85 Greek continued

6/15&16/85: finished it up 15th this AM. Have had this full show, but only second set of first night, and have never heard the 16th until today! Some what mixed bag like much of 85. “85 is like a box of chocolates, most good, some you get that one ingredient you don’t like, and a few are dosed”) 😎
Though the first and last nights prolly look more sexy on paper: Keep on Growing, last Stagger Lee 82, last Comes a time 80, Set opening Dew, and the Cryptical etc., I think maybe the second night is the best played overall? And we get a FOTD, scorching Might as Well, and of course yet another sweet She Belongs to Me. I’d definitely say it’s between the first 2, as the last night seems less tight? JG definitely having some issues from like Cryptical on..
Yes it’s cool as hell to hear it, (though I want to find a Aud version to hear the crowd go nuts, they sure did in Meriwether!) But Jer does not sound very confident so it’s not all it could be. After something going on? Brokedown ends it on a good note at least.
Yeah, this 16th is a classic 85 roller coaster. Wharf Rat a good example: Jer’s stumbling, but Brents organ and some of Bob and Brents harmonies are amazing. Yeah, shits all over the place sometimes lol.
Never made it to the Greek, but from all accounts and documentation I imagine it was top shelve, so seeing a weekend of these shows at that venue....I can barely imagine. Well it sure was fun. Haven’t really checked these out in a while (or at all), but my recollection is the heart of the summer tour is more so where the meat and potatoes are? Hope to confirm that as I’m going to try and do this tour starting next weekend. I mean what the hell, it’s the 35 anniversary of probably my favorite?, craziest (definitely), most fun (probably), tour!
Tonight Vault View 3 I believe it is, from 6/16/90. Hit the last Shoreline 90 mañana, then need some 70s in between, perhaps revisit the 76 box fir a good deep brain scrub, then everybody into the pwuel, cause summer 85 is back and the time is right for dancin in the streets....unless perhaps your African American cause they’ll look ya up for that shit in some places! Harumph!

EDIT: always glad to have brother Otis along for the ride! The more the merrier eh!

OTIS - Glad you're peaking at the Greek with us.

So upon revisiting these old favorites from Berkeley June '85 I've decided the following:
Are they the hottest thing ever? No.
Does Jerry's voice sound pretty shot? Yes.
Is it the bands 20th Anniversary and despite adversity and multiple challenges do the band rise to meet the occasion? Yes.
Do they break out Cryptical Envelopment after 13 years of not playing it on the last night of the run? Yes, yes they do.
Are these 3 shows enjoyable? Definitely.

Finishing up Night 2 now.. wasn't able to get to it on it's anniversary. And really all 3 nights are cool.

I'd be slightly disappointed if they chose to release one of these and not the other 2.

That being said, I'm pretty sure the tapes we have are from the Cassette Master which, as far as we know, is what's in the Vault.

So the big question, as I see it, would be how much would the plangent process increase the quality?
And I'd be happy to find out the answer to that question.

I'm not holding my breath. So in the meantime, I say, dust off or grab these 3 SBDs from your nearest Charlie Miller source and open up a copy of the Taper's Compendium V2 and enjoy a little bootleg box set glory!

Ain't no time to wait...

Greek Box

I know that it has been mentioned numerous times in the past, but it is WAY past due for TPTB to collect these Greek shows, shine em' up, and give us a Greek Box, a la The Giants Box. Looking at their history, they could go in a number of ways. I would like to see maybe 2 boxes, Greek 1: 1981-1985, and Greek 2: 1986-1989. Choose the BEST overall show from each year, 4 shows per box.

Or, make it a bigger box with all 8? I don't know, but I do know that I want it. Or hell, it looks like they played the Greek 27 times...

This 85 show is slaying me right now, and I'm only 4 songs into the 1st set! I'm glad Brent eventually got invited to the party 1/2 through "Walkin's Blues" :) Another hot pick!

Summer 85

Gratefulhan: what GOGD said! And don’t forget 7/13/85, at least the first set. The band, the hills around them, everything’s on FIRE! If nothing else, be sure to check out 6/27,28,30, but the whole tour is good. Summer 85 is like this nice little oasis between the eras you mention. I’m extremely biased because it was probably my most fun year, but I love the music too, worts and all. There’s something dangerous and exciting. They often really go for it and at times your sure their going to jump the track, but they usually pull it off. I guess it’s they A++ for effort versus safe but perfect execution?

Ok, have to finish 6/15/85, then the mighty 6/16/85, and later, I’m going fire up the 6/16/90 DVD tonight on the big screen.

GRATEFULHAN - There's definitely some good stuff in the early 80s.

And FWIW, Summer '85 is a blast.

