As we close out the 2019 Dave Pick's series, we deliver on our promise to give you the "whole thing" with the complete performance from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA 3/24/73 and what a show it was! An upstanding "musical eulogy" to the recently departed Pigpen, the Grateful Dead conducted a potent study in contrasts on this bittersweet night. They found easy balance between tidy jams like "They Love Each Other," "Wave That Flag," "Playing In The Band," and introspective moments on "Stella Blue," "Sing Me Back Home," and a poignant "He's Gone." It was all laid down with a discipline and a polish unheard of in any of the truly exceptional shows that had come before it. Yes, you might say, they cleaned up nice to carry on the legacy as Pig would have wanted.

Limited to 20,000 numbered copies, DAVE’S PICKS VOLUME 32: THE SPECTRUM, PHILADELPHIA, PA 3/24/73 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the 7" and 10" reels by Jeffrey Norman.

Nightfall of Diamonds is sold out on this site. You should be able to grab a copy on eBay or Discogs for under $25.

Top notch Fall 89 show! Go for it.
Actually there is one on Discogs for $12.74. What a bargain!

Its interesting how the prices keep changing for some cds on here. I was dead lucky three weeks ago, getting a 7 disc FM recording on the New Years 1972 Winterland show. 1 disc The Sons of Champlin, 2 discs New Riders and 4 discs of The Dead, for a measly £8.77. Its since shot up to £27.25. Its not the best sound quality I have ever heard, but its okay, and for the price I paid something of a bargain.
I noticed last night the recently released three disc Blues set by Rory Gallagher has dropped in price drastically. Hard to resist - I didn't even try.

Thanks. Presumably the full version mentioned Gram Parsons death? The BBC showed Gram and Emmylou singing duets and then talked about her first, country, solo album ‘Pieces of Sky’ with no mention of why they stopped singing together.

Edit: I agree, Amazon.co.uk are usually very good with delivery dates which is why this last minute change surprised me. I have bought many items from them over the years and have been happy with the service. Of course, that is also true of dead.net, they always supply the ordered items eventually and that is all I need.

Second edit: the amount of editing may be less than it appears. Does PBS have ads? If they take up around 20 minutes per hour then the actual programme length would be c. 80 minutes. The BBC has no ads so the programs are c. 60 minutes each. If this is the case then only about a quarter of each program has been taken out.

    Colin,
The "Country Music" Burns doc was 8 Episodes, most were 2 hours long, but some were longer. I believe I read that the total length of the series was between 17-18 hours. I know it took me 2 weeks to get a chance to see the whole thing. But......TOTALLY worth watching in it's entirety!!
On another note, I have ordered from Amazon UK many times, and my last few shipments have come with an expected date, followed by an announcement of a "new" expected date. These have never been more than a few days, with the notable exception of Miles Davis "The Lost Quintet", which I ordered in July, but release date was changed numerous times(finally received it in November). again, well worth the wait.

P.S. Back in 1994, we Americans were shortchanged on the Beatles Anthology doc, only getting 5-6 hours, as opposed to the U.K. viewers getting 8 or so. I felt truly cheated until the (I started to say DVD) VHS version came out with at least 8 hours of awesomeness!!

Just to show that dead.net aren’t the only company with disappointing service; I ordered #12 from amazon.co.uk and delivery was expected on the release date 20th Dec. Up to 8pm on the 20th delivery was promised that day. At 8pm I got an email saying that due to an unexpected delay the item wouldn’t ship until mid Jan 2020 at the earliest and possible not until early Feb. You have to wonder how a cd can be delayed, so suddenly, for that long. The saving grace is that the music is available to be listened to on Amazon Unlimited so I’m hoping to find some time over the festive period to listen to it.

A question for US viewers of the series. I’ve just finished watching the 8 one hour episodes on the BBC in the UK. There is only a DVD version being advertised as released here and it doesn’t give any timing for the series although there are 8 discs. Looking at Amazon.com shows DVD and bluRay versions also with 8 discs. The product descriptions suggest that the series had 8 two hour episodes. Is this correct? I find it hard to believe they would take out half the content for European viewers.

