Alpine '88 etc

DV - JeffSmith's post below will get you to my old scribblings, take a closer look.

I camped both '87 and '88. Minimal gear. Lawn tickets '80, '82, '85. Had mail order pavilion tickets '87 but seats for first 2 nights were worthless, way down low and literally on the outside, no sight line, poor sound, so we were up on the lawn, which was just perfectly fine. Never knew anybody who drew any of the true front of stage seats. Seats I had last night '88 were best by far, aisle slightly to outside of Jerry side 5 or 6 rows up.

There are relatively new ultramix uploads for Alpine '88. Healy was definitely f*cking with the sound every night at Alpine, panning the board feed from side to side, wasn't just 6/23. sbds still conspicuously missing for Met, Buckeye, and Pittsburgh from what I see on relisten. Like I said, really enjoyed going back to 6/20 for what was essentially the first time in all these years.

I’ll have to check if I have the newest versions of those shows, if not I’ll get them.

My only time to Alpine was my second show, 7-17-89. Was on the lawn. Very cool place. Camped at Bong.

Tinley Park the next year wasn’t as cool. And instead of clogging up a two-lane road in a small town the Deadheads brought I-80 to a complete stop the first day (don’t know about the following days because we came in the back way those days). The small parking lots of Tinley Park filled up early and since the venue was close to the highway people double parked on each side of the highway and walked to the venue. I know someone who did it and he said his car was still there after the show, didn’t get towed. We were on an overpass looking down at the mayhem on the highway. We got to the venue and a cop told us to pull onto the side of the road and park there.
We camped at Kankakee State Park and drove up I-55, then came in the back way. And came early so we could get in the lot before it filled up.

Made it to all 9 Soldier Field shows, on the floor for 7, with rows 13 and 25 the closest, both Jerry side.
I liked Soldier Field because it could absorb the masses, that parking lot was huge, with a big Shakedown Street.
Was back in 2015 for all 3 FTW shows and that place had really changed. The parking lot was gone and a space ship had landed on top of the coliseum.

Hey Bluecrow, in fours years of going to see the Dead at Alpine 86-89, I never made it into the Pavilion. We were always in the lawn, which was still a great unbelievable time. Yes. OB, the scene definitely changed after In the Dark, and the fact we could stay on the grounds the whole time. Love Wisconsin. As other spots across the country it was huge party scene.

Yes, the heat was something else. And the shows were so much fun. A true experience. Where did you stay Bluecrow?

Where can we find your write up from Gans BC?

I think there are some newer transfers of these shows from Miller via Pearson.

I will have to check these out at some point.

Oh and enjoyed the 3/30/88 OB, recording was good, always enjoy a Hey Pocky Way, West LA Fadeaway, Big Railroad Blues, Nice second set, from the Shakedown opener to the BMR. Great show. Thanks.

Alpine '88 cont.

I streamed rest of 6/20 - really really enjoyed it. Big fat old Terrapin > Drumz > Other One at the heart of it. The Other One probably bent a few brains, including mine, back then.

Yes Oro, it was miserably hot and I didn't manage heat well back then (that came when I moved out to the southwest.) Buckeye more of the same. I think Maine was a huge relief for the band and any heads that did the full tour. 7/2 probably show of the tour except for the things that made 6/23 special.

6/23 needs to be understood in context of 6/22 and all that heat. "A gift lost will be recovered." I wrote up my recollections and Gans posted it as part of a gdHour years ago. I'll see if I can find it. Blackbird>Brokedown was a truly remarkable musical gift to cap that night and that run. Totally off the cuff move. It was a thank you from the band and a blessing. Not so much bragging rights but just the feeling of how lucky we were to be there.

Alpine '89 was what it was musically because of Alpine '88.

There were shows,

Like this lil nugget (3/30/88)!
Really enjoyed this. Great opening trifecta, couple different era songs for variety, nice Cassidy. We get a Shakedown, fun inverted Uncle J/PITD/Uncle J, and a nice post drums sequence to ramp up the vibe!
Love to check out these shows that fall between/around official ones!

