    Crowd noise unbearable and unnecessary

    Just listened to a few tracks on SiriusXM, Dave's usual preview special. This music is great and special as promised for the songs he presents however they went overboard with adding in fake crowd sounds since it came from a soundboard. Its overbearing, unnecessary, clearly unauthentic and nonstop. Its like listening to an old TV sitcom again once you've gotten used to no phony soundtrack. Please remove else I won't buy it. You've been warned. Thank you.

    I always enjoy reading critical assessments of the band on here from people who obviously know what they are talking about. People who all think the same way - uniformity in any field always turns me off. Indiscriminate positivity does, too. It just doesn't ring true for me. Its quite patronising to label others as "naysayers" or "haters" if they don't like something connected to The Dead.
    Recent posts by Doc and Dark Star have surely been well worth reading. Whether you agree with the sentiments expressed in them is beside the point.

    you summed up my feelings on it. What on earth would motivate me to listen to a Bird Song that sounds like a cover band doing Bird Song?

    Hendrix freak it sounds like it's ok to dump on it as long as there is a description of the dump, yes? Something subtantative I think you said? The Bird Song melody in the 80s and 90s ends on a completely different note. Someone mentioned this a while back. You go to the 70s and Jerry ends on a high note and Bobby ends on low note. Jerry is typically higher in the mix so that's what you hear out of the melody, and it works to much better musical affect than the whole band ending on the low note which sounds yuckers compared to the 70s where Bobby played the same phrase lower to fill out the sound and compliment the main melody Jerry was playing. Jerry still sings the end of those verses on a high note, so it's not even like they're doing it to compensate for aging voices which get lower over time. Everytime I listen to an 80s bird song it's like the melody ends on a discordant note.

    How's this for substance. Brent hasn't the foggiest idea how to fill musical space in about 50% of the songs he plays. He sounds great as a chord guy which is great for Hammond playing, but as soon as you put him in front of the Fisher Price, he's just playing notes all over the place, as if he can only hear Phil, Billy, and Mickey. No regard to what the guitar players are doing. When Brent is off the Hammond, timing is good, musical coherence and improv note playing is way off. Did I notice this at the shows? Not really. I always got as close to Jerry as I could and the PA mix the crowd hears at the show is always much better than what ended up released in the 80s. I could barely hear Brent at the shows. I would much rather have a Bruce Vince keyboard combo atmospheric and ethereal. But even the Hammond was overplayed by Brent. Go listen to Pigpen in the WMD Port Chester show from '71. Did Brent have more energy and flexibility on the Hammond than Pigpen? Absolutely. Was it necessary? I guess so since the guitars weren't filling in the sound as they once did. Was it a better version of the band? Not even close. Pigpen knew exactly when to play and exactly when to keep his hands off the damn keyboard. Can hardly fault Brent for that when it came to the Hammond because nobody else was really pulling their weight full time instrumentally by 1987. It came and went throughout most shows. But this is really the whole point why there are a lot of people who don't care for later era Dead.

    There's your substatitive Hendrix freak. I wasn't going to post anything at all but just tell me I don't have a right to and I would be happy to provide an earful every time. Have some couth. Your analogy was cringe worthy, as if you were the one exhibiting the show in the middle of the room. Stick to your grease calls and concert stories. Those are good posts.

    Note to Space Brother - I am very happy for you. Regardless of my taste in 80s Dead, I know how much you love this. It's been a long wait for you, enjoy this one, enjoy the last one, enjoy the Giants Stadium box, and enjoy the RFK mini box.

    Other shows from this Spring 1987 tour

    I used to have 3/31/87 via WMMR-FM broadcast> VHS-HiFi> cassette (and VHS-HiFi> CD-R) and 4/7/87 via WNEW-FM broadcast> VHS-HiFi> cassette (and VHS-HiFi> CD-R). These shows are not excellent but very good shows in my humble opinion and I had pre-show and post-show DJ chatter on both recordings and on the 4/7 recording had commercials for Ben & Jerry's and a "Club Dead" (on 2nd Ave. in NYC, if I recall correctly). But for the life of me, I cannot find any of the recordings - original VHS or cassette or CD-R clones. Over the years, I heard that the Hartford shows were much better than the 3/31 & 4/7 shows. Replacing good for better ones, I guess.

    Been a subscriber since day one and will continue to do so. We've always had to take the lesser with the greater, that's not a new phenomenon, here and in life itself...........

