An institution in American rock music, the Grateful Dead continue to surprise the ears with new arrangements and altered styles. If their playing continues with the force that was heard in San Bernardino, the spirit of the Dead will live on. - Sun Telegram

We are more than pleased to kick off this year's Dave's Picks series with the much requested and quite spirited complete performance from Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, CA 2/26/77. The Swing ’77 show was a unique beast, unlike any others from this era: as the band’s first concert of the year, it bridged the gap between the new and re-emerging sound of the returning 1976 Grateful Dead and the precision excellence of the spring ’77 Dead. Debuting two of their most intricately crafted songs of the 1970s, “Terrapin Station” (to open, no less!) and “Estimated Prophet,” the Dead demonstrated right from the start of this new touring year that they were not going to be a nostalgia act; they were going to be as adventurous and ambitious as they were at any time in their career.

Join the adventure as they soar through tried and true ("Playing In The Band," "Tennessee Jed"), well-loved covers ("Mama Tried," "Samson and Delilah," "Dancing In the Street"), and epic new jams.

Rounded out with three songs from Santa Barbara, CA 2/27/77, this one was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 29 is limited to 20,000 individually-numbered copies*.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

Interesting observation DaveRock, about the crowd, and the combo. I didn’t pick up on this when listening, but will make a point to go back and relisten to this section. Death bells are ringing while the people go run and see (and cheer apparently 😊). My guess is the folks there didn’t realize the connection either. I’ll bet that the boys knew exactly what they were doing...or maybe just random order....

The opening Casey Jones at the 10/2/77 show is nearly 10 minutes long.

I never bought that Landover show 3/15/90 as it always seemed a bit expensive. I notice its still available on this website, too. Still a bit pricey.

I listened to the 3/14/90 last night, though. Excellent show-both sets hit the spot. Very strange how some sections of the crowd cheer at the line "When it seems like this night will last forever", in "Black Muddy River", though. Especially coming after the last song sung by Jerry in the show, "Black Peter". It sounds more like an expression of despair than celebration. Maybe you had to be there!

    question re: Terrapin Limited

Please forgive the semi-convoluted question. Is that venue out in CA (is it called Terrapin Crossroads?) Phil had built the museum/venue Terrapin Limited was supposed to help fund?

Oh, and hell yeah I was stoked when Terrapin Limited was released. Still got mine (which I purchased via the Almanac)!

....the Jack Straw from Eugene '93 was like that. Because Bobby was too busy smashing his guitar backstage. Lol. Then he gathered himself up and came back out like nothing happened. True professional. Downside? A nice guitar reduced to splinters ala Pete Townsend. Upside? More Jerry fills. According to my math, it evened out.

....like Linus's blanket, it's familiar and warm. My "limited edition" # of Terrapin Station is 25079. Released in 1997. Remember when this came out? It was a revelation! Now we're all just spoiled heads. Spoil me Seymour!

Still nothing and worse yet when I go to look at my order, most of the items say “on back order” except for the bonus disc. And I ordered very early.

I believe it was Bob's mic on DP 18 Samson. I'm relying solely on memory here so we know what that means...

I could swear there was another similar version somewhere along the line, but drat I should have written it down.

Agree it must be DP 18

I have been listening to "post hiatus" shows only since DaP 29 hit my doorstep, and the DP 18 Samson has a huge 5 minute intro before they even start singing. I remember thinking this is odd at the time and not really hearing any missing instruments, so Donna must be in the bathroom.

Darn, my Eel box isn't predicted to arrive until next Thursday!! I did take someone's advice and ordered that Mott the Hoople box. It will arrive sooner than the Eel!!

I second or third the praise for the Spring 1990 boxes. One of my favorite go to boxes, each show is great. I'm in my third listen slowly to both boxes in chronological order. Finished Nassau run this week, and it's on to Atlanta run to finish the tour.

I have also been enjoying the Northwest 73/74 box, just finished my third listen. Blown away by that 47 minute Playin' from Seattle. We agreed to listen to that one again soon.

Right on Uncle Sam
I'd think most may agree, this thread helped get our collective mojo back.
Whether it was the awesomeness of the 'Schwiiiing' or just that the time was right, the metamorphosis is hard to ignore. I trust it will carry over with the momentum in tow aiming at the prime time rockabilly-fest in 2/3/70.

Peace All
