Grateful Dead

a lot of great shows in '87. Park City is one of those great shows. I saw Red Rocks, then Tempe, before heading back east. I think a lot of folks skipped Park City and went to Cali, as Park City really doesn't ever get mentioned in talk of that little western tour. What ever source for that tape was super sweet spot in terms of its energy, fullness, and sense of being right up front - in my "memory" best sounding '87 tape i had back in the day by a bit. I'd have to pull it out from the vault, set up a cassette player, for an A/B with uploaded sources. That part of the vault is sort of avalanched in right now, but still thinking its an FOB, possibly source 4 on relisten, but really don't know. listened to that yesterday(?) and now again, and its seems mighty fine.

Missed that one.. and I could have caught it, I was in the neighborhood (sort of). Caught red rocks and telluride though. Had a blast.. My sister got married that year so I had to head East, that could be what curtailed my adventure. I can't for the life of me think of why I would have missed that one. I'd love to see it get cleaned up, the board sounds better to me than Hartford does. ..but what do I know.

Hey everyone.... just finishing up listening to the last Winterland show from October 74. Has anyone ever heard why they played Half Step, after the first encore of Johnny B Goode.... They go right into We Bid You Goodnight right at the end of Half Step... Just curious. Seems random considering it could have been the "last" show... Overthinking in Rhode Island...

I really like this show and the sound quality is really good. I haven't listened to this complete show in a long time. This is pre HDCD. I think this show is better than the other 81 release, Dave's 20, December 81.
I haven't spent much time with 81 shows but I think I need to. I believe they performed close to 90 shows in 81 and you rarely hear people talk about 81.

Check it out if you haven't listened in a while, several highlights. He's Gone Caution Jam is sweet. Really like this Wharf Rat. Oh and the secret bonus tracks!

Much better than Dave's 20. Completely agree. 81 is a weird year, the recordings are so spotty. DiP 13 is a diamond in the rough that year and it's no wonder it was culled to be one of the early Dicks Picks. The European tours in particular just don't convey to great sounding concert recordings which is a shame because on a whole the two tours were hot.

Clearly Dave's #20 was picked more because it was a reel and not a cassette master, at least if you compare to all the other factors. There were hotter shows that year. It seems to be viewed by many as one of the weakest of the Dave's Picks series. DiP 13 on the other hand is hot.

81 was midway through the downward slide of the cassette mastered recordings. I know there are a lot of fans of the Ultra Mixes Dan was doing. It's great if you like them, I wish I was so patient.. but I miss the crisp sounding, high fidelity boards. We lost them for whatever reasons with Healy at the wheel. The 80's would be a different beast altogether if they were better recorded. My opinion, not to be confused with fact.

Lots of good 81 out there.
Try 3-9-81, that is a good sounding recording, and I love the Deep Elem.

Also, I assume that you are aware that there is video of 3-28-81, if not check it out on YouTube.

Jim makes a good point about audio quality, and I haven’t listened to those shows in a while so they may sound better in my memory than they do in your reality.

Just imagine where we would be today if the band had dumped Healy and kept Betty.......

1981 is totally worth checking out.

February Uptown shows are fun.
I might need to revisit March.
May is killer, the band is hot and the shows are hot. 5/6/81 is a good example of what you can find there.
Starting with the 4/25/81 acoustic Benefit sans Phil, every show rolling through 5/22/81 acoustic Benefit is in my opinion worth hearing / owning.
Then the July shows are real good too, especially 7/4.
Greek shows in September also deserve a nod.
2nd European tour of the year is hit or miss and the recordings def have issues like Jim was saying, but 10/16 is an all time Wowser.
And then December has some good stuff. In particular 12/3 and the NYE run with 12/26, 12/27 & 12/31 as stand outs.