Also really enjoying the new release. From the shows released, it stands out as unique from the others. I agree about Sara's contributions, this is well stated in the liner notes too.

Also, Garcia's playing is strong (as is the rest of the band). Alligator comes though brightly. A great addition.

Got to listen to Garcia Live Vol. 12!! Great stuff. You can ALWAYS tell when the band is having FUN!! Would not have guessed that Sarah Fulcher was a white woman on a listening only test. Powerfully strong voice. For that reason, I feel this is a unique entry into the discography. She absolutely TAKES OVER on some songs, but even then, you can hear how the rest of the band is delighted in leading/following her everywhere the tune takes them. A truly joyful listen.

To all: Be safe, Healthy, and (hopefully) Happy this Season of Joy.

Always look forward to these and this one will be awesome.

The variety of releases this year has been perfect. Next year should be another good one. What I would expect for 2020 Dead releases...

- 4 Dave's Picks (will subscribe as I have every year)

- Workingman's Dead 50th (with bonus early 70 show and whatever alternate mix is included)

- American Beauty 50th (same deal but hopefully with the so far untapped late 70 live show bonus, perhaps including one of only a handful of Til The Morning Comes, which should narrow down choices)

- Box (tbd)

- Two Record Store Day releases

- Meet Up at the Movies

I'm pretty satisfied with this year's variety, including the Ready or Not disc. Plenty of good stuff from Fall-90 onward.

Of course there'll be Jerry releases.

If you didn't subscribe this year, better jump onboard this one. Might even already be sold out before I finish typing. 2020 subscription announcements are just weeks away. They might have to up it to 25000 at this rate. Hooray!

So these normally get sold out within an hour or two - ESPECIALLY a '73 release.... Hoping they didn't somehow forget to post the Sold Out banner. If they suddenly have to announce they collected too many orders and cancel some folks' orders, get ready to duck, cuz it'll get crazy in here...

Spring '73. First batch of shows after Pig's passing. He's Gone. Sing Me Back Home. Etc.

But I have to admit to a certain level of Alpine '89 (7/17) level of frustration with every passing '73 release that is not RFK, Kezar, Dane County, or Roscoe Maples.

Though I get that Dave, in addition to wanting to provide diversity in terms of the year of the release, but also in terms of well-known/big tent shows and some lesser known shows.

Swing earlier in the year. Giants '91. Even the RSD from '80 were big tent shows. I get Dave going for a "lesser" known show here.

Well, I missed this one ... so I will probably have to go to a scalper on eBay . However, after previewing the listening party ... where are the cymbals? And the mix is a little weird ... some of the limited releases have been sub par ... this one almost is not broadcast quality... I understand it's always the source but if the source isn't that great ... how bout release it via download for a cheaper price ... ?

How come I get the email, click the link and it’s already gone? Maybe they should have a release time since some of us do t get the email until after it’s sold out? Literally clicked on the email which arrived a min earlier and gone. Not only that, my giants stadium box set had two damaged discs that weren’t even in their holders, but just floating around inside the paper cases and leading to them being damaged as well as the dvds not playing on any player. I’ve tried messaging rhino and gd, and nothing. Tried tweeting as well. Considering how expensive the set is, I’d like working discs and dvds. Thank you very much for not caring after you take my money.

WissinomingDH, I like the way you think.. though I am super stoked for this one.

Jason, I absolutely get what you are saying. Dave seems to be keeping some powder dry for tomorrow's battle and next year's picks and boxes, but I have always really liked this show. If I had a complaint, it is that the first set it soooooooooo long, makes it hard to listen to it in a single sitting. Oh, and cut the WTF (wave that flag, not the other wtf). How did they get this to fit on four discs.

Ursa, with the exception of 4/2/73 all the other 73 releases seem to get those comments. I can't disagree with you, but the performances usually outshine some minor technical anomalies and offset the caveat emptor label that used to come with these releases. I will take my 1973 warts and all. I'm not saying I disagree, just that this is a known known. It is what it is.

