Thanks for the explanation from us less technically knowledgeable souls. Does the same thing happen each time you save or copy a .wav file? From what I can gather from this topic, the answer would be no. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. A few weeks ago I tried converting an mp3 to wav just to see what would happen and the file ended up being a cda file when it was all said and done. cda files are the format you get if you buy a CD from the store. So I thought that was weird. I don't care that much as I would never convert mp3 to wav or flac anyways but I just wanted to understand it better... "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. flac vs mp3
A lot of you probably do not use audio editing software, but Mp3's are pretty much useless in that area. When I open a 50mb flac format song in Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition, it uncompresses to almost a gigabyte. Thats just one 10min song. I use this to get rid of tape hiss, or try and smooth over a tape flip. When I save the flac file in flac format it does not lose any information. I can open it and save it as often as I like and the information remains. Mp3's on the other hand will lose a little information every time I save them. For example, If the song were a painting: Compressing it in flac format would be like rolling it up and putting it in a tube. It would look the same the next time you open it. Compressing it in Mp3 format would be like folding it up and putting it in your pocket. Each time you opened it and put it away the folds and creases would get worse. A tale tell sign of an Mp3 in this condition is when no matter how loud you turn the voice and lead guitar sound muffeled. If you like Mp3's, cool. I use them in my Zen player and my wifes ipod. I dont see anything wrong with a Mp3 vine either. I sent That Nice Hippy Guy a Sublime concert in Mp3 format. It sounded pretty good! But please dont encode Mp3 back to flac. They will get mistaken for the real thing if the recipients of the file do not have the software to distinguish between the two. Thanks( I guess thats my 2 cents)

That's exactly what I do too. With a few CDs sprinkled in for good measure. I haven't found a way to flawlessly listen to my ipod in the car yet so that's where CDs are nice. but has anyone tested it? Just take take two cds, both with the same jam...one in mp3 format, one lossless (don't label which is which)...mix em up....and of course listen on the same speakers to control the experiment......after the fact write your guess as to which is which and see if u can tell a difference....I have not done this test myself but my theory is there would be no discernable difference between the two. That being said, I keep my shows in Lossless format on my external hard drive for archiving and compress to mp3 for personal use. "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Well, you have heard of lossless; MP3 is loss. If you convert the same audio file to wav and MP3, the MP3 file is smaller, and the bit rate is smaller too. Does it really matter? No. Does an MP3 sound good? Yes. But purists do not like MP3 because it does have subtle audio differences. Think of an MP3 as a second or third generation tape.

What exactly gets "lost" when converting to MP3?? I'm with some of you guys - I think MP3's on an ipod sound awesome. I haven't been able to figure out what I'm "missing" with an MP3?? Yeah man, I dig mp3 too...I generally convert all of my lossless to mp3 (and keep the shnflac on an external hard drive) Mp3's are smokin.... I can groove for hours on end with no break of the vibe....put in a fatty mp3 disc and call it a day!!! I love it!!! (plus I cannot tell a difference on my car stereo or home stereo for that matter...with most shows)BUT....I still keep my Lossless archive for future listening/conversions when mp3's are obsolete....shnflac or lossless allows your collection to last the test of time....and we all need something 'built to last' "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."

I too remember the not so distant days of trading tapes. mp3 at a decent bit rate puts me right where I need to be. Even when listening on headphones at high volume, every instrument is clear and crispy. I'll leave the archiving to the archivists, I want to listen. the 120gb of live Dead on my iPod keeps me groovin' down the road His job is to shed light, not to master...

Good morning everybody. I got the urgent message in my inbox to get over here. I have a lot of reading and catching up to do. I will say this, with all the new vines being proposed, I feel like I am drowning. There is SO MUCH stuff to keep track of. Thanks for all your efforts. I wish I had more to contribute.