I dig '81. And really had fun collecting that year as I wasn't that familiar with it prior to that.
There are a lot of those killer hidden gems of the 1980s in there.
So yeah, if you liked yesterday's pick, which I was digging, then dig in!

so funny thing is I only had Set II so this is first time for Set I. Didn't even know the set list. Nice to see the Big Boss Man opener - they broke that out 3rd night at Red Rocks.
not going to dig through the avalanche right now. listening to the Ultramatrix and that may have been my original source. it sounds real good to my ears, much better than others I've heard from earlier in the year. I had no clue back then that Healy was experimenting with those so I would have thought my source was a sweet FOB pull. I'll figure it out some day.

81, yaaasssss another fine overlooked year! Love 5/6, definitely better than Dave’s 20. Can also vouch for 3/13, 5/17, and 9/26 as I was there and Dave and XM have played these often over the years. Always thought 5/17 was a top show and better than 5/16 from boxilla. Remember having first sets from Indianapolis 12/5?, and St Louis, and a hot 2nd set from KC. Had more back in the day but don’t recall. Probably not great recordings etc so didn’t get the same love as the others?
IMO I don’t think Healy should of gotten fired, or at least not until he did. Perhaps sent off to rehab....
He didn’t get canned because he couldn’t mix, but because of his personal problems, differences of opinion and being insubordinate. I think the collaboration between he and the Ultra-Sound crew/equipment provided the greatest live reinforcement ever!
Also, some mixers are good at live versus studio etc. I’m sure Betty had good enough ears to mix live, but that doesn’t mean she could have as there’s more to it than that. And conversely, if Healy only did recordings using the same rig as Beatty, I’m sure he’d do fine.
I’ve never felt the GD or any of the after groups has ever sounded as good. I love Cutlers studio stuff but wasn’t a fan live. Too clean and not loud enough for my taste. By clean I mean in the sterile digital sense versus that nice tube or tape saturation. For example, listen to E72 when they were still mostly using only Fender power on the instruments. You can clearly hear the tube overdrive on occasion. To some folks it sounds more like R&R than the ultra clean sound that evolved. It’s one of those fine artistic lines, not unlike a great chef.

gonna toot the horn again on this one. finally heard Set I and on my 3rd spin or so through Set II in past several days - what a fun listen and fun show!! pretty sure my cassette was the Ultramatrix. who knew? it kicks ass. everything I remembered. though I didn't see this show, it really captures that great '87 summer vibe. FOB I listened to earlier was also excellent.
only '81 show I saw was 12/6 at Rosemont. Some solid moments including sweet Jack a Roe, China > Rider Set I closer, and a Set II To Lay Me Down. Just a few weeks earlier saw the Jerry Band at the final show at the Uptown - move to Rosemont sadly was end of an era. there were rumors that Dead were thinking of booking a final Uptown run but no. Oro mentioned 1st set from previous night in Indy. I haven't checked sources but the Set II from that night was smoking from what I heard at time - opens with a fat Shakedown and its freaking got a pre-drumz Big Railroad!!

Great show Bluecrow, Park City Utah! Yes, summer 87 was a blast. So many good memories.

And you have an 81 show in your bank. Pretty cool, would love to hear more about that.

Funny how often times BITD we'd have one Set or the other of a show and never have heard the other Set. (ie Had Set 2 of that show for years! I used to love the Set 1 Tape of that Show!)
Now, so much has changed in that regard. Makes me smile thinking about that.

BlueCrow finally got to check out Set 1? I really like that Set 1, it's got a real '87 GD feel to it and they sound pumped to be playing and like they're having fun.
(PS was just joshing about digging out the Vault, no need with the Archive, I don't even have a quality tape deck anymore, haven't for years)

And A Ho 1981! Keep those show stories coming. You all got me hankering to hear 12/5/81 and maybe revisit all of March '81 :)

12/5 is looking appealing today and it's been awhile S1 closes with Cumberland > El Paso, Ramble On, Passenger, Bird Song > Let It Grow! And that's after 4 songs already! Man.. what a band.
And yeah, the aforementioned BRRB in Set 2 along with Shakedown, PITB > D> S> Wheel> PITB sandwich.

12/5/81: cool, always wanted to check out this whole show. I know the 1st rocks so it will be good for working. JG was obviously diggin’ BRRB in those days. Believe that 5/17 one really rips...

