Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Indeed, What Went Wrong?
What went right? Incompetence and greed. Deadheads provided the "name on the dotted line sure profitability", leading us to believe they were issuing Fillmore West like limited editions with all the neat stuff in packaging they usually come up with and then they made a couple of million dollars to date. Even the multi-colored symbols on the digi-paks were lame. What was the obsession with food? No originality, none. Nobody cared enough to make sure the digi-paks came off the line properly. Almost all the deadheads I talk to said this really gave Dead.net/Rhino a black eye and left a bad taste in their mouth. Here is the message from all involved that produced this: WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU, WE JUST WANT THE MONEY!

I'm so glad this is working out for everyone. I do feel sorry for those that stressed and paid large sums of money to the ebay scumbags. Most likely, they would have ended up with a box anyways. Hopefully everyone, us included, learned from this and will apply it the next time there is a cool box offered.

I do believe in 73 they added more country type songs to their sets...but i'll have to look it up...but by 1974 they broke up for awhile...1974 was their last year...i for one would never give the dead the acid rock tag...and if anything you couldn't call the dead a country band but like a famous record label owner said, "this doesn't sound Grateful Dead enough"...but i'll say with Pig's disappearance from the band gone went the blues sound pretty much...but not totally i do recall some blues numbers in later years sang lead by Bob Weird i mean Weir...but don't quote me i don't claim to be the official biographer of the dead...i'm just a guy who likes dicks picks, road trips, other live cds and the box sets...not much of an album to album fan...oh yeah looking forward to the europe 72 box set...in a way hoping for fast summer, but not quite because summer's are great...but like everyone else i guess really looking forward to this release much more than anything else i can remember...except maybe the beatles 09/09/09 re-releases only because they were to be radically different and they were very good...but this is different because it's 22 live shows on 60 discs...with soundchecks possibly.

I see alot of people asking for codes and they've only been members less than a day...if you give a code make sure they're Dead fans and not capitialists...i'm sure their getting 200$ for the codes alone on EBAY...i did see codes for sale up to 450$ was the most, 20$ the least...some say they saw them little as .37 cents maybe they were do gooders...but don't know the lingistics of it if they're getting them or not...but beware of these people looking to rip off others...that's what it is ripping off someone else, not a business opportunity but a rip off opportunity.

I can assure you that I am a loyal fan of the dead. By the time I had come across this page the original box sets were long gone so I just wondered if anyone had an extra code to share the joy. I wish they would just release the box to all, but we can't have everything.

...yeah, a countdown timer AND weekly status updates on the box set. That would be cool. 199 days until the first of September, and 229 until the end. Somewhere in the middle there, rock on ;)

Yes this would be cool. And while Dead.Net is at it, when can we expect to see some of the goodies as promised in the first posting of this wonderful "Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box" ? I am sure ready, how about you ? "Dead.net will periodically provide exclusive content (music, photos, and more) in the coming months to all those who have placed an order." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~♥☼ღ♥♪♫♪♫☮♥ Sunshine Daydream ♥☮ ♫♪♫♪♥ღ☼♥~

That's a very good idea having a coutdown timer...199 days until September 1st...it could go 2 ways and i think it'll be earlier than later if they have all 7200 orders in place early on...if you read the 1st posts they weren't too positive this would work out...so maybe it'll be early september and they can have their money and we can have the box sets...both parties will get rich...they will have $$$$$$ but we will be able to feed our souls pieces of heaven and enrich our hearts and souls.

I agree with you, don't give codes to bloodsuckers, but maybe it´s difficult to check out how honest they are who are asking for codes?

maybe we can ask questions like:you'll get your code if you can answer these questions: "When did they play "looks like rain" for the first time"? or at which venue did Pigpen play together with the band for the last time? or when and where did Keith and Donna play the last time with the band? if they can answer to these questions, congratulations, you got your code, dude!

