Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

Thanks, my man! I think it sounds pretty sweet - especially that Shrine 67 LP release, played LOUD!

Your Hershey story is great! Really wish I would have been around during those times! I would have partied right down in the mud with you!

Not the same, but my first Phish show was at Hershey in 96. We too found a spot directly in front of the soundboard, figuring that it had to sound good there. To this day, my friends and I refer to that area at shows as "The Chocolate Spot."

DeadVikes, everything's a-ok on this end. Thanks for the thoughts!

Good to see you back in the loop. Hope all is well. New system is always exciting.
I am willing to give Dave's 31 another try. Haven't listened to it since last year.

Took out Good old Dave's 25, the BINGHAMTON NY 77 show. Some of these shows keep getting better with each listen.
Oroborous, you are a wild man. What a ride!

Be well folks. I have heard rumblings in other pages about big announcements coming. Don't know about that but we do know Dave's 35 will be announced in July. Maybe they will give Oroborous an 85 pick?

....another one of my first tapes. Bird Song-> Comes A Time -> Deal. A rare Garcia trifecta to end the first. Music Never Stopped-> Tom Thumbs to open the second. How do you guys keep bringing up my first loves? And why does this band keep following me?
Here's kind of a story. I tripped balls listening to this tape in 1989. That's all I got.

