Just like the singular Cornell, just like the one later called Sunshine Daydream, just like hallowed Hampton, DeKalb stands legend on its own as one of the most sensational performances the Grateful Dead ever did do. Early tape-trading circles earmarked the show as upper-echelon and when you have a listen, we're sure you'll be inclined to agree. The original reel-to-reel recordings have been shined and polished to perfection, showcasing mighty fine fret work, sparkling keys, and unparalleled harmonies. In fact, we can hardly pick favorites - from start to finish, there's just too much good stuff!

Carlo; it’s funny you bring up after the shows.....many times it would be the usual suspects, who were all pretty familiar with each other and our song/show likes/dislikes, and often we’d all be on a mostly similar plane, but just as often, if there were five of us in the car, damn if we’d wouldn’t have 5 different opinions lol. And being hardcore dead freaks, that meant the conversation could get fairly heated....that’s one of the things I miss most; arguing about the shows afterward. Nothing like a dead head with a strong opinion! 😉

MEXICALI; like take Mexicali, personally I always liked that one. And unlike many of those Bob cowboy songs and endless repeats that I’ve gotten burnt on over the years, I still don’t mind that one. But I’ve noticed that many folks here don’t like it or are burnt on it....too funny!

Deadvikes 3/27/88; I think Jim was there, me too, Schroomin in front of the SB. I recall that one blew me away. That second set was smoking! Both of us have commented that like others, the release does not do that show justice. I’m certainly glad I have it, and can enjoy it, but this one and Dicks Six Just don’t capture the full essence of how good these shows were live. Not sure about Jim, but I think the recording is partially to blame....As far as the “Hallowed halls of Hampton” I’d figure more 89, but when I first read that I took it to mean the venue over all the years combined etc. They played so many great shows, firsts, or first returns over the years, and there was just something about the place? Besides the layout, it was always GA for the 10 shows we caught there, the sound was decent as far as those types of venues go, and they just seemed to usually play well. Of course the whole 89 Warlocks vibes took it to legendary status if it wasn’t already. Probably my favorite indoor venue?
Sorry about the Viks, I thought they had a shot there at the beginning, but both Conference Champs look really tough. Hopefully it will be a good game?

WODGE; what a great word. The English have so many great words! As far as wodges go, I’ll take a big Wodge of Black Hash por favor!

DAVES ETA; tracking said it left Denver yesterday about 1:30....normally, it’s a 2 and a half hour drive, so should get it tomorrow, but bet I won’t...(no home delivery in the boonies) bastards used to drop em in a locker so we could pick up anytime, but they’ve been making us go to the counter last couple of releases and they can sometimes take days just to process etc. So I’m trying to not get my hopes up, but it would be nice to blast that puppy over the weekend...
Hope all y’all get to enjoy it this weekend.

I think its kind of funny how each Dap concert gets tons of positive or negative reviews but can you imagine if we were all transported to that very concert at this very time at the start of the first set. Then after the show in the parking lot I believe there would be a very different conversation going on while drinking a warm beer and some eats. I think when we were all young there was a brain filter that prevented us from looking to close at the things that really dont matter. If that makes sense.

PRETTY FRUSTRATING that there is no "filler" on disc-2

First off- Dave Picks #29-31 ALL have some nice filler on one of the disc in addition to the full show of each release....Dave Pick #32 does not have filler, and my guess would be simply that it doesn't need it. That show from 1973 is stellar, with extremely long setlists.

With that said- I just find it hard to believe that disc-2 of Dave Pick #33 does not have filler(hidden or not)?!?! I mean it is a full disc for exactly 3 songs, none of the songs are out there or real Jammy….again one is Good Lovin'(happens to be the Dead song I like the least behind Mexacali Blues). We can only hope that he has a big surprise for Dave Pick #35, hopefully it is 7/13/84 with 7/14/84 for filler....

