Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Nice start, then…oh Bob lol

7/16/72: yep, ruff tape, good show. Glad I checked it.
3/29/68: another beauty. Nice recording, always dig a Sitting on Top, Death Don’t, and the usual suspects!
I bet there’s more of these old shows they could use. What gives Dave, WE WANT OUR PRIMAL BOX 66-70!

    Haven’t made it to 3/29/69 yet…

HOWDY JIMBO, good to see ya!

DBL EDIT: I think they have cassettes of some of those shows.
Pearson et el were part of the ultrasound crew and involved in the early R&D years with John Meyer. They cobbled together a bunch of stuff over the years, including a hybrid super system for the fall 80 shows. I have an old article some where (I think from modern recording magazine back then?) (shit, I should dig that out ) discussing the crazy stuff they were doing. Most folks don’t understand: technologically, the wall was child’s play compared to the Meyers ultrasound systems of the eighties onward. They started developing stuff way back in the early/mid seventies and we’re working behind the scenes for many years. They often would test new things they were working on in conjunction with the existing stuff. Literal work in progress! No different then pre and early wall shows etc.
They cobbled a set up together for certain test shows when able I,e., I believe 12/31/78 is an example.
The fall 80 shows were another big test run.
Anyway, it was many years of R&D before the fully formed Ultrasound sweetness most folks took for granted from like 1983 onward, but these guys pioneered so many changes and inventions over the course of decades that most folks don’t realize. Howard Danchik is another ultrasound unsung hero. Had the pleasure to talk to Howard and he was kind of enough to discuss some stuff at the one show I worked 7/1/92, while we were under the stage turning amps on.
I’m sure these guys wore many hats during such an important gig!
    What a crew!

Will try and fit that in today while I work.

ha.. just noticing the good doctor was up and posting at 4:06 am yesterday steering us towards more primal dead. In this world of trouble, we need more primal dead and I thank him for that.

As to the myriad of sound engineers working with the 1980 multi-tracks.. yes, I was aware but am still not sure what all that means. It looks like Betty and Dan worked the mix and the rest were involved in the recording. Certainly they had a sound truck out back for the whole run. My guess is all that work went into making those multi-tracks that were carefully erased to make room for the new Brent album that should be coming out any day now, I've been waiting a long for this.. it's going to be great.

I suspect there is more than what Lemieux will tip his hat towards, but it is probably true that complete shows from this run might be just beyond our grasp unless recorded on cassettes. Just a guess though, we can always hold hope.

How does that song go..... in this world of trouble, we've got love one another. Keep up the hope fellow heads.

Okay, looks like we need a pick. How does 9/16/87 from the Madison Square Garden sound ? The 18th was the 30 Trips show.

Unrelated, I was watching Dead Ahead a few nights ago and kept it on and watched the credits. First, they filmed both 10/30 and 10/31 nights. Would love to see the two full shows.

Second, as I was watching the credits, it listed recorded by Bob Matthews, John Cutler, Wizard and Don Pearson. Those are some very interesting names for the time period as I did not know Cutler or Pearson had any affiliation with the band in 1980. I also didn't know Wizard or Bob Matthews were still working with the band on recordings at this point. Seemed to indicate this was a professional recording with a professional crew?

Anyway, I know Dave bursted my bubble a couple of years ago, stated there will never be a multi track release of the Warfield/RCMH. However, I wonder if there are recordings somewhere from Pearson, Wizard? Wouldn't that be something?

So soon, another Daily Double? Thanks Doc, I’ll take Primal Dead for $1000……

When you go into the realm of a double role, you have to take it to another level to make it believable. With these two shows, the Dead clearly take it to that other level…..

March 29, 1968: There’s a nice Miller remaster out there, is it a soundboard, or stage mics? Either way, quite listenable. Kick it off with some major grease. Death Don’t second song in. Stand-alone Dark Star. Greasy gooey jammy grand finale. Can we hope that there’s a “new and improved “ copy in those banana boxes?

March 29, 1969: The band scorches Sin City with a wonderful psychedelic masterpiece. Grease and big jamming, what could go wrong?!! We had tapes of part of this way back in the day, and it was cherished. Now, worthy of official release, is it in those banana boxes too? Only time can tell…………..

