was recorded by the great Owsley "Bear" Stanley and has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30 is limited to 20,000 individually-numbered copies*.

    Streaming is the Future

For sure streaming is the future. Ironically, my 16 year old daughter the other day said she wanted a record player though, so go figure.

I do iTunes personally, meaning I purchase the albums I want digitally (maybe 2 or 3 a month) and download all my GD CDs using their version of lossless. Works GRATE, using a Bose wireless speaker I play what I want from the laptop and the speaker can follow me from room to room.

If I want something more mindless, I stream the two best public radio stations in the world, KEXP in Seattle and KXCI in Tucson using Alexa. Add to that daily NPR and about 5 podcasts I listen to every week and there is almost too much to listen to these days! It's a good time to be a deadhead.

Agree. For what it's worth. I think dreading provided some valuable insights, actually all the comments the last two days were quite good and had valid points.

Finished my work for the day, off for a little adventure, a mildly difficult one today, I have butterflies in my stomach just thinking about the first drop.. It's a bastard if you get it wrong. Picking some tunes.. and away I go.

Have a great day all.. Some 69 is probably in order, either for #51, #52 or a box. They have plenty from this year to chose from and the timing is right. Man.. it is a wonderful Spring day in the mountains East.. 68 degrees, a high of 72, beautiful clarity - I can see for miles and miles and sun. Time to put away the skis. :D

I like seeing the band at work.

When Long Strange Trip was announced as a streaming movie I posted on this site (the previous version with the non-white background) that I would watch the movie when it came out on Blu-ray. Well, my patience paid off because I bought the Blu-ray and got a bonus disc with video that wasn’t part of the original stream.
And I can watch the video as much as I want without paying any membership fees.

Keep in mind that a lot of the general population who think streaming music is great are also the people who can only listen to 3-minute songs with a catchy beat and lyrics. They would never listen to a live concert, and would run away screaming with their fingers in their ears when they got about 5 minutes into a 30-minute Dark Star.

I found it ironic after reading the comments yesterday and Sunday that Sirius would have that show on at noon yesterday. And with all the rain in CT yesterday 95 was a crawl so i got to listen to the whole show... I still get goose bumps when they break out We Bid You Goodnight.. Favorite run of shows that I saw... be good everyone bob t

aaaaaand, you don't have to stress, get to the site, order....

it's all done at one time in November/December, and you have the rest of the year to enjoy the GD (and whatever else you like.)

I have to say, this is one impassioned discussion - and I am not surprised. We are all of the sort who are a bit rabid about our music - this is a relatively rare attribute across humanity one might think, so in this regard it also makes us extra special.

I get all sides of the discussion going on here - from people who like to have hard copies that can't be destroyed by a solar flare, to people who want nothing at all other than a slick box playing the music they love with no strings attached. Then there is everyone in between, ranging from limited access to certain technologies that could take them over a hump to others who have every imaginable setup so they can like their cake in any format and eat it too.

In my opinion, all of it is reasonable and to each their own. Personally, I love the CDs and box sets for the "being able to hold and smell them" aspect. For a long time I was not truly understanding the draw toward streaming. But, a few Christmas's ago we were gifted a Sonos speaker, and now we have 5 of them throughout the house. And this system has grown on me TREMENDOUSLY.

Not only can you link Sirius to Sonos (which we've done - GD radio, 24/7 baby), there are also a bazillion other channels that I've found (Spotify anyone?) where you can literally find every officially released GD show save the Dave's Pick's (I'm talking ALL Dick's picks, all of E'72, the entire Road Trips series, etc.). Furthermore, and this is the real kicker, I can also access the relisten app from Sonos, which of course mirrors the complete archive.org GD show history. So in reality, simply with sonos, I can play any GD show throughout the house (and any format of show, but of course I gravitate toward the C. Millers and Betty's) - hell I could play 5 different GD shows on each speaker if I wanted to. But then of course I have the big boy stereo, which in fact I Have two such setups in two different rooms, so I can spin CDs pretty much anywhere too. And, lately, I've been doing a bit of dipping into You Tube for some GD shows - there is a lot of stuff out there and people have put in the time to match up video (albeit grainy, yes, but I more see it as a historical time capsule) with the best audio source so the end result if fairly satisfying. And to conekid's point, I don't feel I need to be staring at the TV 100% of the time, but if something cool is happening with a tune, you at least can get a visual to go along with it. And I watch You Tube via my XBOX, which is hooked up to my 80-inch TV and big boy stereo #2 so it's not like I'm watching via a laptop with $hitty speakers and 12 inch screen.

