Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Indeed, What Went Wrong?
What went right? Incompetence and greed. Deadheads provided the "name on the dotted line sure profitability", leading us to believe they were issuing Fillmore West like limited editions with all the neat stuff in packaging they usually come up with and then they made a couple of million dollars to date. Even the multi-colored symbols on the digi-paks were lame. What was the obsession with food? No originality, none. Nobody cared enough to make sure the digi-paks came off the line properly. Almost all the deadheads I talk to said this really gave Dead.net/Rhino a black eye and left a bad taste in their mouth. Here is the message from all involved that produced this: WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU, WE JUST WANT THE MONEY!

Gotta love these ebay sellers hawking the codes... It's like they can't even be bothered to auction off the box itself, with all the work that would entail: having it delivered to them and then immediately shipping it off to another destination. The guiding principle seems to be the least amount of work for the highest possible profit.

After more than 2 weeks of waiting for codes, having codes reset, etc, I was finally able to get a confirmation and purchased. Quick question. Right now only the COMPLETE box set are being sold, right. The one with the book and all. I got the "miracle" email saying people backed out and here's my chance at the whole thing. Thing is, I had to have my code reset and it took 3 days to order. Someone ease my mind and tell I'm getting the whole thing. A special thanks to Marye for replying to emails and helping me out. Thank you very much. And for those people that got the "product no longer available" message. I got that 3 times, had my code reset and then it worked. So don't give up...

When the order is placed a $450.00 hold is placed on your card and the funds are released after approximately 5 business days. The $450 won't be permanently charged to your card until the box ships. At least that's my understanding. Can't wait until September!

This is gonna be a long but fruitful wait. When I get it, listening will be like traveling with the band. An interactive experience, if you will. The spirit of Pig precipitates the whole proceeding. My imagination will loom large until I have the thing in my hands. I envision the band holding a map in their hands and asking their road manager where the hell they're going. Much partying and good music ensues, and hey there's a 16-track rig in tow. Bonus! How lucky are we that these recordings exist?

As most Dead Heads I was too late to order the Box Set. Reluctantly I pre-ordered the Music Only set for the full price. Then the confirmation e-mail was not sent to me. But then... a Miracle happened! I received the e-mail with a code for the Box Set. I made a giant leap in the air. I tried to order but to my deep disapointment the Box Set was sold out. Sold out? I have a code and it is sold out? I called to ask what could be happening. I was told that something was set wrong in the computer at the store. It was not sold out. After several tries a bit later on I received my order confirmation. WOW, thank you GD. Miracles do happen. Now for a long wait to receive all this wonderful music. Ship of Fools

So now that the order process is being sorted through. I was just starting to think about how this Europe 72 run started out as I was listening to DP 30 from the March Academy of Music run 3/25/ & 28/72. Am I correct to assume the March 22-28 Academy of Music shows were the last US dates before they headed off to Europe?

Positively 4thstreet According to the Database at Dead.Net they played an April 4th show at Winterland before departing for Europe. The first show in Europe is April 7th. The other databases I checked didn't have the Winterland show listed. Not sure but that would would of been quite a trip from the west coast to Europe with the 6 hour time difference. I was lucky as a young kid to catch my first Dead show which was the 3rd show they played after returning back at Dillon in Hartford. That was a 5 hour show if I remember. That picture on my profile is a picture I took of the jam at the end with Dicky Betts, Jaimoe and Berry Oakley..

According to their (confirmed) tour itinerary, which is to be found somewhere in the bowels of this site - I can't remember exactly where, The tour itinerary begins with: April 2 - Arrive London April 3 - Free April 4 - Free April 5 - Technical set-up April 6 - Soundcheck April 7 - Empire Pool, Wembley, London April 8 - Empire Pool, Wembley, London April 9 - Free April 10 - Depart London That would seem to rule out a Winterland show on April 4. In any event it seems unlikely that they would play in London 3 days after San Francisco, bearing in mind the logistics of the whole European adventure.

Simonrob, That makes sense on the itinerary for April. The Winterland show doesn't make sense. Maybe someone at Dead.net can correct this and remove the April 4th Winterland show from the Shows database.

"The people who sell codes should be permanently locked out from all future releases in a heartbeat!" That is easier said than done, and the attempt could do more damage in the long term. I experienced some uncertainty, but am so far satisfied with how this release is being handled. I came late to the game and ended up happily with a pre-order for one of the 7,200. Persistence is the key, I think. Keep trying and keep and eye out and you will be rewarded. In this and in life.

