Just like the singular Cornell, just like the one later called Sunshine Daydream, just like hallowed Hampton, DeKalb stands legend on its own as one of the most sensational performances the Grateful Dead ever did do. Early tape-trading circles earmarked the show as upper-echelon and when you have a listen, we're sure you'll be inclined to agree. The original reel-to-reel recordings have been shined and polished to perfection, showcasing mighty fine fret work, sparkling keys, and unparalleled harmonies. In fact, we can hardly pick favorites - from start to finish, there's just too much good stuff!

    Regarding Neil

Is truly sad. I have been on a bit of a rush kick for several months after not really listening to since high school. Been getting a bit of Dead fatigue and Rush is basically polar opposite and forgot how much I loved them. Although spinning 2/28/69 so guess I'm not too fatigued...

Stumbled on this quote from Neil Peart on Mickey Hart "I remember talking to Mickey Hart during our last tour," Neil continues. "I had written to him after having read his excellent book, Drumming On The Edge Of Magic. So he gave me a call and that's how we hooked up. Seeing the Grateful Dead was impressive, realizing just how much improvisation goes on at their shows. Mickey told me that some nights a Dead show is dull; the improvisational thing just won't get going. Yet on other nights it's just magical. It's a risk that the band takes every night, and their audience takes that chance too. I respect the band for having the courage to do that.”

    Amen!

Or mourning is more like it. A fellow dead Net post ER emailed me today. Of all the rock and roll deaths Neil peart's has really bummed me the fuck out. Aside from the Grateful Dead, which was an acquired taste that came a little bit later in life for me, despite my having seen them two times with Jerry, I basically had four primary favorite groups. The who came first, well actually kiss came 1st, but mind left body is probably the only character here who can appreciate how good kiss was considering how atrocious there lyrics were. Then there was rush and yes. For some reason Entwistle and Squires death did not affect me quite the way Neil peart's has. Can explain. I love them all the same. But anyway this was the 4th or 5th email I received asking where I've been. While I have just about every note they played on my phone, the Sirius Radio tribute was something special. Lots of interludes of interviews between songs, Etc I even ran into an old DJ used to call on either WMMR or wysp in Philadelphia, Earle Bailey. Rush was the most consistent touring band of the ones I mentioned. They really were like returning friends when we would go see them. My brother, my Buffalo cousin and me. Rush did not have have casual fans. I imagine they were like the Grateful Dead was prior to the Mega Dead eras that was ushered in by Touch of Grey. For all intents and purposes there were never any bands changes and they never fought amongst themselves. It was like the same 20000 people came to the Arenas every tour. You either got it or you weren't there. And they knew that and they knew us. The setlist and Stage shows got better and longer the older they got because unlike this dick heads Simmons and Stanley who were famous for saying the fans are there boss, despite a history of ripping off the fans, rush really did do it for us, and because they enjoyed what they were doing. They were our underground cult band, and they had no rival at what they did. Every writing band has its prime, and Rush had its share of mediocre songs past its prime, but they always had at least half an hour bh'em worth of solid Rush Tunes. And their final swan song in the studio was probably the best record they made since their only mistake in my humble opinion, which was firing Terry Brown they're producer for their first 10 albums, including the live ones. I kind of leave the first album out of the statistical and historical timeline because, let's face it, there's nobody on this planet I believe so John rutsey play drums at a rush concert.

So that's where I've been. I got a 3 month free trial subscription for Sirius radio and have been enjoying the homage to Neil. I had barely listened to a note of anything other than the Grateful Dead since April of 2014, when I saw Sunshine Daydream on the Shelf at Barnes & Noble. I had about 12 to 15 Dead shows up until then, but only Cherry Picked what I felt were the better songs. Then Europe 72 came after Sunshine Daydream oh, that the days pics subscription, and so on. This is a rambler of a post sorry I'm in the car. But I've been back into the dead a little bit and quite frankly there's nothing like the other one from 1971.

Dave's Picks 33 will sell out on or just before 1 February 2020. If not, shortly thereafter 1 February 2020. Sorta similar (but not exactly) to the first year of this series.
I bought the 2020 subscription, I forgot I did and ordered a copy the other day.

Stoltzfus...started this one earlier after you mentioned it. Third disc is indeed special....GDTRFB right now!

Funny enough the second disc into disc 3 is similar to DeKalb from the standpoint of setlist.

    Pretty nice rendition.
First version played? Is this a new game? I'm in. Sugar Mags took a while to gain it's footing. The first few weren't very good. Same could be said for Picasso Moon. "Dammit Bobby!" - Hank Hill.

