The Bath Fest -- Holy Mother of Gawd!

Looked at that lineup ... and the audience shots of rain and mud. Bath had it all: tons of great bands, big scale, tons of mud and ... no doubt some misery amidst the joy.

Spells out the difference between a 15-16 year old wild kid who wanted to be "there" and my sense as a 60-something that I'd never engage in that sort of activity again. Not that there's the opportunity. Though it occurs to me that, "post-virus-world," whatever that will be, I might make a 20-band festival just to be out and about once again. On the other hand, naaahhhh!

But '68-'70, festivals really happened. My own experience was limited to a two-day Watkins Glen deep dive and that was enough. Still: the Bath Festival! Great stuff.

Bath Festival recordings

A quick perusal of the website I linked earlier reveals that all recordings that are known to exist are indeed audience recordings. I have not heard any of the recordings myself but I can imagine that they are less than perfect given the technology of the day and the prevailing conditions. They may have been restored, but there are limits to what is possible (think Grateful Dead 1980's shows recorded on cassette tapes). Simply put, a turd remains a turd and cannot be polished. 💩

Bath festival 70 CD set

Just be aware these will probably be audience recordings
I bought the 'Freddy Bannisters Festivals 69-79' boxset a few years ago which includes cds of all the 1974 Knebworth sets. These are all audience recordings of pretty variable quality.
Reading the blurb of the 1970 Bath box it says they are 'restored'
Perhaps if anyone knows more they could comment

GD Singles?

I had no problem adding these to my cart so I’m assuming just a tech glitch earlier. My disappointment is that they are ending the series. To your point Jim, I have collected them all and none of them are opened. I’ve secretly told myself that the only way I’ll ever open them will be if one day I get myself one of those old juke boxes that plays 7 inch records and have it all decked out and refurbished in full Grateful Dead regalia. But now, I guess my dreams are a dyin’. And again to Jim’s point about the listenability of these, they are mostly just a novelty. And the lack of heavy sales for these, especially as they mention there is still ala carte inventory on the shelf, probably spelled the end for the series.

Albion Dreaming

Simonrob-interesting websites on British Festivals. As I have said before, I missed out on the golden years. I went to a couple of the Deeply Vale Free Festivals in the North of England in 1976 and 1977 and Glastonbury in 1978-which was the smallest one held there. It was quite miserable, not helped by the fact that I got busted while wandering about. It looks very impoverished on the photos-a gaggle of long hairs huddled together in a field.
Of the bigger ones, I saw Pink Floyd and The Stones at Knebworth in 1975 and 1976 and Reading 1977. I always liked the idea of festivals more than the reality.
Phun City 1970 looks like a blast-and seems to have been filmed, although apparently only the MC5's set has surfaced as a recording. Not that I have ever come across it.
That book mentioned on one of the sites by Andy Roberts-"Albion Dreaming" is a good book on the culture of that time.

Spacebrother - The Bath Festival 1970

I was there and you are correct in your assertion that it was epic. Certainly there were more bands at Bath 1970 that I wanted to see than there were at Woodstock. People always rave about the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 but I reckon the line-up at Bath was better. I have seen the lowdown on the 3CD box set that you refer to and it looks pretty good. There were just so many wonderful moments - too many too list here - but, being in England the weather took a turn for the worse towards the end which was a shame. Naturally, we all got to participate in a Fish Cheer, courtesy of Country Joe McDonald. I got a second go at the Fish Cheer two years later at Bickershaw whilst waiting to see the Dead. Ah, nostalgia.

Horribly marketed.

I tried to get them.. got the first year or two.. then did not get the Ripple year for some reason, probably my fault, but I got two of the year before so thought the subscription covered my bases for all of them. My bad.

Then I realized I never gave a flying poop about the studio singles. You get discs you will likely never, ever listen to with some cool artwork and that's that. If they made it hard enough that I missed out to get essentially studio recordings released decades ago that I will honestly never.. ever.. play. Then screw them. I have no interest anymore.

Rant over.. at this point I don't see the big deal. My opinion, not to be confused with fact.

7" Singles Subscription

I'm wondering if there is just something wrong with the page/item; it doesn't mention "Sold Out". I have subscribed every year, even though I don't have a turntable. The numbers on the singles I've received are always so low that I assumed that not that many subscriptions were sold. And some of the singles were on sale for months. I would be bummed if I missed out on the final year because I waited eleven days to sign up.

Blurting out "Hell Fire!" to everything the wife sez -- there's the match that'll ignite the covid-dry tinder! But what a way to go! Living alone, I occasionally talk to myself, of course. Lately, after I make a comment, I blurt out "You don't say" in a bad faux British accent. Sometimes I accuse myself of being a "twat-head." Cracks me up. (Fearful of what's next!)