    Having a critical opinion is not being negative. Blind fandom is not a good thing. When somebody says, “Doc I can’t really dig 1971”, I get it (which I do, and accept), but my comeback isn’t “Man, stop being so negative”. Truth be told, as much as I love 1971 shows, not every one of THOSE is worthy of release……

    I’m not an armchair sniper. People here know who I am, what I am, where I am, what I do, and what I believe in. Paid my dues and saw my fair share of shows (including some that WERE clearly “bad”), but not an expert. Have never pretended to be, just another guy who loves the music. Ungracious? Certainly not, thankful for all the hard work TPTB put into all this. Selfish? I don’t know, ask the hundreds of people I’ve spread thousands of shows to. Before people throw stones, look in the mirror first. Do I poke fun at DL, you bet, but I don’t attack people who disagree with my opinions about shows.

    Some Grateful Dead shows are black and white, but yes most are varying shades of gray. Did I say those Hartford shows sucked? Absolutely not. On the other hand, I didn’t say---and never will---that they’re classic either. What I DID do was to question the selection itself. And from what folks have communicated to me in private, I’m not the only one who feels that way. But from what I’ve seen and heard, I’m one of the few who dares to question it in public.

    Which leads me to believe---and I may be wrong----that many folks here just don’t like contrary opinions about shows. Folks, not every Dead show was sweetness and light. Yes, I’m opinionated about the Dead and won’t apologize for that. And yes, I will continue to poke the bear when and where I see fit……………

    Not sure if this has already been mentioned but now that a 4-disc show is possible for this series for the first time, maybe that opens the door to shows like 5/26/73 and 6/10/73 being officially released? Would not complain one bit...

    Jerry back on the East Toast, did not attend and have never listened to Hartford 87, but all the shows that year where just high energy a lot of band and crowd symbiosis going on. For 87 the MSG run should be released as a box set, just saying. Sun going up and then the sun it going down, shine through my window and my friends they come around............

So my copy of DaP 36 is in limbo. For me like those in the US, these are shipped initially through UPS and the transfered to USPS for the final leg of the delivery. The UPS tracking lists mine as out for delivery on 10/30/2020. The USPS tracking states it is waiting on its arrival - shipping label created on 10/30/2020. Can't win for tryin'.

However as often, I like to go with the sci fi time travel theory explanation: I think my copy of DaP 36 is stuck in a time vortex in 1971. In this very vortex, my DaP 36 dislodged my AB 50th copy which has arrived 2 days early of its targeted date. I am spinning the 2/18/71show now. I am following that up with Duane Allman's last 2 shows 10/15/71 (which was delivered today too) and 10/17/71. So yeah, I think I will let the good year of 1971 keep me busy.

I am thinking that the secret to getting my DaP 36 may be somehow encoded in the "Beautiful Jam" segment of the 2/18/71 Dark Star.

I was wondering now that Dave's 36 mached Dick's full output at 36 whether they would issue a similar version of the booklet covering cross referenced of the output. I understand Dick's was over but this is the 10th year. It would be nice

About what I expected. I heard this on Sirius a few weeks back and was concerned about the crowd noise. It was a bit much during Midnight Hour, but overall not as bad as I feared. I’ll take the audience noise all day long over those horrid keyboards from DaP35. In the end it seems to me that Dave wanted to recreate his first concert experience as closely as possible. God Bless. He’s entitled and he did a fine job.

For all you LLR haters out there, I actually like this one.

I expected to shelve this one, but it will certainly get a few more listens.

As far as the muddy sound, every time I attended a show in Hartford, the first few songs always sounded terrible. Not sure why. Aiko in 86 was barely audible.

By the way, 12/10/69 was on Sirius today. Why the hell wasn’t that released?

Just curious if I'm the only one who's gotten a shipping notification but a failure to detect the actual package within the USPS system, I JUST got the Colored American Vinyl shipped to my local distribution center so hoping no funny business is going on with the Dave's Picks...otherwise keep it easy folks we're in for a bumpay ride =)

Pick 36. Thanks - four sets of the classic mainstream rock GD recorded in a live Matrix-mix by house engineer of the time, Dan Healy.

It is workin for me. Bass is deep, reverberated and vocals are present with clarity and detail, but not too dry... instruments audible and dynamic. Kick Drum kicks. Cymbals slash and shimmer and splash and crash. Big crowd sounds as nature intended. -- And I only just got to Black Peter so far!

The fact is to do the archivists job and present Rhino with approved product is a hard enough job. but we're all experts too. Watching the promos for the releases, one gets to expect, like any issue of The Amazing Spider-Man Comic - we'll be told only the next issue will ever possibly outmatch the one you have in your possession now...

