    As we close out the 2019 Dave Pick's series, we deliver on our promise to give you the "whole thing" with the complete performance from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA 3/24/73 and what a show it was! An upstanding "musical eulogy" to the recently departed Pigpen, the Grateful Dead conducted a potent study in contrasts on this bittersweet night. They found easy balance between tidy jams like "They Love Each Other," "Wave That Flag," "Playing In The Band," and introspective moments on "Stella Blue," "Sing Me Back Home," and a poignant "He's Gone."     Origins and artwork

    I wake up each morning, eagerly hoping to learn of a release from 1968, so imagine my disheartenment(?) when I saw that the Origins graphic novel special edition would have unreleased music from 1968 ONLY IN LP FORMAT! I hope that the powers-that-be see fit to make a CD version of the Origins set, or release the music on a disc. Please!

    The artwork on the singles collection is so beautiful and original. I have purchased them all, even though I don't have any means to play them! Perhaps one of those artists could be hired for the Dave's Picks series, or the mandate (if it exists--I doubt it) that the DaP art must be skeleton-themed could be relaxed? Or maybe there could be beards on the covers, but no skeletons? :) First-world problems, to be sure . . .

    First.. USam, I'm sorry to hear this news.. the silver lining is they seem to have been discharge from the hospital.. Let's hope for as full, complete and speedy recovery as possible and sending positive vibes your way. I get what you're saying though.. these issues affect us all, no one is immune and hospitalization often leaves us at the bottom of a valley with a huge financial hill to climb. My dad spent a couple months in the Neuro ICU a few years ago, the final bill was more than $1M. He's ok now though thanks to a very skilled neurosurgeon in Richmond (and the resulting proud owner of my Fillmore West 69 the complete recordings box set, we called it even St. Stephen [kidding of course]).

    KF.. sorry to disappoint, but I as an avid Rush fan myself, I am ok with the twist on words.

    Enjoying the positive vibes here lately too, and some I think very honest and on point reviews of recent releases. Nice deep dive on '73. I see the points made on the good and not so glowing comments too.. there is some unevenness to '73, especially in the first sets. Sometimes they seemed to somehow fit ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag (or more accurately 4 1/2 hours of music on a three disc release). 1973 always has that work in progress feel to it, but it also opens the door to some of the more creative, free flowing jammy GD that grew that year and seemed to peek (at least to me) in 74, losing some of it's luster during hiatus. 73 contains it's own bag of tricks..

    Finally.. just delving into the song list on the January 73 Jerry release announced this week. I'm salivating.. there's some takes on songs I have never heard them play here.. and it's a Rex/Betty multi-track? Say what! These had to have been returned as part of the lost stash. Aren't we a lucky bunch?

    Yesterday was Give to the Max Day here in Minnesota; people are encouraged to use that site that day to give money to various MN charities and non-profits. So that day always reminds me to come on here and gently encourage people to go make donations to The Rex Foundation and Archive.org, two non-profits near and dear to Deadheads' hearts.     thank you all for the good reads, Vguy, good vibes sent your way, hang in there. I too have had a bad couple of months with family in the hospital. All is better now but the bills, over a quarter of a million for hospital stay, how can they justify these prices? one bill is for a nurse, not a doctor, to visit weekly, she is here for about 10 mins, that will be 189.50$ please. Medicaid, here we come. Never in my life have I not been able to pay a bill, but this one I guess the state will have to pick up. In this state, you can't have any assets over 3,000$ to qualify for Medicaid, so now we must become wards of the state. nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile and thank the universe that all pulled thru. Unfortunately, the prognosis is not that great and there will be many more visits to the specialists and the primary dr that will only increase this financial burden, but how do you put a cost on a loved ones life? You can't. I guess this will be the last year that I will be able to justify the expense of a Dave's Pick subscription, the state only accepts expenses that are essential and necessary, and according to them, the calming, therapeutic effect of Grateful Dead music does not qualify.
    One thing is for sure, if you do not have insurance in this country, do not get sick, it will ruin you plus you will receive sub standard care, as you are now officially a "charity case". How did it get this bad? Why have all the health care professionals let this happen? What's worse is everyone knows it's all fucked up, but yet, they allow it to continue and do nothing but say "it's all messed up but that's what we have to work with". I do believe that the one candidate that stands up and says enough is enough about this health care crisis would win any election hands down, unfortunately, the insurance companies and the drug companies and the medical professionals will never let that happen, all in the name of greed.