I also love that first Terrapin from 2-26-77.

It has a unique melody in the Lady With A Fan solo, that's different from all the others played subsequently. In later versions, The LWAF solo was one where Garcia played essentially the same melody time after time, but not this one.

My choice for first version played = best version would be the Wharf Rat from 2-18-71. To me, it has a tension (nerves?) and intensity in the vocal that's not quite as present in later versions.

Surprised this one hasn't sold out yet.

    Here’s what’s on my menu:

Finishing up the newly released Widespread Panic Carbondale 2000 show on vinyl. This is one of my favorites from them and the vinyl pressing and sound quality elevate it to new levels.

Also recently spun WSP Montreal 97, which also sounds great but had some skips.

Love me some Thelonius Monk and recently picked up a nice used copy of Monk’s Dream.

Warren Zevons new pressing of Excitable Boy sounds awesome and is glow in the dark...great for howlin at the moon while drinking beer!

My biggest problem right now is that most of my pants shrunk over the holidaze. My wife says its all the beer I drink. Still trying to figure out WTF that has to do with my pants shrinking? I’m having a problem and she wants to talk about my alcoholism...ugh!

It’s Friday so just popped opened a King Sue Double IPA from Topling Goliath in Decorah, IA. Big brother to my favorite beer Psuedo Sue which I found out is actually labeled a Pale Ale as opposed to an IPA....and this whole time I thought I was drinking an IPA, go figure....doesnt change my opinion though.

Later tonight down to Knuckleheads to see my favorite Dead cover band The Schwag. Good drink, good smoke, great people and even better music. Jimmy Tebeau may not be the best fake Jerry, but he’s my favorite and he’s a bass player!

Can’t wait, and then next week KCs on to the Super Bowl to play the 49ers of San Francisco, home to the GOGD...Sorry Bob, but if I have my way, you’ll be singing the blues next Monday!

Be well freaks (Ain’t Life Grand?!)

    KCJ

Edit: Love that article on bluegrass and Z Buds. I like that Billy Strings is right out front with it. I’m making efforts to do the same lately. Eff prohibition. For those interested Billy’s live streaming from Tippitinas for free tonight:

Glad to see a new Dave’s Picks 33 is going to be
sent out soon. With some luck I just might get this one in a reasonable amount of time . Why would one say that considering that the company that sends them out takes great care to see that us ,or me , the customer is treated right and mistakes are kept to a minimum. Folks this is a joke of course
I still haven’t received Dave’s Picks 32 which was released in November. Have I called customer service .....yes......have I called the shipping plant ......yes.......has anything happened......NO......BTW .......Dave’s Picks 31 took over 2 months to get to me .......do I live in some foreign country ......NO.........I live in Brooklyn...........The reason was the package was addressed without my apartment number and returned to them whom say “it takes 6-8 weeks to rectify “ This hasn’t happened once but 2 times in a row ..........what is the definition of insanity..........trying the same the exact same way and expecting different results.......The real insanity is that no one cares at customer service in this company. It’s almost criminal to be treated this way . Over a simple thing as addressing a package correctly. Yes it’s strange but true and I have a subscription. So folks enjoy Dave’s Picks 33 ........I might receive 32 by maybe July and 33 by next Christmas

Long time fan, but first time ordering from this site. How long does it take before these pre-orders actually ship to us, please? Thanks in advance!

Hey Frobodine, love that avatar. Looks like conekid was correct as they have moved the released on date up to January 24, so in theory some will start receiving them on Friday. Last year mine always came at least five days after the release date. Let's hope that changes this year.
Another classic seaside chat. Only 9 minutes, shortest I can remember and yes, was that women skinny dipping? I couldn't tell.
Hidden tracks. That would be awesome. Remember Dick's 13 with that hidden Scarlet Fire from 1979, was that 35 minutes? Dicks 29, hidden tracks from the fall 1977.
That would be sweet!

I get soccer jerseys shipped on a regular basis from Ukraine, Russia, Malaysia, Chile, and other questionable regions...never had any issue, but the GOGD can't get me a small packet from Tennessee to Illinois.

On an actual note about the show, it rocks! Love the 2nd set.

How about the 4 missing songs from Toronto, Canada 11/2/77 (the first 4 songs from the 2nd Set)? These are:

1. Samson And Delilah
2. Ship Of Fools
3. Good Lovin'
4. Sunrise (this was released with 30 Days Of Dead 2015, but does anyone really care about this song?)

The rest of the show was released in 2 parts as bonus material with DP34 & DaP12. As a completist I can't resist asking for the remainder!