I have doubted myself on several Daily Double answers……

The first set started out good, but yes, there appears to be weirdness going on with the recording. Peggy O and Queen Janes were good and I thought the Bird Song was great.
What happened in the second set? That Crazy Fingers seemed to be a struggle and don't know what happened to Jerry or the recording? But, there was a something going on.
They sure bounced back at Alpine a couple days later.

Pretty damn funny that Dave had a slice of Deer Creek '89 up this morning. I haven't had a chance yet for that show but couldn't help but notice that set list from Crazy Fingers onward which is def my kind of sequence.

I was only suggesting the Jam of the Week for 7/16/72 because of the lack of a recent circulating copy and knowing the vault source would be cleaner. I actually had the one circulating source as a POTD over a year ago. I know it starts with that somewhat weird unbalanced audience, had to have been recorded near/in front of a stack, which I could dig but others not so much, before it off and on transitions to the sbd. A crazy thing about the audience source is that all instruments and vocals are pretty well represented. The show isn't quite 7/18 but its solid '72 and which means some really really good music.

Edit - And now going back to it, yeah I seem to remember that Playing absolutely rips, only 5 songs into the show. God I love it! Like I said way back when, there is something about this audience source that puts me right there! Wowza!! Maybe my favorite straight-into-the-heart-of-the-sun '72 Playings.

And I love love love the Cold Rain and Snow that is song 2 of that audience ; ) And the Black Throated Wind that follows.

Edit 2 - awesome closing jam of Not Fade Away >Going down the Road>Hey Bo Diddley with Dickey, Berry, and Jaimoe.

    Ha! Great minds…

It’s like that bumper sticker: who are the Grateful Dead and why do they keep following me?

7/15/89: decent one/two opener, though it appears Bobs having tech issues. Blues, nice PEGGY O, but Jer?, something seems not…quite in snap..? Micro synapses not syncing? Not bad, but…Hard to describe, just Queen J for instance he’s just…not..quite…usually owns these songs? Maybe I’m reading into too much? Whatevs?
That’s how part of this show seemed: good show, but perhaps not quite summer 89 good?
BIRD SONG they do a great job of nice unhurried swelling as a band in sync, smooth, not forcing it.
    Subtle but very nice.
JG comes out second with Foolish Heart but again, ok, but…maybe trying too hard, holding the stick too tight?
    Same with Victim, ok but….
Then Crazy Fingers it’s like Jer steps it up and they start to really, then…ooopps, then yeah…but by Truckin it’s like they know they have to catch up and from Smokestack onward the show rocks! Cool Drumz/space with Close Encounters tease, sweet China Doll, definitely felt like Jer was trying to make up for things, and to prove it he throws in a sweet Stella after a smoking Watchtower in the middle! Big R&R mags closer, and JG throws down again with a Brokedown, though not flawless, it’s a nice finish. Interesting show. Not quite sure overall how I feel about it? I can see why it has maybe been passed over? Good but again, perhaps a step back from some of its lofty neighbors?
Of course still have Alpines and that cool Foxboro show, not to mention the Cali shows, and several fall tour nuggets, all just sitting there in multitrack glory…?

Ok BC, trying this 7/16/72 but so far the tape is so so aud…
Holy crap Weirs killing it on this Playing jam!

So, funny. While grooving on tunes today I per chance was perusing that After All Is Said And Done book, and don’t cha know there on page 173 in the minutes from band meeting on 7/11/84 are several very interesting things. Among other things, First, was how ole Betty was suing both GDP for $25,800, and Brent specifically for $45,000, not insignificant for the times.
Says GDP does not owe her, but does not mention about Brent. Guessing having to do with Brent’s solo album that they had been working on. Hell I probably knew what and have forgotten : (
Also, item 12 discusses approval for additional lighting/projector for “Friday 13 July—Dark Star, second set”
    Berry interesting…
I need to check this book out more. It’s been sitting here in my Xmass book pile and ive picked at it but it appears there’s more here than I first thought? Same with that Dylan Modern Song. Just been occasional picking at it, but great book non the less. Little bit on Truckin’ too.