The 6/24/85 Riverbend release has always been a favorite, but don't stop there.
6/25 Blossom, 6/27 SPAC, 6/28 Hershey Park, 6/30 & 7/1 Merriweather. A highly recommended tour and a really fun run of tapes.

And speaking of, today is the anniversary of 6/16/85 and the brief return of Cryptical Envelopment.

Highly recommended because it's fun!

OROBOROUS - Dude, dug 6/15/90. Especially that interesting jam after He's Gone into Drums. Fast paced Scarlet > Fire and the opening HSF were tops. Good times!!

Alright, started up the 6/16/85 show and Bob's talkin' Walkin' Blues and it sounds fresh.. because it is in '85.

Recent listens

As I have been acquiring releases in bunches, two of my recent additions are DP 32 (8/7/82) and DP 21 (11/1/85). I haven't been able to give them a proper listen until recently ( a rare benefit of the the COVID-19 lock down). I have to say I liked them both on the first go around. I knew DP 32 was wrought with sound/mixing issues but overall it was a good show. As for 11/1/85, I dug it and I am finding that I am really liking the 85 shows. In comparison to my usual listening of 69-77 or 89-91 eras, they are good shows, different, but still good. I need to check out the Riverbend 6/24/85 show from 30 Trips. I have heard good reviews on that and it also has a Cryptical.

This one seems to get better each time I listen to it. Maybe I am just appreciating the music more?
Almost five years since this was released.
Love the Cumberland opener, then into HCS. Really good. Another wonderful sixteen song first set. Really like this Half Step, Jerry's guitar sounds so pure. WRS prelude into Dark Star, Eyes than Playing! Love this show and you were there Strider, wow, really cool.

We should have Dave's 35 announced in roughly a month. Can't wait. No clue what it will be but I have my money on an eighties release.

So you helped me decide what up next. Best of Cali June '90 so far.. I like the sound of that.
The bands tuning up as we speak, write, whatever you call this.
You probably called this based on the tuning.. sounds like some excited fans know what to expect.

Always been fascinated with the Oregon Dead connection and the impact Kesey and fam had on the 60s, San Francisco, and Oregon. Pretty wild stuff. That guy having so much impact on our world.

It was cool to watch Sunshine Days again, it'd been awhile.

And speaking of impact, 8:46 is definitely a heavy trip. Powerful stuff for sure.

Maybe best of the Cali June 90 so far? Seemed a little more energized than Cal Expo? Remember nothing of this one, but not sure why (yeah right!) as it’s a good one. Good H-S-F opener, Desolation Row, rest of the usual suspects all good...
2nd: nice Scarlet/Fire, Blow Away ok, but perhaps like Hornsby was saying last Friday about his and other songs, sometimes, eventually, the band was starting to be a tad over this one? Same with 7/16/90, it’s ok, but this song definitely seemed to peak in 89, imho...same with this Women Are, good, but not quite up with the 89s?, did dig the weird jam though. Didn’t get to engage in the rest as much, had it cranked doing housework... but don’t recall anything notable, either pro/con, just another solid, enjoyable 90 show! Lol, makes that sound like a bad thing! Words...we should be able to communicate without them!
Ok, on to 6/15/85, not sure I’ll get to Scooby Doo house today, but I listen to that one often so no biggie.

Tomorrow 6/16/85, and video of 6/16/90 tomorrow night in the theatre...in case anyone’s interested..

That Spectrum Show

I always liked that Spectrum show. It got beat up when released for sound quality, but for the era, it sounds quite good compared to most of the rest. I think it sounds better than the RT 1.1 a mix, but a lot from the Spectrum 79 run.

It's a cool little show and one of my early cassettes. It's got a short and potent TOO into a soulful Morning Dew. In 82, to my ears, Jerry could still deliver those mournful, soul-felt lyrics. On a good night in 82 his voice still sounded fresh. This might be the last year that was true, but I certainly liked the way he sang in the later years too. Visions and She Belongs to Me comes to mind.

Anyhow.. cheerio folks.. have a great night. Play your favorite show like it's 1999.

Edit: I am partial to 4/19/82 and 4/9/83 from that era, but I am biased.

His birthday today. Saw him in April 1973 in Phoenix, Freddie King opened.
Curtis’ song “(Don’t Worry) If there’s a hell below, We’re all going to go” is a classic. One of the most powerful live concerts I ever went to, that includes the Grateful Dead.

The other 2/27/77 maybe? They have 1 reel from that show, but I don’t think that reel was in the Vault until the Betty Boards return.

I believe you are correct. 6/4/77.. one of the best shows of the year and one of the worst surviving recordings. Talk about Murphy's Law.

Murphy, turns out he was a real guy. "Named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an engineer working on Air Force Project MX981." (The Desert Wings March 3, 1978). The phrase was coined at Edwards Air Force Base in 1949.