I got to the site at the end of the weekend in which Europe 72 was announced and found the box set was already announced as sold out. I signed up for the Music Only Edition but although I received an acknowledgement of the music only order I have not received a code for the box set from the store. However, I am sorted out as someone else kindly provided me with a "spare" code and, although the Dead Store no longer recognise my log-in they have confirmed to my email address that my order for the box is recorded. As it has become clear that there are so many codes becoming free I have been wondering why so many people took several codes. I assume that, since the original statement was that the set would only go ahead if they had presold a minimum number of copies there was a positive incentive for people to over-order in order to get the set into production. The same thing also applies to the music only edition as all those people like me who signed up for it when they couldn't get the box set and have now got a code from someone will now drop our order for the music only set, Hopefully, if there is a next time, a more sensible approach to canvassing support for a project will be undertaken - one that doesn't alienate potential customers and cause such problems for both those trying to buy and those selling.

Though, it's not a bad angle I might add. In any event, I've only had a Dead.net user login for about 24+ hours and I'm sure I'm one of the folks that you've noticed come online recently asking kindly for an extra exclusive code. Well, not that this is a confession box here, but I've been a long time Deadhead for over three deadcades and have made numerous purchases on Dead.net and browsed the online forums as a Guest ever since the website first came online many years ago. It was only until now that in desperation for the golden E72 original version box set that I felt the need to create a user login and try my luck at requesting an extra code. I'm happy to say that I received a couple offers for extra codes and accepted one and made the purchase, then informed the other kind soul who offered me a code to pass his extra on to another friend in need. Thank you "blacksharpie" for helping out another fine Deadhead like yourself. As you requested, I will do a good deed for someone in the next few days to square up with you. :) Keep on keepin' on brother! "Just goes to show you don't ever know..."

I can't read 222 pages of comments so I'll point out the obvious that has probably already been voiced- I don't need every show because I've already bought every Europe '72 release there is. 100 Year Hall, The Rheinhalle, Steppin' Out, not to mention the stellar boards of the Paris shows, the Luxembourg radio broadcast, etc. If every show was released individually, over time I would ABSOLUTELY buy the rest of the tour! Even if it eventually cost more than the box-set, $15-20 a pop over a couple of years makes more sense in my world.

I did notice C.C.Rider too. I can't wait until they get into my area.

Missed out on this due to family emergency (79 year old mother broadsided suffering a broken neck, pelvis and both legs - she is out of the hospital now but faces a long and painful rehab process). 53 year old long-time Dead fan here - first show was 11/1/73 at McGaw Hall at Northwestern U and have been going to shows for the better part of 4 decades....I would really like, no LOVE to have this piece of Dead history but will not pay upwards of a grand for it, just out of principle alone. I know this is a touchy subject and if this is out of line I apologize in advance, but I have seen access codes for the box on eBay and would be willing to pay a small fee for one, but as a rule I NEVER patronize scalpers nor do I screw fans in need. I find this very hard to do, but I have read in here of fans helping others out with an extra code....normally I would never do this as I find groveling demeaning (unless it's doing a trade with someone I've traded with before) but if someone has an extra and would like to help a long-time fan out I promise I will do my best to pass the good will on down the line....maybe we could work out a trade or something. As I said, normally I would never beg but this is kind of a very special case, as you all know, and I understand the reluctance and skepticism. As a long time member of the Allmans' site all you have to do is be around there when Beacon tickets go on sale and see the flood of new members asking for the password to the pre-sale. All I can say is Karma will get those people in the end. If this is not acceptable please accept my aplogies in advance....the last thing I want to do is bite the hand that feeds me and piss off the people that perform the public service and Herculean Effort that it takes to get these great releases out. marye really helped me out when I had problems ordering the RT subscription, so if this isn't copacetic the last thing I last I want to do is disrespect this great site, the fans who populate it and the people who let us congregate and allow us to enjoy all this awesome music.....no matter what happens, thanks to those who make it possible for us to relive this transcendental music and those of you who "get it"......

Nobody should have to apologise for asking for a kind code kickdown. It will either happen or it won't, but I can't imagine why anyone would delude themselves, when dispensing such largess, that they were finding The Most Deserving Deadhead. Does it really matter? And no eBay sellers would also be longstanding dead.net members, of course! Yeah, "we" can identify the Real deadheads, right? Right??? But, there *are* real problems out there, people. Join me in bemoaning the demise of Jam of the Week, seemingly now abandoned after only a month. Last week's episode languishes while the new one has yet to be seen, it's time window already half closed...

should have been its, not it's time window As in: the time window belonging to it. Is half closed. Less than a week left for the no-show JotW. It is time window wouldn't make any sense at all, obviously. Sorry, grammar fans!