Thanks everyone, Blue Cheer was a go to record back in the day when it was first released, I remember first hearing it and asking my trip buddy, "who is this owsley guy" found out he had a hand in making the acid we were doing, coincidence?
Budgie was a band I had never heard of then one nite while we were tripping the light fantastic, a friend put on In for the Kill, wow, then Zoom Club came on and that was it, a fan ever since. Daverock, we must be twin sons from different mothers, your recent listening list is quite formidable and one I can see myself digging right in to, that Pink Floyd mono is off the charts, I have a copy, sounds so good for mono and anything Hendrix is top notch in my book.
Why do chicks always want to leave when things get "weird", don't know, but sometimes its a good thing, I was at a rock concert back in 79' lots of acts, Mahogany Rush, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent , Cheap Trick, some others too and the lady I was with had done too many Quaalude's, she looks at me after several stumbles and falls and says "Take me Home, now". I was tripping pretty hard and said "gladly" got her out of there, took her home and came back and caught the rest of the show, great show with Steven Tyler so high, he fell off the stage, bounced once and got right back up and didn't miss a lyric. When I returned, everyone clapped and applauded her absence. She was a hottie but when she did ludes, she was a pain in the ass and prone to mega-drama.
My seizure story is about the time we were all at a Mcdonald's and in line to get some munchies, we had just received some killer Columbian Red Bud and it was exceptional, we all looked like a bunch of burnouts and then, one of the guys just fell over and started squirming all over the floor, right there in line, trying to do the right thing, we tried to help, but had no idea what to do. He had never had a seizure before and after coming out of it said "man, that's some killer weed". $400.00 a lb, $40.00 oz's, those were the days indeed. (1976 if I remember right)

Talking of 1976, 9/25/76, otherwise known as Dicks Picks 20 (the first half thereof) is a good show for the era. Its the night after the show released as Dave's Picks 4, and much better, to my way of listening.

It might sound perverse, but I am not keen on bonus tracks. Especially when there is no indication on the cover as to which show it comes from. Quite annoying, having an unexpected and unidentified wodge of music thrust at me out of context.

Glad to see a new Dave’s Picks 33 is going to be
sent out soon. With some luck I just might get this one in a reasonable amount of time . Why would one say that considering that the company that sends them out takes great care to see that us ,or me , the customer is treated right and mistakes are kept to a minimum. Folks this is a joke of course
I still haven’t received Dave’s Picks 32 which was released in November. Have I called customer service .....yes......have I called the shipping plant ......yes.......has anything happened......NO......BTW .......Dave’s Picks 31 took over 2 months to get to me .......do I live in some foreign country ......NO.........I live in Brooklyn...........The reason was the package was addressed without my apartment number and returned to them whom say “it takes 6-8 weeks to rectify “ This hasn’t happened once but 2 times in a row ..........what is the definition of insanity..........trying the same the exact same way and expecting different results.......The real insanity is that no one cares at customer service in this company. It’s almost criminal to be treated this way . Over a simple thing as addressing a package correctly. Yes it’s strange but true and I have a subscription. So folks enjoy Dave’s Picks 33 ........I might receive 32 by maybe July and 33 by next Christmas

Long time fan, but first time ordering from this site. How long does it take before these pre-orders actually ship to us, please? Thanks in advance!

Hey Frobodine, love that avatar. Looks like conekid was correct as they have moved the released on date up to January 24, so in theory some will start receiving them on Friday. Last year mine always came at least five days after the release date. Let's hope that changes this year.
Another classic seaside chat. Only 9 minutes, shortest I can remember and yes, was that women skinny dipping? I couldn't tell.
Hidden tracks. That would be awesome. Remember Dick's 13 with that hidden Scarlet Fire from 1979, was that 35 minutes? Dicks 29, hidden tracks from the fall 1977.
That would be sweet!

How about the 4 missing songs from Toronto, Canada 11/2/77 (the first 4 songs from the 2nd Set)? These are:

1. Samson And Delilah
2. Ship Of Fools
3. Good Lovin'
4. Sunrise (this was released with 30 Days Of Dead 2015, but does anyone really care about this song?)

The rest of the show was released in 2 parts as bonus material with DP34 & DaP12. As a completist I can't resist asking for the remainder!