Strange dude, but funny, another one of my heroes gone. RIP Terry.
This release is a good one, had it for years on a bootleg CD that sounds pretty darn good, but these will be from the reel to reel, the actual reel to reel of the show, this is going to sound awesome, can't wait for this one to hear it again, only different, and better.
To all who have been ripped off, Man, I feel for you all and hope that this debacle gets rectified. I do wish that, as another head stated, Dave would address this issue, it is criminal that these fine folks have not received their merchandise. Has any one tried to get the charge taken off their credit card bill? I went this way a couple of times in the past and I did not have to pay for the product and did not have to send it back if it was defective. Don't know if that's possible since they charge up front for all 4 releases, but it's worth a try. I know Discover will go out of their way to make sure that you are happy. Too bad that's not the case with this company. Angry Jack Straw, ticket prices are too high. ;)

Somebody's pissed there's no bonus tracks.

If they were expected to be on there they wouldn't be bonus would they?

Some people will never be happy.

...PM'd you.

In other news, can't wait for this release. Sure, some disc 2 filler would be great, let's see what we get. It will be a fine show regardless.

In other other news, I finally relistened to the Closing of Winterland set (12/31/78), which some of you fine folks were talking about on New Year's Eve. Haven't listened in quite some time. Holy smoke, what a great show. That 3rd disc combo of drums (with a harmonica squawking in the background) into a smoking Not Fade Away is just killer. Sure made my commute to & from work fly by today :-)

I think the eBayers are buying less now that there are so many available. They must be having a more difficult time making a profit now that there are so many to compete with on eBay. There are also a lot of 1977 releases out there. It's not like 1973 where there was a ton of improvisation going on so a lot of the shows sound the same in 77. Just my 2 cents. And I just realized MacArthur Court 78 was released on this day.

Maybe another reason they are not sold out yet because word has been filtering around of all the trouble people had or are having actually getting their orders. I don’t know how widespread the issues are but on IG and on YT (for the recent vid at least) you’ll find people complaining.
Not having piece of mind that orders will be shipped is a big hassle and can easily make some with limited funds not even wanna mess with it.
It’s a shame, really.

Just listening to the listening party -- I have to say that when Keith switched to using the Yamaha electric grand in the Fall of 77, to me anyway, the overall richness of the band sound lost something that an integral part of their sound up to that point. It just doesn't add another dimension to the sound the way a real grand piano did, and keith never sounds as inspired on it.

I'm sure it's a factor. I cannot believe they don't have a customer service function that works.. they need to fix this and the warehouse issue in 2020. These functions might cost money.. but they are not insurmountable and Rhino has other product lines besides the Grateful Dead to service and protect.

How does the story go? Don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg?

The other half is they are and have been dancing around the edge of demand. From 20k to 22k makes a big difference and they have released a lot of shows to this point.. How long has it been since you guys have listened to Dicks Picks #1?

Still, this is a top shelf 1977 show and it will be in high demand. I am surprised it has not sold out yet.

There is just no way that DISC-2 only has 3 songs on it...and one of them is good lovin….and another one is FOTD?!?!?!

There has got to be some filler hidden on that disc, but looking at the time of play for the last song(Friend), it's not like there is a total of 42-43 minutes for that track like say Dick's Picks #13 with the hidden Scarlet>Fire....with all the chatter about not selling out, I've got to guess that DISC-2 is contributing to that. This certainly is far & away the longest any of the Dave picks has remained not sold out for.

Couple things, still amazed Pacific Northwest box is still available, given that a lot of people like that time period. It was 15,000 copies at about $190... I wonder what percentage of subscribers buy the yearly box release? Giants Stadium box was 10,000 copies i believe and around $150.. Get shown the light box, was the last box that put us all in the panic mode of stop everything or I won't get this... Also I know there has been discussion on here that Dead & Company were adding to demand, but is that audience more into streaming instead of looking at the "Album cover"??? The world will never know. be good everyone bob t

I agree RV3 - what a waste.

As most of us know, the show itself is great, but it is such a shame that they would release something with 3 "1st set-type" songs on an entire disc - it's under 25 minutes! Dave's 7 was like that too, but at least that one had a Scarlet>Fire on it. (To this day, that remains one of my least favorite of the series, and that scant disc 2 is totally a factor.) It's not like there is a shortage of material they could use to fill out that time. I wonder if Dave and Co. have decided to hold everything they deem to be releasable back as possible future releases. I have not yet had a chance to watch the seaside chat - does Dave mention anything about this?

Here's hoping there is something hidden there, but I am not going to hold my breath.

Peace