Regardless - the takeaway for me is that a Deadhead's listening preference is likely to be as variable as us Deadheads ourselves. And that's not a bad thing at all - if anything its a testament as to the steadfast dedication to LISTENING that will continue to exist and thus ensure this valve of awesomeness never shuts off.

Jim - yeah,,,, what is it with 10 per page? I usually check in the morning and today I had to back up 3 pages.

Video - never cared for it. I too can only handle a few songs. Hard to just sit on the couch.

8 Tracks,,,, never had one. Installed a shitload of them for people back in the early 70's when everyone wanted Led Zep 2 (in stereo) since most cars only had 6 watt mono am radios. I was the odd ball. I had a cassette recorder I got for Christmas one year, maybe I was 14. When I started driving and had my first car I routed a wire from my dash speaker to under the drivers seat. There it terminated in a 1/4" mini jack, I could plug this into my cassette recorder(mono recorder!!!!) and play tapes. This system also allowed me to turn on the radio and my wire would pump the sound to my mini jack, this I could jack into my cassette RECORDER jack are record songs off the radio. This was in 72 with my 66 Chrysler Newport!

I am also not in favor of this rent, no own world. You can't buy Word no more (right?), now you just rent it. Don't think you can buy any of the Microsoft software anymore, only rent.

On this streaming music front, no interest here. We seem to have every streaming service at work and someone always has some "station" on. They have a world of music available, but if you just let it play, it's the same shit everyday. The other problem (imo) with cloud storage/streaming models (plus the data cost of the downloading) is maybe today it's cheap, but a few years down the road it cost a fortune. Look at your cable bills, started off cheap-ish, now days my bill is 250 a month (cable, landline, internet) Whatever my physical media cost, I have the media. I have it backed up nine ways to Sunday (never understood that expression)

Also in the end, I just plain collect music. I have 16 banker boxes filled with cd's, all the big box sets (dead and others). Have about 15 feet of lp's (and have started buying more, even though I don't have a turntable setup,,,stupid huh?) Got about 400 45's and about 700 78's. It's a stupid trait I have,,,,, most don't understand.

oh yeah, on the streaming front, most of the kids I work with, don't have a tv, a stereo, internet connections, cable,,,etc. They have smart phones with unlimited data plans and use their phones for everything. How they can watch tv on those little screens is beyond me? A chunk use their game platform for internet access, for services like Netflix/hulu. Also most can spend a evening watching youtube stuff. There's a service that's gonna cost money down the road :-)

As I read these posts, I come to the conclusion that I am, in some ways, "that guy." I still love having the CD in my collection, the booklets that come with it, and the music laid out together as the artist intended. I don't see technically how CD's will become obsolete, nor will the sound become degraded over time. For those of us that still enjoy putting the media in, and digging it the way the artists intended, CD's are still cool. I also love all the concert DVD's you can get now, so you can watch and listen!
That said, I also have a large memory card in my phone, which currently has over 500 of these CD's ripped to it, so I can listen to songs, make playlists, pick and artist and shuffle, etc. Lots of ways to tunes via Blue Tooth.
Also, I have SiriusXM in my car, so when driving I can still see whats happening on the Grateful Dead channel and others.
In addition, I use Pandora for streaming. Here I have created my own channels so I can listen to everything from Zappa, to The Dead and other 60's stuff, to New Wave, so guitar virtuoso's. I have channels created for all of these.
So, I am "that guy" that still buys CD's, but I'm also "this guy" that streams, uses Bluetooth from my phone, and can go for Satellite radio as the mood moves me.
My point here, is diversify!!! There are many ways to listen to music, and I love music enough to use them all. Don't limit yourself, use the technology to expand your listening realm, but don't give up on buying CD's just because streaming is available. If you love CD's, as many of us still do, buy them, if you're streaming your way to your favorite tunes, go for it. The point is, you have many ways to access music, and if you love music, this is an awesome time to be alive! Live. Love. Laugh, Listen. Peace!!