Great release, I want to get my grubbly little paws on it, rip it and slap on some headphones.

So at least on This Listener's ears, it can be a little jarring to go from one source of material to another when the recording quality is notably differing. With the GD, the era really defined The Sound, both how they played, but also how it physically manifested musically via the sound system. Older shows notably sound different than newer shows. The sheer span of the repertoire time frame invites a dynamic output over time. There's a curve for you.

Having just come off the Giants Box, with the pristine 24/48 track recordings, where you can hear every instrumental nuance, the ears have expectations that can be robbed if the listening experience suddenly changes. We all likely listen to different eras for very specific reasons, but there is gravity to those reasons for choices in that we are usually drawn to a particular song or show from an era, looking for that distinct, only Dead Sound that could be produced by, that era. This in turn can likely influence our reception of a source, perhaps subconsciously or perhaps not - at least its a possible theory.

Bottom line is, I think, as Jimmy alludes to, we all like it, warts & all, if it rocks.
Most of the time, it usually does.

I haven't listened to the listening party, so I can't say if the mix is weird or not, but I strike many as weird myself, so I'm sure it will even out for me.

PM MaryE, she will help you out. As for the BluRay not playing on your player, you are not the first person to note this, not sure how it gets/got resolved.

I can say, and this will not make you happy, I had a similar issue with my BluRay player about ten years ago with certain movies. Some would play, some wouldn't.. I finally bought a new one, 3d too, I think for like $80 and it sung my blues away. I don't know what the copy protection algorithms are, but I suspect the complexity and periodic updates might be contributing factors.

Feel free to reach out, if there is something I can do to help.. I will.

As for weirdness, I take that as a badge of honor. ..but Charlie3.5 is as rational and pragmatic as they come around here. Now where did I put that adel adel, it's way past supper time.

Sure, you sell out of 20,000 copies, many of which will show up for resale at twice the cost, but in the process you create ill will... if you can't give repeat customers a reasonable amount of time to buy a new release on the day you put it up for sale, you're going about things wrong...there's no limited seating here, and Jerry Garcia isn't playing live...

I was able to place my order at about 2:53 PM Eastern Time.
Reading through the comments, it appears that wissinomingdeadhead snagged 2 copies, one for himself and another to give away to a DeadHead who's down on their luck and/or health. If WissoDH got 2 copies, I hope he gives one away with a note saying not to resell on an auction site.
Great idea, if this is correct.

Speaking of extra copies of these wonderful Dave's Picks, I've got an extra copy of
"Dave's Picks 27: BSU Pavilion, Boise State University, Boise, Idaho 9/2/83" #9992
STILL SEALED.
All I'm asking here is that DaP 27 be used as a gift and NOT TO BE RE-SOLD anywhere. It's for the DeadHead who's down on their luck/health and want's to hears some 80's Grateful Dead or any Dead for that matter.
Also good for that newbie who wants a 1983 GD show.
TO BE GIVEN AWAY FREELY.

The answer should be clear, don't provide a diatribe, just subscribe.

The subscription is cheaper than buying each individual release. If you subscribe you won't need to keep track of emails or release dates. If you don't want a particular release, you can follow the example of the folks on this thread and give it away, or you can sell it and defray the cost of the releases you keep. Personally, if it wasn't for the resale market I wouldn't have some of the series from the years before I realized the innumerable benefits of subscribing. I'm not a reseller, but I really don't get the hate for those who are - they undoubtedly subscribe, probably multiple subscriptions, and that helps keep this whole enterprise going. If you subscribe, you will get a copy no matter how many folks are scalping their copy. If you don't subscribe and miss out on a release, you might be glad to pick up a copy from a reseller. Either way, the answer is to subscribe. Unless the point is just to complain about something that you could easily remedy.