Enjoyed it so much I hit 4/3/88 for extra credit. Jers starting to get the dreaded spring north east tour bronchitis, but not the whole show? Next night I recall he sounds worse? Decent show, but I dug 3/30 more.

So then I through on Dicks 30 while doing some chores, but didn’t get to the second set, though I did catch the fun BD bonus stuff from 3/25. So not a DHB but a grateful day none the less!

Summer 88, sighhhh.
Was all stoked, armed and ready for the last six of tour, until I broke my ankle…
87 Alpine was such a hot shit show as it’s rep had blown up and like all good places it seemed to get too big? So we figured Maine would be the laid back alternative to freak freely and it surely was! When we got to Buckeye the general consensus was that besides the Blackbird bragging rights, folks were writing the whole scene off as miserably hot, too many people, and the band didn’t play that great overall?
I don’t know, I wasn’t their, that’s just the vibe we were getting.
I do know that Buckeye seemed like more of the same though I thought they played decent. Over tge years I’ve really come to enjoy this show, the first set with early Bruce encounters etc, and the three new songs to open the second was cool. But being at that venue in those conditions on crutches and still pretty sore even with enough analgesics for a platoon, it was a ruff day. Pittsburg was a god send comparatively, with no adventures through the countryside and seats to keep off the leg. Don’t recall much of that one cept maybe a good Cumberland and the first of only 2 Start your Engines, which we liked.
We’ll long/short I’d had an unfortunate incident involving ambulance and hospital before the tour started that time has led me to believe was related to excessive acetaminophen in the analgesics? So had to skip Toga, gulp, yep, that one still really hurts, but had to go back to hospital for upper GI and testing. One of the few shows I had a ticket fir but had to get rid of : (
Crotchfester was a good show, and nice flat soft baseball lawn which combined with a week or so of healing made things more fun and less hassle. Another very crowded show and a really muggy day.
So when we got to Maine the night before and it snowed it was quite the change lol.
Maine was a blast all the way around. Things came together and a good time was had by all, though the long slog home on the fourth after all those shows etc was ruff and rememberer it felt weird not seeing then on the fourth.

So since I’ve never heard any of the 88 Alpines (that I remember), figure I’ll fire up 6/23/88 in BC and DVs honor!

PS: yeah BC those Hampton shows truly were mind blowing. 3/27/88 is definitely one of the best shows I was fortunate to be at, though 3/26 was the only show I went to that I didn’t get in…

Alpine '88

Yep, I was there too DV. So I have a fair amount of memories about these shows. Some of its already out there. One of the most powerful Dead concert moments was the Morning Dew last night of the run (6/23). that, and the Believe it or Not earlier in the set. But some aspects of this run were a struggle. Damn was it hot. did Buckeye and Pittsburgh afterwards. my last Midwest shows until 7/8 and 7/9/95 at Soldier Field.

Without a doubt one weird thing going back to the tapes is that Healy seemingly recorded the entire run with strong panning across the sound stage. I have never heard anything like it on any other SBD. Question came up on the GD Hour many years ago regarding the panning on the SBD source for 6/23. At the time I had never gone back to listen to the other nights, but 6/23 tape I knew very well. I replied that I thought maybe the panning was a one-off and gave the context. But no, It's there 1st night 6/19. and it's on the Jam of the Week first set 6/20. "Sort of" cool in some ways and sort of a big WTF was going on with that guy. Just odd stuff. Truly.

I had 2 mail order pavilion seats each night. sold the other to a friend who in the end only made the last night. 6/20 was near soundboard to left. Great sound. "kids" next to me proceeded to stub in 20+ of their friends on what were like 4 seats worth of tickets - completely freaking rude, asinine, and ridiculous - literally forcing myself and others out of our legit seats as more and more of them got ticketed in. I was already overheated by Day 2 and not very tolerant of that thoughtlessness. sort of still pisses me off, though I write that with something of a dream time memory smile on a beautiful rainy morning here in the high desert some 30+ years later. at set break I was wandering the lawn and ran into some other folks i knew from OH (school/home at the time) and when Set II rolled in I was like F*** the pavilion I'm hanging up here, and we danced our asses off upper hill right end. It was great. Super fun. Remember an awesome Terrapin. I'm not sure if I have ever heard 6/20 since, maybe once. listened to JOTW 1st set last night and now again listening this morning. It's a great 1st set. I'm like, Box of Rain song 2??!! Band is on. Guessing Dave will feed us the whole show JOTW but probably will stream the whole show today.

