    Glad y’all dug 9/26/81! ...glad we’ve been digging the 81/91 pre 71 cleanse.
    I sorta remember something about BJ and the Europe 81 tapes, but was it the spring, or the longer and more well known fall Europe tour? Hmmm, have to research that one since slacker GOGD isn’t here to do it for us LOL.

    This was my sixth show, (over span of almost 3 years, later I’d routinely tag that many in one tour lol)
    It was perhaps the only time I attended a show that was part of a social gathering (I can even remember most of the bars we went to after), and the first time not in prime seating location.
    Though we had decent seats: right side, up and back probably half way: I’d been fortunate to see 2 Front row, 2 third row, and ? probably 10-15 rows back on the floor for 11/9/79, so this was a big difference and sorta distraction, not that I would be able to understand that then. I just knew it sucked not being close up!
    Yep, Jim, Klondike Keek, and I, better know then collectively as the Booze Brothers, with Milton Wikelberry Steamer III, Tammy M, aka Buzz Kitten, and a couple of the Gates brothers that hung with Milty...perhaps more?
    So I remember On the Road Again (my only one) as Reckoning was new and in heavy rotation, and I know I loved it, but back then our knowledge of all things Dead wasn’t like now with Net and deadbase etc. so it was just sorta another Dead show. Over the years I had kinda forgot about it, and when I finally did hear it back a couple years, it was only a superficial treatment. I think late at night at a party on a shitty smart speaker?
    But my cousin kept telling me how Dave and Blitz kept playing it or parts here and there and seemed hot on it, so I’ve been wanting to catch up with it, and have been planing on it for a while. So of course the day comes, and I was hoping to get a nice mellow Sunday morning listen with some coffee, and when the weed is just right and hasn’t taken over the conversation for the day yet,...but, well, shit happens lol.
    So long story short it’s gettin on late afternoon, so ended up watching football before, which long story, was a bad tactical error lol, so when I did hear it I was sorta wrecked, definitely burnt after afternoon beer buzz etc, so needless to say THAT run through wasn’t productive lol.
    But got up today and have been quite digging on it this beautiful AM!
    So come on Dave, bring it! Ha!

    BLUCROW: still laughing/smiling over that Weirwolf story and the vendor...Think many of us have had a similar experience! Great stuff eh! Sounds like we were at many of the same front range shows back 96-05! Good Times fo sho!

    JIM: I’m confused? You mentioned Dave speaking on XM? about 9/25/91, and Earl of Bud etc,?
    Earl of Bud, Earl Patterson Howze Jr, was a fan favorite and staple at many Buffalo events for decades. He was a Beerman but wore this white tux and did the pee-wee big shoe dance during breaks in the game etc. he became quite a local celebrity over the years...id lynx if I could, ahem...
    So if 9/25/91 was in Boston, which is a rink with a despicable lol, but pretty good hockey team ; ) but Earl was in Bu fa falo, I’m confused? Perhaps Dave was discussing 9/26/81, again...?, which gives me hope! Lol, see, it’s always about getting shows released!

    Yes, bring us some more 81!
    Took a crack at this show yesterday. What a show to be at Oroborous. The first set recording that is available needs some work, but yes I agree the second set Healy that is available sounds much better. You would have to think he has quite a few recordings of his own that will continue to drip out.

    Ha.. serendipitous. They played the post space part of 9/25 on TIGD History yesterday on SiriusXM. Dave got into quite the tangent on the venue, hockey and the guy called The Earl of Bud that got rowdy at hockey games and danced to the Tequila song whenever they had faceoffs...

    I was up early and gone all day driving into some of the more remote areas in Southern WV for some river fun.. what a beautiful state, had a blast.. so I had a lot of time in the truck to listen to music and out the door at 7am brought me to the later half of the second set. ..but it only had the Playing Reprise.

    I was in the truck 12 hours later and got a relisten, so I hit the full second set when I got back. Sweet second set, plus there's a pretty good Miller update that came out somewhat recently. Double Sweet.

    I guess I will have to hit the first set today. Great pick guys.. nice early show Oro (I think that came somewhat early in your show seeing days??).

    Onward.. have a great week all. Fall has arrived here in the mid atlantic.

