I loved the exchange in the bar between the guy who was pissed about being exploited and inconvenienced for the movie and the guy who was sure that in years to come we'd all be watching it. And the guy who interrupted it all with "ST. STEPHEN!" It gave me some perspective on how annoyed I was with a NYE show with a Pepto-Bismol pink cake and the whole venue lit up brilliant white for TV. Hey, you can still watch the tape and I can still reflect on how I was grinding my teeth. Life is full of tradeoffs!

and I've got to say, a treat to see it in such fine condition and on such a fine sound system because the previous times I've seen it in theaters over the years it's tended to be in more fleabag, er, art house, venues. Yeah, it sure is a different perspective on this in 2011 than it was in 1981 when I first saw it as a new Head. But I really appreciate all over again the job Jerry et al did getting it down so well. Nothing could possibly get the band, the crew, the family, the Heads, the culture, and everything in one movie, but this is a darn respectable snapshot and hey, the music and visuals ain't bad either!

Saw it on Long Island last night. Theater was jammed!Brought back lots of memories, but what stood out most was how cool we Deadheads were in the 70s and just how talented, intelligent, talented, funny, talented, sweet, and talented Mr. Garcia was in his prime! I tend to forget that now that he has been gone so long. But seeing him on the big screen again brought back a rush of memories. Many of us in the theateer were practically crying during Morning Dew. Man, do I miss Jerry. "Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own."

Just got back from seeing the movie in Indianapolis area - not a huge crowd. I saw it when in first came out so it was hard not to be introspective. I remember thinking it was just okay when I first saw it - but I was also getting to see live shows. I really enjoyed it this time - but it was a bit sad as well. Since they added new interviews I wish at the end there would have been a tribute to those who we lost - and perhaps some footage from today. I'm glad I went - when I was sitting in a dorm room as an 18 year old freshman at Kansas I remember asking a friend if he thought we would be listening to the GD when we were 40 ---I'm 55.

My wife, daughter and I will be the only 3 in the theatre. Although maybe the college kids will show up.. I'm just shocked they are even showing the movie there. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

I remember, I think, that this film was re released to theatres back a few years ago, (late 90's, early 2000's?) man, where has my memory gone, I'm sure it was, or was it a dream? or a flashback? I remember the little rocking chair theatre that we went to, I remember all the "new heads" there to see it for the first time, I remember running out of the theatre after it was over with the movie poster in my hand, given to me by a friend that worked there, it still hangs on the wall over there, I'm sure it wasn't a dream. Does anybody else remember the last re-release of this grate film?4-20-11, I'll be at the theatre, this time I will remember not to forget.

I'm thinking of taking my straight-laced GF, who I think has never been high in her life. Maybe I can do something about that. Maybe my kids will go, 2 outta 3 of them have taken me to see Dark Star Orchestra a few times so they may be up for a real look at what their old man got to enjoy up close & personal, once upon a time... Peace, Steve

I'll see it in Napa. I was at the 2 finals shows - October 19 and 20th. When my buddy and I came out of the Sat. show we got right back in line! When the doors opened in the late afternoon - we sprinted to the stage. We were in the front row for both nights - right in front of Jerry. What a special time! I got on the bus in 73 after seeing the Dead at Stanford. Later that year we saw Old and in the Way in October at the Boarding House. We also saw Kingfish and Garcia/Saunders in 73 and 74.

I totally agree with you! Although I'd say we were beyond practically to actually crying during Morning Dew! Wow was that sweet or what? And to think, if I had hippy dead head parents, I could have been one of those little guys dancing on the stage! It was really cool to see the wall of sound too, again all I could say was "wow"! Weir's interview really explained the man's personality. We picked what I knew would be a "dead" theatre - 9 of us total, it was kind of nice! I estimate 150 people showed up where I was at. Some applause after certain songs, which felt weird to me except after Morning Dew (pretty incredible, I agree). A few folks decided to dance in the wings. Seems like people took the opportunity to take a break during the jam sections of Playing and Eyes. marye mentions the guy near the bar, which is during Eyes of the World... I swear that guy looks just like wife's dad would have in 74. He probably wasn't in SF though. Anybody know the Playing in the Band that went with the pre-show slides? Had to be 72 or 72 since it was self-contained. What about that outdoor show in all the pictures?