    No, but thanks. :) Wait. Unless that goes into a 20-minute Victim and then one of those super-slow Terrapins with no jamming. :-O

    I used to dutifully slog my way through every Lovelight, until the recently-released one where Pigpen talks about getting a gun to shoot a woman while he says something to this woman about, "Get out of here, C#%T!!" That put me off "Love"light (and to an extent, Pigpen) for good.

    And yes--I, too, have had some damaged/defective discs the past few years, after having nothing but good luck for decades.

    This October through December of 1973 stretch might be the Dead's best ever, to my ears. My notes for DaP 5 (11/17/73) ask if disc 2 is the best hour of GD EVER. I'm seeing a lot of 'A+' marks in my notes for this fall run.

    On this day in GD history, they only played four shows...

    1969 Lanai Theater, CA: Pig-fest with an Easy Wind, Next Time You See Me, Boss Man, Good Lovin', and a 48min Lovelight, for those into that sort of thing. However, I can't seem to find a decent recording - even the Charlie Miller transfer sounds muddy and warbly.

    1971 Austin, TX: So hot, they released it as a Road Trips... Fall of 71 is smoking! 1st set Dark Star>El Paso>Dark Star, interesting and well played 2nd set that just EXPLODES into NFA>GDTRFB>NFA!

    1972 OK City: Fall of 72 - the greatest period of Dead ever? I don't know, but I know it's in the conversation... All around solid show - 1st set begins with Bertha, Beat It On Down the Line, Bird Song...BBB... Bobby is mixed WAY high in the beginning of Bertha, and you can't really hear the rest of the band, but it's pretty cool to hear Bobby isolated, and the mix settles in about half-way through. 2nd set features a 30-min Playin, followed by Big RxR, which I think is a pretty great spot for that tune.     What a disappointing morning

    There's a title to a post called Re: Moving Pictures that has nothing to do with the Rush album, and there is another title to a post called Dark Star that has nothing to do with the song.

    Streaming - not for me at this time. I only listen to the Dead and there is nothing that can replace my phone system where I have every release in chronological order plus soundboards in a second chronologically ordered list. To my knowledge there's still a ton of Grateful Dead limited edition material that you just can't get on the streaming services. Once in a while I'll pull out something different, but it doesn't make up for nearly the time I spend listening to the Dead so it would just be a waste of money. My last phase was the Rolling Stones leading up to 50th anniversary. That went on for about two years before I re-engaged the Grateful Dead.

    Would love to know how artists and record companies make money anymore with all the streaming in piracy. It doesn't even sound possible to me but maybe I just needed properly explained. If I had to guess, I would say there is a direct correlation between streaming and piracy, and the high price of concert tickets. I have a feeling artist don't make nearly what they used to off of their recorded music from the studio oh, so they have to make their money on the road. But as far as I'm concerned I've seen all the good groups and I'd be surprised if a new one came along that caught my interest.

    Dick's Picks 23 is rocking my optimal right now. Bobby comes through loud and clear on me and my uncle, and Tennessee Jed is no slouch either. And there's a 40-minute other one coming up... And then I'm going to listen to November 14th 1971, because I rarely go to that one and the ravings are out.

I just subscribed for Dave's Picks 2020. I can't wait, had to do it right away. I am really excited for Vol 33 10/29/77. I had it on tape back in the day and I haven't listened to it in at least a decade or more.