All good points. There are still advantages to physical product - they'll linger a long time. My wife's folks still have a VCR player and a wall full of bulky movies. But from a commercial standpoint, DVD/BlueRay's is in a death-spiral.

18 hours into the selling out of #30, we have the usual comments on cover art (love it) upping the numbers (sure, whatever) and a juicy conversation on bonus content (it’s gonna be great). So the REALLY important discussion moves on to the Box Set. Have to admit, the PNW from last year has dropped in my rotation. I have a bit of buyer’s remorse as the design and art of the box are gorgeous, but I don’t sit and look at it. Here’s hoping for a lean, music focused set with a bit less flourish. Are we looking at a Greek anthology-5 shows from different runs over the years? Or maybe a midnight sun 80 mini box (called for many times over the years) or maybe Fall 80. What tours have not been heavily mined? I love Spring 71, but much of this ground has been covered. I just failed the robot test (again) time to go back to lurking.

If precedence is any indication on DP's best release throughout a given year, 1-2-70 will be the winner hands down. Anything from 1970 in an official release is always highly sought after to my already over-blown GD collection. This was also a decent period for singing. Dark*-Stephen-11-Lovelight, enough said, done. (TIFTOO bonus)

Please stop sending me emails for an item that is "out of stock". What's the point? You have done this many times, I get an offer for the latest release and as soon as I click order it tells me out of stock. Either stop sending me "out of stock" offers or make more copies.

Happy Friday good people!

4/19/82: “woooooohooooooohoooo, never more.....” happy anniversary Jim. I believe you stated this was your first show? Dam, what a dewsy!

WELCOME BACK; glad to see so many folks drop in that we haven’t seen in a while, especially hippie chick picking up right where she left off.....how’s things from the other side? Now if only Bolo was feeling up for the party......and we hope Docs at least lurking?

VARIABLE FORMATS; am I the only one intrigued by Dave’s seaside carrot comments about this year seeing other formats etc? Does that mean different media, like video? or perhaps they’ve finally listened to us and are going to start different kinds of series besides Dave’s? Hurry up, some of us could die anyday now lol.
Perhaps like Kayak guy used to lobby for, or some of us are ready for lower shelf stuff so we can get the post reel stuff out? (In addition to the more formal, predominantly 70s reel to reel sources)......dammit, inquiring minds wanta know!

Vguy; gotta be lovin’ it. All this great music coming out, Phil coming to town, and his boys are skating up a storm!

I'd love to see a '69 Box Set release to complement the Fillmore West box. Ideally the Ark shows or an Avalon-run anthology. But with this DaP 30 and the Aoxomoxoa 50th Avalon excerpts (2nd disc) I doubt we'll see that this year.

I'm thinking that it'll probably be a Brent-era box from '79 or '84

Rip 'n' burn doesn't mean you lose the HDCD encoding. Similarly the Download series were HDCD encoded. You could copy the file and it would still maintain the HDCD encoding. It is an integral part of the digital file and cannot be undone or lost. Luckily.

I've gotta say I kinda love the idea of Deadhead Captcha. It seems like some Head would have developed such a thing, especially given how many of us are in tech. If anybody has any info I'd love to hear it, though I have no idea what's going to turn out to work in real life...

Ha.. right.. "Select the pictures that contain blotter art."

Ouroborous, yes.. 4/19/82.. my first show. I had no idea what I was getting into and how it would change my life. So much fun and a wild night.

About a week and a half until the better part of two shows land in our mailboxes. I have to admit.. I have not done a deep dive into these two shows, they will almost be new to me.

What are you all doing, what are you listening to?

Bought it
Couldn't help myself. Pacific Northwest one was pretty good quality so I figured this would be to.

I haven't been this psyched up for a release in quite some time. And that's saying something because I was pretty stoked for the swing Auditorium show. I've been hoping for something like the Dick's Picks 16 set list for a while, like I forget who mentioned it, but it has a good mixture of the Primal dead and the new stuff. Am I as excited as hippychick? Yes I am. .... yes I am. Hippychick if you ever want to Rendezvous and listen to some records, I have a good collection.