Well here, all be told Dave has bared his teenage soul and shared the first and it is no hyperbole...Bird Song 12-26-1981 is still my favorite, but had I been an attendee, 3/26/87 might easily eclipse it in hindsight!

Just delivered by the postman. That is remarkably fast, especially in these strange times. As the tracking had said that it had arrived in the Netherlands yesterday morning, it was obviously not held up by customs. For other Europeans anxiously waiting to see what the customs will do, maybe it is reassuring to hear that the value stated on the customs declaration on the packet was $10. This explains why the Dutch customs were not interested and I had nothing to pay. Now all I have to do is listen to it. 😛

WOW! The mix of this release is absolutely OUTSTANDING. I consider this to be one of the best mixes of any of the DP Series (and all are done masterfully), but this one has just the right about of Audience to add an ambience not previously attained by any of the other releases. "Wish I Was A Headlight On A North Bound Train > Crowd Scream" gives me goosebumps...

Well done!!!

As usual, it simply means that we will be required to pay even more taxes. Low value imports from outside the EU were one of the few things that were not taxed. What is even worse is that while the amount of VAT is not a lot, maybe €4 or €5, the administration charge from the customs is around three times as much again. The total amount we are taxed is eye-watering and it seems it will only get worse.

Sorry to hear.. toss some tea in the harbor. That e'll teach em.

Glad you got yours before I got mine. That's twice this has happened. The times they are changing.

Favorite 2 Dead shows of all time, 3/1/69 & 5/2/70. Top 3 venues to see the Dead. Orpheum Theatre, Greek Theatre, Ventura County Fairgrounds. Favorite Dead song, Cumberland Blues, favorite version Europe 72.

One more thing on this great release. I love that they put Latvala on the license plate in the liner notes-- a throwback to the Dick's Picks series where they all had 'Latvala' edited into a sign, license plate or something on all the releases. Just gotta poke around. Got through all of the release last night and I stand by earlier comments-- really solid release.

Billy the Kid - I could go along with that-the best two shows being 3/1/69 and 5/2/70. 3/1 is my favourite show from that run, and I am hopeful it will come out on vinyl next year. Before logging on, coincidentally, I started listening to 5/2/70 again - fantastic from start to finish . With Cumberland, I always liked the one on 4/28/71-I think this is the one on the box Ladies and Gentlemen.

For those of you that have your DP36 sitting in limbo between UPS and USPS, my copy finally arrived today after it was suppose to arrive last Wednesday. It was stuck between UPS Mail Innovations and USPS since last Monday 10/26/20 and tracking did not update until this morning right before it arrived. I was getting worried. So, be patient. I guess this election and Covid-19 has slowed the postal service down considerably. Time to dig in!

Too much crowd mixed in. It's like listening to a really good audience tape at times. I look to the Dave's Picks series for a cleaner, soundboard type recording. And proximity to NYC meant a noisier crowd in general. Still great, but I hope it's not indicative of a trend...lol

Only 2 people in front of me when I got in line to vote.
Easy paper ballot, no hanging chad, just fill in the circle like standardized testing.

Made it through 3-26 last night.
Yes, lots of audience at the beginning of set 1, a little less at the beginning of set 2, but at one point during Miracle there was very little. Sounds like someone was adjusting the %AUD at times along with crowd enthusiasm.

Sound quality is good in terms of being able to hear instruments, and Phil has rattled the house at times.

I’m not shocked at the way it sounds because I had several pretty good sounding UM’s during tape trading days including Laguna Seca and Angel’s Camp 87, and I think 3-27-88 was also a UM.

Dave had some leeway this year since 2-18,21-71 were able to appease some of the less-than-enthusiastic subscribers regarding his choices in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Looking forward to seeing what Dave pulls out of the vault in 2021.
Bring on the Knock Your Socks Off Box.
And what about 2020 Black Friday RSD?

Now on 3-27 Rooster and there is very little crowd noise, all instruments can be heard.

Arrived today. Some days we get no mail, others, like one letter, and then days like today the wife's Lands End bag and a ton of mail, the new Guitar World with Angus on the cover... and this little number.

Well, a bit of a high number only 1,110 from the end but no matter.

This release sounds - and feels - very "alive" to me. I love, love the enhanced crowd ambience. Dead & Co. shows have a little more of this, as well... I don't find that it detracts from the overall listen, in fact it draws me in and makes me feel more present.