So after basically staying up for 2 days at SPAC, we finally pack it up and hit the road the next day. I believe it was a rainy, gloomy day most of the day. But that didn’t stop our idiot patrol from basically racIng at high speed through the fine but conservative state of Pennsytuckey, where they were one of the last to let go of the 55 mph laws, and back then there usually wasn’t much tolerance. So 2 cars of totally raging nutknicks, with probably enough cargo to keep us detained for decades, thought it’d be a good idea to race at speeds up to 90!, Idiots!.....yes, one car had a radar detector, but in those days smart cops would wait for some nut traveling high speed and click it on when they had ya dead nuts.
Luckily, all was well and it was one more “miracle” as we earnestly pursued our quest for “too much of everything is just enough”, aaaa, never considered back then maybe Bob was being sarcastic? Lol
So we roll on into Chocolate town late and all beat up. I’m guessing we grabbed some kind of drive through, but not sure and as we were hardcore vegetarian then, perhaps we thought we’d grab something there? It’s all such a blur, I do recall the lot we were in had no or little Shakedown action going on. That still wasn’t in full flight anyway, and don’t recall much there, so maybe we drank our supper? I know I scored some Carlsberg Elephant beer, and believe I may have finished it, though that is a tall order even under good conditions so perhaps not. I’m sure I put in dent in it at least! So, that and the last of one z of veggies, though the tricky part was it was mostly just powder and scraps and so no normal produce to properly gage etc, which would turn out to be a tactical error...
So it’s late, we’re tired, but tweaked, perhaps no dinner, and of course it’s horrible out. Dark, rainy, and cold is usually not how you want to do your Dead. Eventually we get in perfect time, slip right in front of the SB and try to make the best of the situation. Well I had a shirt, a black baseball jacket, and the electric Buffalo Hyde, but even still it was damp and cold at first. Eventually, when things started to take hold and we started boogieing, we began to warm up a bit.
Meanwhile, the set list is awesome, but the conditions, which necessitated all the stage and PA speakers being covered in plastic (there was no stage lid) thereby severely effecting the audio. It’s was such a weird show that way, loved the little “stadium” and the nice audiophile stereo set up, with surrounds, great set list, mostly good playing, yes JGs vocals are a little ruff in the first set, but you have to cut some slack as it was terrible, I mean depending on the wind/rain they were getting rained on playing electrical instruments! Weird indeed, but like so many times in adverse conditions our heroes seemed to rise to the challenge. Thus the playing was perhaps more relaxed, steady and together and not forced like the previous night. Really, besides JGs vocal issues in the first, its a top notch show!
The second set really starts to take it higher with stellar versions of Music Never Stopped, Terrapin, Miracle and one of the best Dews I’ve ever seen! I think I saw about 14 or 15 Dews and when I think about Dews I’ve seen, this one is the one I always think of first! Rocking Stones/NFA with a spirited Day Job. I liked Day Job, but by now it was getting a tad old, and was a disappointment for this show considering how high it was at that point. A She Belongs or Baby Blue would of been a perfect Cherry on top, but perhaps that’s being greedy?
Now since the weather was such a factor, we must discuss that and how it influenced this show. The second set starts out with their “signing in the rain” as Bob says, and it’s a good’n! Next they slowly slid into an unusual sounding Tom Thumbs which I had never heard yet, and wasn’t even sure at first what it was, but hey, it was Phil so that’s all I needed to know! Good but perhaps truncated Estimated, followed by an awesome Terrapin. So as the set started to progress, so did the weather until (I think?) around Estimated it really started to clear up and they started pulling the plastic tarps down. It was almost like you could immediately hear it get better after each one was removed. Eventually by about Terrapin, they tarps we’re gone, the moon and stars were out, and Healy started increasing the volume and tweaking the mix. I remember we were goading him to turn it up, and man eventually he sure did!
As the night wore on it began to warm up a bit too. But as you’ve heard this scenario, or been there yourself, many times I didn’t feel quite high enough so what the hell, one more time with the powder veggie crumbles just before drums......hee-hee....you know, “I’m not feeling it?” and then...Dooah!
So the problem with those baseball jackets is they don’t really breath and the electric Buffalo Hyde was thick plastic. We didn’t have all the nice technical outer gear we have now, or at least WE didn’t. I could barely afford the free plastic one from the old mans work.
Well a perfect storm mounted; little or no food, Elephants, veggies etc, no sleep, excess everything and underlying exhaustion, with me starting to overheat due to the above and dancing with that plastic shell on. Things were going unbelievable well, and partly influenced by the very recent passing of my Grandfather, during Dew, things peaked musically, the sound, the night, the stars, emotionally etc etc until I had one of the most powerful musical/emotional/psychedelic peak experiences of my life. Perhaps my all time GD moment, it was that powerful. But what goes up must come down and just like that the radiator blew and that last handful of shroom dust fully kicked in and somewhere in Throwing Stones, right during ashes, ashes all fall down, well.....I say i didn’t really fall down, it was more like an immediate realization that if I don’t sit down rapidly, I’m going down! LOL, so one way or another, depending on who you believe, I end up down in the soft, cool mud until near the end of the song, but I swear just as I tried to get up I knew it wasn’t going to happen, so right on que again I go back down. My friends to this day always bring up my perfectly coreographed “Dance moves” above all else that happened on this tour..35 years later and it’s still “ashes, ashes, Pedro falls down” !
That would of all been well and good except things were very strange and weren’t wearing off, and I was barely functioning. I never would of found the car etc If not for my homies. Honestly all I remember is them pulling into a Wendy’s or something, but I just sat in the car with my face literally stuck to the window and crackled! Zzzzttttt. I really thought I had finally fried some essential circuits and thought this time I really did it. At some point I snapped out enough to find some kids in another car staring at me with a look of concern if not fear. Luckily, the boys finished up and came out and got us outta there. Somewhere near the state line we finally grabbed a motel as we all had had more than enough rain and adversity. Plus the next day was off and the drive short. I remember they propped me up in bed and I just sat and crackled and worried. Eventually I slept and though I felt better the next day, I didn’t feel normal and don’t recall much except when we got to Merriweather and found a good spot just over the creek, right next to the path, in some trees, on the way to the big parking lots to the right of the venue. But now it was nice and I was feeling more normal so not so freaked out. I also remember going to a nearby sorta plaza with an upscale liquor store where I scored my first sixer of EKU 28 ever which was awesome!
So now we’ve moved beyond the insanity of TOGA, the adversity and majesty of Hershey, and ready for perhaps the best overall show of the tour on 6/30/85....

EDIT: Otis, congrats on the stereo. All that matters is if your happy with it. After all the specs and hyperbole etc, no matter how big, small, expensive etc, in the end, that’s all that counts!

Nice rec for the TDIGDH 6/28/76 show! I'd never heard that one before, and it is pretty sweet. The "Happiness is Drumming" is certainly a highlight!

I have been out of the loop for a bit - trying to deal with some personal stuff on my end, and I just kind of lost track of things around these parts. I hope to be able to participate more going forward.