C.C. RIDER: long time so my memory etc, but I seem to recall the dbl time shift was a thing for a while, but it almost sounds like they all weren’t ready for it here? research project for GOGD....when was the first and for how long etc

5/17: I told ya that one just rips! I was just starting to move outta the local circle cause there weren’t enough shows and I was old enough that the rents weren’t gonna try and stop me. I didn’t have a car yet so I decided to take the bus after doing so for Utica in March. So off I go to Syracuse and see if I could score a ticket and go. Remember it was a Beautiful Spring day, not necessarily the norm in upstate. So I get there and it’s the usual scene in those days, very laid back, no shakedowns yet per say. Just a small number of friendly freaks lounging round the ole Aud. Awesome day but nobody had tix....somehow I find out that they’ll sell whatever few remaining from promos, promoter etc. so I manage to get a good spot in line and end up with a ticket!
Not sure where it was located cause I went right for the floor and low and behold just as security is about to come question me, I see an empty seat third row, Garcia side about five people in, boom I slide in and start asking if anyone’s sitting there etc and acting like this is where I belong etc and security backed right off. As I said, things were often pretty loose in those days. So the show soon starts and straight away it’s apparent that JG is ready and ripping.
Now they were still using the big Clare Brothers PA boxes and for whatever reason they didn’t hang them so they were on the ground and thus me being being more to the side they were almost right in front of me. So being that close it was ridiculously loud and believe me in those days I knew loud and this was probably the loudest Dead show I saw. To add to it, JG was trying out the new at the time McIntosh MC 2500 power amp instead of the usual MC 2300. Probably grabbed a few from MAC in nearby Bingo town? So the combination of these factors with JG just ripping was awesome, but I had my first collage final exam the next day and my ears were ringing so bad I couldn’t hear a word the prof said lol. Later, when I got the show on tape it reinforced what a hot show this was and it’s always been my favorite 81 show.

9/26 I don’t recall as much. It was a posse of us up in the side seats about halfway back which was kinda of a weird bummer for me as up until that show I’d always been up front with like 10th row at 11/9/79 being the farthest back I’d been. So up in the seats in a more social setting I’d sorta taken this one for granted. Remember On the Road again, but not too much else music wise? Finally heard it in just the last few years since my cousin said Dave kept playing it etc, so checked it out and it’s another good show, though I still like 5/17 better.
3/13/81: This was the first time I took the bus and went to a show myself. Nasty cold drizzly upstate late winter day. Friday the 13th to boot!
Ran into my peeps from one of the bands I roadied for and though I had hardly any money they talk me into going for dinner since it was so shitty out. So I spend a bunch of money and eat too much, and then grab a bottle of Seagrams as 7/7 was the R&R drink of choice then, at least in the other main band I crewed for. Now I had a pretty good tolerance in those days, but was too green to know that most Deadheads don’t really drink like that, at least not before shows. So I’m stuck in line for hours basically drinking most of it myself, which would of probably been ok except for all the joints....
So the gate opens, which is at the other end from the stage and we run in and not through the normal entrance but run down this isle and try to jump the boards but being toasty, trip and fall several feet to the floor lol. Luckily bumbles bounce so I’m up and running and end up in front of JG. As I say all would of probably been good except now you have the often long wait for the show to start so we sit and start smoking non stop joints. Well like Fat Freddy says getting drunk and then getting high is like pissing in the wind! So of course the whole building starts spinning etc but there’s no way in hell im giving up my spot on the rail. Dumb yute that I was I probably could’ve gone to the rest room and they would of held my spot, but instead I end up standing, more like slumping on the fence and sorta pass out, until, ooopppsss, barfed over the rail onto that little area between the fence and the stage where photogs and security etc would hang. Well some of the folks next to me got uptight even though I followed the number one rule of parting: no shootin’ without a cooler....meaning if you have to, just make sure it’s in a appropriate place. Not on or near people, or in the car or whatnot. So that’s what I did, it wasn’t pretty, but no one got violated. The security guys were grumbling a little but they put some cardboard down and eventually everyone chilled out. So now I’m basically sleeping standing up with the fence holding me up. But the dudes next to me kept trying to get Security to remove me, which wasn’t going to happen lol. Funny thing they were all trippin and got too high and during the second set a couple of them had to be pulled over the fence and carried out. Ha! Rookies! Lol.
So I distinctly remember feeling/sensing, since I was out, the lights going down and of course then the big roar and just as i open my eyes JG comes round the corner of his gear and we lock eyes for a moment and he didn’t look much better than me, or so I thought? He had on a blue or black long sleeve work short with a big burn in the. pocket like he put a half lit J or something in there! Anyway, I used to think this show sucked but after finally hearing it, again because I heard Dave had been playing it, it was yet another nice surprise. So there ya go, those are my 81 stories, and a testimony to how awesome it is to be able to hear these shows all these years later.