Sure thing. And BTW, now Dave's reading your mind - final songs of 7/15/89 1st Set are on Tapers Section this week. Funny synchronicity how first Deer Creek show immediately before the last Alpine run. Passing of the beloved midwest summer venue torch.

JamoftheWeek is Dillon Stadium 7/16/72 starting with Trucking (no more spoilers). Mistakenly listed as Roosevelt Stadium, which is 7/18. Appears to be only one "circulating" copy/upload (sbd/aud composite from the comparative dark ages) of this great, relatively obscure, total big time show. First post E72 show on the East Coast, with members of the Allmans joining them for closing Set II jam (not on JOTW unfortunately.) Don't miss this one!

Today I’m going to pick 7/15/89. The show between. The one show I’ve not heard from this tour, and never heard anyone mention it?

Yeah, it’s quite the tale about the tapes journey back home where they belong!

Fun show for sure, nice representation of a solid ’84 show.
Whenever I hear a good ’84 show, I always think, hmm wonder what the rest of that tour was like.
I guess that’s the magic that kept the Dead on the road for so long.

Great Set 1 with real nice Bird Song, and like many have commented a top Jack Straw, best of the ‘80s? best after hiatus? However you want to quantify it, it get’s a lot of best talk.

The Shakedown > Samson got the 30 Days treatment in 2017.
A relative newly dusted off Smokestack Lightning with a real sweet jam after, short drums > space (is there a reel flip in here I’m missing, might have to research). Great post Drums set list Wheel > TOO > Black Peter > Lovelight. And last of 2 Revolutions for the year. First Black Peter into Lovelight? First of the infamous Amy Boards.

It was a nice return from my 1970 wormhole that I entered on 7/24 with the 9/20/70 show, went deep on that one, even ventured into the land of the PERRO session tapes, fun trip. Completely enjoyable and fascinating.

Nice Pick!

Well, I've heard it said there's something wrong in my head, now.

And the doctors can't seem to figure it out. Been on the shelf for a couple months with an odd malady - more or less constant dizzy, spacey feeling, which family and friends quickly pointed out seems par for the course for me (yeah, love you guys, too).

It feels kind of like I've had a couple of pretty strong mai tais. Not the worst feeling in the world, and I get the "buzz" without having to spend money on libations! Or a round trip ticket to Hawaii.

But, I've had to be horizontal a good bit of the time, can't really exercise, drive, etc. The best way to explain it is that I've been living inside of a 2 month long Dark Star>Seastones>Drums>Space>Feedback. With a Samba encore - Yikes!

Anyway, things have improved over the last several days, and I'm gradually returning to civilized society, although that seems to be slipping away lately out here on the west coast.

So, I'm only five dozen shows behind the rest of you. I should be able to catch up by the end of the weekend! And I nominate 9/19/2003 for a listen one of these days - a terrific post-GD show.

Cheers and good health to all.

Edit: Man, I really have been out of the loop for a bit. Neon Nikes - really??

Good to see you back in the mix Bolo. Man, good to hear things are getting better. A little Black Peter?

We will have to cut you some major slack on the past picks.

2003? You will have to help us out with that pick.

Or perhaps Mexicali Blues.

I think what Bolo was trying to say is Dave's Picks 36 is 04/16/78 Huntington Civic Center - Huntington, WV.

It was the Peggy-O reference that made me think of this show, and then when you see the first set ends in Scarlet>Fire. ..well, oh.. and get better Bolo from whatever ales you. Great to see you back, be good get or stay healthy.

Edit: Or it could be I am full of shit and think we are due for a '78. Either way, it's a win.

Bolo - it can be a bit restricting, having dizzy spells. I acquired them-with attendant feelings of nausea about 5 years ago. No one was quite sure why-possibilities included a reaction to prescription drugs, having low blood pressure and an imbalance in my ears. Nothing was decided, so I just carry on as I am. I find I am alright if I don't look down. So I don't.

And in regards to the west coast, You know the nearer your destination, The more you're slip slidin' away.

Hot tip on the 9/19/03 show... anybody got the SBD of this one out there?

It looks like that whole Dead tour was released on some limited edition Summer Getaway CDs, so I thought'd I'd check.