If anyone who complained about getting shut out of Vol 32 are reading this, now is the time. The subscription is up , go and get it. Even with the increase to 22K , these will all still sell out fast.

Got my shipping notice this morning. Psyched for this one. The Winterland box set really opened my ears to '73, a year I didn't previously pay much attention to. (I was young -- the tapes sounded "old". Live and learn). They've since become some of my favorite shows.

Now if the Giants box set would only find its way into my mailbox...

This is a fine sounding show that I’d love to have as an official release. The unofficial cd available in the UK sounds good to my ears.

The advice on the DaP 2020 page is to turn off the WiFi on your phone and then you will be able to place an order.

I just placed one in the cart using a Mac with Safari, but didn’t complete the purchase.

That's an old memory butch. I also became obsessed with the amityville murders. He tried to blame it on LSD at one point. You are correct on the not hearing back on the Dap32 time question. All lies. Also he never tells the limited ed.# which is a clue.-----I'm in in 2020 sub.. peace

A nice little anniversary show, will certainly see the light of Norman one day. Did someone mention Fall '73.

I have been wondering that for a long time. He disappeared from here in 2011 when either he ended his writing relationship with Rhino or they pulled the plug on Blair's Golden Road and other contributions on official releases. I don't recall him writing for any of the 30 trips shows or anything else since? Has anyone else noticed something I missed??

His Golden Road blogs are still here at dead.net, albeit a bit hidden.

Note that his absence corresponds with the low point in sales for archival releases (the Road Trips rock bottom). This came about half-way through their $10M ten year contract with the band for release rights from vault recordings initiated in 2006. It also corresponds with a turning point in releases, clearly focused on stimulating more demand and most certainly trimming costs. They opted for letting out bigger box sets (E72 anyone) and migrating to the limited release model (Dave's Picks and limited #'s on boxes). Get em, pull the trigger or forever be a slave to the secondary market. (From their perspective, this worked btw.. we went from 12k copies to 22k copies in nine years).

So Blair went by the roadside replaced with David Dodd's The Greatest Story Ever Told, which I also miss. It didn't last all that long, but was a great read.

The GSET was replaced by … well, nothing. There's no direct proof I can find that Blair disappeared to cut costs, but I have to suspect this was at least partly the cause. I do miss his monthly blog. The whole thing sort of got replaced by us.. and we're quite free.

Blair still appears on Jerry Garcia Band liner notes. I think he is one of the best, and his liner notes are a joy to read.

Hey Jim, thanks for the info.

I thought his departure was within the last couple of years, but I could be wrong about that.
I thought he wrote some of the early Dave's liner notes, #1 and #7. I also thought he was listed as co-producer on Dave's 1, or maybe that was the Winterland 77 box. I always thought it was odd that to introduce the series for Dave's Picks, the liner notes were written by Blair and not Dave. Anyway, I miss his writings and his knowledge of all the tours and music. Where did he go?

I love Blair, felt like in the old days at least, like he was one of us, as compared to one of them 😉 meaning just a head, and not an employee if that makes sense? Remember when there was no internet, (BOOOO HALLOWEEN, I just scared the shit outta the youngsters!) and usually very little media coverage.......we so looked forward to the Golden Road!

I guess I may be a bit biased, but this is a pretty good show. We arrived a bit late ( it was her fault - honest!) and the band were already stuck into Help-Slipknot-Franklins by the time we arrived . I could tell even before we entered the hall, standing in the foyer, that this night was going to be better than the previous one. I couldn't believe they were playing like THIS so early in the night.

Dap 32 and Bob Dylan's Bootleg 15 (cd & vinyl) both showed up today :-)

Quick check of #32 shows sound to be just a 1/2 step better that what I had in stock.

Just got my Dylan Bootleg 15, as well, PLUS The Doors Soft Parade 50th box. Dave's 32 arrives on Monday. It's going to be a good week for some music appreciation.