The Saint Of Circumstance out of Space on 5/17/81 caught me off guard, I had to go back and make sure there wasn't a song missing. This is a great show, and further confirms my May '81 being killer theory.
Super cool you were there for this one. It's a total keeper.

Last night after the obligatory 10-21-78 anniversary listen I started 12-9-81 at China>Rider which wasn’t earth-shattering, then Scarlet>Fire in which the AUD patch went on way longer than I remembered, but then was totally rockin’ to Drums. I didn’t remember that portion even though I’ve listened to the release several times. That was smokin’ and I think one of the reasons Dave picked that show.

I have a lot of 81 shows on a HD that I haven’t listened to yet, but will hold off since, as I pointed out last weekend, the entire 1981 project folders arrived on etree last week. I’m going to grab those this weekend, then will check out some of the shows mentioned here, including the Senator Seagrams show.

Also need to listen to those 87 shows.

Winter’s coming (sorry DV, a little too early) and there’s no hockey until at least January, so I’ll have a lot of time to listen to shows I haven’t heard before.

The Met Center, former home of the MN North Stars. Saw the boys there in 88 and 89. Today, this is where the Mall of America sits.

Would love to go back in time to see the scene their in 1973, can't imagine.

They usually played at the St. Paul Civic Center in the 1970s, so this is interesting.

Black Throated Wind has some real cool Keith stuff going on. Brown Eyed Women was standing out to me too. And Set 2 is essentially a monster jam.
Pretty sure the Wang Dang Doodle is from the Soundcheck, off the top of my head the earliest version in circulation.
I'm with Bob T, this show gets overlooked by me, possibly due to the lack of PITB.
But I'm glad I checked it out today, Nice Pick!

Here's a little synchronicity for today's Dead pick:
I was looking at Anniversary shows on today's date in my collection.
So I typed in 10-23 and looked em over, something that stood out, was 10/23/93 Taper's Section track, when I look into it, it was a Rehearsal take of... wait for it... Wang Dang Doodle.
Pretty neat.

And... Dave's Picks 2021 V37 has been announced.
I think somebody here called that year.
I won't spoil it until you've had a chance to check it out.

Yes, that Wang Dang Doodle is not the encore. When I pulled it up on Relisten it had it as the last song, so I assumed it was the encore. No real vocals either, but I thought I could here Garcia singing a little.

Yes, seems like an early announcement for subscriptions, but that is okay. Should be another great year on the Dead front.

The video also references Norman is already working on the 2021 Box. Hope we don't have to wait until fall 2021....

And we know we aren't getting a second Box. I wish they would put some sort of release out during December. It would be fun.

Been a bit busy dvikes, thanks for checking in.. had one last project involving exterior trim I needed to get up before winter.. involved harnessing up and trancing upon a steep sloped metal roof (roped in of course) moving and installing heavy pieces of exterior PVC corner board. oh, and getting rid of the 100 year old rotten stuff first, which might have been the most unnerving part.

Plus.. it was 75 degrees and sunny all week, needless to say this means getting in one last short sleeve river run before all hell breaks loose and everything ices up. Had some fun with that one.. let's just say I had a little help enjoying the last of the terrific fall colors we had this year. It was an electric day.