I've never listened to the Joan Osborne stuff, this show is sounding pretty dope and so naturally.. the SBD came to mind :) Some things never change in regard to collecting music.

Dug the 1983 yesterday and looks like some early 1973 for today, don't mind if I do.
Shipping notice received over here.
The Beach Boys mighta said and we'll have fun fun fun...

I'm afraid today's website glitches were probably my fault. As part of a rather complex NDA with my "employer," I am required to give them advance notice before I post on any website. In my compromised state of mind, I forgot to do so. I'd explain, but it's complicated. And dangerous.

In the unlikely event that anyone did a screen capture of my previous post, I strongly urge you to reboot your computer, change the locks on your door and stay away from the windows.

Also, I have the SBD of 9/19/2003 (WAV format) if you need it. Not sure how I would send that digitally - pretty big file.

Thanks for joining me on these one Jim, GOGD, Vguy and hopefully the rest of you. Gollum, you should be a fan of this show. Oroborous, I know you love this one.

This release really changed my view of releases. This is by far the most played Dave's Picks for me. Not saying it is the best ever, just the most played. Sound quality is A++. There are zero flaws in the entire release.
The Deal just kills it, so far my favorite China-Rider. The transition is unreal and I have not heard anything come close. Of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Box of Rain! So many highlights. Love the HCS. Why did they retire this song and when did they retire it? Love the WRS prelude into eyes. Did that ever happen again? And such a great finish.

Yes, Jim, I sure hope we get more 73. Dave's 16 is killer, Scooby Doo, and Dave's 32 at the Spectrum is so good. Love the variety. That He's Gone, Truckin, into the Jam- Dark Star into Sing me back home is super special!

So let's hope they have more 73 in the Vault. So many good shows.

Be well and let me know where we are going next.

No shipping notice here in MN, but that is

Yes, I surely do love 4/2/73 Deadvikes. I'm trying to keep up with the daily picks but have been dragging ass a bit this week. I'm still knee deep in Sunday's pick 2/11/70! I always avoided 2/11 because of the special guests. I guess I'm wary of outsiders. That's silly, of course, and it's just a great show. The whole Star-Spanish-Lovelight jam is sweet and meaty like a butt steak.

The three Spring 73 Dave's Picks are among my very favorites, too! I'd love it if we got some more 73 DaP's- maybe 8/1/73 or 9/11/73? I think those Dark Stars might be underrated because of sound quality (I dunno?).

I'm enjoying y'alls comments. Some day I'll catch up with you guys...

Sure do Love Spring '73

4/2/73 is solid top to bottom without a doubt. Really like when Phil still sung on Half-Step, even (especially?) when his voice is cracking (12/19/73 comes to mind as the standard to measure against), just ain't the same without that little bit of wonderful. Great great stuff here people. No complaints at all. Wave That Flag stuck out as it had me bobbin' along. And the Jam in Eyes that Jerry gets into at 14 minutes is the stuff I keep coming back for again and again and again.

No secret that PITB is an absolute favorite, possibly my #1 favorite, but def in the top 5. This one is great per usual.
But I had a flash yesterday on it's life cycle.

So you know how Dark Star had it's most epic versions from 1969-1970, IMO of course, I mean it's always great, but 1969-1970 those Stars are just universes of greatness, peak versions shall we say. It stays in the rotation, and is played great, but they're not 1969-1970 Stars. I'd say this is when Jerome was most excited about it, which makes all the difference to me.

Playing In The Band seems to have a similar life cycle in that regard and it's peak is arguably 1972-1973, again it stays in the rotation, and is played great, but they're not 1972-73 Playings (sp?). Anyhooo.. just wanted to say that cause that's what I was thinking about as I drifted through yet another magnificent PITB from '73.

Plus the coffee's kicking in and I don't really want to do the other stuff I should do today, so yeah I'm procrastinating.

And if you made it this far, congrats! You are a trouper.

That 2003 The Dead stuff was ringing my bell yesterday, those set lists had me at Born Cross-Eyed, another top 5 song for me.

What's on the haps for today?

PS - I probably wouldn't click on the RAW RAGE link below, that sounds a bit sketchy..
Spammers does anybody really go for that?