Will have to check out 3/30/88. Was at Hampton right before this and that was some mind blowing music.

Interesting Dave had the Alpine 88 shows as well as the 88 Met Center show in the Tapers compendium. To be honest, I don't look at that to much.

I was at these shows as a wild eyed 17 year old. Great times. The Alpine shows were 4 shows in five days in the hot sun. We had a crazy drought that summer. Our crew rented RVs for those shows and we were able to camp at Alpine. Crazy times.
I am hoping someday we get the Alpine box set 87-89, would be a fun ride.

Speaking Of 1988

New in Jam-o-Week: 6-20-88 Alpine Valley.
Most days I only have time for a taste so Jam and Taper's fit the bill.
Already curated by Dave so you know it will have something tasty.
So often it gets me to try eras and tours I'm not as familiar with like last week's two from 6-11-92 (Jam) and 6-12-92 (Taper's) from Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, NY. Both very tasty which I rarely expect from the later era. It all just depends on whether they're ON that night no matter what era. Like this week's Taper's 6-17-88 selection from Bloomington, MN was NOT ON. Didn't help that I didn't care for the setlist. But I always learn something so thanks Dave L. and POTDWD crew.

Finding The Groove

Ah Veneta!

Hadn't listened to it in awhile and hadn't watched it in a long time.

Once again it took me to far out places, future & past. You just can't beat that!

Wonderful & highly recommended review in Taper's Compendium by John Dwork, who's much more adept at describing the nuance and the magic within the music for anyone whose interested in prolonging the trip.

I will say this, and I'm not sure how many other bands you can say this about.
But in regards to the Grateful Dead:
Man, those guys sure knew how to play on Acid!

Big props to Strider on getting that little presentation off the ground, I enjoyed it immensely!
(BTW Get Dwork involved on the 50th;)

8/28/82 Oregon Field Trip

38 years ago today I was at Veneta, Oregon for the field trip. I was pretty beat after driving all night, we stopped and picked up some beer in the morning before heading in. Cool place, fun show, musically, I think the shows at Ventura 7/82 and Frost 10/82 were better shows, but going up to Oregon was a trip.

Amazing how much can change in ten years. I like the video that was made in/of the audience at Veneta Dead 82. Completely different feeling at this Dead show compared to 1972 Veneta. I’ll have to listen to 82 today. And or watch the video on YouTube.
Last night was a hoot. Ken Babbs is a living legend.

I still need to do a deep dive into the recent Anthem re-release. Did we do Winterland 10/22/67 (Anthem bonus) as a pick yet? I just listened to the Cold Rain& Snow. It's a thrilling 3 minutes! I always preferred Aoxomoxoa to Anthem, but Jim sez Anthem is a favorite, hmmm. Queueing up.....

What a great show, this one definately is a show to play over and over again, not just a once over like some shows. What a cool time, the Dead were still living down in the Haight at 710 . Mickey Hart adds a lot to the band. Hopefully, there is some more 1967 -68 in the vault to be released.

Indeed, what a cool time Billy. I didn't realize they were living at 710 then. The Dead commuting to local Frisco gigs from their 710 crash pad! The mind reels.

I'm really digging Pig's organ on this. So, this is only Pig playing organ? Wow! I guess I tend to associate TC with the best primal Dead organ sound, but Pig is just wailing here! For someone who hated psychedelics, he sure had a feel for psychedelic music. I thought the primal Dead sound was forged in the acid tests, where everyone dosed. But Pig never dosed, even at the acid tests, right? How did he have such a perfect feel for this music? Too many questions for tonight, Gollum. time for some zzzz's.