So I am way behind. Honestly.. I just finished 10/19/73 Wednesday night. I must add.. being extremely mood enabled for that one helped, what a fantastic show and one of the favorite Dark Stars and arguably my favorite DS>MDews. Simply amazing and always one of my favorite all time releases.

So with cold rain (and temperatures that might bring) snow all week, time to transition to indoor life. This starts the gloomy part of the year where I live. Cold, windy, often raining, icing or snowing, but not good enough snow to ski or do anything meaningful outside. This is the time of the year that has that ice component that makes everything outdoors difficult.

I have to admit.. it feels good to put away my harness and rope and be done with exterior work and heights. For one.. I suck at it and man is it stressful. Measuring every step and carefully judging how much I can lean out and get some reach. In my youth I climbed a lot, but comfortably in middle age I lost height skills long ago and it's tremendously stressful leaning out over stuff measuring, hanging, screwing, painting and caulking. If I could have hired out the work I would have.

Time to relax and catch up.. which is exactly what I did this morning. Woke up hours before dawn, made some fantastic coffee, cleaned up a bit and headed outside to soak in the tub ease some tension and contemplate things.. now what to listen to? Something cerebral and reflective.. how about the complete second set of 5/26/72.. overdone, yes, a good bit of it was included on the original E72 which I bet most of us cut our teeth on decades ago. But there is something to the original uncut sequence that is satisfying. It's a masterpiece that really doesn't get the attention it deserves because of the plucked out sequences that appear on the album.

Interesting choice for #37. I am more drawn to the next night, but hey.. I'll take it.

Dug 10/23/73, after reading Jim's post I feel like I didn't give 10/19 the attention it deserved, but I think it was a Monday or something... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Shit I like 18 minute PITBs from 72. Think it's been awhile for me.
I'm hip with that. I fail to bring up E'72 as it felt like a few folks were taking the anniversary trip in May, but I didn't so that works for me.

The last night! Sounds like a winner to me and yes the version from the 2011 box far exceeds the original release. Having missed out on the box, this was the first stand alone show I picked up and I couldn't believe how good the sound quality was and of course the full uncut show. I think I am up to 9 individual shows now and of course I am getting close to the original box price. That is life. I have 4/11/ coming today. Picked that one up for $25.

Sounds like a big project Jim and you are doing it yourself, I am impressed.

The announcement of Dave's 37 is interesting. I think this is the first time they have lead off with a 78 show. This show is part of the returned reels from the ABCD transaction. Not surprised we are getting it. And now up to 25,000 copies which I believe is the limit due to their old contract with Arista.

Yes, I had early April 78 from the returned reels for a 2021 release. Didn't pick a specific show, however. Also thought we would see the Kezar 73 show. Who knows, maybe #38??
Someone pointed out that this show would not fit on 3 CDs, so not sure. I think 72 is also due this year, not sure when.

Agree dvikes. Keithfan used the term Kill Zone (69 through 74) though I would use 70-74, 77.

Interesting pick. Digesting it a bit, they have gotten a bit formulaic, the first two from the kill zone, the third the head scratcher and the fourth, pot luck. It's good to mix things up, I would never want to be called predictable.

EDIT: so what do y’all think for next box....I’d say 78 since there’s those ABCD Beatty’s and he’s obviously rooting around in that zone except for how poorly the 78 box sold? I’d say it’s fair odds...