Live shows, even those with respectful audiences still carry that magic background noise, and that's a big part of attending concerts. Here's to hoping we get that back on a large scale sooner than later. I really want to see Dead & Co. a few more times.

on the ballot in many places. Here in MN it's somewhat decriminalized, and we have (very-restrictive) legalized medical marijuana. Public opinion and one party (the governor is from that party) favor legal recreational marijuana here, but one party consistently blocks it; MN currently has the nation's only divided legislature, in that our house is controlled by one party, and our senate by the other. So one party passes legalized marijuana in the house, with the governor's promise to sign that bill into law, and then the other party in the senate votes it down.

AB sounds good, as AB should.

2/18/71 is in process right now (on a small tunebox, not the car stereo), and sounds good, as 2/18/71 should.

I tried Spring 90 yesterday (3/14, 3/16), and it sounded flat to me. My opinion.

I also listened to 11/2/85 (quiet backgound music), and it sounded ok. Morning Dew... :)))

Came through the letter box this morning. I wasn't asked to pay any duty or extra costs either. This is the first time for a year or two, and it has improved my mood on receiving it. In the recent past, I had a sense of paying for Dave's cds twice with the additional postage costs-but having paid the subscription this time last year, this one feels almost free.

I am still not opening post for a few days after receiving it, but come Friday I will crack it open and give it a spin. I' should be getting American Beauty and 2/18/71 tomorrow, too, so its all system go. Or will be soon.

Boy this set has such great energy - China Rider is hot! I’m good with the matrix recording because I’m especially glad to feel like I’m back at a live concert, especially when I’m cranking this one up. There’s something different about this one - electric, toe tapping even more than usual. Nice work, stay safe out there!

After 8 days in limbo, not counting the 4 days before it was handed to UPS, UPS tracking now says they have transferred the package to the post office for delivery. USPS tracking says they haven’t received it! I’m sure it’s sitting in a tray somewhere waiting to be processed but I don’t see it reaching me in the UK anytime soon. Perhaps in another week?

This is great, better than I had expected. The ultramatrix thang mostly works. Here and there, mostly towards the start of proceedings the audience level is too high but it settles down to a reasonable level fairly quickly. Sometimes when the audience goes nuts, it is obvious why from the music, sometimes there must have been a visual stimulus because it seems to have nothing to do with the music at that moment. I guess you had to be there. The band's performances are great. There are few flubs and the energy is high. The versions of some songs are top notch. The mix of the instruments is pretty good. Everyone can be heard though some instruments are a bit low in the mix. All things considered this is a fine release and a big improvement over Dave's Picks 35 where the sound quality of the cassette recording was definitely low fidelity and sounded muddy to these ears.

The end of the Dew falls a little flat for me. Jerry usually would draw out that last syllable of 'I guess it doesn't matter anywaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy', but here he doesn't. Small thing, but noticeable. The '87 happy and present Jerry is a plus for me though.

P.S. I found all the taxis. :-)

In London in 1990, the crowd cheering seemed to bear no relation at all to what was being played on stage. It was very loud before they even came on stage, and carried on during both sets ebbing and flowing.. Maybe on occasion a few people started shouting and others picked up on it and then everyone was at it. It reminded me a bit of being at a football game. It was far louder up in the balcony, where I was on the third night, compared to in the stalls at the front, where I was on the first.

I have traditionally been a "give us more 1967-1974"-type Grateful Dead fan but I must add to the chorus of people praising Dave's 36 (and 35, for that matter). Listening to Dave's 36, the first show, then the second, inspired me to finally open Dave's 35 (4 20 84), which had been sitting on the shelf in brand new unopened condition for the past several months. And that too is superb ... thank you Dave.

I paid $40.00 for a grade D audience tape that I can listen to for free on archive.org!
The only thing missing from this steaming pile of SHIT is the super dosed freako in the audience screaming "Jerry" on EVERY track!
COMPLETE RIPOFF!

....anyone can listen to pretty much any show, any grade, on archive.org. For Free.

Nothing new here....except varying expectations and ongoing personal demands.

I had heard that Oregon decriminalized all illicit drugs Tuesday, but just now learned that in conjunction with that, they also legalized psychedelic mushrooms.

And in Arizona, until Tuesday, it apparently was a felony to possess marijuana; it no longer is.

Oregon Measure 109. Legalize Psilocybin
Permits licensed service providers to administer psilocybin-producing mushroom and fungi products to individuals 21 years of age or older.

Not sure what licensed service providers means.. the old and wise hippie shaman down the street or a licensed psychologist that would only prescribe under controlled / supervised conditions, etc.

In any case, I am jealous.