I watched the movie with friends Barry & Chris: The AMC theater in Leawood had maybe 40 people. Ten minutes into the show, we noticed there was no sound (WTF?). Rewind....start over. Sound happened! I was amused by 2 encore songs leading off, really enjoying the "One More Saturday Night" from 10/19/74. Stella Blue from 10/17/74 was terrific, as was the abbreviated Eyes from 10/19/74. I'll agree that Morning Dew, from 10/18/74, was riveting, between Jerry's vocals and Phil's bass bombs. Did yall notice that Mickey slipped in his drum set for Johnny B. Goode on 10/20/74?

My ticket stub says I saw "The Grateful Dead" at 7:30 PM in the MTN VW Century 16. The theater was number 9. There were a good 50 or more people in the room. The sound was, unfortunately, not properly balanced. No left front speaker. Audio exclusive to the left channel was audible only through the surround system's rear speakers, slightly delayed. That's Jerry's channel, and his guitar was coming from the rear/side speakers. But of course, you could hear Keith's piano really clearly...M.A. Akatiff -- Palo Alto, Ca. Nobody took tickets or checked print out at the door. The still photographs from Europe and Reno were interesting. Interviews great. The sound cut out during Morning Dew jam. Had to get manager to rewind. About 30 people in theater. It showed at two other theaters in Tucson. Was at four out of five nights at Winterland. I missed the first night hitch-hiking down from Oregon. First time seeing the movie on the big screen. I'm in the movie during "Playin reprise", several shots of me dancing.Oh that tall skinny 20 kid from God knows where.

i would say about maybe 50 people showed the sound was good but they didn't have all the theater speakers going just the one's up front. I brought my new recorder ( starting to get into taping ) recorded morning dew. I always think how funny it is that the crowd looks the same no matter what year it is.

Hit the movie up for the final night encore yesterday with my buddy. Spent the day after school listening to the Dead and recent Furthur shows then booked down to the theater. Great time and nice theater.....awesome to see it on a big screen. Surprisingly only about 5 people showed, which we were a little bummed because we were hoping for a bigger crowd. I have the movie on DVD and although they didn't show it, the bonus disc is oh so fine!

The Grateful Dead Movie actually has been released on DVD. The only problem is the fact that it's overpriced since it's been out of print. I managed to buy a copy off Ebay. There is a second DVD that features material not shown in theaters, which is superb!

Hi all The page for the Blu-Ray of this REALLY needs to state that it is a Region-locked Blu-Ray. I bought it on the assumption that it's region-free, like other Dead releases, and I can't watch it because it's a US region Blu-Ray. It's pretty rough that this wasn't advertised (although I'm happy to be corrected if it was advertised as such).

The February GD Bulletin emailing advertised Shout Factory's release of the 14-DVD All the Years Combine movies-&-video compilation, so I followed that link, and decided to order that bundled with the GD Movie Blu-ray (which comes with bonus DVD that I thought wasn't in the All the Years set, though it is). Anyway, the Blu-ray package's booklet (exclusive to that, not with the 14-DVDs set) has an excellently structured concise essay by Dennis McNally on the Movie's creation; best short-form writing accompanying a Gr Dead release that I've read in ages.

Well, I guess that essay and the booklet were also in the 2004 DVD release of the GD Movie and bonus disc, yes? (and not exclusive to the new Blu-ray package); new to me, though.

It is not written anywhere on the packaging or discs (that I can find) what region it is, but I imagine it is region 1. By the way Shout Factory will not ship to Europe, but this set is available at a great price from Canada through amazon.ca for just Canadian$ 65.99 way cheaper than shout or amazon usa and a low shipping cost too. you can usually unock the regions on a DVD player. Just google hack and your player model.

Thanks for the tip, cosmicbadger! I just ordered the boxset from amazon.ca - as you say, it's a great price. Shame I'll have to wait a few weeks for it to arrive, but that's no problem. I was thinking of trying to hack my dvd player as you suggest, so I'll do that.