Charlie Parker would have been a 100 today. Happy Birthday Be-bop Jazz master. Miles Davis was in the Charlie Parker Be-bop Quintet from 1944 to 1948. Also check out Jack Kerouac and Steve Allen performing “Charlie Parker”. Very beautiful

Pig Dose

Inevitably, pig did get dosed a few times, but supposedly he was none too happy about it.
So that and osmosis, how could he not inherit that psychedelic style.
Like coming out of a show feeling like your dosed when you know you didn’t...89 Hampton was like that.
Can you imagine being immersed in a small neighborhood swelling with the sights and sounds of the culture, while the radio played some weird pop echo of it from afar of what was happening right there around you?
I don’t think the Bacon gets enough love for his groovy organ playing.

Charlie Parker and 1967 Dead

Yes....I kicked the day off with some of his early recordings with Dizzy Gillespie. Superb book on Charlie Parker by Stanley Crouch, called, appropriately enough, "Kansas City Lightning."

It always seemed to me that the Dead only really became The Dead after Mickey Hart joined. Much as I love and still listen to what I have from 1966 and the first 9 months of 1967, they were still, to my ears The Warlocks at this stage. They seemed to explode into colour once Mickey Hart joined.

Finished 10/22/67 so moved to 1/24-26/69 Avalon

A Saturday rarity

Rare Cuts & Oddities

I like where this conversation is going.
Pigpen definitely wails in '66-'67.
He's way up front in the mix, prob since he was DI'd into the PA, so you get the loud Vocals & Keyboards on these tapes, but yeah it's some heavy stuff to hear him just laying it down.

The Pranksters and the Dead were pioneering the sound machines. Was just reading about the Pranksters going to see the Beatles and freaking out. Funny stuff.

Was listening to 10/22/67 yesterday along with some '66 stuff and Pig is just shredding it up.
Gonna take on some 1966 Rare Cuts & Odds today.

Garage Dead!

Pigpen seems to me to have arrived fully formed at the start of the Dead. Whereas the others were all at various stages of development, and continued to progress at a frightening rate, he was as is, and ever would be, right from the start.

Aoxomoxoa bonus- Avalon 1/24-26/69

I like your idea of moving on to this BobT. I've neglected it also. I started it yesterday but got stuck. I had to listen to the New Potato 3 times. There's so many great Potatoes but this surely is among the best. You get the feeling it must have been one of Phil's favorite tunes to play at the time. He really digs in! Added Avalon to my Sunday line-up, but maybe someone has another pick for today, too?

Two close listens to 10/22/67 was just what the doctor ordered.. They whole thing is amazing, Embryonic Dead. Funny, I just got back from an amazing road ride on my bike and it finished with New Potato Caboose blaring in my ears and I check in to see potato banter here. Nice.

I'm all in with AoxomoxoA Bonus Material. Like Bob T, Gollum (and others), I did not give these guys the proper fanfare when they arrived, not sure why....

I hear Jorge was at both these shows. I can't wait for one of his great posts documenting the events....

I agree, I think the original mixes are way better, hands down. I came home from a Dead show up in Oakland back in 1979, I put on Anthem of the Sun with headphones and I could hear the color purple, it was very cool. I also heard that the tapes with the original mix of Aoxomoxoa were lost for awhile, I'm glad they found them.

edit. I recognize that date. 6.8.69 holds a special place in my heart. That was the night my dad was killed when he was t-boned by a cop responding to a call, flying down the street at 80 mph with his lights off. No suffering. I was a year old, so I have no memories of him except pictures. Mom remarried in 1972 and my step-dad was the best dad ever. Don't feel sad for me. I almost didn't add this edit, but I'm among friends here. I've avoided listening to this show for forever because I know at some point during this show is when it happened. But, at some point, one needs to stare down the demons and move on. Onward!! I will meet Forrest one day, and give him the biggest hug ever.

If I'm not mistaken this is possibly the Notorious LSD Overdose show that is referred to throughout GD history.
If not this night, than this run of shows.
Goldfinger & Owsley both spiked the Apple Juice unbeknownst to the other.
People got clobbered with huge doses.
Robert Hunter was a casualty.
Jerry tells a great story about it on Jerry on Jerry.