To that end, how about a pick for tomorrow, Monday 6/29? I am thinking Dave's 31 - 12/3/79 Uptown. I feel like this pick got a short shrift on the DaP page, but I remember being very happy with it, though I haven't given it a proper listen since it first came out. What do you all think?

One positive thing that I have accomplished since I've been away has been the set up of my first component stereo system. I don't know if it compares to all of your "big boy" systems, but it certainly feels BIG in my little row home! Looking forward to playing it LOUD tomorrow when the wife goes to work.

Voodoo senile, slight return. 6/27/85, and why 85 Dead is like

First, GOGD, I did not mean to single you out, over generalizations, which become stereotypes, which become truth etc, really bum me out. So it was more of a trigger to that, not you personally. I know you were just repeating this line.
Actually, as I’ve dug in deeper, there are probably a significant number of shows where he often doesn’t sound so good, but to over generalize that “his voice was shot”, as in never more, to me, imho, that completely devalues and discounts all the amazing, great sounding stuff he was still able to do. 87,88,89,90,91anyone? Micro view versus macro perhaps?

SECOND: I must humbly recant my tale of dancin in the rain. As we were diligently experiencing TOGA last night. Too things became apparent. First, perhaps JG was a tad “caffeinated” at the start of both sets. Listening close on a real system, (not the big boy, but the living room system which ain’t no slouch!), he seems a tad to fast and/or their not fully entrained. One could argue not fully so until Women Are?...so probably something to do with him totally skipping the Key Rain Storm, and Jailhouse versus, of Bertha, lol.
Thus, while I wasn’t deceitful, I was not accurate. Sure enough, when Holmes and Watson ripped a spleef and fired up Bertha from SPAC 6/24/84, and bingo, ding, ding, ding, ding! Right venue, wrong year! 😂 Ooops, my apologies to the dear reader...but hey, it’s a fun interesting new tid bit, and it did rain, I think, lol.
While doing this research I was listening just on the iPad and interestingly he doesn’t sound as bad? Also, I’ve been going with the HS matrixes, especially shows where I want to hear those crowd big moments. Generally they’ve been pretty good, but researching, I used a CM transfer and man, definitely a big difference. Perhaps number one being the speed/time of the Miller seemed better and more natural?
Subjective I know, just that it’s interesting how every variable can effect perceptions.
6/27/85: so this beast is still as much of a rocket sled ride as I’ve thought, but it’s perhaps a tad more unpolished then I would of said in the past. But that’s being picky, and you know I prefer danger dead to safe, so as at this moment, Hell in a bucket is scorching, I stick by this show for that, the cool set list, and the fact that eventually, say around Women Are on out, that part of the show stands with its lofty summer 85 neighbors. Probably have to give 6/24& perhaps 6/25? a slight advantage overall, but man I haven’t been to many shows that had the vibe, fun, and overall madness of this puppy.

So why is 85 Dead like Bode Miller? He often was criticized for his erratic style, or lack thereof, his nonconformity, often disregard for the rules, including parting then basically going 80 MPH down an insane pitch, that was usually hosed down to make it more icy, and thus faster! So just like this era of Dead, sometimes he’d DQ, sometimes he’d slack off, sometimes it was ugly, but when he brought it, that mofo brought it!! and when he was able to be one with the force, it was fucking breathtaking! Scary, but breathtaking. No matter what, if he was racing there was an energy, an excitement, that larger than life vibe......that, to me, is 85 Dead.
FINALLY: Ladies and Germs, May I present the Electric Buffalo Hyde! as christened by my degenerate cohort due to my resemblance of the great beast of the prairies back in the day, and this baby used to be so bright people would ask if there were batteries. But Alas, like youth itself it’s faded dramatically, and is old and bartered. It definitely gave it’s all to R&R. So many Dead shows, festivals, camping, parties, you name it! Also, it will be a part of an unfortunate situation at the next night, where I lost my shit in Hershey! So until then....

I don't love Miracle...

... but I also don't hate it, and coming out of Space is the perfect place for it.

Wish I could have seen the boys in some sort of prime - my one and only show was 6/25/95, which I loved, but knowing what I know now, it was far from a peak performance. At least I got to see Jerry, and when he came out and rocked "Rainy Day Women" with Dylan - that was cool! Plus, I heard them play a lot of my favorite tunes, if somewhat sloppy.