Decent Audience Recording

I like the sound of this 6/4/77 Audience Recording by Rob Bertrando it’s a solid recording. And definitely good by ‘77 standards. Good separation and ambience. Digging it.

Definitely a solid show and way cool set list, almost has a mojo style jam as they head into NFA.

Man can’t imagine what we’d of done without Taper’s. They were such an important part of the Dead music trading phenomenon.

Hats off to Taper’s. You all purchased gear, got tickets, traveled, smuggled, got hassled, went in early just to record the shows. And then shared them with all of us. That’s hardcore. I had a hard time just keeping track of my, ticket, party favors and mind.

You're both right.. it's a crisp, great audience recording. my comment was in comparison to the rest of the year, which with a few exceptions was mostly miss Betty, and the exceptions were great recordings as well.

I didn't meant to say it sucked, more that all the other recordings were beyond exceptional.

Carry on.. just rereading shit, sometimes my words six hours later don't always match my intentions.

A great show.. one of the best of the year and still in my active rotation 4 1/2 years after 30 trips... The energy coming out of the space through the rest of the show is palpable.

Hot damn! 6/4/77 is a scorcher! I have never really minded decent AUDs, and like was mentioned, this AUD is really pretty good, especially considering how long ago it was. I think it was "Candyman" in Set 1 that made me really sit-up and pay attention, then, of course, that second set is tough to beat by the standards of any era! Thanks for pointing us in that direction!

I agree with DeadVikes - let's keep this thread rolling! I have been finding a lot more solace here than on the DaP34 page, especially as of late. Also, I have always thought that it was way more fun to dig into and discuss a wide variety of shows rather than focusing on one specific era of the band. This is my favorite little corner of the internet, and I hope it doesn't dry-up any time soon.

DEADVIKES & OTIS: Glad to hear you all are hip to keep this thread going.. felt like it might be dying. And I agree with OTIS in regards to the vibe. I peak at them other threads.. but they’re like Space sometimes they get a little tense, sometimes a little scary :)

AUDIENCE RECORDINGS:
When I know there’s NO SBD in existence at this point. I can really dig a good Audience recording. If there’s a SBD I tend to wanna go to it first. But I think you really gain a different perspective when listening to Audience tapes, and hell after all the crappy tapes I had growing up, these 1st gen Audience recordings sound better than those. And often times sound pretty damn sweet. I'm looking at you June '83.

9/18/87 - Set 1

Yes, it is a 6-pack, but man-oh-man, I really enjoyed it!

For the 2nd day in a row, it is "Candyman" that is the first set winner, though I enjoyed all of the other tunes as well. "Masterpiece" is def. my fav. Bobby Weir Dylan tune, and this whole set has a lot of really strong energy.

I have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to 87, as I think that the short sets turned me off in the past. However, with the release of the Giants' Box, and some suggestions from this board and another friend, I am finding more and more about 87 that I love.

Looking forward to Set II - "Shakedown" opener - you know I love that!

There is a ton of great shows in 1987, were are a lucky bunch.

Damn, you’d think with all this “extra” time I wouldn’t be so damn busy....sigh, falling behind again....
Been spending a little extra time with 11/1/85. Hadn’t broke this out in forever either, hee-hee you guys have been really pulling out so many awesome chestnuts that I’ve neglected trying to keep up with all the great new stuff I’ve picked up the last couple years.
Anyway, good show, Jer drops a few clams and they seem to get a little less in sync later in, but that’s nit picking. What? 5 or 6 tunes before drums, including High Time. Always dig She Belongs to me. Used to think this was a scratch your head pick, meaning imo there are many better 85 shows, and as this is only one of 2 from this great year released, it used to puzzle me. Now, I’m glad we have at least the 2 we do....oh, the Riverbend is definitely a Boobie Dazzler. Got me psyched to go deep on 85 since it will be 35 anniversaries of some of my favorite shows attended at least). Dipped into the Frost too. Going to start on the June 90 Cali shows next couple weeks as they were my first trip to the promised land with that 20 year old in tow and ran into ole Lee Esdee for the first time in forever at Shorline. Also hung with an X at the expo 😉 GOOD TIMES, good shows. I’ll have to have a video night for the 16th.....THEN....
Then we’ll start with those legendary Greek shows to start my 85 summer adventure, but first....
Will try to sneak that 9/18/87 in this weekend as that is a solid 87 show fo sure!

Don't forget to stop by Ventura for 7/13/85 & 7/14/85.. I hadn't listened to those in forever until someone mentioned them on the DaP forum and they're greeeeeat!

Some tapes just get emblazoned in your mind in those formative years and you know all the riffs & nuisances, 7/13 is like that for me.

Just started Hell in a Bucket. I've been listening to the '87 Giants Stadium show from the recent box and that show blows me away. Great time to revisit this one.