Interesting that people gravitate towards 4-2-73. I think the three Dave's picks from spring '73 are a really nice triad. Between them you have pretty much everything they were playing at the time.

You've got 3-28-73, Dave's Picks 16, affectionately known around these parts as Scooby Doo House. Recorded by Kidd, opening with a Cumberland -> Here Comes Sunshine, all the expected 1st set goodies, and a 43-minute Dark Star into Eyes deep in the second set. This recording doesn't sound as warm to me as Dave's Picks 21 - 4-2-73 at the Garden.

On this one Rex Jackson gets the credit for recording. Which is interesting since she and Betty were more or less a team during this period weren't they? maybe this accounts for the slightly warmer sound, which is generally attributed to Betty's recordings. This show has a great 1st set China-Rider and a fantastic 17 minute Playing in the Band to close out the 1st set. Set two has a nice slinky Mississippi, and the aforementioned Sunshine -> Jam -> Bobby McGee is unique as far as i know. The jam is a little dissonant for my tastes but no biggie. I believe this is the Eyes where garcia sings "There follows his wagon behind him thats loaded with kale".

Then comes my favorite of the bunch, Dave's 32. Both Rex and Kidd get the recording credit on this one, and it seems to me to fit right in between the previous two shows sonically. most of the 1st set is typical, but still very well played and the set has a great flow to it. I really dig the chorus like effect that Bobby was using on this tour - notably on Looks Like Rain. This show just seems to go on and on and the 3rd disc is special: He's Gone -> into a nearly 40 minute Truckin-> Dark Star (sans vocals) and then a Sing Me Back Home.

Just a fantastic show. The only thing this triptych is missing is a big Other One, which hopefully we'l lget soon in another Spring '73 release. This is my absolute favorite time for the band. Pig is gone, but i think that freed them up in a sense, and you can hear it in the playing, which is adventurous. And they have a ton of new material to learn and hone. I get it that some of the 1st sets are repetitive, but I usually just hone in on Bobby or Phil, who are always playing something unexpected. Bring on more '73. I'd love some more fall shows too, which might be a bit more complicated to release becasue of the guest horn players.

Well put slow dog. They are all great shows.. 4/2 has a little pixie dust mixed in with the mix, so it probably gets a little extra hype for that.

With the number of unreleased '74 shows just beginning to thin out.. 73 is going to come into the foreground eventually. I bet we get a good dose of 73 over the next year.. year and a half.

Anyone get Philly yet?

8/1/73 sounds good to me.

What a guy, Hey Garcia!

Man these folks at Dead.net, JerryGarcia.com, etc... have been busy during this pandemic, can barely keep up and that's all I'm doing. Totally Hardcore.

Releases, Shakedown Streams, Studio Outtakes, Dead Casts, Birthday Parties, Holy Shit!
I'm impressed.

Enjoy the Day you all, looking forward to some epic Dark Star action.

Let's keep the train rolling along.
I am going to check out 11/28/80 from the 30 Trips release. Sending out the 1980 vibe in the dimming hopes of a 1980 box.

Loved the 3/14/90 revisit. Always have room for a Spring 1990 release. Black Peter!

Be well folks and everybody hang loose.

Ha.. listened to this 2 or 3 days ago (the day we did Worcester '83), so it should count.. ??.

Great little show.

Jim, funny, for sure it counts. And it is a short show, finished it off before lunch. Really laid back show. Only 18 songs. Really like the Passenger, Deep Elem, LLR is good and the Deal is hot. To Lay Me Down is excellent, very well played and the Terrapin into Drums is well played. Black Peter! Sugar Mag US Blues closer.

Well, this fall is the 40th anniversary, and we did get Warfield Acoustic last year which caused a lot of speculation about a Fall ‘80 Box.

Sign me up!

Conekid, yes, that has always been the hope for me after they started releasing the big box sets like E72, and the two Spring 1990 box sets, I thought it was only a matter of time. Here we are the 40th anniversary!

I know Glasser did not work on the June 76 Box, so I am hoping he was busy on something else??