Woah, don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like that at a dead show before. At first I though someone must of chucked a bottle or something. Can’t believe I’ve never read about this before?
WANG DANG: weird, not listed in either a Deadbase 10 or 50? Neither is OMSM? Sounds like a job for inspector Good Old....I’m wondering since they obviously don’t really know it if it was an off the cuff reaction to the fighting, I mean it is the perfect song for it lol.
Great show though, just your typical fall 73, yawn, NOT! Hadn’t heard this one before. Probably cause no DS? Do Love those Trucking/Nobody sequences though. Man what a great tour! Still haven’t gotten to 10/19, just haven’t had time for real sit down in the big boy chair, and that show requires nothing less!
Been enjoying the picks this week although only on iPad at job site. Tis why I’ve had to delay my fall 89 excursion...did listen to the three Philly shows a bunch on the pad, but didn’t get time for them on the big system until last night. After 10/23/73, and most of 10/18/89 on the pad at work, did 10/18&19/89 last night under proper conditions and yeah, still think Philly was a great run. More on that later. Have to make the best of probably the last nice day this year as it’s supposed to snow and drop from high sixties today to lows near zero by Monday, Booooo!
One thing I don’t like here, going from extremes with no acclimation time, it’s a horrible shock to the system!
So out to the garage it is. Perfect for 5/26/72 and then perhaps 10/20/89, with proper replay upstairs tonight.

What really sucked was that this show was advertised as "The Grateful Dead Performing 3 Sets". Casey Jones was the first song of Set 3. The fight was ugly - several security dudes beating on one guy who was dancing in the aisle right in front of the stage, even Bill K. jumped off the stage to help break things up and security started pounding on Bill, that's what Phil is so upset about. The melee ended soon after. By then, Jerry and Phil were both sitting on the stage floor - everyone seeming quite upset by this sudden change of weird energy and bad vibe. The band had several discussions - you could see that they were at serious odds about whether they should continue with the plan and do a third set. After all, the first two sets were well played, creative and joyful. When they finally tried to play Saturday Night, you could tell their hearts and minds were no longer into continuing this night. Too bad for all of us. Those security punks must have left their 'Minnesota Nice' at the door or when they donned their uniforms.

So Billy K jumped down into the melee, following in the footsteps of Marty Balin circa 1969. It sounds like Billy faired a little better and it was Security Guards instead of Pool Cue wielding Hell's Angels.

Fascinating. It makes you wonder what could have been during Set 3. I was under the assumption it was an encore, but shit.. that coulda been a Dark Star or something amazing.

Wang Dang Soundcheck started circulating online in mid 2008 when Charlie Miller posted his Transfer of SBD > Master Reel > Dat. Outside of an Official Release, it doesn't get any better than that.

Speaking of Official Releases (nice segue huh? I like transitions)... Man this 5/26/72 is sooooo goood.
Set 1 is essentially a Full Show.
And then... you get some of the greatest music they ever played.
Pigpen's organ fills during Europe '72 are the cherry on top, he's got the tastiest licks imho.
I've always liked his sense of when to lay back and when to add color.
Really enjoying this Truckin' boy howdy, I see what those folks in Turlock were excited about.

Thanks Oro.. this seems to indicate the series is more balanced than a lot of people seem to acknowledge.

As for box, call me crazy, but I am speculating 72 or 80. My logic on 1980 is pure speculation. If they had some hidden reels (and there's a part of me that thinks they must), the certainly would not tell us. Perhaps when they were seeing what if anything was releasable.. while rummaging around the found a couple shows to be released as spin-offs giving us 10/8 and 10/9. Which gives them time to go through the good stuff and plan out a box set a couple years later. 1972, do we need a reason? Thinking the Fox Theatre St. Louis or the rest of the BCT's (if they have them). 69 will always be a wild card. Ark Ark.

The piece of film that I have is the very beginning of OMSN. What I thought looked like a crew member doing a repair on stage is actually a camera man.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched the movie. Makes me really want the entire run to be released in a Box with audio and video.

Crazy stuff at the Met Center. Maybe that is why they didn't come back to that venue until the late 1980s.

1980 you say Jim?? I am in of course. Hard to know what they will do next year and of course when it will be released. If it is a fall release, it will be something like 18 months between box set releases. Too long for this guy. One thing is for sure, they keep us guessing.

Like Oroborous said, we have those great years that are lost in space! So true. 80,81 and I will add 79 to that list as well. I think there is some great shows in that year.

GOGD: as always thanks for the crack detective work. Quite a scene...I’ve heard Phil be Phil and heckle folks, but that was out right venom. “There is nothing like a GD concert” hee-hee. Can’t believe I’ve never heard about this one?