The Good Ole G / Curtis Mayfield

The April 1973 Curtis Mayfield concert in Phoenix was at the Celebrity Theater that has a round stage that revolves full circle. The audience was mostly African American. The feeling I got was Black Power with dignity and grace . I remember the bass player saying “power to the people means power to ALL the people”. My altered state of mind was real focused that night. Curtis Mayfield was truly a genius of soul and spirit.
Freddie King who opened for Curtis that night had quite the smile of joy as he picked a mean guitar.
Sometimes we only get one chance to see a great musician perform. Maybe that one time gives us a feeling and insight that stays with us for 50 years or more. Those two musicians did it.
JRF68 has gone fishing. A few years ago a gentleman on the boards expressed concern that he could not afford a new box set of his favorite era. JRF68 put out the call that he would help out. I threw in $20. and a couple other folks donated about the same. JRF payed the lions share. That man understands service for others. He deserves nothing less than respect.
So people go out and do something positive today , be it as simple as kind words for others.

I always thought when I was older I'd try to stay hip to the new music... But I find myself going further and further into what has come before. 1973 Curtis Mayfield on a revolving stage at the Celebrity Theater singing power to the people.. SHeeeeaaat!

Do you have all the GD shows you saw listed somewhere? I know it's a pain to list em on this here website, but I'd love to check that list out. You my friend have seen some epic shows.

Good old G...you should worry - I think I Iost direction with modern music somewhere in the mid 1980s. I wouldn't for a second put modern music down, but I would personally rather hear something form the 1950s/60s/70s than something recorded last week.

Good to know I'm not alone;)

In retrospect it was the popular music of the 1980s (which was just not doing it for me) that led me to classic rock which eventually led me to the Grateful Dead, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

But when you think about an artist like Curtis Mayfield, it's hard for me to compare the type of music he was making to the popular music I hear my daughter listening to.

I fear I'm getting old.

I'm trying to keep an open mind, but...
If you ask me the music that was happening in the '60s & '70s has a certain level of quality that is hard to beat.

Alright, that all being said, I finished 9/18/87, loved it, again.
Now I'm checking out a nice upgrade of the 3/31/93 SBD from Charlie Miller.
I guess that's "modern" music and it ain't bad;)

9/18/87 - A New Favorite!

Yep, that show is a smoker. Really love the variety of these 80s sets. The "Shakedown" "Women Are Smarter" "Terrapin" is one hell of a way to start a set, and the post-Drums/Space portion deserves all of the accolades that it has received. I love how energized they sound throughout the whole show.

The more and more I listen, the more and more I love this band. So much to give, and they ask so little in return (save for massive amounts of our time :)

What's on tap for tomorrow? It's going to be another humid scorcher here, so I am thinking I will hole up in the AC, play some tunes, and spend most of my day reading some obnoxiously long novels. Perhaps an equally long show?

Looking forward to the Shakedown Stream tonight! Also, I hope JRF returns one day - he's a good dude and has been a friend on these boards for a long time. Perhaps he will make an appearance around these parts - a lot of the drama seems to be absent here.

EDIT: Oh, the VAST majority of music that I listen to was recorded well before I was born. Phish, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, some Wilco... a smattering of other things here and there, but mostly 50s, 60s, and 70s for me too. I think it is pretty common, at least among my group of friends.

Great show. Good to hear you all enjoyed it. That finish is something. Morning Dew, Jerry gives it his all. Good Lovin, La Bamba, Good Lovin, pretty sweet. Solid encore.

Had to pull out the liner notes from this show, DL talks about this show as the best of the year. Not sure, but it is really good. I always thought the October Shoreline shows were pretty damn good. Hey Pocky Way!

Sorry for the delay. I got a little "too" into the Shakedown Stream last night and fell right asleep on the couch sometime during Drums/Space.

For today, how about something from the Pacific NW box? 6/24/73 Portland sound good? I've sort of lost track of where we've been, so if this is a repeat, I will offer up another suggestion.

Phew, went hard with the 7/7/89 last night. Oteil another great guest. I don’t know much about him and had never heard him speak before, so really enjoyed. Another amazing 89 show. Ok, going to have to do a double header today, both 9/18/87 and 6/24/73......that’s cool, good day for it.
A little gloomy (rain would be nice, please!....and the misses is at work since their forcing shit open way too early here. Numbers are already going back up, but hey, rich folk just HAVE to come and as Texas is currently a hot spot we’ll look forward to them bringing the plague with them as like half the state comes here for the summer...heaven forbid they couldn’t get their free DVDs and Internet, sorry, anyway its a good day to pump up the noise, ya das good!

Last time I was in step with popular music was the 70s when R&R was just as popular as “pop” music....did really enjoy much of the 90s music though. The rest, eehhhh not so much...