Saw the two Giant's shows 6/6 was good then skipped The Palace, Buckeye and Rich Stadium only to end up in Kentucky for two nights 6/15 was good skipped Chicago saw three at Deer Creek and the two at RFK met up with friends that dropped two of us off at Freedom Hall and the next day took a tour of D.C. before heading home.

Shows Attended

A sore point with me.. as during a move about 15 years ago, an ex gf threw away the folder with all my ticket stubs. Until that very moment, I had a pretty much photographic memory. Now, nothing but questions. It's amazing how much our memory relies on some sort of physical media. If that sounds crazy, well.. it might be, but photographs and physical objects are such powerful reminders.

The real kick in the ass is, she also threw away all my pictures, every single one... simply because some contained pics of me that included ex girlfriends.

No wonder I can't remember shit.

Alpine 87-88. Those were some unbelievable times.
Like Jim, I do not remember all the shows song by song like some others do, but, for some reason the first night of the 87 Alpine run, I can still remember the Feel Like a Stranger opener and my buddies and I running down the hill to try and find a spot. I always remember the Tons of Steel from that night as well. What a time! 87 for us was different from our first experience at Alpine in 86. Of course it was two weeks or so after that Jerry slipped into the comma. At the time, I didn't think we would get to see the band again. What a run after that!
GOGD, do you remember the drought in 88 at Alpine? It was crazy. We had campers in those days 87-89. I just remember 88 was so hot and we always had tons of people coming to our camper looking for water. In those days, we had tons of beer, but not much water.
Some of my best memories of all those years at Alpine was after the shows in the parking lot talking to other heads about all aspects of the shows, the band, Jerry, what the encore will be the next night, etc. Similar to what we do here. Man, seems like so long ago, but I think about those days a lot and no band has ever come close to that feeling of seeing the Dead live. There are a huge group of people here that were at those shows at Alpine, this one is for you guys and gals!
At some point in time, we will see some of these late 80s Alpine shows released.

My wife has asked me as I am watching the Shakedown Stream shows, we will see you in the crowd on some of these?
My response, only if they play Downhill from Here.

@ Good old Grateful Dead: I had to think about this one, that was a long time ago, and it was my first dead show. What I do remember about the show was the crowd, what a cool bunch of people, and the twirlers, my first time seeing them and they were everywhere, in the back, in the halls, in the bathrooms, everywhere there was a space, they were twirling. I'm pretty sure we all dosed that night, we did that a lot in the 70's. I have Dick's picks 29 which has this show and the Atlanta show if I'm not mistaken and the band was in tune and doing the "just exactly perfect" thing but I don't remember one tune they played that night. I also remember the tye dye, it was also everywhere and the stage had a huge tye dye mural in the background, most of the speaker covers were tye dyed too, as were a lot of the crowd.
I had heard a few dead songs before going to this show and was interested, but not a deadhead yet and believe it or not, this show did not transform me into one, not that night anyway, it was the April 80 show that did that. I remember getting close enough to get a good look at Donna on stage, she was ok but I had seen bands with chick singers and she just did not impress me. I prefered Grace who in my opinion had a much better voice and was just lovely to look at. With that said I do believe that it was Donna that left me uninspired and the main reason I did not get on the bus that night. I think a lot has to happen for one to get "it" and this performance just didn't have it and the civic center, even tho it was newish, having opened in the 70's, it was still a cavern with not the best acoustics. But three years later, I jumped on the bus big time and turned a lot of younger heads later on to this band, still my favorite band after 40 + years.

That's a shame, a damn shame. The was just before she died in that tragic kayak accident, right? The river was running hard and fast and you begged her not to go out that day. It was only by the grace of GOD did you survive. I read the report about how you kept diving into the cold water time and time again to look for her, but, alas she was gone. But that's one secret you can never tell.

Early Morning Jamming - BCT 8/25/72

Got out of bed way too early for some reason, but had a chance to put on today's pick and listen to most of set 1 without interruption. Really strong 1st set! I love the placement of "Black Peter" and all of the regular tunes are played very well. Just finished with that beautiful "Bird Song" before the wife came down and life started again, so I am going to have to save "Playin'", "Bertha" and the short Set II for later on today, but that 1st set was a great way to start the day!