JIM: yes agree, according to the charts were over due for both Dave’s and a box for 1972, and were overdue for a 78 Dave’s, but obviously that’s changed. Still wonder about a early 78 box cause ya know those ABCD Beatty’s are getting released someway sometime, and he has been rooting in there. Guessing too close on the heals of the summer 78 box, but after the knuckle balls he’s chucked this year anything is possible, which is great!
Boy wouldn’t that be great if there was more quality stuff from fall 80, hell any 80 would be sweet, another black hole of underrepresentation! I’ve always felt like it doesn’t add up that ALL the tapes, especially quality multi-tracks could totally disappear? Sumthin don’t smell right? So hope your right! I know Deadvikes wouldn’t be the only one happy about that! Honestly, I think I’d rather have a cherry picked mid sized box than a comprehensive boxilla of all the shows. I know that’s sort of blasphemy, but practically speaking it might make sense...hopefully there’s somethin...

Phewwww, it’s crazy how fast you can fall behind, but dagnammit I started this tour and I’m gonna finish.
So anniversary schedule is out the window but that’s ok cause I’ve been marinating in these shows to try recapture some of that old school familiarity like back in the day when you’d only get a few tapes now and then so you’d play nothing but until you knew em inside out...so several plays on the pad only at work, but had some nice proper listens at home this weekend. Overall there a little chameleon like, much like most of this tour. One day something doesn’t sit right, but the next time time you listen your going, ohhhh. Most 89, but not quite spring 90 tight, including the midi, but then outta nowhere some weird hiccup, or ruff spot. Bob especially seems to have some “moments” on this tour, mostly small and/or subtle, he’s playing great and he's dialing in the raunch nicely (think it started going too far later in the 90s?) but somethings just a tad off now and again? Perhaps this is why he uses tapes and gives cudos to summer tour versus fall more often?
But it’s the kind of thing you wouldn’t really notice unless your doing the whole tour like this...and it’s kinda nit picking.

So, 10/18. Opens with the only Shakedown of the tour, and though HENDRIXFREAK and I won’t be goofing around about GOAT anytime soon, its still a nice opener and a nice treat on this tour. Like much of this time span, it starts kinda relaxed, low key, and on its on time, but once the cobwebs come off it’s decent. Other highlights include a Peggy O just for Jimmy, a spacey Birdsong into a decent Music Never. Perhaps a short but sweet first set and a good first night of multi night run show. Back with an upbeat China/Rider Jers rippin. Nice Ship of Fools followed by a 89 style Women Are, and a Terrapin that spaces out into the awesome weirdness zone, formerly know simply as drums/space, with more of the psychedelic majesty, even if it is electronically induced versus chemical!
But they come Rockin’ outta there with the 1-2 punch of Gimme Sum>>Watchtower, with JG keeping it real with a sweet Black Pete, with Bob bringing it home with rocking A&A/Good Lovin’, with an upbeat US Blues Encore to suggest more to come manana.
Nice run opener with any signs of 10/16 hangover gone like an afternoon hair o the dog! Nice show, definitely some kind of release worthy?