Blew through Beatclub. Damn fine TOO, absolute highlight film material.

And now I'm up to Rockin' The Rhein. Definitely top 10 E72 for me, and my first Dark Star. DS part II has o once in a Deadtime jam that I enjoy quite an bit. One of the better PITB is here too. My favorite Sugar Magnolia, which is the song and version that reeled me into the Dead Zone for life. Wharf Rat is top 2.

Since it is the 50th anniversary of Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead and the Ark shows, I concur it is High Time to give those the Plangent and Norman treatments. And then I hope Dave's wording of multiple formats portends a video release of some sort, and that 2/28/69 is the November Black Friday release.

I ordered the cd of the Warfield, had a chance to snag the record, but figured the cd better suited me for this release, as I'd probably leave the vinyl sealed. But am looking forward to the cd, when it comes. Would've picked up at the record store, but he didn't get any copies of the cd, he tried ordering, but got shut out, too. I had no interest in the Sage and Spirit. The best thing about it, and motivating factor for everybody I heard from was the artwork, which is great, but the choices are odd, and to use one of the last Jack Straws that Bob sang lead solo on, when there are so many far superior versions from which to choose where Jerry sang lead as well. My only purchase ended up being The Ramones NYE 1979, which I have yet to open, but am looking forward to this sure to be explosive performance that was followed by a screening of the cult classic Rock n Roll High School featuring everybody's favorite punks. The show features Do You Wanna Dance the Bobby Freeman early rock hit that David Nelson and Sara Garcia both say Jerry played on, though wikipedia disuptes it as rumor. I'd think David Nelson and Jerry's first wife would have a good idea of that being a fact, probably hearing it from Jerry himself. The solo is nothing fancy at all, very rudimentary, but gets the job done like Luther Perkins on Folsom Prison Blues and many others, can't seeing Jerry just emptily bragging that he did that, since Johnny Ramone probably was able to copy it note for note on this show. Anyway, can't wait for a great chance to blast that in the living room. I'll be on my 10th listen of DaP 30 by then probably. :)

I liken speculation about incoming Dead releases to the NFL experience. Wake me when the regular season kicks off, and when the CD arrives in my mailbox. Past listens: Paris Combo, 5; Dead & Co. 6/21/16 Saratoga; Black Sabbath, 13; R.E.M., Document; Grateful Dead 12/12/78 Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami. Go Avs! \m/

....is making me wanting to bust out Thelma. Snagged that bonus disc tee, which in my opinion, is still the best cover art yet. Wore the hell out of it when new, so it's already showing signs of wear. Rarely bust it out these daze. On the fence with the DaP 30 tee. We'll see.... Happy 4.20 everyone. I rarely wake and bake, but may make an exception tomorrow.
....what have I been listening to lately Jim? Hockey. Lots of hockey.

Been laying off the Pig for a sort of sonic purge in anticipation of this one! Super stoked for this one and we get TC too.
Last 5:
- Dicks 13 - '81 Nassau - love this one - dozed off last night with the headphones to a sweet He's Gone - woke 5 minutes later to a swarm of bees as Jerry went nuts with Caution/Spanish Jam- LOL. Had to pull em off and pick-it up again today. That Jam out of Drums is pretty cool, into a short but great Hammond B3 heavy TOO.
- Sons of Champlin - Secret - Live from 2002 - high energy, great recording , Rooftop, Get High....love me some vibraphone solos , especially when enhanced! Mic Gillette (TOP) and Tom Saviano on horns
- PNW 5-17-74 Vancouver - great show - WOS is so frickin clean and clear - Loose Lucy is super funky, China-Rider, Truckin' into Nobodys' Fault - love the traditional blues - into Eyes into China Doll - phew
- Dicks 6 - '83 - Hartford - discs 2 & 3 - one of my favorite Scarlet-Fires - Spanish Jam, Stella
- SF Jazz Collective - 1st album, live 2002 - all-star ensemble - songs of Ornette Coleman + original comps is one of their best - Joshua Redman on board - they just released another live album - material from Antonio Carlos Jobim + original compositions waiting to get into this one. SF Jazz Center is a fantastic venue - small = no bad seats with great sound.