For no good reason at all, this is another pick that doesn't get as much play from me, but after this morning's initial listen, I think that is going to change!

The weather was getting ominous, my first show at Alpine, was totally ripped, and I start hearing horns and weird shit, I’m trying to see the stage, thinking is there a guest performer or something, more midi weirdness in Eyes > Drums, I didn’t know what Midi was or how they were doing that, it was eating my mind, by the time they got to the ripping All Along The Watchtower (broke out 6/20/87 that year, so it was new) the weather had gotten pretty dicey, that Watchtower sounded truly Wicked in it’s delivery and tone. The boys laid it on us that night. I bought the ticket and took the ride. It’s a night I’ve always remembered. We slowly strolled out of the show went and found our tent, partied, crashed, woke up and did it again the next day in the sun!

1988 - 2 shows, break, 2 more shows - Yeah it was hot and dry as dirt that summer as reported. I loved the break day.. we were kids, so not having water didn’t seem to effect us, we were probably drinking soda.. who knows. But we hopped in my buddy’s convertible on the day off, drove around until we spotted a pool in someones back yard, and we all ran and hopped in it to cool off and get a dip, then ran back to the car dripping wet, dived in and sped off. It felt so good, we were so hot and dirty and it was dry as a bone. Sorry folks, but we needed your pool and you weren’t in it.

At the time I never thought those would be the days, but those were the days!

THE TAPES:
Sadly the Alpine tapes seem to have issues.
1987 - No SBDs in Circulation still! Been waiting for 33 years, and even if we had them, which we don’t, they probably sound like ass, like so many ’87 shows. Healy was experimenting with UltraMatrix that year and lots of ambient noise got baked into most of those tapes.

1988 - Healy strikes again! Dan was doing some type of panning of the sound through the speakers, I can’t remember where I read / heard, think it was GD Hour, maybe Lemieux. Anyhow, it creates a type of “warble” sound in the recording, I’ve got those SBDs and they’re a bit hard to listen to due to the consistent “warble” through out. All 4 nights have it, I think the last night has it least.

Another Flash - 6/20/88 - The sun setting as they played Terrapin. I still remember that as a favorite moment, was way back on the hill on the lawn lots a space, just taking it in, looking at the moon. I’d just seen a new Brent Song (Turned out to be first Blow Away unbeknown to us at the time / pre-internet / phones / technology) and that had rocked me, we were big Brent Fans.

Regarding 8/27/72 as close to perfect, I wanted anything similar to that, this show might be the closest thing too it IMO.

If not, I wanna hear your picks people, what other shows remind of you of Veneta, which I (and maybe many others?) think might be the perfect show.

....alright. I finally got off my lazy ass and listed them. I seriously didn't think I'd seen them that many times to be honest. That's a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches and kind veggie burritos my friends. What is really amazing is i have all but three of the ticket stubs still in my possession.

edit. it appears there are no full show recordings there. Might have to wait until i get home. Think I'll listen to some Kinks in the meantime. Been feeling Kinky the past week or so.

FOURWINDSBLOW - 1989

Looking at your shows attended, I thought you'd say that, but wanted to hear it.

I missed the entirety of 1989.. was out of the Country.

When I happened to catch a Dead show at the Frankfurt Festhalle in October 1990 (In reflection a tiny place to see the Dead!) I started hearing from other American DeadHeads that they'd just played Dark Star in Berlin... What the FUCK?!?!

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. What have I been missing I thought to myself... turns out a lot of really good Grateful Dead shows in 1989 & 90!

I'ma gonna check out some of those shows you mentioned at some point.

First, watching Shakedown last night (I thought the sound was weak at best), anyway, noticed in the youtube chat that goes on beside the show and saw the name Stoltzfus! Was that you?

Shows attended - Guess I'll have to type them in since everyone seems to be :-) Yes, I have all my tix stubs. I think I have every tix stub from every show, play and movie me and the old lady went to. (40 years together, can I call her the old lady? :-) Believe me, in 40 years I've used many other terms. Hell, I even tried to get her to go kayaking with Jim's GF) Besides "stubs", my buddy made a list of every show we did, every song they did and how we rated them. He included who was there. In my notes I also included where we sat. Hell, had to something between songs while tripping balls, right? But years ago, he printed them off in a small booklet about the size of a credit card. It's always on my desk just so I can look up shows and say, hey, we were there.