And here's to the poster whose wife pulled a bag of shrooms from the storage box. It's a sign! I had to stifle an impulse to rip apart the boxes in my basement... Not to worry, I know where the stash is, and as soon as this broken leg heals completely in about 5 more weeks, I'm strapping on the shrooms and the snowshoes and hitting Kenosha Pass for a little peace overlooking South Park (the real one).

I'm new here. Don't know where else to ask this question. I've emailed customer service several times,with no answer. I want to subscribe to Dave's picks 2021. It includes free domestic shipping. But when I go to purchase it a $11.99 shipping charge is added. Does anyone know how to resolve this, or how to get a reply from customer service?

The other date to note is January 8th. This is when the subscription window closes. The closing date was mentioned in the email from earlier in December when they announced DaP #38.

Anniversary shows 12/31/77. 80, 81 83, 84, 86

New Years Eve shows always had a different feel about them, they wern't always the best shows, but they were fun and interesting.

New Years 72

Billy - I think this was one of the few you didn't see-but I wonder if this stands out as a great show, New Tears (or Years I typed tears by accident) or not. I always enjoy it as much as any Fall 72 show. The other New Years shows do have a feeling of "you had to be there" a bit, just going off the recordings.

My cd copy of New Years 1972 also includes the sets by The Sons of Champlin-which I have never played, and the NRPS, which I played yesterday. I am not an expert on them by any means, but I liked this. Quite a long set for a support band-the second one at that-too. Must have been a great night out all in.

My First Show Anniversary

Today is my first show anniversary. I went to Winterland with my friend and his older brothers on 12/31/71 and had a great time. I got on the bus seriously after 2 shows at the Berkeley Community Theater in August 1972. After that, I attended every New Year's the band played: 72, 76,77,78,79,80,81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90, and the last GD New Year's performance, 1991. It became quite a tradition. As time went on, in the later 80's I shared these rituals with 20 good friends on the floor near the front. We snuck in champagne and I always had great anticipation for the NY countdown when the balloons would drop, the band would begin playing, I hugged my friends, kissed my girlfriend, and we all sipped champagne. Now on New Year's, I miss this great ritual.

To honor, commemorate, and celebrate that year, I will be offering any and all 1971 recordings to any and all that are interested. No limits. You can ask now, you can ask on the anniversary of any shows, or you can ask at any time up to and including midnight on December 31, 2021. After that, only the Shadow knows………….

Friends, I understand that 1971 is not everybody’s cup of Grateful Dead kool-aid. Perhaps you know little about it, maybe want to dabble, merely poke around, or heaven forbid go all in. Let Doc be your guide. Haven’t led anybody astray for decades……

12-31-81...

My only NYE show...last minute decision...flew early morning from LAX to Oakland...scored a miracle ticket thanks to the genorosity of a new met friend who bought two from a scalper and gifted me the second tix...I tried to pay him and he said no, enjoy...and I did...I had a ten foot square tarp in my bag o' tricks and used it to keep the drizzle and rain off of me while in line...it was gladly held up by folks on the edge while it was needed for a bit...never had a peyote brunch before but it seemed to work just fine...after the show waited for the BART to go back to the airport...the SF side was packed with all kinds of craziness going on...after awhile it was quiet and strange, finally the Airport BART arrived and I was at the airport after a quick walk from the BART station...People later told me I shoudn't have done that walk through a dicey part of town but I guess the road trip godz keep an eye out for fools...was backhome in LA by 10:00 AM or so...had the obligatory menudo my Sis had made and dozed off and on with Bowl games on TV...fuzzy day indeed...

Here's the thing: whatever fate bestowed upon that band -- Constanten gone, Mickey gone, Pig starting to get sick -- they played their music with gusto, no matter the band lineup.

Also, Nappyrags, if you get a chance, check out 12-26-81. Perhaps not much of a setlist on paper (though there IS a Candyman, Jer sings Big Boss Man and Phil leads an Eleven jam), but played with gusto. Marye said she attended. Like many heads "stuck" in the Rockies with no dough, I never did catch a hometown show, though I did get to a Phil & Friends show (my favorite lineup, the Quintet) at the Warfield at some point.

I too wish to be optimistic and the trend lines point toward a better year. But as the fly in the ointment, we've got a rough slog ahead for many moons. I'll weigh that weird measurement, "normalcy," when we're back rockin' together at live shows.

I was wondering if there are any quality 67'-69' live shows with video? I was thinking of an ark box with a video supplement similar to the giants box but obviously not as high quality but more like super-8. Any video from this time is better then nothing.