The last shows played in the U.S. before heading to England were played at The Academy Of Music in NYC 03/21to28/72 (as per Dead Base and NY Dead Heads in attendance). As per Rbt.Hunter (see booklet from Europe 72) "Departure from U.S.was Feast of Fools, 1 April. Arrival in London was Easter Sunday , 2 April. April saw England, Denmark and Germany. May saw France, England, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and England." Hope this helps, The Weve

As far as I know, NRPS were in Europe at the same time as the Dead but did not play the same shows. What I do know for sure is that they played at the Bickershaw Mud Extravaganza on May 5-7. The lineup for the last day of the festival (May 7) was: Brinsley Schwartz (with a young Nick Lowe on bass), Country Joe McDonald, NRPS and the Dead. These four acts managed to play an afternoon, an evening and most of a night between them. Memorable.

Awesome. That show at archive.org is a Betty Board too, wish archive had the rest of the shows in that run.

That makes sense as Bob & Betty were along for the ride (see the "Travelers" page of the itinerary - the link is 5 or 6 posts back - thanks Ed!). Does that mean that the Dead's shows were also recorded by them?

Here's a eyewitness (http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/prog.html) who wrote; SUNDAY. Just exactly why everything was so late on Sunday is probably due to the fact that the Saturday show actually finished around 6.00 am Sunday. Certainly it wasn't due to a surfeit of band changeovers as there were only six acts over the space of the entire day. This of course did not prevent the Dead from finishing around 4.am Monday. Some people have said the Dead played for five hours ,but the entire show comes in around 245 mins, so there was a considerable exaggeration factor present. I have no idea whether there was any break at all in the programme on Sunday morning, but with the non show of yet another band ,this time the 'Horse with no Name' one hit wonders- "America"- and a couple of local acts in the early morning, there was only Country Joe and Brinsley Schwarz to entertain the masses before the onset of the Dead and the New Riders. I have faint recollections of the Schwarz's set and I'm sure I did catch Country Joe, doing a reprise of his Woodstock function. But really, Sunday was the day the Grateful Dead embedded themselves into my conscious for good and everything else paled in comparison.

As we speak right now no tour leg is more represented than europe 72 right now...there's already a load of discs from that tour already in your closet...there's the 2 disc europe 72, there's the England Comp...maybe 3-4 discs...then 100 year hall and Rockin' the Rhein...possibly a dicks pick...this box set had apprehension but everyone or enough people want it to make it a success...i for one didn't think twice because it's 22 shows in grade A+ quality...the band was smokin' and it's the last hurrah with the original line up...by 1973 it's not the same band, it's still a great band but gone is Pig and it's blues element, as the band started going more towards alternative country...not totally but more towards it for sure...so this is something alot of us deadheads value in this 1972 release...soon we'll have 22 shows in grade A quality from a great period, there's no doubt about that...personally couldn't ask for anything better than this...the 1980 acoustic/electric tour is asked for but it's gone, the orignal source the record company recorded soundboards are gone said to have been erased...other than that can't think of another period...possibly 1970 but nothing perfessionally has been known to have been recorded, we'll have to continue with what we have already...and that's the story on the greatest live band in terms of this kind of music...i think we're all in a slot that like this kind of music...it's probably a personal taste and maybe not for everyone in the world today, but for the one's that do like it like it a little too much to insane proportions...possibly.

If anything, the Dead were moving *away* from alt.country in '73. From the acoustic sets that started in late '69 to Phil and Jerry playing in the New Riders, to American Beauty and Workingman's, and portions of Ace and Garcia, tracks on Skull and Roses... the alt.country influence had fully flowered by E72. When I think of '73 I think of the move into jazzier, more free-form jams like in Eyes and HC Sunshine. I'll agree that the blues element pretty much disappeared for many years after Pigpen left, but I'd look at '70-72 as the peak for the alt.country Dead, not '73.

God love me I've been listening to the Dead since 68, got all the releases all the books, saw all the London shows in 72 and now you release something wonderful and it's not available to us. The visuals is part of the experience. You guys got it wrong and I think you should hold your hands up and sort it out. In the Kingdom of Kerry on the west of Ireland we would like a copy of the original release please. Can arrange to have it sent to a US. address if necessary. Mr B

Those are all some very valid reasons as to why you should have a box. I'm sure the guys at Rhino are going to get right on it. While they are at it, maybe they should go out into San Francisco Bay and the Ganges, collect Jerry's ashes, and reincarnate him so he can autograph your set.
