    Third (fourth) Time's A Charm
This is the third (fourth) time around for this comment (dead.net crashed several time before i was able to save this verion) hopefully, it will go through this time. so...As I was Saying earlier, there is a huge misconception about the term "lossless" as it relates to music. It's not a "format" but a property of copying - either you keep everything (lossless), or you agree to lose some information (lossy). When I send out a wav cd version of music, it's the same as if i sent you the flac version and you converted it to wav yourelf , so the conversation should not be about flac or wav - in thte post cassette world, it doesn't matter. The other thing i wanted to say was that what folks do with the music after it leaves us is up tto them - my job is to initiate - not control what happens later I'm sure there was more i wanted to say, but after having the browsernator crashing three times & trying to re-think what I was trying to say, someone else may have ideas on what i was trying to say or not say. like maybe we need lots of little sailboats vs. a couple of titanics

    New vines
I was going to start the summer 1981 vine (actually there are some more May shows that I can include also) but it looks like there are a lot of new vines be started up right now and I don't want to flood marye with too much at once. So maybe I'll wait a couple of days, unless of course it doesn't matter? Then I am almost ready to start a Fall 1981 Vine. So I will have a "More May and Summer 1981 Vine" coming really soon and a "Fall 1981 Vine" right on its heels! All in all it will be a pretty good representation of 1981 - One of the best years ever in my opinion! "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Not dead...just grateful :) thanks for turning me onto LOSSLESS Dstache...it's changed my life. :) "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. and by future vines, I mean vines that you are working on posting for later, not vines that are ready to go. For vines that are ready to go and you want people to start signing up, post over at the New Vines section. I believe Marye's intent is for only "new vines" to be posted there, and for all discussions to occur here.

This is the thread we should use to make it easier on Marye, so that when she goes to the new vines thread she doesn't have to wade through a bunch of posts to find the new vines to be posted. People are still posting comments over there, but not to the same extent, and hopefully soon everyone will know to come here to talk about vining, future vines, etc. Good to have you back, Lopezz!

    A technical request
I have had trouble reading the DVDs in a couple of the recent vines, in particular the SHN/FLAC 1973 and SHN/FLAC 1970 series. After doing some research, I have learned that my DVD drive cannot read DVDs that are burned in UDF format. There are competing DVD formats and the Mac OS has stayed with the old format (ISO, also known as ISO-9660) rather than fully adopting the newer standard (UDF), which Microsoft is behind (shock, amazement!). So DVDs burned in UDF format look blank to the DVD drive on my Mac but can be read by the DVD drive in my laptop from work, which is (of course) a PC. To get around the problem I've been using my work laptop to transfer the FLAC/SHN files to a USB drive, which my Mac can then read. The only alternative is to buy a $50 piece of software that enables the Mac DVD drive to read UDF format, and I am obviously trying to avoid that option. Okay, enough gobbledygook, here's the quick and easy solution, for those willing to accommodate me (and probably, any other Mac users in the Vineyard): when you burn the DVDs, use ISO format instead of UDF format. Everybody's DVD drives can read the ISO format, so it won't cause problems for either the Mac or PC users. From what I've read, the settings on DVD-burning software for the PC are easy to change to ISO format just before a burn. Many thanks, and now back to regular programming . . . ~~~~~~~ "They say Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice"

I have been away for a couple of months dealing with a very unexpected death in our family. Being the oldest of 3 I had to handle the details of which there were many in a very unorganized fashion. The storm has finally passed thank (insert whoever you belive in here). I believe it is safe to resume vining. I apologize for not posting here sooner, but I'm sure everyone here will understand the situation. It looks as if there are some really cool vines in the mix. I think I have two vines, that I will find out who is next in line and send off asap!! I apologize for the delays and will repair my surely tarnished vining reputation stat!! Kevin

Thanks for the support guys. I have sent off one vine (New 90's Pt 1) and I cannot locate the other that I was supposed to have (Capital Center '91) I posted to the vine offering blanks if someone would re-seed. That should have me up to date. If anyone knows of vines that I was the death of let me know and I will try to help. Again thanks to eveyone in this community for your understanding of life's ups and downs and for all you do for the vineyard. Especially those who have vined with me for years now and always have the back of a brother, as I wil always have yours when you need it.Kevin

There is a chance that I may be moving by April. If I do or not I will let you know. Hopefully I can still vine but if life gets in the way the vineyard would have to be put on hold for me. If this is the case I will mail any remaining vines that haven`t been signed up on to JSFC to hold onto.-Jake

Without sounding too hyperbolic, last night's Furthur show (3/27) at Radio City was far and away the best post-Jerry show of any type I have seen. If you get the chnce, check out the setlist and even more check out the guests, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, etc, etc. "Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own."

I think it was last played by the GD in 1969. They did one on 4/26/69 in Chicago. Of course Furthur did it at FurthurFest last year. I agree that they are firing on all cylinders so far in 2011!! "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

I have been investigating different ways to store files on line, that would be accessible by more than one person. I have put some shows on a skydrive. The files are downloadable, no passwords are needed. If any of you want to try it out, feel free and PM me to let me know how it worked. (or didn't work) Here is the address: http://cid-0908c9749ff4b1b3.skydrive.live.com/home.aspx?sa=795624458

I will be vining the 1969 Lossless Project composed of 5 parts by the end of the month. I will being posting multiple parts at once. I ask that once these get the go ahead, no one has more than one vine at a time, please. So if you sign up first on more than one, I will be sending it to the person after you. Don't take it as disrespect I just wanna keep this music moving. That being said, enjoy this healthy dose of Pigpen and 1969.

So, Jake, are you including the shows that were vined as Early 69 (which included most of Jan-Apr) in the 1969 Lossless Project? I don't know if there are 5 parts if you don't include those shows. I am very interested in all the shows not included in the Early 69 parts. Thanks!

Glad to see everyones excited about these vines. Ive been wanting some shows from this great yr in lossless for some time now as the majority that have been vined here were on cd that I signed up on forever ago it seems. Listening to the Lovelight from an old Woodstock Bootleg many years ago got me to be a Pigpen fan. Thanks to Rick for sendin me the shows and I hope you all enjoy these as much as I do. You can never have too many Dark Stars, The Other Ones, or Lovelights IMO. Long live the vineyard and happy vining to all.

I have been able keep things mostly organized since being part of this community. I am at a total loss. I got some Feb-Mar 2011 Further stuff in the mail, and I have been up and down the threads, and I don't see a 2011 Further vine. I am sure it's right in front of my face. Is there a 2011 Further Vine?

Well it appears I need a new burner. I wont be able to get one for a lil bit so I`ve sent all my original 1969 DVDs from Rick to kwitt so he can burn and turn instead of me risking more DVD issues. Everyone should be getting replacement discs and Parts 4 and 5 should be sent soon.I apologize for the hangup but I promise its worth the wait.