They discussed this recently on the Deadcast and I guess Hunter wrote Black Peter after this, which was news to me and puts new light on that classic tune.

Admittedly I love geeking out and getting new info on these old myths and legends.

Observation of anniversary shows Red Rocks

Well today and tomorrow, August 30 & 31, 1978 Red Rocks... 5 new song intro's, (Miracle, Stagger Lee, World to Give, Heart of Me, and Shakedown Street).... I haven't listened to either for ever, and about a 1000th less than the prior two shows, which were also at Red Rocks, July 7th and 8th.... Not recommending them for pick of the day, but has anyone spent much time visiting these two.... Going to give a listen tonight and tomorrow... Thanks Bob t

I’m on it BobT.
Set2 on CD-R that I burned more than 10 years ago. It’s labeled ‘slight hiss’.
I assume that I have both nights on a HD, but my computer is not turned on to check.
I had a hissy Set2 on cassette in the 90’s, but the sound quality was better on my copies of the July shows, so I usually went with those.

Crazy story Vguy, that’s great that you had a good step dad.
Maybe some future year on June 8 the Vguy Knights will win the cup,
(just not against the Red Wings).

Status report on 8/30/78 Red Rocks

Listened last night to Charlie Miller Audience tape, only audience available for this show, sort of reminds you of the first week of July 78 shows pre-box release. Second set is more enjoyable than the first, good Estimated>Other One>Eyes sequence. My favorite was the Jam>World to Give>Aiko post drums.... Hey the first of a very limited (3) World to Gives, you can hear it coming during the whole jam or space.... First Miracle to open the second set has an interesting ending... Onward...... bob t

Well I took my own advice and listened to the New Potato from 6/8/69 Fillmore West Bonus, it's dope!
Phil's bass solo on this one will take you places.
If they were tremendously dosed as I believe they said they were, it further proves what I suspected:
Man, those guys sure knew how to play on Acid!

Fillmore Potato 6/8/69

Yeah, that's right GOGD! They were just talking about this night on the recent podcast about "Black Peter"! What a co-inky that the Caboose led us to this show. I like this Potato. It's a little quieter in the middle than I expected which was nice. I need to improve my knowledge of New Potato and its development. I guess there is confusion about whether this is the Goldfinger show but from the sounds of it I think it could well be. Something just sounds a little squirrelly. It's fantastic though. The "He was a Friend of mine" is my new favorite version. I'm also a geek about the legends and myths around the Dead. Like Babbs said last week, everyone keeps adding on to and embellishing the myths, and maybe in 2000 years a Homer will write the truth. The idea of Jerry driving his car across the Golden Gate Bridge to rescue a demolished Hunter from the streets of San Francisco is a trip. I know I'll think of that the next time I visit that beautiful bridge.

This is just the type of Geeking out that can keep me from doing all the other things I should be doing.

And a new Fave Version to boot, can't beat that.
The 12/12/69 Thelma version has always been my "definitive" version of "Friend Of Mine" but that might just be nostalgia from my GD Hour days, I'd have to listen side by side to see if there's a rivalry.
But will keep that in mind for a future rainy day.

Yeah, I know that "they're" saying it was that run of shows at the Fillmore West when the Freak Outs happened. But I think there's confusion on the exact day / date. D Gans and Corry Arnold discuss this show and the Wayne Ceballos appearance at some length on one of the GD Hour Episodes. I'd need to listen to that again and look over the run to get a clearer idea, but again.. that'll probably happen some other day.

I sure wish I had one of them there Photographic type memory thingys.. mine is more of the leaky foggy forgetty type. It's as if each new piece of information writes over the other latest piece of information.
But it does make for continued entertainment and freshness ;)

And alas.. 2000 years, Babbs can we get a request in for a sooner Homer?

I like From the Heart of Me and France. mmm, not so sure about Sunrise. Let's not forget Rain, my favorite Donna song.

The Workingman's Deadcast was great, much better than I expected. They really put some good work into it. I'm hoping they'll do one for American Beauty, too.

I love that Thelma show and bonus disc. I spent a few days in Yosemite this summer and could not stop listening to Thelma. It's perfect music for the great outdoors.