BobT, I think the 7" and 10" are just the diameters of the reels of tape. I think 7" and 10" reels were the most common sizes. The width and speed of the tape during recording would affect the recording quality, but the 7" or 10" would just relate to the quantity of tape on the reel. So I would expect that the different size reels don't mean they are from different sources.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will provide a better answer.

Really looking forward to this show hitting my mailbox.
Another historical show in Philly's phinest oriphice.

Setting aside my nickels for next years Dave's Picks series.
Taking bets on next years release volume. I'd suggest there is room for a 25% increase to 25k numbered copies, but historically the bumps have been smaller in those "Days Before Johnny Checkers".

If you've missed out, just watch for an announcement around the holidaze for next years sub. Just do it, dude.
I'd say marketing has hit their mark just exactly perfectly.

Thanks Pink, Dave, and Dead.net!!

I just snagged one copy for my ALS afflicted friend. He lives at a nursing facility in Newtown Square. I (well the wife it's my Christmas present from her) subscribed last year on Halloween. It truly is about the music & not the money, yet I've had to get a few volumes off eBay for trading purposes, I NEVER resell I give & when I do the volume is always sealed & brand new. I've taken care of a few people here on this forum with free copies and didn't not even charge for shipping. If I have an extra SEALED copy I give it away, isn't that what you're supposed to do?

****The November Thirty Days of the Dead!!!****...Truly "the most wonderful time of the year". So no matter how bad things seem to get...It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia! Ha ha...I kill me

Man, you got to love the "Riverside Chat". What a life for our leader Dave!
4 hours plus until it sold out, I was way off.
Interesting to hear Dave talk about two separate recordings for this show with two separate mixes. I wonder how and why that happened, but I still think the returned 10 inch reels were recorded by Rex. Kidd Candelerio for the 7 inch reels?

Dave mentioned Dick's 36 from the Spectrum in September in 72 and he is right, this one rocks as well. Bear did a great job on that one.
Dave's 33, isn't there a show from the Spectrum in April 77? Long shot for sure. Still they will keep the 77 train rolling with this year. October?

I watched the riverside chat last night too.. different, and for the first time since 2012, no wind or Russian submarines or container boats in the background.

The nervous twitching this time around was bear related.. probably a valid concern, but he seemed to misdiagnose the mountain lion waiting, poised to pounce, just off camera at the very end.

Nice pickup on the $1,300 fly rod, but in Dave's defense he probably got it for free from the manufacturer. And then there's what at first glance appears to be a $180 Simms Fly Fishing Vest all decked out with related paraphernalia. A little over the top even for the most avid angler.. but a closer inspection reveals this to be a $4,700 top of the line Simms GPS Enabled, Motion Detecting Sasquatch stalking vest. A must have for any serious Big Foot enthusiast. It fills in some of the gaps and clues from some of other river and seaside chats, the log-rolling video from 2014 comes to mind.. of course you need to brush up on your log rolling skills if you ever expect to safely evade an irate, perhaps hungry, short tempered British Columbia Sasquatch. Have you ever seen a 9 foot tall Big Foot successfully log roll across a swift moving, salmon-filled river? It's not gonna happen and Dave's gonna escape from these monsters, unscathed every single time.

Anyway.. this video seems to give a more complete picture of the real Dave, although it does little to resolve the ongoing rumors that Dave was replaced by a Rhino manufactured robot or cyborg back in 2015.

I think we should convince Hasbro to make a David Lemieux version of GI Joe, the David Lemieux Fly Fishing, Sasquatch Stalking Action Figure. ..unless of course Rhino is already in conversations with Mattel to make the David Lemieux Ken Inspired Action Figure complete with Barbie's younger, hotter, tie-dye wearing hippie sister Loose Lucy? Either way it's win/win.

Next up, the 2020 Dave's Picks 33 Paragliding Cliff-Side Chat. "Whooe, close call.. was that a Peregrine Falcon? I'm gonna turn the camera around right after I land on this rock outcropping in the field below. ...so like I was saying, can you hear me through the wind? Great show, hit pause on the video right now and buy this because it's not going to last long."