    Oro - a great pick made even better that you were there. A sweet listen end to end. It was that very rare Sunday morning when I'm up in the work space and it was a perfect show to stream. Must say, like about every drummers birthday riff, Bob is totally making it up as to Chuck Berry's birthday. I'd love to ask him about that made-up birthday thing he's got - he was trotting it out all the freaking time.

    Gotta hope that the first set is in the vault in well-recorded entirety . Great songs, excellent and spirited playing. full throttle Shakedown > CC Rider to start. Oh my goodness. V Guy has his Cumberland thing. My "thing" is a slightly more expansive. Not just Cumberland, but Brown-Eyed Women, Peggy-O, and Jack-a-Roe(!!). Big Railroad. Me and Bobby McGee. This show has both Brown-Eyed and Jack-a-Roe, plus (added bonus) On the Road Again. Before 8/7/82 my youngest brother (#1 son counting backwards) said he wanted to hear On the Road Again. I said no way they're playing that. You bet, they played it.

    That pre-drumz second set has got to be unique. The transitions from Bertha > Estimated and Estimated > Going Down The Road are pretty B/W, as is GDTR > drums, all very cool in the energy shift. Love the tone on circa '81 Not Fades (just wish they'd jammed it out a bit more.) Bobby has a tiny misstep trying to bring back the NFA chorus. But Jerry is all focused on Morning Dew, not that it's immediately evident, but no big deal Bob.

    Given an earlier comment I made, the portion of the show available from Healy's cassette master sounds pretty damn good.

    Dave L. - release the hounds, I mean, release this show ;)

    9/26/81 - all in!!

    glancing at set list night before that and there's something I've never seen - a Sugar Mag / Sunshine Daydream sandwich post drums. '80 and '81 are filled with great shows and it would have helped if Betty had been at the helm recording a whole bunch of them on reels (cue picky deadhead comment).

    DeadVikes - trust me the Midwest is still the land of my childhood heart. I know you're back there but was thinking you were somewhere a bit north of Chi-Town?

    Hey Oroborous, 9/26/81 sounds great to me. A little Buffalo NY and your first show.
    Had a chance to listen to the 3/20/81 London show. Wish there was a better sounding recording available. I seem to remember Blair Jackson talking about how great these shows were and what a bummer it was that there was not better recordings available.

    Hey Bluecrow, you got to see Dead and Co. Sounds like fun man. I need to check out your 80 recommendation. Oh and remember some of us live in the Midwest.

    3/21/81✔️ More of the same, in a good way, just nothing extraordinary, that stands out during these shows so far?
    9/26/91✔️ This one goes both ways...it has some of the consistency of the tour, but this night, has somewhat out of the ordinary stand outs. Big shhhhooooeee, (think Ed Sullivan) on paper at least.
    I feel the same about some of these versions, as perhaps other post re-entry versions: there not the best performances of the songs you’ve ever heard, but so what, overall, there enjoyable, invoke the spirit of the music, have good jams, space, etc, and when tied all together in a nice container like this show, said container should be pasteurized and served cold to a thirsty public!
    Not unlike other official releases, this wouldn’t perhaps be the most polished show from the neighborhood, but to me, the bigness makes up for it. What can I say, I’m a Dark Star junkie and sucker for any attempt to tapback into the timeless reflection of matter...and hey, it’s got a Cumberland!

    BC: 80 shows noted for future mining...but first, perhaps one last indulgence:

    Besides being my 40th anniversary of this show, it’s shown up over the years on tapers section and GD channel etc, and I believe Dave has specifically mentioned it before, so since we’ve been enjoying some 81 lately I’d hoped y’all indulge an old freak uno mass?

    September 91 just keeps on giving.

    For those who do torrents I noticed (and then acquired) that several remastered September 91’s had been posted recently.
    I haven’t checked them out yet to see what improvements had been made, but I did notice a few days ago that my copy of 9/22 has a several second long gap of silence between Drums and Space. I was going to edit that out but maybe I won’t have to if a remastered version is available.

    speaking of weather shows - this is a pretty good one from back in the early Brent years
    8-16-1980 Mississippi River Festival, Edwardsville, Illinois
    I think i remember reading one of those random reviews in Deadbase. managed to miss the Uptown run a few days later but caught Alpine right after that. Second set 1st night at Uptown is insanely good.