And I have heard all the rumors, the tapes don't exist, they recorded over them after they released Dead Set and Reckoning, or For the Faithful. I think I still have my For the Faithful LP.
Anyway, I don't think that is true. Three reasons. They rereleased Dead Ahead with new bonus songs in the 2000s and expanded Dead Set and Reckoning in 2004 or 2007, can't remember the exact year, with all new bonus material from the run. So, there has to be something there.

Somebody knows around here.

I have had him pretty occupied doing roofing repairs on my house. But it's going to rain the next several days, so he should be back in the studio cranking out 1980 gems as far as I'm concerned!

It does seem odd, the 1980 dilemma. I guess it's mostly true, but man.. they didn't even keep the single reel masters? Something must left worth releasing in the tool shed.

That appeared out of nowhere, so hopefully some SBD reels were in the ABCD stash.

Yeah, the reels weren’t in the vault because they were in the storage shed.
Fingers crossed.....

Conekid, that would be cool. From the lists I have read, I am not sure they received anything more the acoustic sets from October 9 and 10.
Jim, you mention I guess it is mostly true. Can you elaborate on that?

Who has a pick for today?

Hi-Ya, chiming in on the 1980 stuff, in 2012 DL said the following:

“Recorded every show from Warfield & Radio City Music Hall to Multitrack. Unfortunately a lot of that was erased in the early 80s. Nonetheless there’s material there.”

A number of the Acoustic sets were part of the Betty Boards that were returned, I'm assuming those were two-track mixes though and not multi-track.

Not sure if there's any info about the wiping of the original tapes. If anybody has info on that story let me know.

In other news, looks like new DaP V35 might be arriving soon... fingers x'd.

And lastly 5/29 & 5/30/71 look kinda cool...

Those were general comments.. I have no facts to back them up. I just can't believe this there is nothing left on the shelves from those tours.

Lemieux.. if you listening, check in that unlabeled banana box in the back of the room with the Blues for Allah painting. We think you missed some reels.

Sounds like a winner to me. Cal Expo.

I am in the camp of hope for 1980. Time will tell.
Thanks for the information guys, this is better than the alternative.

GOGD, did you have a link for Dave's comments?

To bad they erased those tapes, I'm happy to hear that some survived. I'm. happy they released the 10/9/80 and 10/10/80 acoustic sets, I was at both those shows , so that might mean they still have the electric sets for those shows. Both those shows were killer shows, electric and acoustic , so hopefully the electric sets will we the light of day and be.released.

BTK: Yeah, so I think based on Dave's comments that some of the multi-track stuff still exists, some of it got wiped. And then there's also Betty's 2 Track mixes that exist, I think those are mostly acoustic sets, at least based on what circulates.
I'm tempted to go through both runs and gather my notes on what SBDs are in circulation and which aren't, but I'm thinking that's a pretty good representation of what exists and what doesn't in the vault.

DeadVikes: Yeah, here's a link to Dave talking about this on January 17th 2012 @ 33:48ish - http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/19834305

It's a good watch and pretty informative. I stumbled on it looking into the 1970 tapes in the Vault, and it did answer my question on that as well.

Unfortunately, he states that there are virtually no shows in the Vault from July 16 through December 1970, largely because of Owsley getting busted. I guess the Dead themselves were not running tape at all during this time. Might be old news for some, but I wanted to confirm it with my own ears.

Clever Deadhead and Photographer Bob Minkin also gave us a clue to this on Page 221 of his book Live Dead with a picture of the 1970 reels in the Vault, in the picture there's a huge gap of reels between 7/16/70 - 12/27/70 :(

Dang it.

The above totally coincides with the tapes that circulate, mostly what exists in circulation from that time frame are either Fillmore East Crew SBDs (partials), FM Broadcasts, or Audience recordings.

So, mystery solved? I'd still like a nice list of what's there and not, but yeah that might be my OCD.

Since we're all getting older here, I think some time should be put towards figuring out what else exists from the Festival Express and to try and get that stuff and get it out there. I know there's more of that than what circulates.

Unfortunately, I don't see any 1970 acoustic set stuff happening for American Beauty 50th, because it doesn't sound like it exists. Happy to be wrong.

Alright, well there you have it, and that's the way it is Tuesday August 4, Two Thousand and Twenty, I'll be away on assignment and Dan Rather will be sitting in here for the next few years.