...also caught the 'riverside chat' last evening, a different twist on his usual waterside rants. Admittedly, he was as antsy as ever, lookin' over his shoulder for bears and other potential stalking wildlife. He was giddy as a school boy to zoom in on a deer at the end.

I think a decked-out action figure of Dave would be amazing. It would come with a special thumb drive that directly connects to the vault via wifi so you can stream any show directly from the source. That's just one gadget included along with a 1/6 scale version of the $1300 fly rod. It also comes with night vision goggles so you can pretend your Dave is truly hunting 'Squach under the moonlight. Midnight Moonlight.

Oh yeah I also found it interesting about the apparent dual-recordings that were taken during this show with the two sets of reels. I think I recall he said this was among the batch of returned reels from a few years back - is that right? If so that might explain the discrepancy or variation in the source material sound.

I don't usually post much but I read everyday. I love this site. Everybody contributes of course in their own way. I forget the gentleman's name who always supplies the album artwork from his computer scanner. There's a ice cream cone kid who like many just seems to be a wealth of knowledge on all of the releases and I'm not too shabby myself and I learn stuff from ice cream come kid. JimInMD you are the perfect mix of humor and Grateful Dead knowledge. I was having a crappy morning for the most part every day this week and little bits of humor when I wake up on this site are a great way to start the day. And Jim, I always see you try to mediate when a big brouhaha erupts on the message board. Vguy your one liners are classic. King of the one-liners. Can you tell the two priests joke again? Divorce papers haha! Or Keithfan just your little joke yesterday about how you keep buying extra copies just to feed the urge and get it to your mailbox quicker . KeithFan2112 I don't know if you are a writer or a music critic or both but you tell some funny stories like that Star Wars scene from the other day, and I'm also pretty sure you wrote the review on heady version about The Other One (am I right?). But you also have an ear for what is going on within a song. Stoltzfus you are also a king of one-liners and I'm happy to see you figured out how to pick an avatar for your screen name. May I suggest something more dead like? Spacebrother your knowledge of the 80s is second to no one. If I may suggest you could also use an upgrade to your avatar even if it's just a different picture of Marvin the Martian.
There are many more too many to mention I should really say everyone is included in the personality of this website. I am saying all this because times have been tough lately and this place brings a smile to my face.

I also watched it last night, and what caught my eye was the psychedelic pattern on Dave’s chest of the sun reflecting off the water. It was constantly moving around as he stood there and talked. Nice psychedelic addition.
2 sets of master reels, neither complete, although it sounds like the 7 inch reels are just used for filler. Wonder if the 7’s are from the soundboard and the 10’s are from behind or side stage.

I don’t know anything about fly fishing, although I did see that SYF reel before for sale, didn’t realize it costs that much. The other side should have been printed like a 10 inch tape reel. I assume those forceps attached to Dave’s vest are for removing the hook from a fish’s mouth, but I’m curious if the tips have burn marks on them.

Dark Star, glad you find my comments informative. There are a lot of people on this site that know more than me, so I try to pick up from them. Being that I am a Touch Head, I don’t have the extensive tour experience going back to the old days, so it’s good to hear those stories from those folks. And every now and then you get early 70’s stories from people like Hendrixfreak, Hbob, etc. I think Nappyrags and/or JeffSmith attended UCSD in the early 70’s and got to see a bunch of Cali shows, so those stories are fun too.
I don’t think that we have ever heard from anybody who attended the Winterland 74 Last Ones. I would like to hear from the two guys arguing during intermission about the fact that a movie was being made. The guy with blond hair and a mustache even gave his name to the other guy. I suspect that the guy who claimed that the movie was a rip off went to the theater to see the movie.

Anyway, as this new GS Box proves, at least during the years that I saw shows the sound quality was excellent and the boys could still put on a show. The 91 Drums/Space sounds amazing.

Today’s anniversary is the final CA Earthquake, 10-23-89.

Yes, somebody on the GS Box page confirmed that some older DVD players need a firmware update.
Skip the update and upgrade to a BluRay player, it will still play your DVDs.