Here's the tip - Once signed in, click Archive > Search Venue, Year > Enter Year > Find Show You Want Click It > Mark as Attended. It’s a bit hooky but it works, go top down first to last.

Great memories for sure, thanks for sharing. Yes, 88, with the four shows and the break day were something. We would head to Lake Geneva for the day. Really fun times. That part of Wisconsin is really fun.

Vguy, took a look at your list, Wow! Impressive. I would have loved to see the band at Shoreline in the late 1980s. Would love to hear some stories when you get off work.

My first two shows....

....i spent pretty much just people watching. I didn't get IT until Long Beach '87. After that show it was full steam ahead. The Anaheim show is View From The Vault One. I've spent a long time trying to find myself in the crowd because i know roughly where I was standing on the floor, but i keep eluding myself lol.
Biggest regret? Not going to more Cal Expo shows. That place was awesome.

There are some rough spots here and there and a flub in Bertha. This show has a unique sound to it and it's mostly cause of Phil.

WOW, what a PIA. First the list formed on your account will be in "entered" order and there appears to be no way to sort. Then the dates when you pull up the "archive" are 1 day off. My first 4/1/80 show was under 3/31/80. After you enter "I was at this show", there is no way to go back to the next date. So lets say you went to a 9/1/85 show and a 9/2/85 show. You say show me 85, gives a list of all 85 shows, but only 4 shows show at a time. So to get to September you may have to advance 15 pages. You get to the 9/1 show, mark I was there, but the only way back it seems is to the 'home' page. So you enter 1985 again, forward 15 pages and do the same for 9/2. God help you if you were at 9/3 also :-)

So I started putting them in, but will have to redo if I want my 80 show before my 82 show!

Alpine 87

I can"t believe these shows were not taped with all the people taping at that time cassette's, PCM tapes and only five days later they had the audio truck to tape the Dead and Dylan shows. Were there screens are they on video? Just curious thanks.

"Playin'" is really nice! Keith in particular sounds great in the middle of the jam. Summer and Fall 72 "Playin's" are hard to beat, though there is a lot of stiff competition! "Bertha" starts HOT! then... whoops! Jerry, as he often did, makes up for his mistake with a fiery little solo - then another near train-wreck, this time by Bobby (and maybe Phil) but they hold it together. Nice! By the end, Jerry is truly WAILING!

Set II - it may be a strangely short one, but they start right off in the deep end! "Truckin>bass solo>TOO" - Madness! (Why have I let this pick go unplayed for so long? Pure foolishness...) Spiraling jam, chasing itself and nearly disintegrating, resolving and revolving back to nearly boil over again and again (Billy!)... verse one at around the 6 minute mark, 22 more to go and - INTO pure exploration! Minute 12, and we are groovin! Phil has been particularly strong this show. This is a great Other One! Fractal melt instead of verse 2 and...

Sweet "Stella"...

This is a great pick. Perhaps I was originally turned off by the short second set, but it is just about perfect.

Highlights - "Black Peter", "Bird Song", "Playin'", Jerry's playing on "Bertha" for set 1 - "Truckin > TOO > Stella" for set II.

On to Dick's 28 (which I just got, thanks to a heads up!)

I don't remember any screens... It was dark and rainy and I was tripping balls.

But no SBDs in circulation as of 4/25/20.

For 6/26/87 only 2 Audience Recordings circulate and are pretty much the only sources that've circulated from these shows since '87. One of these sources is the copy we got after the show once we got home and it's got some bad tape flips. Been waiting and waiting and waiting.

Honestly, the first night is the one I really would like a SBD of, just to hear that Midi Madness a bit more clearly, but I'm assuming it'd be a muddy UltraMatrix if it ever does pop up. It might be one of those had to be there shows.. but it's trippy!

Berkeley '72

Yeah, this show smokes.. The band just plays so good in '72 especially August '72 and the PITB from this year are amazing and I love to get lost in them.. this Other One is dreamy too especially the return to Spanish Lady... sounds so good!