Hey t140v77, Man if you want to make an additional copy that would go over seas that would be the best option in my opinion. I think we have done it both ways but a separate copy would cut the chances of it getting lost coming back over the pond greatly! Just my opinion. I will post it this weekend. It will include 6 shows from 1990 (10/27, 10/30, 10/31, 12/3, 12/4 and 1 other) plus 2 from '95 (that were on my list of Compendium picks posted here a while back) to fill up the second disc. I'm listening to a hot Help > Slip > Franklin's to open 10/31 as I type this. I'll start working on reseeding the 77 Part 4 vine once I am done with this. On an unrelated note, if anyone here subscribes to Hotfile and has some time to download a couple of shows (Rush and Rolling stones '81) let me know. I've gotten monthly passes in the past for both Hotfile and Rapidshare but lately I've both been too busy and haven't found much on the blogs I go to to find shows from other artists. Thanks!

All, Just in case you are interested, the GD is e-mailing people that have a reservation for the "music only" Euro 72 package. The e-mail has a code to be used to upgrade to a "Big Box". Apparently some orders are being cancelled. It looks like alot of people (including myself) booked multiple orders because of the problems early in the ordering process. Best Wishes-Jimmy

Vine loving freaks (and I mean that in a good way), Following dstache's 'Compendium Picks' for the 1990's, I will be starting what looks to be 2 vines for 1992, about 5 DVD's total. Some notes: 1)From the Compendium 1992 list, regretfully, I only have a couple of the March shows and I don't have 12/5 which really bums me out because those Tempe shows were always quite good, and that show in particular brings back a lot of crazy memories for me =) 2)The 5/21 show is included in Cal Expo '92 Vine which is still alive so I won't include it here 3)The 6/25 show is included on New 1990's Part 6 Vine but that one may be in trouble so we'll wait and see on that one 4)Other than that, I have everything else from the list including the amazing Las Vegas May run. Hey there,I have a few (4?) vines that I may have been holding on longer than I should.... I don't like to keep them more than a few days. I filled up my little hard drive with the few vines that I had already copied. I tried to delete out the junk I don't need but it didn't really help much. I just got back from my local Fry's and shoved a 1TB drive in the desktop....that should let me copy a couple more vines. I will be stopping by the post office tomorrow and will be updating the appropriate vines. I really don't know how you serious and long time viners store all the great music out there...thank goodness that storage is getting cheaper. Mike

Will hold a lot of vines my friend. Yeah I use ext HDs. I can get a 500GB Toshiba for about $50 at the local Sam's Club. I think that is a very reasonable price to pay to store 500-some shows, assuming 1 show is about 1GB in flac/shn format. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

I lost everyone's address in a computer crash so send them on to me. I am gone till Sunday but at that time will be putting a massive effort into mailing out vines. This show (Fort Worth, TX) was vined with the Mixed Bag I think. Now I think I have listened to as many shows as the average viner here. Now let me tell you something. I have heard quite a few "other ones," but this "one" is totally and completely addictive. The mix is great. But there is something about the heavy sounding drums & bass and guitar. I have been listening to this (Set 2) non-stop for several weeks since I got it. I just can't put it down. The 'Me and My Uncle" fits perfectly in between. On a scale, this is the #1 "truckin'/other one" combo so far that I have heard. It's rare for me to react to a show like this. Crazy man! Set 2 truckin->drums->other one->me and my uncle->other one->wharf rat

that I am really excited how well the vineyard is doing. I haven't seen it like this in some time. So I just wanna say thanks to all the old timers for reseeding a lot of this music and all the new guys for keeping it moving. There is quite a lot of vines here so I wanna say thanks to cosmicbadger for the vindex to keep track of all of this. It definitely makes it easier.

Thanks Jake. ....listening to 11/14/71 Set 2 again today. I think I have it figured out. The Other One here conveys a "sense of urgency" not found in other versions I have heard. I find myself batting my head with Phil's bass line as if I am on some one-way mission to save the world. The sense of urgency here is overwhelming and a hair stand up on your back kinda thing....