My 75th show picks up Rockin’ right where they left off the previous night, like a luge outta the gate, rattling around on the track, potentially out of control, through the first turns of Bucket, and a tad smoother into West LA, but eventually settle in and their here to play! After Bob? has to mess with shit, thearby taking the proverbial wind outta the sails, but eventually they come back with a good Victim, though it’s interesting to note this and Blow Away on this tour are more truncated versions. In the case of Blow Away that’s probably good as I think the extended rant versions could get stale if done all the time. Victim on the other hand would grow into a ridiculous auditory beast especially on the spring 90 tour and with the use of the surround speakers. Perhaps my personal fav is the one from Hamilton which unfortunately being a stereo recording does not let you experience the amazing weirdness we enjoyed on the floor that night!
Then, yes indeedy it does have a Cumberland! Followed by a spacey Cassidy>>Dough Knees.
But the biggest highlights of this show, and perhaps the run, come in the second set.
Only the Third Help-Slip-Franks since 9/12/85, and a fine showing they were. Next a status quo Estimated/Eyes, but I want to say I think I remember some nice midi weirdness in Estimated? Or maybe I’m mixing up my shows?
Onward through the weirdness zone, with gentle reintegration via The Wheel, which slides nicely into Mr Fantasy/Hey Jude Finale, only the second of two on the tour, which means wait for it....that’s right we’re getting a Death Don’t, the second of only two on the tour, and only the third since 4/26/70, and what a experience, get bumps just thinking bout it. Perhaps my fav of the three, but I need to line em up back to back...
Lovelight is a nice choice to finish/follow the big dog, and a always welcome Baby Blue encore, cept this time we might of been disappointed hoping for an Attics, but expecting at least a We Bid Thee Goodnight! Keep em wanting more eh!
This one definitely needs to come out in some form.

So by now everyone’s fully settled into the Rectum run, and speculation and expectations are running high. So far only the Death Don’t, as far as the Big ticket tour items, so what would it be tonight, and would we go home slightly disappointed with Hampton as the “ones” and missed opportunity in Philly?
Certainly not out the gate. Nice 1-2 Touch O-GSET, with the usual era M.O.: loose but spirited. Then a nice Candyman, the second of only two on the tour. Another of those loose canon Weir rockers, Picasso Moon, which still seams a work in progress, but rocking. A decent Little Light, probably my favorite Bret tune, perhaps a bit smoother than some of the previous? A spirited Jed, Memphis, Stagger Lee, and set closing Promised Land....or wait??, WTF? Que other big top tour item from this show, the first ever of only 2 California EarthQuakes!
Though unfortunately I don’t have many specific memories from these shows, I do have a Kodak moment in my thick skull of this. So JG doesn’t stop, the crowd goes from end of set roar to you could hear a pin drop as I don’t think anyone knew this old tune. So everyone was tuned into try and hear what it was etc. By the time it builds up to that first chorus, the place goes GD nutz! Since those horrible quakes had just happened out there, everyone was well aware of the dire situation, and in true, magnificent GD style, they fucking killed it! What a tribute, made me proud to be a Californian and I’ve only been there visiting like a month total over the years. I’m literally getting choked up remembering this top shelf, all time personnel GD moment, a small elite, but powerful league to be sure.
So now the energy in the building is bursting. Will we get the DS, the Attics, a Dew, at least a Bid Thee Goodnight to close the run?
The second of only two Hey Pocky Ways to start the second, into the only Scarlet Fire of the tour, and a good showing. followed by a Truckin’ that morphs into a wild Other One Jam, 89 weirdness style, which devolves even more into the primordial ooze of drums/space midi electronic psychedelic joy, eventually morphing into I will Take You Home, which would normally be a good change up and it’s usual spot, but with each passing song the dream is weakening...
And though we get solid Other One>Rat>Maggy, with a usually appropriate run closing Brokedown, second of only two on the tour, I have to admit, there was a small let down. LOL, makes me think of DHBrewers awesome DaP 36 post! Ah gee shucks, lol. We’re so spoiled! ; )
Never the less, a great time was had by all, and a super run of shows that I was so fortunate to be at. So yeah I’m biased, but I think these three should land somewhere, someday officially. And though I’ve dreamed of a fall 89 comprehensive tour box, probably something smaller, say 5-7 shows depending on how you slice it would be more appropriate? In that case, which of these shows would get the ax? Tough call, some help reduce repetitiveness over several shows, some have tour rarities, some historical moments. I’d think at least 2 should be included, with the third day being a future Dave’s? Perhaps just a Spectrum 3 show box? Meh, think it needs a bit more bling?
So so far my ruff draft fantasy box list would something look like this:

- 9/29/89 for obvious reasons, but depending on space?
(* 10/8&9/89: already out. 2 from Hampton)
-10-14-89 my choice of the 4 not released yet. Would be 2 from Jersey
- 10/15/89 Jersey runner up