Hi Golfishing. I have wondered about whether or not Furthur will ever attempt a European tour. I don't remember the post-Jerry 'Dead,' Other Ones, ever touring Europe. I really enjoyed the last 2009 Dead Tour with warren H. The current incarnation as Furthur seems to be working well for them so let's hope it continues and grows its fan-base to justify going to Europe. If they did i would try to fly over and see some shows. The GD never did make it to Ireland, but, Furthur could certainly sell out a few shows in Dublin, I think. I propose a big outdoor gig at Slane Castle! Question: Any possiibility of coaxing Bill and Mickey into joining for awhile with a three drum lineup including Joe R? I can here this lush sound in my head. . ..

Anyone else get a call from dead.net confirming his or her order? I received a call today from John at dead.net (even though my caller ID said something else and it was a Maryland area code). He wanted to confirm my order. Now I know for certain that early orders with a confirmation code beginning with "DN" are good. Even my personalization was correct. It seems like the powers that be are being very thorough with the complete box sets, making sure orders are right and everyone has a chance to get one.

I recieved a call to confirm my intent to order multiple copies. My original order returned an error message, so I went ahead and ordered a copy using the reservaton method. According to dead.net both orders went through, so I released one back into the system.

Looking for a kind person who might have a spare code for the box set. Missed out on the initial offering because I recieved the notice after it was already sold out. Go figure. I was only 7 years old in '72 but I've been a deadicated fan for over 30 years now and 72 is to me the best year ever for the Dead. Pigpen was the one of the greats! I will forever be bummed that I did not get to see him live. While I'd prefer to see any spare codes go to fans who may have been at some of these shows, if you can't find someone like that to donate to then I'd gratefully accept. Will try and pass on to the universe any kindness shown. To start, I do have a small non-monetary token of appreciation in mind to share with any kind soul with a code.

If you want a code you must answer these questions correctly 1. What city did the Dead form their band in? 2. What was the Grateful Dead's name before that name? 3. What song was put away for several years and then brought back...it's almost a Dead staple song as well? 4. What great blues songwriter penned a 1995 song? 5. Name at least 2 post original members of the grateful dead...but they didn't have to be official members. Future releases for 2011 are 4 road trips and the tremendous box set...didn't hear about any single set releases from rhino or if any are being planned either...not bad for a band that hasn't made any new material in 17 years.

Anyone else want to make an attempt at winning a code by answering the questions below? This may be your last chance to get the set with book and music...not enough books on the dead and never enough music on the dead...never can have enough live dead shows or not so live dead, such as studio.

When the boxes arrive in September or October, who will be happiest - the person who gets box #1 or the person who gets box #7200 (knowing how lucky he was to be the last to make it onto the full box list)?

should make the effort to get to the Stein Auditorium on the campus of Drexel University on Thursday 24th where archivists David Lemieux and Kevin Shapiro (Phish) will be taking part in an open discussion about their archives with chosen released performances being played and discussed. Folks here still concerned about their bank balance will be glad to hear its free admission.

I got on the music-only list fairly early on Sunday of the first weekend, and hadn't heard more than a confirmation that I was on the music only list until today, when I got the standard "there are a limited number of (full) box sets available" email from Dead.net. This latest round of validation codes are set to expire on February 24th at midnight, a week from today. Through the great generosity of another E72 forum poster, I had already ordered my full box set, so I've passed the new code on, made my contribution to "E72 Gifted Code Gratitude" (just my title at checkout) at the Rex Foundation (very easy to contribute using PayPal), and of course, am preparing a nice m'o'bilia package for the one who gifted me. To quote Betty Boop, and others, "...the music goes 'round and 'round!" Just to say, take heart, your code may be on its way. So sign up for the music-only set if you haven't put your name in the hat at all yet, and good fortune to you and yours! Cheers, Laser

Again it is now down to a little over 8 hours until my extra code expires. If anyone is interested send me a message. All I ask is the person I give it too be a true fan. I guess I will have to make that judgement and hope I make the right choice so I don't see it up on ebay.