    Yep Oro - I was in the neighborhood! Needed a 2 hour mind and body recharge and hoping I wouldn't get rousted. Saw a few snowflakes at Loveland and Vail. The live fix was a big deal after the last couple years. brother(s) - "as your attorney I recommend you see a show." more below.

    Jim - The Weirwolf - yeah I think its pretty f*ckin funny. I didn't see any Shakedown near Wrigley. Remarkably little vending. after that magnificent second night curving back around front of the stadium on way "home" and there's a lone(ly) Head holding up a sticker that reads - God Bless the Weirwolf. I think "that's pretty good!" and also notice that no one really seems to see him. It was odd - he's holding these stickers just above his forehead, silent, and its like he's invisible as the crowd flows around him. I wasn't really in acquisition mode and got about a hundred ft past before I turned to my brother and said I gotta go back and get that (1 for $3, 2 for $5 - picked up 2). The seller sincere - "Thanks Brother" as Bobby the Weirwolf was blessed and reaffirmed. A small momento of those nights which I'll remember forever. Bobby looks wild nowadays. His singing on Days Between was like a possessed Spirit. Archetypal. A freaking Weirwolf for sure howling out visions and prophecies.

    Rain first night was one of those added dimensions that doesn't phase me nowadays. Of course tickets were covered, high in the Upper Deck just past 3rd base so we weren't getting cleared off the field (not once but twice.) But yes, I can dig some weather. By end of delayed and abbreviated first set we were hanging in upper aisle with room to dance and just checking out the parade of China Cats - so cool to see all these happy people. D&Co with Weirwolf singing opened second set with a very slow groove, funky Dancing in the Streets, nothing like any version I've heard elsewhere. Really really dug it. "Dancing in Chicago" Segued into a nice always welcome Playing, then Scarlet. Mickey on the BEAM was awesome - the whole stadium in rumble-vibrate cobalt-light phase. I love that shit. Special shout out to NY Tim and crew from that 1st night. God it was fun.

    althea > uncle john's > he's gone to open second night. really? yes! and that second set night 2 had a fine fine groove all through. sweet sweet sound and all jammed out. Milestones was crazy - i was dancing so hard to that. It seemed like something was afoot between Chimenti and Mayer during space before they got to THAT. and the H>S>F to close was out of this world - all of it - wild how "Roll Away . . . " carried through the stadium.

    So yeah Oro - getting to experience all of that live was very cool and very necessary .

    I saw a few post-Jerry shows from '96 - '05, all in the Front Range, a fair number at Red Rocks that most awesome of venues. Totally forgot until this evening that the first was a Merle Saunders show in a tiny club in Colorado Springs. Awesome time - my first Dark Star! But it was a Further event at Fiddler's Green in '97(?), including sets by Mystery Box and Rusted Root, that really brought me around to the fact that Jerry was and is still with us. With all those shows it wasn't simply "nostalgia" - there was always new music being played. The first P&F show at Red Rocks July 2001 (7/6) "floored" me (check out the set list for that show and second night). When they dropped into Blues for Allah I looked at my friend with one of those wide-eyed big smile yhgtbfkm looks of pure joy. dream and myth. Really dug what Warren Haynes brought always. And Jimmy Herring. John Molo. Ryan Adams in the guest slot with Phil 2002(?). Mayer and Oteil and Chimenti. Every one of the music makers.

    So yeah - my thought is someday maybe "we" can all enjoy a few beers together. Even a show or 2.

    Which reminds me - where in the heck is GOGD?

....got the Galaxy S20+ at the beginning of March. My old phone was circa 2014. Was time for an upgrade. Came with an early order credit of $150. Used that towards Buds+'s. Testing them now during 2.23/24.68 Tahoe. Not bad.
Then I heard about all the 5G shit. Can't win for losing i guess.

RT 3.1. Fun to revisit this one - been a long long time. Totally forgot that it had that awesome Terrapin > Playing. BITD I had a cassette from a friend who labeled it "Terrapin > Playing > Jam > Yikes!!" At one point it seems like Brent was channeling his inner Ned Lagin (fully approve!)

Looking forward to visiting Santa Fe later today. Never given that legendary show a deep listen. Anybody got rec as to what source? Notice that there's an Usborne matrix.

Pick of the day reminds me of a college literature class - 4 days in and it feels like already a week behind. Tahoe is gonna have to wait.