Strange dude, but funny, another one of my heroes gone. RIP Terry.
This release is a good one, had it for years on a bootleg CD that sounds pretty darn good, but these will be from the reel to reel, the actual reel to reel of the show, this is going to sound awesome, can't wait for this one to hear it again, only different, and better.
To all who have been ripped off, Man, I feel for you all and hope that this debacle gets rectified. I do wish that, as another head stated, Dave would address this issue, it is criminal that these fine folks have not received their merchandise. Has any one tried to get the charge taken off their credit card bill? I went this way a couple of times in the past and I did not have to pay for the product and did not have to send it back if it was defective. Don't know if that's possible since they charge up front for all 4 releases, but it's worth a try. I know Discover will go out of their way to make sure that you are happy. Too bad that's not the case with this company. Angry Jack Straw, ticket prices are too high. ;)

Somebody's pissed there's no bonus tracks.

If they were expected to be on there they wouldn't be bonus would they?

Some people will never be happy.

...PM'd you.

In other news, can't wait for this release. Sure, some disc 2 filler would be great, let's see what we get. It will be a fine show regardless.

In other other news, I finally relistened to the Closing of Winterland set (12/31/78), which some of you fine folks were talking about on New Year's Eve. Haven't listened in quite some time. Holy smoke, what a great show. That 3rd disc combo of drums (with a harmonica squawking in the background) into a smoking Not Fade Away is just killer. Sure made my commute to & from work fly by today :-)

I think the eBayers are buying less now that there are so many available. They must be having a more difficult time making a profit now that there are so many to compete with on eBay. There are also a lot of 1977 releases out there. It's not like 1973 where there was a ton of improvisation going on so a lot of the shows sound the same in 77. Just my 2 cents. And I just realized MacArthur Court 78 was released on this day.

Maybe another reason they are not sold out yet because word has been filtering around of all the trouble people had or are having actually getting their orders. I don’t know how widespread the issues are but on IG and on YT (for the recent vid at least) you’ll find people complaining.
Not having piece of mind that orders will be shipped is a big hassle and can easily make some with limited funds not even wanna mess with it.
It’s a shame, really.

Just listening to the listening party -- I have to say that when Keith switched to using the Yamaha electric grand in the Fall of 77, to me anyway, the overall richness of the band sound lost something that an integral part of their sound up to that point. It just doesn't add another dimension to the sound the way a real grand piano did, and keith never sounds as inspired on it.

I'm sure it's a factor. I cannot believe they don't have a customer service function that works.. they need to fix this and the warehouse issue in 2020. These functions might cost money.. but they are not insurmountable and Rhino has other product lines besides the Grateful Dead to service and protect.

How does the story go? Don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg?

The other half is they are and have been dancing around the edge of demand. From 20k to 22k makes a big difference and they have released a lot of shows to this point.. How long has it been since you guys have listened to Dicks Picks #1?

Still, this is a top shelf 1977 show and it will be in high demand. I am surprised it has not sold out yet.

There is just no way that DISC-2 only has 3 songs on it...and one of them is good lovin….and another one is FOTD?!?!?!

There has got to be some filler hidden on that disc, but looking at the time of play for the last song(Friend), it's not like there is a total of 42-43 minutes for that track like say Dick's Picks #13 with the hidden Scarlet>Fire....with all the chatter about not selling out, I've got to guess that DISC-2 is contributing to that. This certainly is far & away the longest any of the Dave picks has remained not sold out for.

Couple things, still amazed Pacific Northwest box is still available, given that a lot of people like that time period. It was 15,000 copies at about $190... I wonder what percentage of subscribers buy the yearly box release? Giants Stadium box was 10,000 copies i believe and around $150.. Get shown the light box, was the last box that put us all in the panic mode of stop everything or I won't get this... Also I know there has been discussion on here that Dead & Company were adding to demand, but is that audience more into streaming instead of looking at the "Album cover"??? The world will never know. be good everyone bob t

I agree RV3 - what a waste.

As most of us know, the show itself is great, but it is such a shame that they would release something with 3 "1st set-type" songs on an entire disc - it's under 25 minutes! Dave's 7 was like that too, but at least that one had a Scarlet>Fire on it. (To this day, that remains one of my least favorite of the series, and that scant disc 2 is totally a factor.) It's not like there is a shortage of material they could use to fill out that time. I wonder if Dave and Co. have decided to hold everything they deem to be releasable back as possible future releases. I have not yet had a chance to watch the seaside chat - does Dave mention anything about this?

Here's hoping there is something hidden there, but I am not going to hold my breath.

Peace
