The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

There actually are laws that define pornography. And If you host a website with a message board such as this, and you allow pornography to be accessed through it, you are also hosting pornography and therefore are responsible to abide by the laws and regulations that govern the distribution of pornography (such as posting a message that identifies the site as having adult content). Yes there are laws that apply to copywrite protection. You're admitting in your argument that it's okay to break that law because you see it regularly. Why don't YOU man up and stand up for a law that is actually being violated. No, I don't personally use youtube to listen to music I didn't pay for. And yes, I think if someone is being obnoxious with their postings, better to snuff it out than call it free speech. What shirdeep posts a new link every 30 seconds, so that you have to scroll through a mile of his postings just to use the message board for what it was intended to be used for? Is that okay? Not even you can defend that as free speech, but you're going to decide what constitutes the degree of obnoxiousness that will be tolerated? (you know it when you see it, right? shoe's on the other foot). Shirdeep's postings serve no purpose for this site as it was intended to be used, a lot of people have asked him to stop, and he keeps posting more. That's not free speech. It's great that you seem to be some kind of free speech / civil rights activist, however, you're defense of this particular issue is fanatical. For all you know, shirdeep is in bot mode. You sound like a good guy, but this ain't about free speech in any shape way or form. Not a judge in town that would agree with you. I take offense to your telling people to "man-up" because they're not fighting your fringe free speech argument. Your assignment for the day is to go to youtube and find 10 videos that are posted in violation of copywrite laws, and report them to youtube (hint - I'll know if you didn't do your homework by your daily report to me, which I'll be accepting no later than 5pm Pacific).

While you are 100% correct the owners of a private web site have every right to make their own rules to say they have a responsibility is an obscenity. Define pornography. Yeah just like Justice Potter Stewart you know it when you see it or if you don't like it. And for copyright you're kidding right? Everyday on this site it's violated but you like it so it's ok. Many here,I believe. like to think we're different and hold to a higher standard. And don't think it's such a good idea to take the role of personal arbiter. Especially when the person in question is not personally attacking a specific person but simply acting in an obnoxious manner. We are loosing a bit more each day as in my earlier mentioned private schools speech codes. Another example is the ACLU's recent announcement that in its own Orwellian way some speech is more important than others and they will stop fighting for certain unpopular speech....a disgrace. Man up and fight for something we have more of than any other country in the world, constitutionally protected free speech. Not Canada not France not even England. Marye please think long and hard before you censor an unpopular post

Pollan book

Yes, that is a great book. Pollan gives such a unique perspective. Whereas most people first experiment with psychedelics in their youth, he does it in middle age, as a self-described "square". He gives a great description of listening to a Bach cello suite on mushrooms. Also, he describes an awful experience smoking toad venom (ouch!) There are some great conversations with Pollan on youtube, with Joe Rogan and Sam Harris, among others.

Psychedelics-Roguedeadguy

Interesting book published earlier this year called "How To Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics" by Michael Pollan. I would be doing it a disservice by trying to paraphrase it, but it does reframe the various drugs perceived histories, and suggests ways to overcome the baggage of the past, so that they might be beneficially integrated into mainstream society. Fascinating book.

If I host a website and I don't like what somebody has to say, it's my right to disable them, and I violate no law by doing so. This message board is an extension of a business. If people are providing links to copyrighted material or pornography, then the web host has a responsibility to shut that person down.

Jim, I've heard about that same doctor who uses psychedelics. NPR did a story on it. Their reporter had to go "undercover" to get the scoop for themselves. Rough life sometimes. The doctor sets you up in his office, and gives you some headphones. Sounds good so far . . . Except he insists that the patient listens to his own "curated" playlist. It sounded like a lot of classical, and ambient sounds type of stuff. I'd show up with my FW 69 box and be like "Yo doc, I got this." Later on the reporter talked about how every time he listens to that piece of music it "takes him back.". "Research shows that sensory experiences under psychedelics can leave lasting imprints." Mrs. Deadguy and I look at each other and snicker. Research, huh? I guess that's what you could call it.

Very excited to see these getting the treatment. Wondering why the crucial 72' Seattle and Portland shows are not in this. Those 3 years(72', 73', 74') tell such a story and are the most coveted recordings in general. I am however very grateful...

Love love love this. We got our Summer '73 box! Summer dead always makes me smile, and 2 summers worth is a real treat. And the option of multi year boxes opens up the possibility of a multi year MSG, or Boston, Berkeley, Alpine, Shoreline,(enter any city here) boxes. Dizzying.... the possibilities.

I'm always excited when a new release will be a great improvement over what I have. This looks like it will be that. I ordered both cd and vinyl. (don't tell the wife) On the ordering front,,, maybe it was so easy because it seemed to be on the downlow. I didn't (or at least haven't gotten one yet) an email announcement. Maybe they thought less splash would help "fans" get theirs before "ebayers". So, in the next 3 months, a new 45, Aoxomoxoa, DaP 27 and a box set! Wow, that large sucking sound is coming from your wallet!

Totally worth the wait...

So... I'd been patiently waiting for the box set announcement, and this DID NOT DISAPPOINT! These shows are all really good. The Vancouver show from 6/22/73 (my 3rd Birthday, I might add) is absolutely top-notch. To me, it's in the same conversation w/ Veneta, Cornell, Englishtown, Bickershaw and acoustic/electric shows at the Fillmore East. I cannot wait for this gem to show up on my porch! Peace, brothers and sisters. 10 days until Alpine Valley!