Wichita - real bounce in their step whole show. I think '72 is my favorite "era" for Other One. Some really great Keith piano in there. Always sweet when they drop from one of these into some slow heartfelt beauty like Brokedown. When are we gonna get 9-28-72?

Stoked, unfortunately have to make a death run first; ACE for varnish, and PO. Don’t ya know almost finished with more book shelves for Lovey and I’m out of Varnish, Doooaahh! At least it’s pre-order curb side. PO I’m afraid I might have to go in and stand in line for a package (clothes for her, to go to a wedding, that we already dropped non refundable mucho dineros, that were probably not going to be able to attend).....
But I’ll be firing that up this afternoon once I have the goods....going to try the Siemens matrix. Never been as enamored with SB recordings as most. I feel there is nothing like a good matrix, more natural sounding....

Opens with Music Never Stopped. Bobby botches half the lyrics, but, as usual, the boyz make up for it with a smoking end jam.

I really, really dig these two shows.

....to end the first. Storm clouds were rolling in and rumor has it, this show had one of the longest set breaks of all time. Waiting for the weather. Pics show that they didn't have a covering over the stage, just the rigging (see my avatar). The China Rider segue is bopping!! Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.

Music, holy crap, energy of a set 2 opener; TLEO, nice pace mellow and jammy; Esau, it's nice; Big RR and BIODTL fast songs didn't work here(maybe a Bird Song or Row J.); Tenn Jed back on track; Minglewood, smoking; China>Rider rockin' nice transition, wish I was a headlight...

Woman R, nice energy; Cumberland, foot stomping, Phil bombs; Playin, really nice jam; China Doll, beautiful; Jam Drums, Space really great; TOO, trembled and exploded; GDTRFB, OMSN, rockin'; CR&S the only time they encored with CR&S.

Had some family issues to deal with the last couple days, so I'm behind a bit. Halfway through RT 3.1, hope to get through the rest of that one and Santa Fe by tomorrow morning. Kinda fun listening to shows that haven't been in the rotation for a few years. SO much good stuff - we are blessed indeed!

....the only ballad in the second set was China Doll. Albeit played at 1.5× speed, the outro jam is delicious. More Lost Sailor teases from Bobby during space with a dash of Heaven Help The Fool.
At the 9:10 mark they finally decide on The Other One. 9:10 mark. I still don't believe in coincidences. Cool Space.

One of the high points of my life. Turbo Tom drove down from Kiowa, Montana , picked me up where I was living north of Taos and we made our way to the Santa Fe Downs. We camped next to the parking area where the Hog Farm was helping out. The Sikhs were security (Akal Security) for the Downs. Both days were amazing. And it was harvest season. The two shows were far from sold out. Many of the old guard long hairs from northern New Mexico were in attendance. Just thinking about those two concerts is like a memory from the Golden Eternity.
I’m most of the way through the first set. Earbuds , iPhone and cell tower signal up in the mountains to access this.
Great call V-guy 72!

....they played three shows there. These two, plus a one off in '82. On off as in no tour. 13 song first set if I recall correctly. Just decided to pop into Santa Fe. Plangent it and box it and ship it.
I'll pay $99.99 US dollars.
Alaska would work too. I'll pony up three moose pelts.

When I moved down from Montana in January 1982 I lived ten miles north of Taos on north Hondo Mesa in the “kiva” in the Grow-hole. (Built by the alternative school the Taos Learning Center TLC in the early 70s) Lived in a tipi and then the “Pyramid Cube” on El Salto Mountain for the next five years. Spring of 1987 I moved to Grant County and worked trails in the Gila. Also have worked many years up in Gallup. (Trail work and Public Radio)
Another side bar on the Santa Fe Dead shows. The state penitentiary is just a couple miles from the Santa Fe Downs. Bobby Petersen (Unbroken Chain, Pride of Cucamonga) arranged with the authorities at the prison to transmit a low wattage FM signal live broadcast direct from the Downs. Bobby used to live on Lama Mountain up in Taos County not to mention Robert Hunter spent time living on Canyon Road in Santa Fe in the 60s and visited Taos at different times. And contrary to rumors , the Dead did not play at New Buffalo Commune in the 60s. I asked one of the founders last summer , Rick Klein who helped start Buffalo in 67 that very question. Not the Dead but the Eagles played at New Buffalo. Also Laird Grant (Jerry’s longest time friend) used to live at Morning Star above Arroyo Hondo.
The skies are the most consistently clear of pollution day after day for the past three weeks than for the better part of the past 40 plus years. And I’m talking the mountain west.