I don't post much but check in and glad to see the community going strong. I'm not an old tape trader, just old, and I feel I've been standing on the shoulders or is it listening in at the ears of all you heads that make the call for your favorite shows - I had never heard Swing '77 - great call - awesome show!! I've started dipping into the archives for other shows you'all call for - lots of great stuff still to be Normanized! Keep 'em coming - Thanks !!

adjective
1. offensively displaying or intended to arouse sexual desire.
2. smooth and slippery with oil or a similar substance.

Hard to know how many copies of the Warfield CD were available in various markets. Total was allegedly 6000. What is certain is that some were made in the US and some were made in Europe. The European version has the barcode number as the catalog number on the spine of the sleeve and on the discs themselves. Made in the EU is also printed everywhere. At the clear centre of the discs is the name of the plant that made 'em. Not Mexico! How many European copies were made and how many US copies is something we shall never know. 4000 US + 2000 European?

I concur Vguy, that was the best cover art so far and that shirt was pretty nice. I bought 2 and gave one as a gift, now if you all don't think that capitalism is all that bad, the guy I gifted it to kept it till they were sold out, then he put it up on ebay unopened, he got 80.00 bucks for it, do you believe that? Not that I'm recommending we all order extras to sell on the secondary market, but that's a tidy bit of profit for holding on to a t shirt for about 3 months. I will purchase a couple this time also, just to have it and I think I will keep both of them. Just goes to show, you don't never know, but the limited edition stuff sells if that's your bag.
Hippiechick, I do believe the dark star on the upcoming release will get us all moist, sans lube :)

the family was all asleep by 9:30 or so and the phillies were playing a late game @colorado. I settled into my chair, put the game on mute, slipped on some headphones and listened to the 2 new acoustic sets from 10/9 and 10/10/80.

After that I put on the bulk of the 10/23/80 acoustic set from the expanded reckoning release. After a long week, it was as relaxing a Friday night as I could remember (despite the phillies blowing it in the 12th inning).

hope everyone has a peaceful weekend.

The discussion, my good Grouch E. Ness, was about listening to records. As this site does sponsor a meet up at the movies night, I would say we're in bounds:-)

Recently was fortunate to snag a copy of Dave’s 19 (1/23& p/o 24/70 and finally gave 1/23 a whirl last night. Besides a couple hiccups in the first, what a show. We get TOO and the DS>>SS>>LL, and what a beautifully weird Dark Star that was! Only thing missing was an Eleven, ok perhaps a Caution if we’re being greedy: )
Thinking I’m going to have to find time for all this early 70 stuff; DaP 30 1/2 & 3, DaP 19 1/23&24, DPs 4 2/13&14, 30 trips 4/15, 4/18, DPs 8 5/2, RT v3, #3 5/15, and perhaps a little festival express for dessert!
Another great transitional era I had not dug into much...really like the late 69 into early 70 stretch, kinda reminds me of the late 76 Cow palace- Swing early 77 shift...

Maybe we just need a new thread. Something like "avatar's I want to bang",,, something subtle like that.

.... definitely in bounds. I mean, there's a series called Dick's Pic(k)s for dangs sake! 😉
lol. "subtle"

...Are not yet known. They have to be either Dead originals or public domain according to Dave last year. I put up a tracklist that I thought was a good bet earlier in this thread. Wish more responses were visible per page. But it is what it is. The only hint was Dave said Alligator would be on it, so that sequence is about 23 minutes.

...a grateful morning to all my brothers & sisters out there on this blessed Sunday, Happy Holidays folks!
...I just wrote the intire list of Cover Songs in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire and tried to post it for you all to read but deleted it by accident. I’m on a phone, no computer, it took me a while to do, I’m not going to do it All over again much to hard for this aging Deadhead. I’m sorry. Maybe some else who has a computer can post it for everyone to read... peace be with you all! 🙏❤️😎💐
Ps - don’t forget “arrangements “ 😉✌️