....northern NM does have energy. The Taos hum proves that. Gallup was always a pit stop for me.

Did you catch the Shakedown Stream?
Pretty cool. Dave, can't sit still. He mentioned 50-70 or so high quality video in the Vault from 89-95. Intriguing to me, not sure if they will put any more of it out, but I would love to see it. Man, how about putting out the Spring 90 Tour on video? I would volunteer to help out on that project.

Been working in the garage last few days and the energy from both DP 22 and 9/10/83 has made things fly by!
Gave Santa Fe another listen last night because I was diggin it and wanted to give it a better listen than the first time. Great 83 show, fun, spirited show with interesting sets. Might just give the next night a spin today while I work.
Guessing perhaps partially why that China-rider is in overdrive might be due to the deluge that was obviously happening as Bob says something like “we’ll be back when it stops raining”. I might contribute the pace solely to “other” things except it’s not like all the songs were that fast and it wasn’t right after break? So to go from normal 83 tempo to warp drive just then, and since they didn’t have full canopy etc, makes me think they were trying hard to get the fug outta there lol.

I like 9/10 a little better both are great. There are two grate audience recordings of these shows in hi-rez maybe a matrix box.

China Cat Sunflower / I Know You Rider had me dancing in the dark last night. Gonna listen to the second set today. You know, land of manana , New Mexico stylie. Damn this is a long set break!

May I make a suggestion inspired by Bolo's idea? I think a "Pick Of The Week" is more workable. I think one person should make the selection and at the same time designate the next picker. So on Monday let's say JiminMd makes a pick and names the next picker who will announce his pick the following Monday and the next picker etc etc. Hey I know I'm in social isolation at least through May and I think Bolo's idea is great but it needs some structure. I also know I've been drinking and I have no idea if anything I've said makes any sense. Also I just finished 4/11/72 and I think it's probably the weakest show of the tour.

That appeals to me a bit more. I am still following my own unplanned trail through shows, so the pick of the day was on top of what I was already listening to. The result was I got left behind straight away and decided to drop out. A weekly pick would obviously give us more time, and wouldn't intrude on where we feel we are supposed to go.

I listened to 12-28-79 a day late and haven’t done the others so far.
Looks like I have 9-10,11-83 on a HD but they haven’t migrated to my music player yet. Might do that later today, but first yard work calls.

For my easy-listening, coffee-drinking routine to get today going I went with 10-10-80 Acoustic.
But that just finished.

So onward with 1-24,25,26-69 % which is compiled from the AOXOMOXOA-50th bonus disc, AOXOMOXOA-Golden Road Box filler, and a portion of Live Dead. Such things are possible with my collection because I organize by show date, not by the arbitrary order that shows are released.

I think we only had 3-4 picks last week. Now that we are through the Holiday, maybe we could get back at it. Seems like every other day is doable for most. Either way we need a new pick from someone. I already had one last week. Would like us to stick to official releases. Just my thoughts.

I've always preferred this part of the pick to the 11/30 portion (which isn't to say the first part is any slouch!) I think a part of it is that "Morning Dew" always seems to work better as a closer than an opener, at least for me. The second disc of this portion (or disc 4 of the set,) is just exactly perfect!

I had to take a break for some work related conference calls just as Weather Report was moving into Let it Grow, but I picked back up and am now into "Nobody's Fault" jam territory. This was a great release of a great show! As I mentioned, I prefer this one to 11/30, but I think I will have to def. go back and hit some of those highlights (maybe all of disc 2,) after this.

That being said, it is really hard to beat this second set, that though very short, contains some FAR OUT there stuff... Wharf Rat, Playin, He's Gone, Truckin, Stella, Dew - all heavyweights in my all-time favorite GD tunes list.

Good choice, IceCream!

It's got a "Sugaree", a "China>Rider", and a "Playin'>UJB>Playin'" - and so far, this Matrix sounds pretty darn good. I've never listened to this show, so it's a treat :)

I suppose this is for those students that not only want extra-credit, but are looking to write a master's thesis, or simply polish them apples into a 110%.
